What kind of game (or what style of game) are youall most interested in playing? Mainly social, local cop kind of thing? Maybe hack'n'slash gang war kind of deal? Diplomacy and such as the Order grows? Let me know. :)

I like a mix of things... not pure combat, not combatless. Main thing for me is that I like heroic games. I strongly dislike games that feel like the DM is out to get the PCs, and I strongly dislike games where the characters have no agency.

The only game I've ever quit was with a GM who just didn't understand the concept of characters wanting to feel like* they have some influence on how the story goes. I don't expect that'll be a problem in this game, but you asked. :)

For your part, what kind of players do you enjoy most? Is there any behavior you either gladly anticipate, or dread?

* Note: this may not be the same thing as actually having it, but if it's not, it needs to be well-executed to feel that way.

Oladon wrote:

Ohhh, back questions!

I like description, character, and potential for growth. One line posts containing only bolded speech are bad. Three paragraphs concerning how your tongue feels in the morning and how that feeling has changed now that you've taken a bite of bread is tedious and boring. Describing in detail how that orc's head flew off his shoulders and how you're ready for more is good.

In short, I like to read good writing. 3d characters who don't necessarily get along with everybody, but who are mature enough to work with people they aren't besties with, inner dialogue, descriptive combat, etc, all make me happy.

Just so youall know. :)

I like being able to both roleplay and fight. With roleplay, you can sort of feel that something's kinda off with my characters. When they enter combat, you KNOW they're nuts. Korrith slamming down a beer, and then hurling it at an enemy (whereupon it explodes), or Victus neck lifting a goblin by burying his claws in its throat, because that's how he feeds.

I perfer games where the players are the heroes, not pawns where the local tavern owner is a retired mythic warrior.

I also think I am a little like you Choon when it comes to players.

I like to be challenged but not a TPK as they head to the market.

I have spent time developing Noro into a character. unfortunately I have never seen her in play past level 4 (actually that was because in that game she started at level 4).

I need to withdraw Corren from this, sadly. My schedule is shifting and the campaigns I'm currently in are going to occupy most of my time.

+1 to the previous opinions that a mix of combat, social encounters and diplomacy. I feel that the most fun part is when your characters achieve things and grows - no matter if this is thru an epic battle with the local thugs or by building an orphanage or something. (By growing I mean as persons but exp is fun aswell :) )

It is fun to be challenged and to be able to use creative thinking and tactics to overcome weaknesses and obstacles but it is also nice when the group gets a chance to do what they do best and really feel like heroes.

As for player interaction and writing - I like descriptive styles best where the players can elaborate their actions and describe their thinking. But I feel that it is important that we (the players) interact with eachothers characters and gives out hooks so other characters can interact with us.

Noted. Sorry to see you go.

Another summary of the applicants:

Devilfluff: Pelgev (Human Savage Barbarian)
Voyd211: Victus Kalrox (Dhampir ranger; possibly changing)
Lessah: Freia (teifling magus)
Oladon: Zayid (human Skirmisher/Urban ranger)
Joerice: Arithiien Elenren (elf ninja)
Bowen Fitzcairn: Eben Tarn (Human fighter)
Noro Kasuri: Human Brutal pulgist/drunk barbarian

There are a bunch of dots and incomplete proposals floating around still. These are the ones that are close enough to completion to be selected. If I missed anyone, please point yourself or them out. Especially any full casters. Though I think it would be fun to play without a full caster. :)

Soon, maybe today, I will be starting a pre-campaign RP session. This will let youall get into your characters, feel out your literary fluff, and allow me to feel out character styles and possible relationships. Yeah, thinking of switching to Korrith. Just a bit of variety among these PCs.

Manzcar here and here is Johnny let me know if you have any questions or need anything.

thanks for the consideration

--------------------
Port Ice, on the southern bank of the Lake of Mists and Veils in northern Brevoy, is a refuge for ruffians and lake pirates. A place known for harsh winters and hard people. Johnny was born here in the slums near the docks where it seemed no one ever escaped. His father, George, was a broad shouldered strong fellow who sometimes worked at the docks. That is when someone was desperate enough to need the help because Geroge's temper was well known and always got him into trouble. When George wasn't working and fighting he was drinking and fighting that was the extent of what he knew, George was abusive both physically and mentally and Johnny bared the scars to prove it so. As a young boy he took to spending more time on the streets and less time at home to escape his father's wrath. It finally became a full time occupation for the young lad.

Living on the streets meant that Johnny became very adept at burglary, pick pocketing, and defending himself with anything he could find at hand. Johnny grew to become a small time criminal, but his fame was growing as well. He became known not only for his skill at stealing but being able to dodge the guard who came for him.

His life on the streets stole his childhood, but he never noticed it was gone. Johnny had a great sense of compassion for the other children that had no where else to live but the cold streets. He constantly bought food and clothing for the other children, or stole it if necessary. He became convinced that he would live and die in the slums of Port Ice, but he hoped to get others out even if he couldn't.

Johnny met several people that supposedly wanted to help the street kids but they always seemed to be doing it for reasons Johnny didn't trust. There was one exception. A cleric that traveled to Port Ice from time to time named Garren. When he was in Port Ice he spent his time helping out the unfortunate street rats like Johnny, without wanting anything in return. When Garren was there he would help the street urchins like Johnny. He always talked about changing your lot in life, getting your compass to point north. Johnny always wanted to believe he could change but there were too many kids counting on him getting food and shelter for them. He knew if he wasn't there they would not have a chance.

Garren was always talking about leaving Port Ice and starting new somewhere else. He was famous with the kids for doing just that. He would get kids jobs working on a ship, ferry, guide, or farm hand. He always talked about taking control of your life like a ranger named Garion. According to Garren Garion was an orphen who now traveled helping people and guiding them from one place to another. It all seemed wonderful to Johnny but he knew it would never be something he could do.

Garren would tell Johnny he knew a lot of people that could help him out and he even introduced him to one once. Garren introduced Johnny to his friend Salereon. Some noble from some family, Johnny could care less. Johnny secretly admired him, the guy didn’t really do anything wrong and he had money. He was all about protecting the people of Port Ice but he sometimes got in the way of some of the “jobs” that Johnny did to survive. It wasn't Salereon's fault of course, the man had no idea what Johnny had to do just to survive and help others to survive. At one point, Salereon almost caught Johnny dead-to-rights on a robbery job where some not so innocent people got hurt… but Johnny was wearing a mask and slipped out just as Salereon came on the scene. Johnny felt bad about that dodging Salereon, because all he wanted to do was try to protect the people of his community. But Johnny had to make money, and he had to make it fast. So he always avoided Salereon whenever Garren came to town. He could never let him know that sometimes when he was protecting Port Ice, he was protecting them from Johnny and aiding those that wanted to hurt those Johnny was protecting.

Though Johnny would resist it every time Garren never stopped pursuing Johnny. It was like a mission that Garren wouldn't let go. Garren was always telling Johnny that he could change himself. Make himself better. Johnny wanted to believe it but he believed that his lot was cast and nothing was going to change that. Or was it. On Garren's last visit he told Johnny of his new adventure that he had planned. It was a diplomatic mission to the south and Garren wouldn't be coming back for a long time. It all sounded very exciting to Johnny. It could be a fresh start it could be a change for the better.

Johnny was getting a name for himself as a great burglar and sneak thief. Getting a name for yourself in normal circles would be a good thing but not in the underworld of crime. You either work for a boss or you are a boss and Johnny was no boss. Then it finally happened he got noticed once too often and was told in no uncertain terms that either he started paying his fair dues for his burglary or he would be stopped permanently.

Johnny did not see why he should pay someone else for his work and had not desire to be stopped permanently. So he decided it was time to leave Port Ice.

And he knew just the way to do it.

Garren had told him just a few days ago about his diplomatic mission just before Johnny found out about the crime bosses demands. Johnny had two choices leave or stay and be a slave to the bosses. Johnny didn't want to be a slave to no man. Johnny decided that change was better and easier on his life. Johnny had saved some money from his days of doing business and bought everything he thought he would need and headed out to catchup with Gerran.

Not too long after catching up to Gerran he finally got to meet the ranger Gerran was always talking about Garion. Gerran never told Johnny the ranger was an elf but I guess that didn't really matter. Johnny was very interested in seeing the rangers skills that he had heard so much about and was hoping that he could be accepted on this new chapter in his life.

Gerran never asked why Johnny had all of a suddened changed his mind to venture out of Port Ice, but Johnny believed Gerran already knew. Gerran never gave a set of rules to abide by, but Johnny didn't want to disappoint him either. Johnny was trying to self himself on the right course after all this time, and it was funny to Johnny. Garren was always telling Johnny that he needed to work to change his ways by finding his true north on his personal compass. What made Johnny laugh so hard was to find his north he had to go south.

But the cleric's mission was not something that Johnny could actually grab onto and he left the group after a few months and ventured back to large cities. He continued to move from city to city doing what he had grown to know, burglary. That was until he was caught and imprisoned, but it wasn't just any prison it run by the Order of Tears. He was told that if he did well and worked on being a better person the Order could find a place for him once his sentence was over.

He did just that and studied while he was away learning many things like other languages. He took all this and made himself better and is now a part of the Order waiting to do what he can to help.

Johnny is a people person even though he had to live for himself and keep other people's eyes off of him being a small time crook. He hates abuse of any kind and will go out of his way to stop it. In fact he spent most of the money he... well procured, on others to help them out. He wants a new life for himself where he can live without fear. And one day he would like to have a family and raise a son and treat him like he was never treated.

I'm going to have to back out. My build for the gnome isn't coming along well, and I feel way behind on this one. I hope you guys have a good time, and happy gaming.

Let me be very clear on this point:
I will not be closing recruitment in favor of this RP event. You may still submit characters and participate in the RP up to the deadline.
Any new submissions are very welcome.

I loooooove good rp ...interparty interactions like a group of real people ...some folks get along better than others, and that's part of the challenge. I enjoy a good fight, especially when there is some narrative or emotional drive. Random encounters can get boring. Post wise, I like good voice and style and that difficult balance of volume ...enough so it's not trading one-liners, but not so much that someone's prose annoys with excess.

A question: how do people feel about ...how to put this ...naturalistic adult language. While a cussing paladin makes no sense, my natural inclination is that a boozy sneak might not talk like said paladin. I know there are autocensors here and it doesn't bug me. However, I don't want to offend anyone.

I don't mind it, however, I don't cuss myself, so I might add in a few )/&;?/ if it fits the NPC, but I won't be doing it regularly

I believe Ariana's as complete as she'll get. She's also a full caster!

To your earlier question: I prefer a game that has about a 50/50 split for negotiation/problem-solving and combat. The current PbP I'm in has gone several months with only a single, one round combat (ambush/assassination against one target) and has been a blast.

The Order of Tears pre-selection RP Thread is up. Sorry it took me until (technically) the next day.

Heading home from live gaming, but will check in there soon.

Edit: Read the first post... DM, by "complete" do you mean no more tweaks afterward, or just application in a "ready for selection" state?

Liberty's Edge

I'm considering applying. I like what I've seen thus far.

How long do you anticipate having the app process going?

All recruitment threads for this event are scheduled to close on the 8th with the game beginning the 10th.

"Ready for selection". There will be two days after selection where I will allow tweaks before gameplay starts.

Liberty's Edge

The character I'm considering applying with is also likely to end up being a martial type. How closely do you adhere to traditional party compositions? Will a 'balanced party' figure in your selections?

Acknowledged.

Because this is homebrew I'm pretty much ignoring the traditional "balanced" party. My selection will hinge on the character and the story potential he possesses.

Howdy Feral. Just can't stay away from a promising-looking recruitment, eh? ;)

Liberty's Edge

Wait, that Oladon guy is applying?

If he's in, I'm out!

DM:
I jest. =P

Liberty's Edge

Below is my app. He's a beefy and rugged ulfen/coldborn brawler based largely on a PFS character of the same name. I'd like to work him towards being a Pit Fighter (the prestige class). Even if Performance Combat isn't going to be a part of the campaign, the class feature to turn any encounter with bystanders into a performance is so cool that I had to give it a shot.

Background:
The son of Hagrid the Furious and grandson of Olaf Bear-skinned, Ursus was born with a lesser form of lycanthropy common among the hardy northern peoples. Even though his clan accepted the boy for what he was, Ursus couldn't shake the feeling that he was an outsider and left for the warmer southern climes as soon as he was old and strong enough to survive the trip.

Despite the environment being less hostile the further he got from the land of the Linnorm Kings, life didn't become any easier. What meager coin and supplies the young man had brought with him dwindled and before long he found himself desperate for work. Quickly finding that the soft southern folks appreciated his sturdy northern physique, he began to pick up work as a bodyguard - usually protecting rich merchants along their treks between outposts and towns.

This travel brought him deep into Varisia and eventually into its heart - Magnimar. The massive cosmopolitan city was a wonder to the young man, a place of roaring busyness and teeming with the stink of humanity. Ever the wide-eyed tourist, the burly young man wandered through the city of Monument's streets rapidly discovering that a man could have anything he wanted in such a place. Unfortunately, this trek eventually led him into a drug den where his life was changed forever.

Ursus quickly found himself addicted and with no money to afford his new habit, he took work doing whatever was asked of him. With his powerful physique and fearsome presence, the den's owners introduced the young ulfen to the owners of the Two-Necked Swan - a seedy bar/brothel that hosted one of Magnimar's more popular fighting pits.

As was expected, Ursus was successful, squashing his opponents for the night. He was more than successful - he was a natural. The Swan's patron's loved the young ulfen's performance so much they begged him to return. Seeing that they had a winner on their hands, the Swan's owners worked out a deal with Ursus. He fight for them, on call, and he'd live like a king. The bleary-eyed northman happily agreed and for a while he did...

In the months to come, Ursus did as he was asked. His owners kept him off of the harder drugs (he needed to stay fit) but otherwise gave him whatever he wanted - spirits, women, and more. The young ulfen spent his days training, indulging, and performing in the Swan's pit and not just fighting - winning. Soon his abandoned homeland and his animalistic secret were all but forgotten.

This ended when another pit brought their champion over for a bout to determine which fighter was the strongest. The fight was close at first but Ursus was clearly the superior combatant. Despite this edge, the young ulfen's opponent would not stay down. The rival pit's champion was high on a drug that enraged him and made him impervious to pain and Ursus soon found him fighting for his life. With no other choice, the young ulfen assumed his ursine form and killed the man, snapping his neck with a thundering crack.

Money changed hands and the swan's patrons left with word of Ursus's performance on their lips. To most, business appeared to carry on as usual, but the Swan's owners were suddenly faced with a problem. There'd been deaths in the pit before but the rival pit's champion was loved - a minor celebrity just as Ursus was. His death wouldn't go unnoticed and that meant the law would be involved, attention they weren't prepared to deal with.

Sure enough guards came under orders from one of Magnimar's justices and Ursus was surrendered without a second thought.

I'll add a bit more once I know more about the campaign's intro.

Appearance:
Ursus is a great bear of a man, standing over two meters tall and half as broad. He is gifted with the hulking musculature that makes his people sought out as bodyguards - his massive limbs and chest thick with corded muscle. A thin iron filigree headband keeps his wild burnished golden mane out of his eyes while still allowing it to frame his rugged features.

His typical dress for the pits was minimal. He often fought bare-chested and wore little more than a few furs draped down his shoulders and across his hips. A fine chain ending in a black iron amulet emblazoned with a fist dangles midway down his bulging pectorals.

Persona:
Although a few years older now and possessing the filled out physique of a ulfen man, Ursus is still foolishly young at heart. He's lazy, a bit of a hedonist, and proud. A good night for him include a good drink, a good fight, and a good f$&~.

He's convinced anything can be accomplished through strength and will - a belief that's been challenged by his recent predicament. Ultimately, after he gets over the hedonism thing, what he really wants is what brought him to Magnimar originally - a place to belong. As the story progresses and he bonds with the party, he'll start to see that there's more to life satisfying himself and look toward building a legacy to truly be proud of.

Two things:
1) Can you point me to where I can find your race? It looks like human, but I've never seen that particular race.

2) What more do you need to know about the campaign?

Liberty's Edge

It's from here.

*What kind of time frame would there have been between being arrested and being given the offer to serve the Order? How long he's been in prison would be a factor on his outlook on things.

*What exactly are the terms of the offer? The summary in the first post is a bit vague (maybe intentionally). Do Tears typically serve for months, years, decades, etc?

*How committed to the Order do you expect characters to be? I glanced at the other Loom of Fate recruitment threads and they seem to have similar themes. I could see Ursus getting behind his role as a Tear but he'd certainly never want to be a Sorrow.

Feral wrote:

Time in prison varies. Some never see true prison and are sent directly to the Tears. It's not uncommon to see a few weeks of jail as your case is decided and tried, etc.

Of note for all:I've seen many mentions of people being given an offer to join the Tears when already incarcerated. I'm ok with this as the Order is new to Magnimar, but it is a rare occurance once the Orders are established. 99% of people entering the Order of Tears from he judicial system are sentenced there by the courts.

Quote:

I did leave it a bit vague intentionally. The tears aren't just about time served. They also care about he rehabilitation of the offender as that's their selling point to the Magnimar government. Petty one-time offenders who are truly contrite might stay a week. On the other hand, hardened, unrepentant criminals who have comitted serious offences may spend years with the Tears. The vast majority of people remanded to the care of the Order are in the first category.

If your character doesn't want to go all in, I would be open to the in-game development of a class of permanent Tear. This would be an entirely new development for the Orders, but I'm not against youall influencing the Orders as the Orders try to influence you.

A prestige class for the Sorrows, maybe?

If we wanted to go that far into homebrew, I'd make it a Prestige class, yes. That's a little far out and theoretical to think about now, however.

Liberty's Edge

Understood. Is Ursus cleared to join the pre-selection RP?

I just got a chance to really look at your sheet. You need one drawback (from Ultimate Campaign) to have 3 traits. You may either drop one trait or add a drawback to maintain your 3.

So where's the pre-selection rp ...I'm having a case of the dumbs.

Linky

Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

Ursus is Proud. I forgot to include it on the sheet.

Cool. You're good to go then.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks. =)

I already jumped on the pre-recruitment RP.

Could those of you who have aliases for your character please include your backstory in the alias for ease of reference?

Sovereign Court

I actually use that alias for PFS on occasion so I spoiler blocked everything and moved it down the page.

Thanks. As long as it's on here for reference I'm happy.

Sovereign Court

I'm considering making Ursus a normal ulfen (human). It won't affect his backstory much. He'll still have a bit of lycanthropy in his blood which I'll represent in some less mechanical way.

I'm fine with you keeping him as-is, just so you know.

Sovereign Court

I figured. =P

Being a human just works so much better for him. I'm a bit disillusioned with the skinwalker race. It doesn't really work for what I'm going for.

Whatever floats your boat (and is legal).

I'm also looking for a mix. My IRL RPG group has a lean towards the combat side, so a little more social interaction would be welcome. But no action can get tedious...

Liberty's Edge

My app was a bit later so I missed that question.

I prefer a good mix of combat and social interaction. I’m not a big fan of dungeon crawls - doubly so in PBP.

I’d also like opportunities to explore Magnimar and do stuff solo or in smaller groups assuming that’s possible. The City of Monuments is a big place. It seems a shame to zerg every experience as a full sized group.

A point has come up in the GM discussion that I though I should share.
Another GM has allowed the Psionics system from Dreamscarred Press. I assumed it was off the table, but it has been agreed that it is that GM's call and that youall should at least have a heads up. This means that you may face Psionic characters in crossover events.

It seems like most of you are satisfied with your characters, but if this changes anything for you, feel free to let me know.

That should be... interesting. I guess we'll see if they're as OP as everyone seems to think they are. :)
