Syrak's glaive manages to hit the demon, even with the crushing despair and partial cover!
All at once, a filthy creature resembling a small, wide-mouthed fat child made from leaves, vines, tree bark, dirt, and pallid tubers appears after hiding among the fungi and vegetation!
It opens its mouth and emits an unsettling shriek!

Once we've resolved the saving throw and know the results, Pandoor and Dorvhan will be up.

The cleric immediately casts a spell of silence on the table in the center of the room. He then backs up a bit, ready for more.

Since the DC was 15:
Everyone is a little sick to their stomach from the shriek, but no one is nauseated.
Dorvhan casts silence and moves!
Pandoor!

I ALWAYS forget that. Sorry about that. (I remember it for Enlarge, but not this. My turn doesn't actually change, but the silence isn't there.

![]() |

I'll keep the roll.
Pandoor begins to inspire his party with his oratory practice to enhance their capabilities. I'll be glad when we hit level 7 ;)
"Keep heart, friends and cousins! We shall overcome this challenge as we overcame the last one! Remember how we defeated the rhemoraz in the blink of an eye!"
Inspire Courage +2!
Meanwhile, he moves behind Dorvhan and draws his crossbow.

"Except this isn't a remhoraz," Falco quips, "It's a mandragora." He pauses, expecting everyone to know what this means. When it is apparent that no one else does, he continues, "It's poisonous. So just be careful." He keeps all other information to himself, not feeling like a lecture at the moment.

![]() |

Pandoor gives Falco a blank stare, clearly not understanding what his cousin means.
"Ah. Yeah, poison, right!" he says, after Falco said his piece of advice.

GM thunderspirit |

So, although it's not strictly Pathfinder RAW (rather a relic leftover from 3.5 edition), I typically allow a Standard one round and a Standard next round to complete a one-round cast. Up to Dorvhan.
Pandoor begins to inspire, and the incubus and madragora appear offended that they're not considered allies. The incubus takes his offense out on 1 Dorvhan, 2 Falco: 1d2 ⇒ 2!

Syrak's glaive hits home, and the demon's customary resistance is useless in the face of the Paladin's holy strike! Just then, Falco's grease catches the demon completely off-guard, and he falls prone!
The mandragora wobbles a bit, but maintains its footing, snarling and charging at Dorvhan! Provokes from Syrak, then from Dorvhan if he has a weapon in hand.

Pandoor, seeing that Falco doesn't interest himself about the shrine, he takes a happy tone.
"Oooh truly an interesting shrine! It's dedicated to Shax, also known as the Blood Marquis. Have you heard these songs that tell Shax as the demon lord of envy, lies, and murder? He's depicted as having the head of a dove and bird-like legs and he's known to eat the eyes of victims. His unholy symbol is a silver feather on a pool of blood."
He looks at his companions to see if they follow.
"And... and... also there are tales about Shax's realm being a vast mansion called Charnelhome. It's told to sit perched on an abyssal cliff, flanked by a thicket of blood-drinking plants. Shax is considered the progenitor of the cunning and murderous Babau demons, but also commands the loyalty of many shadow demons due to their envious nature. Thrilling, isn't it?" he says with a bright smile.

![]() |

Dorvhan takes in Pandoor's lecture, and responds as he sees best, "So do we destroy it before we move on?" He then goes over to tend to the elf.
He checks to make sure he's not going to revive any foes and gives a quick prayer to Desna as the room is briefly bathed in her power:

GM thunderspirit |

Syrak's muscle is not enough to break the chains. but his glaive certainly is.
The elf stares at Falco as he speaks, then respons slowly in kind.
He rubs his wrists where the manacles held him — you can see that each hand is missing some fingers — and continues.

![]() |

Falco waves his hand dismissively and continues speaking with the elf.
If the elf agrees, Falco simply responds, "Thank you, Sir Caldion." and turns back to the others.
After spending a few moments in discussion with the elf, Falco explains to the others, "Caldion here was ambushed by the drow, who he insists do not exist, and can no longer fight while missing several fingers. His elven allies are too far away to take down the drow before they slip back down into darkness so we need to chase them down and eradicate them. In return, Caldion will teach us what he knows about this ancient site. I think it's a fair trade, so let's get moving."

![]() |

"He knows they're real right? I get that's it's shocking, but they're real..." Dorvhan looks him over for signs of trauma beyond the physical Heal: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15, and then nods to Falco. "Let's do this before they get away."

GM thunderspirit |

Dorvhan is confident that Caldion will recover, and that a heal or regenerate spell should restore his lost phalanges. He does not appear otherwise in bad shape.

GM thunderspirit |

Syrak nods and asks "Before we go after them does anybody know how long this despair in going to last?"
LOL! CL 8, so eight minutes total.

![]() |

No spellcraft on Syrak, so I gotta get somebody else to tell me. Probably worth waiting if we think we can afford a few minutes.

![]() |

Dorvhan pokes Syrak, eyeing him to help answer the question. The dwarf decides that he has NO IDEA, so he defers to Falco.
If Falco can tell him, I am okay with waiting and then heading forth.

![]() |

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27
"Fine, if we wait just a few more minutes Syrak should feel better and then let's get moving."

GM thunderspirit |

Well played. :-)
The party elects to spend the time waiting for the despair to subside in the archive room, which contains the elves' observations of and dealings with the people of Cyrusian, the Thassilonian realm of pride. Even casual perusal of the books suggests that every Thassilonian citizen allowed into the forest passed through this checkpoint. You also discover a couple of renegade faction missions, including one that might once have appealed to Pandoor regarding trade between the elves and Cyrusian.
Following the path leading down and out from the archive, the excavated tunnel leads to a series of natural ones, each around 6 fet high and 5 feet wide. Falco and Pandoor have no difficulty navigating, and Dorvhan feels right at home; Syrak, on the other hand, feels somewhat claustrophobic, his draconic blood crying out for a return to wide open spaces.
A few minutes later the party comes across the remnants of a mushroom garden, host to a colorful riot of fungi. A jagged opening in the rocky southern wall reveals a tunnel that leads down into pitch blackness.
You get the feeling that an optional encounter might occur here, had your GM remembered to use the four-player adjustment in a Season 4 scenario. (Not that you really had much issue with the encounters anyway.) Alas, he did not, and thus the optional encounter is nowhere to be found here.

![]() |

Ha! well played GM!
"Syrak, are you going to be okay?" Dorvhan looks about for any hints of recent activity, or hidden dangers. Perception: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (6) + 20 = 26 Otherwise, he's ready to go.

GM thunderspirit |

Dorvhan notices some telltale signs that there has been frequent travel along these tunnels, and with a half-hearted attempt at Survival he can find and follow the trail.
A few minutes later (we'll say a total of 15 since the end of the previous encounter), the air grows subtly cooler and dryer as the tunnel opens into a wide cavern split through the center by a deep chasm. Air wafts up from the chasm, circulating throughout the chamber and to the chamber roof twenty feet above.
Map updated.

![]() |

Dorvhan continues to half-heartedly follow the trail (T10 for 15 on Survival, but 30 on Perception.)
"Well this seems like a good place for an ambush. Be alert my friends." Dorvhan punctuates his warning by casting a spell of Shield of Faith.
