The Order of Tears (Inactive)

The first Step is acknowledging that you have a problem...

I, Sorrow Caligrific, hereby induct you into the Order of Tears by the grace of our Lord-Mayor Gorbaras and the wisdom of the House of Lords. Your crimes are up for redemption in exchange for your service to your city. Do well, and all will be forgiven and forgotten by the law of this city. Fail, and your crimes will forever haunt you. For the Order of Forgotten Sorrows who guards your fates forgives, but it does not forget.

Adventure Background
Greetings adventurers! I am opening recruitment for a PbP adventure here on the Paizo boards. This will be part of the multi-GM and multi-faction extravaganza, the Loom of Fate. I will be GMing for a group of convicted criminals serving out a sentence of service to the city of Magnimar for the reward of complete erasure of their crimes.

I'm looking for 4-5 players who are able to post at least once a day to keep things moving.

IMPORTANT: About The Order of Tears:

This is a privately run rehabilitation center and low-security penitentiary focusing on community service as a means of expunging criminal offences. It's managing membership is called the Order of Forgotten Sorrows. Anyone can technically be sentenced here, and it has cells for long term incarceration. However, the order specializes in low security rehabilitation, basic military training, and street-level law enforcement.

Once a sentence with the Order is complete, any and all reference to the crime for which you were sentenced is expunged. The only remaining record of the offence is kept in a singularly massive tome guarded by the Order of Forgotten Sorrows. Failure to complete a sentence or poor behavior during one's sentence, will almost certainly result in severe legal backlash, as such a failing is never removed from the offenders permanent record, and serves as a serious aggravator for all future offences.

Members of this order are called "Tears", and are referred to by inmate number at all times.

Upon being sentenced to the Order, all official connections to one's family, work, and social circles are severed (though some contact through letters is permitted for good behavior). Members serve out their term by performing various duties depending on the nature of their offence. All activities are supervised by an attendant "Sorrow". Upon completion of their sentence, the member is restored to society as if they had gone on a journey, leave of absence, or vacation.

Order of Forgotten Sorrows
Any member of the Order of Tears who finds his place among the Order of Tears and wishes not to leave, or any citizen who qualifies, may be inducted into the Order of Forgotten Sorrows as long as they pass extensive reviews. Upon induction, they are declared officially dead, with all that entails. They forgo everything, including their names, and become a "Sorrow", with a chosen name usually representing the life events that lead them to join. They wear nearly identical full-facial masks and full black robes when with anyone except other order members, and rarely speak. This makes gender and race nearly indistinguishable. The only noticeable differentiation is in body type, the style of the mask, (which denotes rank within the Order), and that Sorrow's chosen name which is embroidered along the collar and edges of their robes in silver thread.

Application
To apply, please complete the (hopefully minimal) steps below.
1. Build a character using the crunch below. You don't have to create an alias yet (unless you want to). I mostly just want to get a sense of what you're thinking.
2. Share how often you can post/contribute to the game. I don't want to put unrealistic expectations on the group, but I'd like to shoot for one post per day on weekdays. If we go faster, I can do that.
3. Share why your character is in Magnimar — is he/she a newcomer to the city or a lifer? What is his/her "day job?" What was s/he convicted of, and why did the Courts think them suitable for the pseudo community service that is the Order? This is also known as your back story.

Character Creation Crunch
1. All characters begin at level one.
2. 20-point ability buy.
3. Any alignment is allowed, but you have been convicted of a crime. I don't care too much about alignment. I really only care that you're able to play well with others.
4. All Paizo-created races are acceptable, but core races are preferred. No custom or third-party races are allowed.
5. Paizo-created classes and archetypes only. No summoners, please. Paladins will need to get creative about how they got convicted of a crime without falling. We're playing with emerging guns in this campaign.
6. Two traits and one flaw (giving you three traits total). Try to pick traits that align with your backstory, not just add to your character's stats (or figure out how to add stat-boosting traits into your backstory). I'm fine with flavor tweaks to make traits align better with your character's story, but please let me know that you're making the tweak before you assume I'm ok with it (I probably will be).
8. Max gold for buying starting gear for your class. Keep in mind that the Order sometimes compliments the local Guard for street level police work.
9. Max HP at level one, roll or 1/2 HD + 1 thereafter. I'm fine with your rolling and then taking the better option for your level 2 roll.

To be clear: Your character need not have actually committed the crime. He just has to have been convicted. This means it is completely possible that your character has been framed.

I'm looking forward to seeing what youall come up with, and good luck!

What's the posting deadline? I'm interested but am trying to avoid getting overwhelmed by applying to too many games.

I would definitely be interested in this, I will have a character up shortly for your consideration.

I'm going to call a deadline of Nov. 2nd. I may extend of cut that short depending on number and quality of applications.

Definitely interested. I'm whipping up a ranger now and should have it up in the next hour or so.

I've a Gnome Barbarian in a little more than concept form. I will let you know more details as I have them.

You already know what I'm playing. I'm just making it official: Half-crazed kobold alchemist.

Yes. We already have one Kobold Alchemist due to him coming in and contributing during the formative process of this project. :)

The problem is that none of the drawbacks on the SRD really fit with Korrith's backstory. Unless you let me give him an insanity instead (namely, pyromania), I'm not sure how to make that work.

Dotting for interest may I use brigand trait from Kingmaker. My character is from Port Ice and fits in his back story of growing up on the streets and becoming a cat burglar / sneak thief.

thank you,

Voyd- If you slightly re-flavor Mark of Slavery or Xenophobic they might fit your needs.

Manzcar - The extra 100gp would not fit as you've already been caught and convicted. Thus, any 'ill gotten gains' would have been confiscated. The social buffs are fine.

So anyway... my alchemist, ladies and gentlemen! Here comes the backstory.

Korrith Embermaw:
Hatched in the Embermaw clan of Varisian kobolds, Korrith inherited two qualities of his red dragon ancestors that his tribe did not approve of: A chaotic spirit, and barely controllable pyromania. This recently led to an accident when, while attempting to set explosive traps for anyone daring to steal the eggs of Tsazgatherax the Embermaw, Korrith's unstable bombs destroyed one of the red dragon's precious eggs. Realizing that he had only minutes before the tribe discovered the tragedy, Korrith squirreled away as many of the dragon's shiny trinkets as he could, before beating a hasty retreat through the tunnels of the snarl.

When Korrith reached the surface, he found himself at an advantage. Because he had spent so much of his life around dancing flames, the rays of the sun did not bother him as much as it did his kinsmen. However, the experience of breaking a dragon's egg - which to a kobold, is equivalent to killing a godling - snapped his already strained mind. He has taken a liking to his own brew of ale, and incorporates it into everything he makes. He also possesses a phobia of dragons, while at the same time, his own pyromania has intensified to being nearly hypnotized by flame.

He traveled Varisia, serving as a demolitions expert when needed, though he always keeps one eye open for angry red kobolds.

When he came to Magnimar, he was hired by a cleric to demolish a rotting toolshed near his church. This was a rather terrible idea, Korrith succeeded at destroying the toolshed, but also at blasting a hole in the church wall. The cleric turned him in, though his judgement was questioned by the courts when he revealed that he had hired the drunken pyromaniac. Korrith's sentence was reduced to working under the Order of the Tears, as opposed to imprisonment for destroying a religious structure. The alchemist himself barely remembers why he's a Tear in the first place, but as long as he can make beer, bombs and potions for himself and others, he feels it's none of his concern.

"You want kaboom? Don't be mad when I kaboom something else by accident; you paid me, after all."

How was that?

WE BEGIN EDIT DANCE OF THE DEAD: Huh, Xenophobic could work as a half-crazed semi-obliviousness.

CAN'T READ MY, CAN'T READ MY, NO HE CAN'T READ MY EDIT FACE: I forgot to mention that I also drew Korrith at FULL ROID RAGE POWER. Yes, he has the red dragon crown of horns.

Presenting Corren, statblock and all. I ran off the Flaws in HeroLab and since there are no separate listen or spot checks, I figured it would just be a -4 to Perception. If that doesn't work, I can make something more or less severe as the case warrants.

I can post at least once a day, probably more depending on what I have going on in college or work.

Corren's in Magnimar because she tracked down a rogue who, through events in her backstory, wound up scarring most of her face with alchemical acid. She found him and dealt with him but didn't count on the authorities being so adamant that what she did was wrong. She's accused of murder (most foul) and was only spared because of the circumstances of the murder and some parties who didn't like her victim passing a moderate 'gift' to the Lord-Mayor.

I might have written a little too much for her backstory now that I've summarized it, but I had little else to do at work.

Background:

Correnarai was unremarkable for most of her formative years. Her father and mother were old adventuring companions who retired after a particularly terrible expedition into an abandoned tomb cost her father a leg. The family eventually settled in Wartle where her mother was able to provide the family a modest income as a trapper and guide in and around the frontier town. Corren grew up under the constant tutelage of her parents and had developed into a skilled tracker when she began to work independently from her mother. The fledgling ranger's defining moment came when one of her parents' old enemies predictably came looking for revenge. Corren woke to an intruder breaking into her family's home and instinctively moved to defend her home. The fight was brief and ended when the intruder tossed a viol of acid into Correnarai's and fled back into the marsh.

She suffered extensive burns along the lower half of her face that took nearly three months to properly heal even with the aid of a cleric. Her face was permanently scarred as a result of the attack and the half-elf found little comfort in her parent's reassurances. She learned her attacker's name during the course of her recovery and the story behind his grudge with her parents, a feud over loot from the same tomb that took her father's leg, and decided on a course of action.

Corren prepared herself as she recovered, secreting away the supplies she would need to pursue the rogue and making every effort not to clue her parents in on her plan. The young ranger wanted revenge on her attacker and set out with her father's sword as soon as she was able for Maginmar to intercept her attacker. The journey took far longer than was normal due to weather, bandits, and simple inexperience on the half-elf's part and she stumbled into Magnimar unprepared for the bustle of city life. Though she found a place to stay on her arrival, the ranger found herself ridiculed for her appearance and looked down on for her ancestry that began grinding her nerves down farther than her journey to the down had.

Her frustration, irritation, and plain bad fortune all came together when she found her attacker half drunk in a tavern. Corren struck without thought and slew the man where he sat, semiconscious, in the corner of the bar. The act of justified revenge looked like foul murder to most of the other patrons and the guards were quickly summoned to detain the crazed half-elf. Corren tried to explain her case several times but it took revealing her face to make the guards even consider her tale at all. Still, she had broken the law and was arrested to be judged at a later date.

Her sentencing came and when Corren pleaded her case, along with several testimonies as to the nature of her 'victim,' the ranger was given one option to avoid execution in light of her motivations: serve the Order of Tears.

Interesting. I wonder how she'll get along with Korrith?

But... humanoids are analyzed by Knowledge (local), not Nature.

That is a good point and something I forgot. BUT I DONT KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE IT TOTALLY HASNT BEEN EDITED or will be once I figure out if its a glitch or just some weird Ranger thing.

Its a glitch. It was displaying that for all the knowledge skills I had trained for some reason. And she'll probably dislike anything Korrith does with... well, anything Korrith does.

MightyDuck - Here is a list of the drawbacks we will be using. They are from Ultimate Campaign so your version of HeroLabs may not have this system. 'Inattentive' isn't on here at least, and you are missing one trait. The drawback gives you one additional for a total of 3.

Your backstory is all good.

Any reason in particular that Corren wouldn't like the kobold?

He makes a mean beer, and he's friendly, if alcoholic and obsessed with fire.

She isn't fond of alchemy, but I'm probably overstating it. She'd be uneasy around him while he was creating anything.

Aaand new statblock since I cant edit my other post, updated with the three traits and handwriting in the new, correct flaw. I went with burned, which can apply to any effects related to acid as well at your discretion, Voyd.

Korrith has the Xenophobic drawback, though flavored into madness-induced obliviousness. Yeah, no party facing for this little lizard, he already has a Cha score of 7.

YOU MUST BE SWIFT AS A COURSING EDIT: Have a stat block! I even took the mutagen into account.

Voyd - Looks like you're missing a trait you should have 3

Huh, the thing says two traits and one flaw/drawback.

Well, I changed it anyway.

When you gain a flaw/drawback you also gain a trait.

Okay, rules question. Would the Accelerated Drinker trait apply to extracts and mutagens?

Dotting for observation. It looks like it's going great so far.

Voyd211 wrote:

No, it does not, unfortunately, as getting the invredients together and throwing them down the hatch are all a part of the Std action.

Also, you may have only one trait from a single category. You currently have two race traits. :)

Really? Huh, didn't know that. The rules didn't specify.

Thee was a FAQ on it somewhere. I'll try to find it.

Is it alright if I throw out a couple of character concepts?

Basically, a race, a class, their ability scores, and whatever other tidbits are needed (bloodlines, domains, etc).

Basically, if someone wants to play, but can't think of a character to use.

EDITING JUST ISN'T HARD ENOUGH: Have a slightly revised version of Korrith!

You can, I guess. Just be sure to use spoilers so it doesn't get too wall-o-texty.

Can do!

Character concepts up for grabs:

Yes, that's a drow noble. Intentionally unoptimized. Base stats: 7 across the board.

I have just been informed by the Over-GM that we are looking at a deadline of Nov. 8th for character submission with the game starting on the 10th.

Dotting for interest.

Liberty's Edge

Hmmmm....I'll just say dot for now. I will be thinking about this.

dotting will have a concept up soon

Hey Choon sounds interesting

Hmmmmm maybe another Noro (former pirate?)

Dotting, will get a concept up when I get home

Heh, at least I'd know how one PC behaved. :P

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 32

Dotting for interest. I'll start reworking a character...

And then I had a second character concept, and I don't know who to use.

Hm... psychotic kobold alchemist, or goblin-hating ancientborn ranger...

What is an ancientborn? I've never heard of it.

Edit: Just found it. A campaign in a city might be tough for a race that is described like that one. That level of universal shunning would make working with others difficult. Still, I'll not say no until the 8th.

Nosferatu-born dhampir. It's in Blood of the Night.

Minor thing I'd like to point out which seems to have caused some misunderstanding... Flaw != Drawback. Flaws were a pre-Pathfinder thing that let you choose an extra feat, whereas Drawbacks are new in UCa and allow you to choose an extra trait.

Also, dot.

Edit: Then again, if you actually were allowing Flaws, I'd ask if I could bring in my Chicken Infested monk...

Submitted for your approval.

I can post once a day, often more, during the week. I can even occasionally post on weekends.

Pelgrev looks forlornly around his cell, and lets out a long sigh.

I had a life once. Now I am trap'd. No sky, no wind on my skin. No meaning. I failed the spirits of my father's fathers. Now I merely wait for death. Maybe then, ancestors will explain what I need to do for their blessings.

This is correct. Thanks for pointing that out.

Pelgev looks good. Welcome to the running. :)

Okay, I have a cunning plan. I'll use Korrith, but I'll keep the dhampir ranger on standby in case the poor kobold dies, which is a very real possibility.

Should I send you Victus's stats?

You can post them here in the thread, in an alias like Pelgev, or PM them if you really want to. For the actual gameplay, they'll need to be in an alias, but that doesn't have to happen quite yet.

"I am imprisoned with blood on my hands, on my teeth, but the peons know not. I feed not on humans. I respect my mother too much. This blood is the spilled gore of goblins, attempting to raid the market. I kill them all, and imprisonment is my thanks.

"I desire only to avenge my mother, and spill the blood of goblins... Perhaps these Tears can help me..."

Yup. Victus hates goblins. It's understandable for common folk to be confused, though. I mean, if you see a masked man with blood dripping from his chin, you're going to assume the worst.

Victus Kalrox, N dhampir ranger:

Victus

N ancientborn ranger

STR 18
DEX 12
CON 13
INT 10
WIS 16
CHA 7

Melee attacks: Switchblade +5 (1d4+4), Wooden Stake +5 (1d4+4)

BAB +1, CMB +5, CMD 16
Fort +3, Ref +3, Will +3

Alternate racial traits: Dayborn
Feats: Blood Drinker (goblinoid)
Skills: Intimidate +2, Knowledge (local) +7 (+9 vs goblinoids), Knowledge (religion) +4, Perception +7 (+9 vs goblinoids) Sense Motive +7 (+9 vs goblinoids) Survival +7 (+9 vs goblinoids)
Traits: Vengeful, Knowing the Enemy, Enemy of the Dead
Drawback: Pride
Favored Enemy: Goblinoids

I'll get a picture up as soon as I can draw one that I'm happy with.

And here's that picture of Victus I mentioned! I'm not 100% happy with it (his hands are supposed to be way bigger, think Viral from Gurren Lagann), but you get the basic idea.

Also, his mask has an opening mouth, like Reptile from Mortal Kombat. His gaping maw is also like Reptile's. Yeah, he's deformed even for a nosferatu-born.

Here is a concept I would like to submit. I can check in and write a reply once a day - and probably more often. Freia is almost done - there is still a feat to spend and gear to buy but you should get the general idea : )

The woman standing next to the table in the small briefing room seems surprisingly exited about doing the Tear´s work. A brief look at her reveals an inhuman ancestry for her skin is unnaturally blue with white lines running across it in all directions. Her hair, coloured in a lighter version of blue, is well kept and tied back in a ponytail with a piece of string and a hairclip. She wears an old and worn uniform that showed signs of having been resized and repaired recently but is cleaned and well ironed. Anyone with a familiarity with Magnimar heraldry can see that the uniform is from the city watch, but atleast forty years old.
