That is from a player's point of view not a character's I have been a DM/GM as well as a player in games where time was an important factor. It isn't in every case but I find it easier to simply try and play my character's with their motivations in mind and decide actions from that stand point.
That's not always easy to gauge but in this case I think it is pretty straight forward. Ragnor would be worried about taking time to hunt and forage because the longer it takes the more likely something horrible may happen to the woman.
Without that motivation he wouldn't really care the number of days it took to catch up with the bandits as long as we where making our best effort.
However if we really where tracking a dangerous group on the run in this world a skilled tracker would likely use every trick they had to make up time. Using prepacked meals to eat on the move and minimize the need for a fire would likely be one of them. Just a little food for thought :)
