Victus comes pre-masked for your convenience! And his. Easier to bite goblins with his mask.

There is some kind of chain of command related to slight variations in the Sorrow's mask design, but what that is exactly is unknown.

Interesting...

I really dig this idea. Scary identical masks! Our foes won't know who can do what!

Do they make special masks for other races, though?

Because a) I'm considering having Victus drain blood through his hands, a la Dio Brando, and b) he's deformed and there are also kobolds, catfolk, ratfolk and other critter-type people to worry about. Bog-standard masks won't exactly work for those.

Hmm, SGA Wraiths in Magnimar? Sounds... unexpected. :P

Who said anything about standard/mundane masks?

Hmm, that brings up an interesting point. It's been heavily, heavily implied that the masks/hoods are magical (and thus it's likely they resize for their wearer), but can they be removed?

What happens if a Tear decides they don't want to be a Tear anymore - i.e. tries to "escape"? (As a side-note, I'm asking out of story interest, not because there's any way I see Zayid doing something like that. I'm just honestly intrigued, and want to know more.)

If they are magical, could they adapt to be like Victus's normal mask? One eye visible, opening mouth so as to scare the crap out of goblins?

That seems unlikely if the point is to make us all look alike. :P

No rumors about this have been substantiated. But people will talk. :)

Hehe. Fair enough. :)

Good question, indeed.

However, all Tears wear a black hood and silver mask in public to disguise their identity. In private, these masks are removed and tears may socialize among themselves during evening hours. These masks are handed out daily, and no effort to procure one has been successful so far. Wild and varied rumors abound as to why it has been so hard from illusion magic to divine intervention.

Corren will rarely be seen without her mask or some sort of covering over the lower half of her face, so this is excellent news while she tries to figure out if what she did was really wrong or not.

A summary of the applicants so far:

MightyDuck: Correnari (Half-elf Ranger)
Devilfluff: Pelgev (Human Savage Barbarian)
Voyd211: Victus Kalrox (Dhampir ranger)
Lessah: Freia (teifling magus)
Oladon: Zayid (human Skirmisher/Urban ranger)
Haladir: Lynna Windstrike (human Sorceroress)
Joerice: Arithiien Elenren (elf ninja)
Bowen Fitzcairn: Eben Tarn (Human fighter)

There are a bunch of dots and incomplete proposals floating around. These are the ones that are close enough to completion to be selected. If I missed anyone, please point yourself or them out.

We seem to be leaning towards martial entries. :)

Which is why i have been hesitant on my entry

Yes, and no. Tears have been known to wear a wide variety of attire, but the attire worn at any one time seems to be dictated by their supervising Sorrow and dependent on the type of penance being administered. For instance, convicted vandalizers may wear next to nothing as they scour a temple clean, but just across the street a group of rapists in full, black robes serve at a local orphanage.

The Order's 'base' or facility or whatever is on the site of an old warehouse in Dockway between the Old Fang Tavern and the monument called the 'Eyes of the Hawk'. It is in the process of being renovated, and the Order of Forgotten Sorrows is hiring a lot of outside, local help for the project. It is also importing large quantities of stone from Devil's Perch, lumber from Korvosa, and magical talent from Cheliax proper.

Thanks for the clarification! I had assumed that rank-and-file members did not conceal their appearance. I had conceived this character as regularly using her appearance as an asseet to get what she wants... it will be an interesting roleplaying challenge running this character wearing a facemask that conceals her (in her own opinion) stunning beauty!

Also, just for the sake of transparency, I wanted to let you know that I have submitted the same character with a slightly tweaked background for the Aspis Consortium faction as well. (The difference being that she got caught in one version, and didn't in the other.)

Thanks for letting me know. I'll get in contact with that GM so you're not double-picked (if at all, naturally)

Nothing inherently wrong with that, in my opinion... we could even make it into an interesting statement about the type of (social) classes that typically commit crimes. ;)

(Like most such statements, it'd probably be only minimally reflective of the true state of things... but also like most such statements, no one would care how true it actually was!)

There's always multiclassing.

Just an observation.

But, it could certainly lead to some interesting role-playing opportunities.

I almost apped Corren as a Spellslinger. The class had me -really- interested in it but ranger worked better for her backstory. I have the 'slinger template saved for later use, though.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Let it be known: I will choose the lucky participants based almost completely on backstory and character personality. This is homebrew, so I can always balance around a "missing" role.

This makes me very happy to hear. :)

The most fascinating thing is the lack of rogues - perhaps they wouldn't search for redemption ?

Nah, they're just good enough to not get caught.

Yeah - that's probably it

I have a rogue in a live game who accidentally killed a mostly-innocent goblin... and she went and sought redemption.

Then again, an anecdote does not scientific evidence make!

I'd like to apply with an elven wizard. I haven't completely finished her (need traits/flaw) but her fluff and basic crunch is done.

Her crunch is in the character profile.

==Background==
Concept: An elf with an adopted human last name. While not raised by humans, she joined the Rosencruz family as an adopted sister when she was in her early 50's. They taught her the family trade--monster hunting. However, on her first mission, something went horribly wrong and she was arrested and eventually charged with burglary, arson and kidnapping.

Intro:

People don't seem to understand the threats that live around them, not always. Children cry for their parents in the darkness, claiming to have seen things where there is nothing. But sometimes...sometimes there are things there. Dark, crawling things that make their lives in the shadows. Lycanthropes that will bite your child in his sleep and turn him into a ravening monstrosity. Necromancers who will raise your grandparents to stalk your nightmares. And, of course, those are simply the things to which the common-folk have named.

I was taught to hunt these things and planned to dedicate my life to it..until everything went wrong.

Intro 2:

I had spent forty years with the Rosencruz family. They taught me everything they knew about the monsters of the world. More than my birth parents ever did anyway. I found my way to their keep after leaving the small, secluded forest my family made their home in. I fled from that place. From the old, ancient attitudes they held.

Anyway, I get distracted, but this has to do with why I was in Magnimar. This was to be my first mission, my first solitary expedition anyway. We had heard rumors that a particularly vile wererat originally from Wolf's Ear had made its way into Magnimar and was planning to set up a thieves' guild of its ilk. These creatures are manipulative beyond the capabilities of normal mankind. They are things that must be wiped off the face of Golarion. The plan was simple. I was to find the lycanthrope, hunt him down, and eliminate him. However, it wasn't quite that easy.

It turned out the thing had a family. And worse, an adopted family that had no idea of its evil powers. I attempted to confront the rat and its family intervened. In the process, I ended up rescuing the child from its cruel claws. Unfortunately, the city saw this as kidnapping rather than rescuing. Their idiotic police force arrested me as I was burning out the beast and about to slay it. They intervened and he escaped..I have no idea where to. The only positive aspect of this whole ordeal is they are not charging me with attempted murder, for there is no victim to claim that.

Intro 3:

And now, you humans think to rehabilitate me? To purge me of my supposed sins. I will play this game, pretend the role of the empathetic and remorseful criminal. It will purge me of this record and allow me to walk their streets unhindered. Until then..well, basic peace-keeping duties allow me to protect the population from less supernatural problems. Perhaps it will keep me from making a mistake next time.

That sounds kinda like Victus's story. Only difference is that with Victus, the critter didn't get away. Unfortunately, there wasn't anything left of said critter to prove that he wasn't after a child (Hungry dhampir ranger, VERY thorough), so imprisonment ensued.

Well if they both get accepted, they can plot the demise of unholy terrors together.

Yeah, Victus hates goblins. If he's alone with one, there isn't going to be much left of the goblin, other than a big red splash on the ground.

A few questions for submitted characters:
If the opportunity to join the Order of Forgotten Sorrows presented itself, would they take it? (Freia starts bouncing right about here) Would they do so as they stand now? What would have to happen, character wise, for them to consider joining?

If your character would never really join the Order, what do you see them doing after their sins are expunged?
As a player, what would you like to see happen if your character doesn't join the Order of Forgotten Sorrows, but is dismissed from their service as a Tear?

Edit: these could be answered by characters being submitted, but it is not necessary. These are just questions to pick my future player's minds a bit.

This has been floating about the other recruitment threads courtesy of GM Tallgrass, so I thought I'd share:
About The Campaign
The game will take place in Magnimar, a large, wealthy and adventure-filled Varisian city. Multiple factions exist in the same city, each with their own goals, territories, and members. You will play a character in one (or more, GM-approving) of these factions alongside the other factions in other threads, with other GMs. Your actions or inactions will affect them and theirs will do the same to you.

As you work towards the aims of your faction, you will increase not only your experience and character's fame, but that of your faction, granting you and your allies bonuses, equipment and prestige.

There will be intrigue. Interactions with other factions (yes, that potentially means PvP combat). And all manner of urban adventures. All in the hopes of spinning a grand tale.

Zayid would probably take it. It'd give him a purpose in life, which is something he's not really sure he has at this point; recent events have shaken him and left him with questions and few answers.

It'd also potentially keep him safe (or somewhat safe) from... certain people who might desire his harm. He'd be sure to take all that into account... but he's certainly not eager to return to life on the streets.

Victus would probably return to his solitary life in the wilderness. If he has to track goblins into a city again, he'll make damn sure that he takes them OUT of the city first.

Korrith... Poor guy will probably be in trouble again by the end of the week. He's near-constantly drunk, and he probably won't stop selling his demolitions services (boosted with black powder, since I'm considering giving him a level in gunslinger). And more people will be dumb enough to not wait until he's sober before hiring him.

As it stands right now, Freia would be glad if the offer to join came and she would take it - however she does not yet know that joining the sorrows will force you to sever all your connections with your previous life which may or may not complicate the matter.

If a large piece of the party were to decline the offer and instead continue to adventure together I could probably see Freia giving up her ambitions of joining and accompanying the other (if they were on good terms). She wants to join the Sorrows to have a place to belong, and an adventuring party and good friends could fulfil that need.

Arthiien might join up, depending on his experiences as a Tear. He's glad to have a purpose, he's glad to help this city, and he's glad the organization is multicultural, so to speak. He's not too keen on the masks, formality, and lack of partying ...but his experiences might bring him closer to agreement there.

Ariana would likely join. Her only ties are to a now distant human family. As long as she gets to continue to hunt monsters and help others, she's happy.

Potentially.

GM Choon wrote:

No.

GM Choon wrote:

Pelgrev's experiences working as a Tear, and any bonds he forms with his fellows would be the deciding factors. Did he start feeling a belonging or new purpose?

GM Choon wrote:

Maybe being recruited by Andorans to combat slavers?

I respectfully withdraw Lynnda from consideration for this faction; I think she'd work much better with the Aspis faction, and I really hope that she gets chosen there.

(I'm playing in another PbP where the PCs are prisoners forced to adventure, and upon reflection, this faction is a little too similar to that game.)

Good luck everyone!

Noted. And good luck with Aspis. :)

well Choon I decided to toss Noro into this..
she just got turned down for another game...

<<<must avoid rant>>>

anyway starting point in the alias will require modifications (but I think you already know most of her.

Indeed. Looking forward to seeing what you change. Welcome to the running. :)

DM:
I'm considering some slight stat adjustments to Zayid to differentiate him a bit more from another ranger I'm playing... you mentioned that you're picking primarily based on backstory and character personality, but I figured I should let you know anyway.

Oladon:

I appreciate it. Knock yourself out. :)

Well cool thing is that the stats were already good so I just changed the backstory ending to a more appropriate tie in.

Is it too late to choose a different character?

Lol voyd, no, it isn't, but it soon will be.

Here's another brain picky question for my wonderful potential players:

What kind of game (or what style of game) are youall most interested in playing? Mainly social, local cop kind of thing? Maybe hack'n'slash gang war kind of deal? Diplomacy and such as the Order grows? Let me know. :)
