Once the party recovers, they proceed to a small study.
Maps of varying sizes drawn on paper, papyrus, and parchment of dozens of styles cover the walls of this chamber. Most of these bear sketched annotations of some form or another, and bare, rectangular spaces in the cartographic wallpaper attest to maps that have been hastily removed. An enormous parchment map of the Worldwound dominates the east wall above a solidly built wooden desk covered in a haphazard array of books and papers. Scores of charcoal symbols and indicators dot this map, pointing out sites of interest that are named less often than not. A hand-sized statue of a fiend stands on top of the desk.
The books are written in an odd mix of Abyssal, Common and Dwarven.
Reading the notes reveals The Grimoire of the Beast, which contains detailed information of the worship of Baphomet.
Thurl has clearly studied this book carefully, especially the section noting secret handshakes and body language that followers use to signal their allegiance.
The notes regularly refer to Karsos, who Thurl sees as a mentor.
The last page has some kind of missive tucked into the back page.
Thurl,
I understand that you are slow to act on your knowledge of the Sky Citadel, but the Worldwound seems poised to act whether we are ready or not. What is more, the Society has just discovered what you have known for years, and if you do not act now, they shall snatch your prize away from us—
from you.
I have acquired a new contact— truly a powerful ally, as I’m sure you’ll agree. He will contact you soon to make an offer, and I encourage you to accept.
T.D.
"This feels...wrong." Valais shudders. "We should not be here."
Among Thurl’s papers and scattered throughout the desk’s drawers are 2 magical scrolls.
A scroll of cloudkill.
A scroll of break enchantment.

Mr Peppers takes a look around the caldron area with his pretty blue eyes and his journal out to take down notes. "Could you please heal the wounded Tiff while I study the area? We shouldn't move on until we're well healed of course. Feel free to use one of my wands if needed."
Detect Magic and take 10 on relevant skills around the caldrons and at the imp-like creatures.
Once they're ready Mr Peppers stows his journal once more and heads warily to the small room beyond. "Let me have a look first before you head inside please." "What's wrong, Valais? Was this Thurl's office or something? It sure looks like an office! Not that I'd know, I mean, an office of mine would resemble something much more grand. Chic, if you will," she says with a curtsy.

Valais stares at Tiffany. "You don't feel it? The malevolence?" She is unable to get more specific, and as she looks towards the entrance to the office she mumbles "Fools, bow to your superior!"
Small vermin have been following the party ever since they blew the gorgon statue off its hinges, feeding on the filth strewn about. But Thurl's office remains spotless. In fact you see insects and rats fleeing the room altogether.
While reading the scrolls and translating Thurl's notes, his knowledge of demonology goes beyond mere curiosity. Did he worship Baphomet? What did he keep secret from the Pathfinders? And who is this powerful ally?
2 more evidence points! That's 3 total so far.
As Mister Peppers finishes research, he takes a closer look at the statue. He has no idea what it is, but he does notice the carved mouth begins to move. Everyone hears it speak!
"Ah, Thurl, you’re back. I trust your little vacation to Jormurdun was pleasant and that my brethren did not demolish your laboratory in their conquest of Nerosyan. Now that I know where you are, I shall join you shortly. There are plans in motion that go far beyond our original compact, and I wish to make you a part of them."
The ground begins to shake. "He approaches." Is all Valais can mumble as the ground starts shaking. Something terrible is approaching...
You have plenty of time to turn and leave the laboratory. The incoming threat is beyond your capabilities to handle.
Mr. Peppers

Mr Peppers' eyes go wide with trepidation "Ummm I don't like the sound of that, maybe we need to go.. now!" He grabs a few of the more important and incriminating documents and prepares to bolt back towards where they came.

As you make your way out of the laboratory, you feel the ground rumble and shake. Several of the abyssal larva cases topple over and shatter upon the ground. Valais alternates between "We gotta get out of here! PRAISE HIM! Bow to you superior and beg for mercy! " as she runs upstairs. A cave in blocks off the northeastern passage. As you reach the stairs you hear a horrific, unnatural scream. "THURL! Where are you? We have much to discuss!" With the information you've collected you are not turning back, and you never get to see whom is calling Thurl's name.
As you emerge from the laboratory into the maze, you notice the walls extending into the horizon. A beast roars. As you travel through the maze, the source of the roars become clear:
A ghost of a minotaur emerges. "Hear me, enemies of the beast! I am Karsos, and you will pay for threatening my lord and master!"
The beast is hostile. Some of you have a chance to convince him to prioritize other teammates first.

Venture-Captain Jorsal looks out the window and clears his throat. "That confirms it; Thurl is a traitor, my hunch was correct. But I did not expect this level of corruption. How many years did he know about Sky Citadel Jormurdun? Must have been long before the Society did."
