★ - OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT - ★

Pathfinders push back the extraplanar mercenaries, which flee the Society's ferocious counterattack. The few remaining elementals fight to the last but quickly crumble under the assault. With the path back to the surface clear, Sorrina Westyr leads the way up to the portals, while Drandle Dreng organizes a quick head count, and begins ushering groups of agents back to Golarion.

Sorrina Westyr is among the last to step back onto the Isle of Kortos, carrying a beautiful, fist-sized opal that seems to glow with countless colors. Overhead, the once-radiant Aucturn's Tear gradually fades in brightness until it's imperceptible against the night sky.

The Master of Spells holds the immense gem aloft and speaks to the gathered agents. “We have accomplished a marvel today. I hold here an artifact in which dwells a powerful air spirit called Ranginori. Many ages ago, the Elemental Planes existed in balance, forces of good and evil locked in equilibrium. The elemental lords we know of today united against their benign counterparts, and claimed sole dominion. Scholars have speculated on the fates of the defeated, but no longer!”

A few scattered cheers well up from some of the more elementally inclined Pathfinders. Sorrina smiles at them indulgently, and continues.

“It will take time to confirm the outsider trapped within this opal is who he claims to be.” She starts for a moment, as if in response to a comment only she can hear, then looks up to the gemstone apologetically and adds, “Professional caution and courtesy, you understand.” She then looks back to the Pathfinders and continues. “If that's true, though, we now hold the essence of the lost lord of air, Ranginori, Duke of Thunder!”

At this, a wind whips around Sorrina, and she laughs.

“If we can free this being, imagine the history he can share with the Society, the good that might be accomplished. I cannot even begin to speculate on the ramifications for the Elemental Planes…and as word of our accomplishment spreads, there will be many thinking these same thoughts, and not with charitable intent toward us. We must be very cautious in the coming months I fear, and not least in verifying the truth of what we hold.”

“Fortunately, thanks to your efforts this evening, we have crippled key allies and armies of the elemental lords who opposed us. It speaks volumes of what the Society has accomplished in the past decade that I can sincerely state you defied demigods and emerged triumphant! It has been my privilege to have been part of that effort.”

Then the Drandle Dreng totters forward, weaving and swaying as if still trying to adjust back to Golarian’s gravity. “We traveled to the stars, and showed those sanctimonious sycophants just what the Society can do!” Then he scratches his shaggy chin, muttering to himself. “Heh. Pathfinders in the Stars. Starry Pathfinders? Starfinders? Starfinder Society! Heh. That’s catchy... I’ll have to remember that.”

Imagine this is a movie trailer, from a first person perspective.
What-what happened to me? You hear a woman’s voice over as the scene fades from black, like she opened her eyes from a nasty hangover. ”Ugh, my head…”

An unearthly squeal gets her attention as a small imp-like creature flies past her. She points at it reflexively, only to notice her hand is gone. In its place is a red-skinned claw with razor sharp nails. All she can do is stare at it, wordlessly trying to understand. She begins to notice the stitches, the scars, the patchwork of scales and toughened skin across her body. She dares to look at a nearby mirror before twisting away from the horrified visage staring back. ”WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME?”

As she screams, a booming otherworldly voice overtakes her timid tone. Her body begins moving on its own. It jumps off of the table it was strapped to and begins to lumber towards a door, any door. You can hear her panicked breathing. She struggles against her own self and collapses, unable to move. She hears the door open. Unable to look up, she can only see someone’s bloody boot approach her vision. ”It seemed like you wanted to learn what I was up to, Pathfinder. Think of this as the first step in teaching you.” A male voice echoes through the room. “Ah, but your growth is not yet done. Stand up.” The woman’s body jerks upright and begins moving on its own. As her vision blurs, you hear another voice kill them all. Let their blood flow... The scene fades to black.

Random area of interest: 1d20 ⇒ 9
D. made an stroll, in late afternoon, through the streets of Absalom.

Perception, see any recruitable peasant?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Probably so.

It is a rough 40 ft away from a street vendor shop with a sign that says Madam Zia, Fortune Teller and potions., that D. holds still. A varisian woman in her twenties had just finished a reading, yet it appeared the customer was not pleased with what she told him.

"Bullcrap, woman! I would never do such a thing, and neither would she, you insult me!"

"Sir, the cards do not lie, nor do the spirits."

"I should have known better than to sit down here, and damned be your 'spirits' and playing cards! I want compensation for this insult!"

D. quietly disappears from sight, and sits down on a barrel, a mere 15 feet away, arms crossed, watching patiently for the right time.

The man flips the stand, causing the crystal ball to shatter, and the cards to fly in random directions, ending up in the filth or gutter.
"That's right, eh, where are your spirits now? I'll take this money box for compensation!"

Madam Zia raises her hand in protection, and then the table sets itself back upright, and the deck comes back onto it in a rapid pace.
Both of them are baffled, and speechless for a moment.
"The spirits? You must have angered them greatly, i have not seen them act like this."

It is not your benevolant spirits doing this. >:)

The man is nervous, and is about to hit her as a final action, when the table starts spinning, ever faster, and flings itself at the man like a 200 pound oaken frisbee. The man shows a short expression of nooo!!, before it crashes into him, leaving him motionless 15 feet farther away.

Madam Zia sits shaken and speechless.
"Without my stand i am...without work, what do i do now?"

"I will offer you a way.", a calm and raspy, yet clear bodyless voice replies. As she looks around to see where it is coming from, it continues.
"There is a Tian man nearby, looking for staff for his estate. At least you will have work, and it seems he is harsh towards those rude to his comrades and subordinates. Think about it, a roof over your head, meals and friends among the other staff in the future."

Mada Zia thinks about it, and comes to the conclusion it's the best option on immediate term. She gets up and starts searching, finding D. standing against a wall and looking into his notes.

"Excuse me sir, i..heard you are looking for staff for an estate? I would offer my services."... D. nods, and replies in his proper voice.

"I am. Hmm....very well. If you would follow me, we can walk there, and i will tell you of what is expected.", and he makes an inviting motion to walk past him. As she does, D. smiles, oh he does....before turning to escort her.

The envelope bears a seal depicting the Red Arm of Absalom. The handwriting is obviously hers. Her room at the inn is empty and cleaned as if it were vacant, even before the cleaning crew arrived. The innkeep says she checked out early.

Letter:

You have given me the gift of friendship. Joy. Belonging. Family. I have greatly enjoyed my time as part of the Red Arm of Absalom.

For now though, I must depart. Raginori has given me a brief insight, an opportunity I must take full advantage of: Meeting it.

The wind works in mysterious ways, but wherever I go I feel a breeze always pushing me from the same direction. Cold, relentless. I thought it was a ruthless manipulator, but... I believe it is lonely. Bitter. Lost. I was there, once.

It does not matter how long it takes me to get there. Isa and I know where to go and will converse with this force. Know that I will show the same warmth and kindness to it that you have shown me. Thank you, Red Arm of Absalom.

It has been weeks since the siege of Nerosyan, when demonic hordes from the Abyss surged forth from the region known as the Worldwound to assault the capital city of the crusader nation of Mendev. Brave Pathfinders stood side-by-side with the city’s defenders, managing to push back the attackers and ensure Nerosyan did not fall to the demons.

Venture-Captain Jorsal, the Society’s principle representative in Nerosyan, took charge of the Pathfinder defenders and since the siege has deployed numerous groups on missions throughout the region. Having left Nerosyan to survey the devastation of Kenabres, which fell to the demonic offensive— Jorsal ensured some of his agents remained behind in Nerosyan to guard the Starrise Spire, the local lodge. Earlier this morning a messenger arrived with a sealed letter from Jorsal, signaling that more work remains to be done.

Jorsal's letter:
Esteemed Pathfinders,
I trust this letter reaches you without incident. I remain in Kenabres, assessing the damage dealt by the demonic offensive that struck all along Mendev’s western border. Although the city is devastated, the fiends lost momentum and failed to maintain their advantage, and several particularly brave crusaders have rallied the scattered forces for a counterattack.

Since the siege of Nerosyan, I have mulled over a most troubling discovery. I received reports from Pathfinders involved in the siege implicating Thurl, Nerosyan’s other venture-captain, of knowing that the demons would attack and when. What little evidence I have goes so far as to suggest that Thurl assisted the demons in planning the assault against us.

Following the attack, I sent several Pathfinders to investigate Thurl’s lodge, and though the ground floor was bare of any further incriminating evidence, the lower level were inaccessible. Thurl left many magical wards to keep out intruders, and until we could investigate further and confirm whether or not my dwarven colleague had engaged in dire mischief, the Decemvirate has ordered that I not publicize my suspicions. I received word only an hour ago that those wards appear to have faded.

I have kept you at Starrise Spire not for mundane guard duty but because I can trust you to finish the investigation of Thurl’s lodge. Go there, enter its basement, and find what evidence you can that implicates Thurl in activities against the Society. Once you have explored his lodge thoroughly, report back to Starrise Spire and await my return.

The Pathfinder Society must know for certain whether Thurl has betrayed us and to what extent our trek to Jormurdun— to say nothing of the Mendevian Crusade— has been compromised. Our efforts shall mean nothing if sabotaged by a traitor, and the sooner we know, the less damage he can inflict.

Inheritor guide your hand,
- Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lauterbury

You make make Diplomacy or Knowledge(local) checks here to gather information about the Pathfinder Society's recent activities in Nerosyan and rumors about the city’s venture-captains.

If your PC completed Pathfinder Society Special: Siege of the Diamond City, you can read the DC 30 spoiler.

DC 15:
Jorsal of Lauterbury offcially oversees Pathfinder Society operations in the area, but there is a second venture-captain who operates his own lodge. This is a dwarf named Thurl who has a no-nonsense attitude and sports a dizzying array of tattoos, scars, and piercings.

DC 20:
Some agents suspect that Thurl has not been entirely honest when dealing with the Decemvirate. Agents who work for him tend to have short life expectancies due to the dangerous work of exploring the Worldwound at his behest.

DC 25:
Venture-Captain Thurl is perhaps the most dedicated scholar of demonic anatomy that the Society has, and several times in his career he has discovered a physiological or psychological weakness of the fiends that granted the crusaders a small advantage. A group of Pathfinders who finished a mission in Numeria was later assigned to review Thurl’s work and notebooks, but those agents have not been heard from for several months.

DC 30:
Some Pathfinders who took part in the recent siege of Nerosyan and searched for Thurl claim to have found evidence that directly incriminates the dwarf. They found letters that indicate a link between Thurl and a known demonologist and enemy of the Society, Tancred Desimire. Such a link would no doubt mean that Thurl has powerful demonic allies and is somehow important to Tancred’s future plans against the Society.

We'll wait for all the PCs to check in before we really get started.

Hopefully some or all of them show up, its been a while since I've been without most the group around." Gallix should keep me safe... well so long as we don't run into anything with poison or particularly scary..

You reach Thurl's lodge. A single door provides ingress to this building you notice a blacksmith and a local brewery flanking the lodge.

Four other Pathfinders have just finished loading the last of the library's books onto a cart. "Yuck, demons! I'm happy I didn't have to go to the Worldwound..." A human shakes her head.

"The Worldwound is pretty nasty. Thurl enjoyed dispatching agents out there. I've been there, not very fun without support..." The tiefling shakes her tail, subconsciously.

An elven woman turns to you as you approach. "We haven't been able to enter the basement, there's some kind of protective ward." She shakes her head, some leaves fall out of her hair. "But hey, it's fading now like a bad punchline. Maybe soon it will break."

The last Pathfinder, a female gnome clad in black walks up to the party, presenting a box. "Venture-Captain Jorsal told us to hand this to ya. You're exploring the basement, right? Take it."

Shiny Magic Goods, I assume Mr. Peppers analyzes them all in fine detail.:

- potion of cure moderate wounds
- a scroll of perceive cues
- an elixir of vision
- a vial of antitoxin
- a handful of dust of appearance

That was an awesome special to play. :)

D. arrived slightly late, but in time to overhear the chatter from his comrades, that had started.
What is that croaking voice?

It became clear, as he saw a familiar frog standing amidst the others.
Oh, nothing special.

Uesugi looks tired this day as he approaches the others. While the rest were on the mock guard duty it seems that Venture-Captain Jorsal made use of Uesugi and Yurei to assist in the scouting of the area for any other oni that might appear from Worldwound.

The land was bleak and Uesugi was happy to help out. The land felt devoid of life and likely would never change especially if the Worldwound remained open. He admired how the people who even in this destitute land were still doing their best to make something of what it had once been.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26

Approaching the others he bows. "Apologies for being late. Venture Captain Jorsal had me riding all night to pick up a delivery from Absalom." At that he unrolls a katana that does not have the same luster as his previous blade. The blade is dark and foreboding and you almost wonder if the bladed edge is sharp. Seeing you observe it Uesugi answers your unspoken question "The blade is fashioned from the very substance of the stars. Similar to the star we journeyed to yet this material was obtained from a star that fell from the heavens. It has taken over three years to get its shape to this. My master blacksmith had it enchanted but the blade is not fully completed yet. When we return to Absalom I will continue to have the blade protected in shujen blessings. Even now it will be of great use to us I feel."

"Venture Captain Jorsal has selected us carefully for this task. And with our numbers smaller we will need to be cautious of how this approached. While running messages for Venture Captain Jorsal I heard some things of note. This Venture-Captain Thurl is perhaps the most dedicated scholar of demonic anatomy that the Society has and has discovered weakness of the fiends that granted the crusaders a small advantage. Recently a group of Pathfinders were assigned to review Thurl’s work and notebooks, but those agents have not been heard from for several months."

There is little else of interest on the ground floor. The heavy iron door that leads into the basement is undecorated and unlocked, but the other agents report that until recently it practically glowed with Abyssal runes.

Mister Peppers uses his magical might to detect a lingering aura of abjuration magic.

So, are you guys going in?

"Let us proceed. Stand back I will see what I can do to open it." Drawing the dark somber blade Uesugi puts the edge by one of the hinges and begins to test the willingness of the door.

I'll cut through this door with my blade. Should I roll?

1-23 (Thread|Slides)

With a single stroke of his blade, Uesugi slices right through the door.

No rolls are needed. The door is unlocked now but hey.

A long set of dusty wooden stairs leads down into an equally untidy archive of tall shelves populated by crates, bins, and tomes. A handful of folios lay scattered about the room, concentrated most heavily near a large table that stands only about two feet tall.

The books here are mostly unfinished, written in a dozen different languages, mostly Common and Abyssal.

If you take 10 minutes to search and make a DC 20 Appraise, Knowledge (arcana or planes), Linguistics, or Perception check, or an appropriate Profession check, read the spoiler below.

Analyzing the texts:
The majority of the works detail the studies of demonic anatomy, surveys of the southeastern corner of the Worldwound, and Sakorian relics tainted by the Abyss. Thurl may have used unsavory business practices to get this information.

This side of the door has the same stone pattern of the wall and ceiling. If the door were closed, it would be very difficult to notice the hinges.

Perception DC 25:
On the east side you notice another door, closed and blended well with the wall.

Eventually you realize something is in the same room as you: A humanoid creature shambles out of the room. It looks like a patchwork of cream, red, and purple skin with asymmetrical horns and mismatched legs. She stares at you and then stands tall. "Who are you?"

Mr Peppers looks at the Gnome, then at the box, then back at the Gnome. Taking the box and opening it his expression quickly changes from neutral at best to smiling. He reaches his other hand into a pocket and pulls out a couple silver pieces and hands them to the Gnome "Thanks for the delivery!" He then waves his hands and his eyes go blue as he basks in the glory of the arcane auras.

As they head down to the basement he rattles off the contents to the others: "Some useful items here... a moderate level healing potion, this scroll with expand someone's ability to pick up clues, similar to this elixir here.. oh yes antitoxin, and a dust that makes the invisible.. visible again!" He quickly hands the antitoxin to Gallix with a chuckle.

Once they reach the previously locked and warded door he smiles as he detects the lingering aura which is quickly interrupted with the slice of metal through metal and wood. "Well then. I see you've gotten your adamantine katana finally!"

Again Mr Peppers' frown is turned upside down as they enter the study of someone with some intellect! "Woah now.. we're going to need to take some time in here... He follows the others down and pats Uesugi on the back approvingly as his blade cuts down the door like a scythe cuts down wheat. "I'm looking forward to seeing what that thing can do against something a bit more menacing that a door! Heheh!"

Like Tiffany, Gallix has little interest in the books scattered around the room. He might pick up an odd scrap and hand it to Peppers to look at more closely, but he wasn't in a studying mood. Not in this place anyway.

With that thought, the multi-toned humanoid appears in the room, and Gallix immediately takes a defensive stance. "Tiffany's right! We're the Red Arm of Absalom! For your sake, I hope you're not here to cause any trouble. Who are you?"

As Mister Peppers takes his time reading about demon anatomy, Princess Tiffany notices a hidden door on the side. Oh, and also this humanoid-demon hybrid thing.

"Ah, PATHFINDERS! IT'S ABOUT TIME!" The woman's voice booms briefly before returning to normal. "I am Valais Durant, Venture-Captain of this lodge. You are all loyal, yes? Then LISTEN UP!"

"The traitor Thurl built a hidden workplace past this room, and that’s where he performed his most vile experiments. If the Society is to understand just how FOOLISH he is, someone must uncover his terrible schemes. That’s where you come in, Pathfinders. There is a hidden door against that wall..." She waves a crimson claw toward the reading table. "I see your keen eyes have already picked up on it. You are the perfect agents for this task. Beyond that door, you shall find his lair. ANY QUESTIONS?"

You guys can choose to bring her along, subdue her or tell her to stay put.

"Excellent! I shall accompany you, then." She nods. "Venture-Captains should play a more active role, don't you agree? Go ahead, you first."

Valais stays in the back of the group, mostly out of your way. Once Mister Peppers finishes investigating, you slide the hidden door to the side and enter a large underground room.

This chamber stretches ahead and to either side as far as the eye can see. Wall segments stretch from floor to ceiling, as much resembling overgrown stalactites as architectural features, and chunks of shattered masonry and other rubble litter the otherwise even floor. Long since expired torches rest in sconces affixed intermittently to the walls.

You enter a large maze of tunnels and passages. With enough careful inspection, you notice faint chalkmarks etched on some of walls.

"I feel like I'm being watched, how about you?" Valais looks around, careful to not step on any debris on the floor.

Perception DC 36:

Stealth: 1d20 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 18 + 2 = 36
You spot a faint, transparent horn peeking out of a wall before it sinks back into the ground.

Near the center of the maze stands a raised altar made of ivory-inlaid wood, its virtually pristine condition a sharp contrast to the shattered walls around it. At the center of the altar rests a statue of two figures locked in combat: a brass bull and an iron dwarf that grips the animal by a horn from over its shoulder while holding a warhammer aloft. Delicately incised words encircle the statue’s base, reading, "In my name is the strength of my history, my tradition, and my people. Speak your name into my ear, and I shall judge your worth."

This altar sits at the center of the maze and depicts the dwarf in control of the bull.

DC 18 Knowledge (arcana):

The bull is actually a gorgon.

DC 15 Knowledge (religion):

The Dwarf is Torag, one of the dwarven gods.

Perception DC 20 or Sense Motive DC 20:

On closer inspection, you see the dwarf is actually off balance and that the bull is poised to strike.

If you carefully inspect the altar...

Perception DC 25:

You spot a faint shimmer of an inverted pentagram on the bull’s brow.

If you make the Perception check, make a single Knowledge(religion) check.

DC 15:

You recognize it as the unholy symbol of Asmodeus.

DC 20:

This is a symbol of Baphomet, the demon lord of beasts, labyrinths, and minotaurs.

Okay, who is interacting with the statue?
