Back! Thanks for your patience. GardenCon was really awesome!

Yes, it was! If you have a chance to come to Europe next summer and are interested in attending a 4-day outdoor convention in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, I strongly recommend you to come! About half the tables were ran in English (the other half in French), with many players coming from the UK, Netherlands, France, Germany, etc.

In case you're interested in checking out the Con's website (both in English and French)

An outdoor con? That sounds fantastic. I wish more places offered outdoor tables but I think there is a small minority in the gamer community who enjoy the sunshine, lol.

Night March starts on Monday! Purchasing will last until you depart. Probably mid to end of the week!

Be ready!

Just found out that it is Labor Day on Monday! (American holiday for our European friends.)

It's a day where people tend to travel for the weekend, so I will post the start of the next scenario on Tuesday.

Sound good?

Everyone let me know if your Perception or Initiative scores change when leveling and I'll update the dice blocks on the Campaign Info tab.

If it makes things easier (and if people want) I can also just assume everyone takes 10 on their day jobs and post those on the tab too. Just let me know what your take 10 would be. The alternative is for me to create a Day Job dice block so the GM can roll them when each game is finished.

Lithrac:
You mentioned in Siege of Serpents that you are feeling a bit burnt out. Would you prefer that I took over GMing for this one, so you can relax a bit?

Also, here is Paeter's Day Job with Take 10.

Day Job: 10 + 5 = 15

Grand Lodge

Thanks for the very kind offer, Bold Strider, I really appreciate it. "A bit" would be an understatement, actually.

Moreover, I must regretfully announce that I would like to bow out of the Flaxseed campaign altogether. As I've mentioned in my Siege of Serpents game, I've been feeling increasingly burnt out about PbP GMing for the last few months. I think that has been showing in my much slower posting rate, the abysmal quality of my posting (as GM and player alike), and the general lack of enthusiasm from my part in way too many games. It's not a lack of time anymore (it used to be when I had more than 20 ongoing games at the same time, but it's hardly the case now), it's a problem of motivation. "Burnt out" would be one way to put it in words, it's that situation when you know you have to do something, but keep postponing it indefinitely because you don't feel like doing it, that the simple idea of doing it is a huge problem for you. I've overcommitted to PbP, and now comes the price I guess. I just don't enjoy it anymore, save for a couple of games. The situation isn't new, as you surely have noticed, and has grown much worse over the past few months. So, rather than remaining a burden for the group, I prefer to bow out and allow you to find someone else that will be more interested in keeping this game alive. I'd like to thank you all for giving me the opportunity to play in this campaign and many others.

I think we all understand, Lithrac, and Bold Strider taking this one over is fine. We will all hate to see you go but this campaign could also really use a kick in the pants to get moving again.

The question for the rest of us then is this: losing Lithrac puts us at four people (one GMing and three playing). I think we'll be fine with this one since it's combat-lite but we should probably look at bringing another player in as a replacement.

Just so everyone is aware, BS is currently getting for ready for his bar exam, which is why he has been absent here and in some of his other games. Just thought I should warn you all. He should be back next week at the latest.

As a heads up, I will be taking the Illinois Bar Exam on Tuesday and Wednesday and travelling to Chicago on Monday. I am aiming to still get posts up, but I cannot promise that it will happen.

That being said, I'd like to wrap it up and get out Chronicles tomorrow if everyone can post something to allay Thomas.

Thanks for running that one, BS! And especially for finishing it up while getting ready for and taking the bar. Hope that went well!

-------------------------------------------------------------

Now, concerning this campaign I've had several thoughts that I've already shared with BS. Before we jump into the next scenario I think there are several things about this campaign that need to be revamped.

  • First and foremost, we need at least one more player to replace Lithrac so that we can at all times have one GM and four players. We could even bring on two more players so that we would have one GM and five players for each game and occasionally bring in a guest GM and all six of us play as a full party. The only downside to five players is the subtier adjustments but we could just try to avoid later-season scenarios when we are between subtiers.

  • Second is pacing: we really need to step up the pace. We started a little over a year ago and only have 5 XP. That means at this pace we won't reach level 12 for about another five and a half years! And that's not even counting the stuff beyond 12! And higher-tier scenarios and modules always take longer because the combats are more complicated! These low-level scenarios should not be taking this long. Here's an estimate of how long it took for each scenario:
    The Confirmation: 39 days
The Wounded Wisp: 95 days (!!!)
    Mists of Mwangi: 66 days
    Night March: 58 days
Library of the Lion: 116 days (!!!)
If we're serious about going as far as we can (and I still am, even if no one else is), we need to pick up the pace a lot. I think we should aim for 4-5 weeks per scenario as a maximum.

  • Before I go too much further building off that point, the thing that ultimately controls the pace of the game is the frequency that players and GMs post. I'm not going to blame any one person because honestly I think everyone in this group has been equally guilty of slow posting and lack of pushing with this game. I'm volunteering to run the next game and I am going to push the game a lot faster. I am expecting everyone to make their best effort to keep up by posting at least once a day. If you don't feel up to it, don't feel bad about dropping out now. We're already searching for one or two more new players, we can find another replacement if needed. But if you're committed to sticking with the group and going to 20, let's all make a pledge to do our best to make the pace as fast as possible from now on.

  • Another thing we need to do to help the speed of the campaign is rethink our scenario selection. We can still do some of the favorites; I really liked the Heresy of Man series and would like to replay it so I'm keeping it in. But we also need to consider the scenario itself; Library of the Lion was a lot of fun when I played it in real life but it was probably too complicated to pull off efficiently over PbP and thus we spent 116 days on when we could have probably finished three simpler scenarios in the same amount of time. We should try to stick to scenarios that are a bit more straight-forward and can be run quickly. Investigation scenarios are great but they tend to be a little slow over PbP and with this group I think we should focus on speed and simplicity for the sake of finishing in a reasonable amount of time. PbP is already a slow medium, let's not make it slower by choosing complicated scenarios.

  • On that last note, I've volunteered to run the next scenario but I have wiped most of the scenario list from our "campaign scenario outline" so that we can rethink our schedule a bit. If anyone has any suggestions for what to play next, let me know and I will start it as soon as we get some replacements on board. Oh, and start suggesting or asking around about replacement players!

Thank you a lot BS for the scenario! Also, thank you EF for pointing all of that out. To be honest, my motivation went down a lot after Lithrac deciced to quit the game (obviously). But I'm ready to go forward and continue at a faster pace. I've slowed down a bit in PBP lately as I'm writing my thesis and I started my own AP (Carrion Crown) in PBP with a group of french-speaking friends.
As for my character... I'm getting a little bored with the sorcerer class and in this little group, I fear to do the same stuff Falco does, slightly worst. I'm thinking to retrain him as a bard, maybe, so that we'll have a support build. What do you think about that?

    Grand Lodge

I understand with being busy; this year has been really tight for me as I've been trying to finish all of my class work this year but I should be done with classes by May and then I can just focus on writing my thesis as well.

As for Pandoor's retraining, there is a fair amount of overlap with sorcerer and wizard but a bard would provide some variety, not to mention some backup healing. But I say do whatever you want.

    Hey guys!

So EF gave me an invite to this campaign. I have to say, I'm super excited. Here's my schtick:

    1. I'm happy to stick with the Halfling. Honestly, the last time I played a halfling it was 1e, and it's time I changed that.

    2. I've played with everyone in this campaign before. I can definitely commit to playing fast. My teaching schedule this year (and next) allows me to post an unreasonable amount each day. Unless my fiancee and I are away, or I'm at a convention, I'll be here to post.

    3. I just retired my cleric of Sarenrae, so I've already been kicking around the thought of a new cleric. Based on what we have, a cleric of Desna seems like a good fit.

    4. My level. I'd be lagging behind, but I've got some core games in play right now. I can apply the credit to this character, so I estimate by the time we all hit 4th level, I'll be caught up.

    5. Scenario options. I don't know what you guys have in the pipe, but I've played a bunch of core over the last few months. I don't know if my presence messes that up. The first 3 GM XP I'll be applying to this character is the Quest for Perfection trilogy.

    6. GMing. I'm happy to GM. I JUST qualified for 5 stars, so that means I'm cutting back. This is a good thing as I can pay more attention to what I'm running.

    7. I'll have a character ready ASAP.

    8. Thanks again EF and everyone else for letting me in. See you in a bit.

    The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Welcome! I think we will also be joined shortly by Pirate Rob. This is looking like a really good group!

For those who just joined, our campaign scenario outline is above. You can request favorite scenarios to replay if you want and you can also volunteer to GM certain scenarios. We're in the process of filling it back in if you have any suggestions and if you've already played something, just make a note and wipe it off or volunteer to run it. Once we get it filled it, it should serve as a template for what not to play/run outside this group so we don't run in to problems.

As for what to play immediately, can everyone play 00-13 The Prince of Augustana? It's a pretty quick and fun one and if no one has played it in Core yet, I'll get it started in a couple days once the new folks have settled.

His prized possession is the Butterfly, a masterwork dwarven waraxe custom forged to have a butterfly shape to the blade. He was picked on as a young lad (he's been following Desna as long as he can remember.) It's left him a bit bitter about it, and he hates bullies.

He is officially built and ready to go.

  • Hey guys, I'm going to be gone from Friday afternoon to late Sunday. I'll be on a snowshoeing hiking trip in Northern Vermont, where my connectivity is spotty at best. I'm guessing I won't be posting until I get back.
