Tilly Appledore |

It's Mother's Day today in Oz, and, I was out of town celebrating with my mum yesterday (plus two nieces had their bday parties), so today is for me. :) I'll try to post in my late evening as my Monday and Tuesday will be super busy at work.

Morwenn |

Sorry, real busy weekend...
Gratz ont the new job!

Berethor of Gondor |

I was also quite busy! Still around though. I will post an action.

Tilly Appledore |

Congrats on the new job, LM! And thanks for the heads-up. I'll make a post later tonight, my time. Busy at work at the moment.

Lothac |

Firstly, I’m going to be posting different versions of this in different games that I’m in, but I want to make sure that it’s known why I’ve been absent for roughly a week - from the whole forum, not just this thread. And it goes like this:
1.So, as I probably posted previously, my computer decided to go berserk and I needed to reformat it.
2. It then decided that a day or two later would be a great time to die altogether. Problematically, I have no other device capable of browsing the web.
3. Then my nieces chose to visit for a couple days, and I was spending time with them.
4. At the same time, my mom has been recovering from surgery, meaning I’m doing more driving than usual…
5. ...my car wound up needing some heavy repairs…
6. ...and work has frankly become pretty uncomfortable for me, so I’m actively searching for a new job.
With all that said and done, I’ve lost a lot of spare time and a LOT of money. I did replace my computer (and hoo boy is the new computer nice), but as such I’ve realized that I’m going to have to drop out of a few games.
I will be STAYING in this game if you will allow me, but I feel I needed to give an explanation for my absence anyway. I’m about to go to work, so expect a post after I finish.
I apologize for the inconvenience, and I sincerely hope there’s no bad blood caused by my absence.

Tilly Appledore |

Life has become extraordinarily busy, demanding and add in consistent poor health and it leaves one with little to no energy or time to invest in online gaming.
Please know I really wanted to play in this game and to develop Tilly. Unfortunately, at this stage in my life, I can't commit to any regular or consistent posting and I already feel guilty enough that I'm not posting as much as I should be. I don't want any of my games to feel like more chores on a long list of chores. That's not fair on anyone.
Therefore I am formally withdrawing from the game at this point to give you a chance to bring in a new player who can give you their all before too much action has happened.
I want to sincerely thank Tarondor for giving me an opportunity to play and for his help in creating Tilly. To the players, you all seem like a great bunch of people and perhaps one day, down the track, I may get the opportunity to play with you all, again.
Best of luck and kind regards,
Tilly.

GM Tarondor |

Lothac: As I've said in other forums, please take your time. Life is important, and this is only a game.
Tilly: As we've discussed offline, I'm very sorry to see you go. I hope that you and yours get better soon. You are always welcome back!
For what it's worth, folks, I am content with the smaller crowd and will not be replacing Tilly at this time.

Berethor of Gondor |

Sorry to see you leave, Tilly! That sounds fine to me, Tarondor; I think we've got a good group here that can maintain.

Primrose Bunce |

I am jealous. But I'll get less jealous when I go to GenCon in August.
Have a good time!
That's not one I'll get to attend. Seattle are conventions don't require travel. No way I'm going to convince the hubby I need to go play games in Indy for four days.

GM Tarondor |

Oooh!
I remember the name, but not the specific adventure. But Chris Perkins was particularly prolific in the early days. I've got the whole run of Dungeon bagged and boarded in boxes in storage.
Yeah, 1E (and prior) was a lot less about flexibility of design and a lot more about flexibility of reaction. We didn't have very many rules, so "table variation" -was- the rule. Then again I remember how exciting it was when "The Dragon" previewed several pages from the upcoming Dungeon Master's Guide (for what we didn't know then would be called 'Advanced Dungeons and Dragons'). I got my dad to make some photocopies so my whole group could use the charts (no such thing as home photocopiers back then!)
It was really the Wild West before then. Teenagers (like me) and adults played what is now considered OD&D (brown and white boxes), while "kids" (anyone two seconds younger than us) played the newfangled Red and Blue Boxes. Every trip to GenCon was an eye-opening experience in the different (and bizarre, in our eyes) ways other people played the same game.
Even then, the stereotypes weren't true. D&D players -could- be nervous unsocial basement-dwellers, but those weren't the rule. Don't believe what people tell you. My gaming friends ran the gamut from science nerds to football players and included girls (and later women) from early on. We were as likely to play the game outdoors or on the school bus as in a basement (okay -now- I play in the basement.)

Morwenn |

I'm quite jealous. I remember those nice big black and white Gen-con ads in Dragon mag, and wished I could go :) Never been...sigh.
Yeah, let's give them a bit of time to catch up...

GM Tarondor |

Well gang, I'm at a loss. ElegantlyWasted and CircadianRythms were both enthusiastic about the game, but we haven't heard anything from them for awhile. I certainly hope they are alright. It seems odd that they would both stop posting at the same time. Does anyone have any contact with them?
Did they go to Paizocon this weekend?
Anyone know anything?

Morwenn |

In the immortal works of Sergeant Schultz "I know nothing..."

Primrose Bunce |

Wasted hasn't posted in over almost two weeks in any game I'm in with him. The last thing I saw said was a post in a game he GM's that said he had finals and had gotten busy, asked us for updates on what we were still waiting on and then nothing. I do hope he's ok. I know he went silent on the boards a while back because of health issues.
Circardian I'm not sure. I'm in a game with him as well, Wasted GMs it. I haven't seen him post either, but we're waiting on Wasted.
As far as I know neither went to Paizocon.

GM Tarondor |

Any idea whether they're friends? I'd hate to think something happened to them together.
Well, folks, I'm not sure how to proceed. I don't want to let them go prematurely if they're just overwhelmed by life, but pretty soon here we're going to have to decide if we want to recruit new players or simply take it as a sign and give up.
My thought is to wait until Monday and then do one or the other.
What would be your preferences? Recruit or bail?

GM Tarondor |

Well, my main fear is for the safety of ElegantlyWasted and CircadianRythms. I find it strange that they would disappear on the same day within 8 minutes of each other. That seems unlikely unless they were together (or were the same person, I suppose). Sadly, there is nothing we can do to ascertain their safety.
They last posted two weeks ago today. I think we must now agree that they have left the game, for good or ill and decide how to proceed in their absence.
For that matter, it's been ten days since we heard from Raphaele Flickerlamp/Lothac. Let's have a roll call to see how many we are and how each player would like to proceed. I've heard from CariMac/Primrose. Could I also hear from Raphaele Flickerlamp/Lothac and Spazmodeus/Morwenn? Let me know if you're still here and whether you'd like to recruit and proceed or call it a day.
Thanks.

Morwenn |

Still here and willing to continue, let's see if there's anyone who want's to join our little Fellowship :)

Primrose Bunce |

:( That's too bad. I'm really excited for this.

GM Tarondor |

And thank you. I'm really excited about this, too! The PCs are great and I think I'd really like the story if I were a player: Not directly contradictory of the Tolkien canon, yet capable of letting the PCs be Big Damn Heroes without being part of the Quest for the Ring.

Yeah I'm liking that part a lot.

scranford |

I'll look through the rule book again, and come up with something. Maybe one of the dour dwarves that were seated in the inn... or perhaps a younger brother of one of the attackers bullied into joining the attack, but realizing the error of his ways.
Reading the game thread, the rules seem more complicated than I remember, but I'll give them a read and see.

GM Tarondor |

So as I noted in the Recruitment thread, everyone who expressed an interest is invited. Post here if you're going to play. Scranford, please let me know if you're going to join no later than Monday the 12th.
So our roster is:
* CariMac - Current Player - Character: Primrose Bunce, hobbit of the Shire
* Spazmodeus - Current Player - Character: Morwenn, Ranger of the North
* ignuspyre - planning on a Sindarin elf Warden
* Malinor - planning a Silvan elf
* thejeff - thinking about either a Rider of Rohan or a Sindarin elf Scholar
* The Pale King - Interested but undecided on what to play
* Arknight - Interested but undecided on what to play
* scranford - Deciding whether to join
Please begin to discuss your character concepts. Existing players, feel free to chime in.
The story will pick up after the battle of Combe is over.

GM Tarondor |

1. I've uploaded a document that may help folks understand character creation. It's HERE
2. The One Ring Character Creator is a great tool. The one thing it won't do is apply XP to advanced cultures (Rangers of the North and Elves of Rivendell) according to our house rules, so don't use it for that.
3. The one thing I'm a stickler for is character sheet formatting. I don't like the format that comes from the above character sheet creator. This is the exact format I'd like you to use, please.. Just copy and paste.
4. Although the only book you have to have is The One Ring rule book, I strongly recommend you also grab the Adventurer's Companion. It puts a lot of things players like all in one spot and includes new rules.

1. Sorry my copy-paste job stripped all your nice formatting. But my first observation -is- formatting. Please put your character in format mentioned above (first post and also in #3 immediately above).
2. I think this is a great character. Lots of flavor!
3. Be sure to amend from "Elf of Mirkwood" to "Sindarin elf of Lindon".
4. My only mechanical note is that you might consider dropping a point into Explore unless you're creating an elf who has never before left Lindon. Explore comes up a lot.
5. Be sure to spend those 4 XP (and don't confuse them with Advancement Points!)
6. He needs a name!
I'm not sure if this is dumb or not. I was possibly thinking one or both of his parents were killed by evil men, and so he has taken to wandering as a Warden, seeking to put the Shadow down where he can find it. It's not that he can't go home, it's just that he is out in the world to seek allies and to help him fight the Shadow. When I started making the character, I totally wasn't in the mindset of the setting enough to flesh the background out (cause I'm really tired). I'll try to think on this tomorrow.
Not dumb at all. I want your characters to have plenty of motivation. This makes your elf unusual, but not at all dumb. As few men come over the Ered Luin into Lindon, I'd guess that such a killing occurred when your parents were east of the mountains and in Eriador. Maybe your character is also trying to find out -why- they had come east?

Since there were several people looking at elves I changed over to a Woodman of the Wilderland. I am a traveling veterinarian seeking to one day earn a Hound of the Mirkwood. I intend to mainly be a melee character wielding a long handled axe and a shield, but I have a bow for hunting purposes.
I had almost everything set up in my profile for you to look over and then it seems to have timed out and I lost everything. I will put it back up again later.
How do I expend the 4 exp? I am still waiting on the books and used the character generator to build my guy.
