Checking in! :D
OK, Hope to have a decently done character by tonite mid-nightish. (Sat)
BUT I do not have access (yet) to the Adventurer's Vault or Player's Guide to FR 4.0. And I'm sure there will be things in there I would love to look at!
SO, Being that I'm atrocious with math to begin with, and I can't find a convenient listing in the DMG 4.0 that shows what levels up each lvl. (Skills, etc.) If somebody wanted to take a look and critique the build, I won't be offended. ;)
Hope you all had a happy Halloween, See you all in the Game thread soon!

That's because the page you want is in the PHB ;-). pp.27-29.
At eighth level, you've got:
+4 (level/2) to pretty much everything that's d20-based.
5 feats (level 1 + every even level) + 1 more if you're human
2 at-will powers (selected from 1st level)
3 encounter powers (1st, 3rd, and 7th)
2 daily powers (1st and 5th)
2 utility powers (2nd and 6th)
+4 total to stats (no more than +2 to any one)
Your number of skills is determined by class at 1st level (+1 if you're human), and only increases through feats.
Your HP is CON score + 8*the level bump, which I believe makes CON+32 for Wizards.
Your number of healing surges is determined by class and CON bonus at 1st level, and does not normally increase (some feats do).
I think that's it.

You're nearly there from the look of things. Your encounter powers still need adjusting though - most regrettably you can't take three level 7 encounter powers ... which is a pity, but there it is!
You get one from 1st, one from 3rd and one from 7th level. Same with daily powers: one from 1st, one from 5th in this case. The whole re-training deal just means you can swap out one 1st level power for a different 1st level power (or one 3rd for a 3rd and so on). It's not the clearest section of the book.
I recently built a wizard and feel your pain :D
By the way, what kind of things is Manny likely to want in terms of magic items? I have Adventurer's Vault and can do you a quick and dirty list later today if you can narrow it down a bit for me.

Grafire Serpenthelm |

Hi all,
I am trying to figure out the order of my attack.
On first round I think I would hold for all ranged attacks until the enemy is in for a close attack.
I think I will usually attack first with a Viper's strike at close range and work with the barbarian - Seram and the war forged - It to kill the heavies.
I have Wolf pack tactics to keep the enemy pinned between us to give us a flank attack bonus.
In the advent of a line minions I would try to use my Acid breath - burst 5 to take out most of the group. As long as no ally is in the way.
For healing, if myself or an ally gets more then bloodied I would use Inspired Word - minor action, close burst 5 only 1x per round but 2x per encounter. For a healing surge + 1d6.
Fabes, should we list our basic attack order on our profile to keep the game moving?

Hehheh, Manny's pretty simple. He likes things that go 'boom', just seems to have an aversion to fire at the present time. Not a good combo, actually. I just love magic. Period. And Manny (and I ) are pretty creative in finding ways to use items. So anything different or unusual that I can find an imaginative use for would be cool. (A wand of fire is great. A Wand of Polymorph Object is even better!) ;)
Actually, This wizard is even more confusing than normal.
Wizard's get to choose TWO daily/utility powers at each level, PLUS one more for Expanded spellbook, and gets to choose which two he uses each day. (SO I guess that he has 3 powers in his book of each level, and gets to choose 1 power from each level, not 2 from lvl 5?)
Wait, ENCOUNTER powers can only be one from each level?!? Where the heck is THAT listed?!? (Rackin-Frassin' mumble-jumble,...)I thought that when reading the examples on the D&D website (which aren't all that clear, actually), that you can swap a power for another power of ANY level you can use?!? I know I've read examples where they trade up.
<Sigh> Okay, one more trip through the book,... (Grrr,...)
I'll get it, i'll get it! Eventually,... ;P
Thanks guys!

Two daily or utility powers from each level where you gain a power of that type. There aren't any level 3 utilities, for example. And you prepare the spell in the orning, like in the good ol' days.
Wait, ENCOUNTER powers can only be one from each level?!? Where the heck is THAT listed?!? Power: You can replace a power with another power of the same type (at-will attack power, encounter attack power, daily attack power, or utility power), of the same level or lower, and from the same class
There are cases where you swap out a power for higher-level one, but that's a function of level, not the retraining rule, and doesn't start until level 13.

Pat o' the Ninth Power |

As the Warlord, you're a healer, with Inspiring Word. Keep an eye on us.
The other thing Warlords do is help their friends attack. Help us get in position, help us get opp attacks, help us do more damage, etc. You do most of this with your melee attacks -- warlords aren't much good at range.
I would strongly recommend taking Inspiring Presence, rather than Commanding Presence. You've selected several powers that are stronger for an Inspiring Warlord (you don't get those bonuses as the other kind). Inspiring Warlords do more with Charisma, less with Intelligence, which fits your stats.
I'd also recommend doing the math on your sheet. Instead of STR vs. AC, go ahead and work it out (STR + .5*level + weapon accuracy + whatever) so you don't have to calculate it on the fly, and the GM can easily roll for you if you're not around.
Looks good.

Grafire Serpenthelm |

I think I got all the numbers figured out. Could some one check my power bonuses though? I added in the level modified bonuses since they are not damage done by a weapon my thinking was it is correct to use those numbers. Is that right?
I had chosen Inspired presence, it was just listed in an odd spot on the profile. I also tried to pick powers with a decent mixture of healing, positioning and attack bonuses. I am with you on that for sure. Its all about flanking and bashing..;-) If you notice any powers you think I should switch out let me know.
I made a few spoiler buttons to clean it up a bit.
I also made a spoiler button for my "Attack Profile". Its not complete but let me know if you all think it is in the right direction. I think I can put a few ideas for my at will attacks in there.
I am pretty hooked on PBP so I should be checking in every day. I may seek out Rosey's help for my addiction...;-D

Mandrake the Mad |

OK!
I THINK I'm done!
Pretty sure I screwed up on some math somewhere, Probably the skills, but my att listings now has the to hits with the staff or wand added.
STill waffling on the staff/wand/orb mastery thing. (Took a magic staff as one of my items, and bought a basic wand +2 if I decide to stick with Wand mastery) I'll happily take others thought/ suggestions on that part. (Seems silly to carry both a staff AND a wand that are +2, but wand mastery gives you better to hit 1/encounter, staff makes a good weapon and defends,... ;P)
MAybe there is some cool new items in the Adventurer's guide that can take the place of my wand and 8th lvl staff that might be cool?!??? ;P
ANY -hoo! I'm also pretty much addicted to the PbP, I'll see you there!

I'm the one in need of help... That 12-step programme is getting more and more necessary.
Rags: Take a look at these random stuffeths and see if you think any of them sound like Manny.
Fan of the Four Winds - wondrous item: (Daily power) Standard action. Sweep this fan through the air and make an attack against a Large or smaller creature: Ranged 5; +13 v Fort; on a hit, you push the target two squares. Until the start of your next turn, each time the target moves a square closer to you, it must pay 1 extra square of movement. Sustain standard. If you end your turn more than 5 squares from the target, the effect ends. (level 8)
Jar of Steam - wondrous item: (Daily - Zone) Standard action. When you pull the lid off the jar, hot steam fills a close burst 1 until the end of your next turn. This zone of steam provides concealment to al creatures within it. Any creature other than you that starts its turn within the zone takes 1d6 fire damage. Sustain minor; you must be within 10 squares of the zone. (level 7)
Map of Orienteering - wondrous item. As long as it is opened, this map automatically and continuously reproduced the area within 100 feet in all directions. It can reproduce only what you can see personally, so invisible objects, undiscovered traps or secret doors and unknown areas around the next corner do not appear on the map. Illusions are faithfully reproduced unless you have previsouly recognised them as false. Creatures are not shown on the map unles they take the form of objects (for example a gargoyle in stone form or and earthwind ravager disguised as a pile of rocks) and have not been recognised for what they are. The map shows an area within 100 feet by default, but you can mentally command it to zoomin or out to display any areas explored within the last 24 hours (a minor action). The map of orienteering automatically erases and begins redrawing after you take and extended rest, unless you command it to do otherwise.
Stuff on staffs and wands follows.

Thanks Rev!
I also appreciate everyone's helpful comments/corrections on the characters.
ANd Thanks Again Rev for being nice enough give me a peek of other magic items. DOn't feel bad. Only by force of habit to I COPY everything I type before hitting send anymore. Just in case,... ;P
This is gonna be great!

We haven't heard from the cleric yet. I hope my powers of healing will be enough. If he doesn't make it I might request to change a power or 2 from attack to healing.
Our cleric is alive and well and strolling the streets of Ashenport. Check out the game thread, he is with us.

Have I mentioned that Seram loves/lives to fight. And it doesn't matter who or what. Just as long as they're strong, and look to be fun.
He'll be leaping, literally (yay ranks in atheletics), alot into the middle of combat. Just so he can fight the strongest person himself. I don't see him lasting long personally (Just because his has a decent Int/Wis, doesn't mean he uses it).

Ragadolf |

Heh, this should be good. We have an overly suspicious character, a character who luvs to fight/start stuff, and a character who just lives in his own world! ;P We're practically begging for it! (Whatever 'it' is!)
Speaking of 'It', I thought I'd mention that this is another funny coincidence. MAnny is based off my original 'Ragadolf' character, (one of my personal favorites!) and he also had a bodyguard! Also a golem, actually! (We were playing 'Fantasy Hero', from the Hero system line.) SO when you made the suggestion for It to be his bodyguard, I almost fell out! ;)
Great start guys! I'm starting to get a real feel for who's -who! I hope to be able to post on a (semi) regular basis, to keep the insanity flowing. The good thing about this character, if he doesn't respond for a dozen posts, and is responding to something said awhile back, that's pretty much in character for him! :)

And I'm thoroughly enjoying the eccentric wizard's responses...

Wow, you guys have posted loads! Sorry for the delay - I was away from my PC, and thus the adventure pdf, for all of yesterday. Poor Akahale and Rowan will receive a town map at some point, and the rest of you will have a chance to interact with the other inn guests.
Yes I was struggling to keep up and well... stay on the chair with all the hijinks going on!

Ragadolf |

Such a great start!
'Giant Shrimp' indeed,... ;P Being hunted by dragonborn, now THAT's a picture!
Keep it up guys!
Pat-
How do you want to explore/explain the relationship between It and Manny? I don't want to treat It rudely, (at least not any ruder than Manny will be to anyone else!) I guess we need to decide if Manny actually built him, or just found him buried in an ancient citadel somewhere? Or a combination of the two?
Let me know what you think, I'm gonna approach it for now as Manny treats him more like a manservant than a bodyguard, and gives him orders when combat comes up, which of course IT may or may not listen to, which will only serve to frustrate Mandrake!
I'm getting flashbacks to ST:TNG, is IT our version of Data? ;) THAT opens up a whole new world of possibilities! Maybe IT was an advanced prototype of warforged, and needs to find an ancient crystal to complete his personality matrix? ;)
Just brainstorming, tell me what you think!

Yes, he built him, but only because he found the parts in an ancient ruin somewhere! Excellent! He was trying to build a golem, and got a warforged! LOL!
OK, and now on with the show,... ;)

Ragadolf |

Heh, I just don't want IT to be left out! That's why I keep making comments to/about IT. Every time IT opens up and says something, that just gives me something else to gripe about! ;)
And I love Akahale's suspicious inquiries. (I just finished reading Vol 1 of the complete Sherlock Holmes,) ANYthing can be a clue! ;P

Rowan Darkwinter |

I wish 4e had a variant for the use of armorless characters. And what's funny here is that my character despises magic users, but has enough magic items to open his own shop :(.
But if I hadn't taken the items I wouldn't last long in combat.
So the question I'd like to ask is when is a magic item NOt a magic item?
Its just that those items you've got are viewed as heirlooms perhaps trophies from battle whose abilities come not from what is considered typical magic but granted from his ancestors literally they grant his equipment their abilities NOT some wizard for example, of course its also dependent on the campaign setting so what is the general view on the origin of our equipment?
Is Father Rowan making use of relics of his faith?
Is Manny using items he specifically created?
How do the others view their magical items?

Akahale Gilbrid |

In Akahale's case his armour is a family heirloom. It had to be modified quite a bit as he's a very small dragonborn, but it had been worn by generations of warriors before coming to him. Family in the case of dragonborn tends to mean clan more than blood relationship as they're raised communally, but he's wearing a bit of history. He carries the clan with him always.
The staff is something he created himself. When he made his pact, his power fused into the staff as a natural additional focus for him. That's my logic anyway. It's a bit like a lich's phylactery I suppose, except he won't die if it gets broken, just incredibly upset, more paranoid than usual and likely to wreck extreme vengeance on the breaker.
The cloak is a combination of a trophy and a gift. He dueled another warlock for it as part of his initiation. Akahale doesn't talk about his warlock training much, but a little known fact is that part of that training is the defeat of ones master in a duel. Death is not compulsory and in this case didn't occur. The cloak has passed to Akahale for now, but if he ever takes on an apprentice, one day it will pass to his successor. The one who defeats him. Shades of Zorro.

Ragadolf |

I'm still writing the novel,.. er,... the background/history for Manny. And to be honest I haven't really given TOO much thought about the items, yet.
Mostly they are either things that he made before the 'accident', things he found, or things he found and then modified. I am mainly trying to play Manny as if heading for the stormmage path. (Hence his propensity for talking to the thunderhead over the town!)
