Length of time the player has known their character? 15 years
Amount of time to rebuild them for a new campaign? 2 weeks
Look on the player's face when you kill their character in the first combat? Priceless
There are some dreams imagination can't kill.
For everything else, there's the Dungeon Master.

True story, happened last week with my IRL group. I, well, let's just say that I accurately predicted their assumptions and crafted an encounter that hm... defied some of their expectations. So half their prep work, plotting, scheming, etc... pretty much went right out the window. My lead player - the strategist - she looks at me from across the table and says, "You are an evil, EVIL B@ST@RD!"
I smiled and said (as if everyone in the world naturally knew this to be true), "Of course. I'm a DM... God I love this job!"

I've e-mailed Pete's player, and checked on the other game he's in. They're also missing him. I hope nothing bad has happened, but I'm now unsure of what to do with his character. I'm keeping Gram around because it's easy to have him sit quietly (and his player may want to come back to him when RL things settle down), but Pete isn't that kind of dwarf. I don't want to write him out in case his player comes back, but I also don't really have time to try to figure him out to RP him properly. Thoughts?
When we were still planning out the "group idea", Pete's player seemed to like the idea of having him sign-on because "the wee dainty princess" needed an expert mineralogist for some reason. Upon beginning play, he further showed excitement over Duke Kirmoon's rock sample. Subsequently they have also both demonstrated an interest in tinkering (i.e. disable device) and even worship the same deity. While Alexis has a protector/protectee relationship with Elorin and often discusses philosophy and strategy with Rath, she and Pete actually share quite a bit of common interests.
While he might have been played as being rather boisterous, perhaps he spends a lot of time tinkering or reading thru Alexis' father's journal during the voyage. That might cause him to keep to himself a fair bit and out of Biter and Rath's hair (or lack thereof). In this case, he could he could be treated as a hireling under Alexis.
Now if at some point you decide that you just don't like him being run as a hireling, I've mentioned a few times (including in her original advancement plans) that I'm very much considering a 1-level dip in Rogue for some better survivability and device-based resources. (i.e. showing an investiture practicality training from Pete, Elorin, Rath, and Biter vs. the book-learning she has always known.) True we'd lose out on a character with lots of sneak attack dice and I'd be 1-level behind in spellcasting, but depending on the level-range you are projecting for this campaign, that might be a non-issue. Only you really could say. (Unless you would allow me a 1-level gestalt as a "patch", that is.)

My vote is to find someone who wants to PBP and has the time to run either Pete or a new character. He can either be a passenger that steps up or the cheesy route of encountering a ship that ran afoul of pirates and we find him/her in the wreckage.

Yah, if he's just not engaged in the game, i'd say we pick up a replacement player. But if something has just kept him from being able to be available, I'm leaning towards cutting him slack until his time is freed up a little more.
(And i want this on record for when my kid comes in a month or so... as my time will be much less my own)

You will have plenty of time to post at 3am when he has you up for the 3rd time that night...trust me! LOL's
We finally got over that stuff about a year ago!| abbas |
well just got some bad news myself....from May 30th through June 18th I will be gone. As i think I've said before im in the army and and we are going on a training exercise for 20 days. During the 20 days I might be able to get back to a PC maybe twice and will check in if I do. Anyway question is would it be ok to have Abbas NPCed while im gone?
| Alexis Kirmoon |
IMO it's only right to support our troops. Abbas is a pretty quiet guy anyhow so I don't think it would strain believability at all.
As a thought: Given RealLife™ circumstances, would it be wise for us to each work out in advance a partner to NPC our character in combat if necessary? Alexis and Elorin would be a natural pair (given the whole bodyguard thing), what do the rest of you think?

So, finally found where every one's come from. Don't mind me. Jus' puttin' a Dot in'a place t' keep an eye on all'a th' fun you's havin'. (^_^) Well....also throwin' a line t' show in'erest in joinin' up, if'n it in't too late. *^_^* Cheery-O!

Suny, You could always check the Gamer Connection forum, where actual recruiting takes place, but no reason not to express your interest here as well. Sometimes DM's gets busy too, so cut 'im some slack, OK. :-)
Nazard, Since I have some PbP games that seem to be dying on me, I would not mind jumping in with Felmor, or taking over an existing character as well. Just let me know if you put the call out, he he
| Alexis Kirmoon |
FWIW, I'd like to see Pete remain in play, whether by his original player or by Eric. Given the interactions we've already seen between Justin and Eric in other games, I think it would work. However, we'll have to wait and see what Nazard thinks.
This thread is probably the best place for soliciting him.
| Suny |
Oh! Heaven ferbid any one faln' by th' way side! That'd be terrible!
Um, who gets their stuffs...? >.>
Ah well, all I c'n do is hope Nazard pops back in a reads me request.
Oh, an' I cain't find anything lookin' like a request fer hook up in th' Gamer Connection threads....V_V..
Cheers!

I would not mind taking over Pete if he does not show up, his character sounds like a lot of fun to play, Just gotta wait for Nazard to give the OK on it. It is easier for me to jump in and take over a character, than make up my own., anyway, he he

It's nice to see so much interest in joining this thread. My problem with adding even more PCs is that the party is already quite large. That being said, I have no problem with Eric taking over Pete, with the caveat that his original player get him back if he returns and is still interested. If that should happen, we'll just let Eric fashion another character and deal with the 9 PC party.
I'm hanging onto Gram for the moment, as his player is still very much active on the boards and I hope he'll be able to find the time to return. I'll contact him and see if it's likely to happen.
I can tell you right now, though Suny, that that Water Adaptation feat would be a definite "no". A feat that gives you the effect of a permanent third level spell and a swim speed? I also don't care for the Rich Parents trait, but I notice that Elorin also used it and I didn't notice (no fault to Elorin since I hadn't said anything about it), so that one is okay.
Creation rules for this game already allow for 1.5 times max starting gold (which may include 1 masterwork item if it fits your budget).

Um...Izz'at a 'No' then fer m'selfs character joinin' in'a fun? (¬.¬)
*crosses fingers and toes and makes wishes for the positive*(^_^)
Um, besides a DOT, do I get a lil' hint maybe?
*toes still crossed* 'Cause t'is hard t' type wi' yer fingrs crossed. :P

Hey, I just want to toss my thoughts in here as well (not that they were asked for). As a later addition to the team myself, I'm fine with the idea of picking up/exchanging players as the game progresses, my only concern is for Nazard.
As already stated, the team is already bloated, and let's face it, at the end of the day, more players means more effort/headache for Nazard. If he becomes disinterested or beat down by the game, the game will die. So my only concern here, Nazard, is that you make the decision based upon what you will be happy with moving forward. If you think they would be an awesome addition, and the game/encounters can handle it, then I say pull the trigger. There's even some talk of new players taking over existing characters… again, as long as it's Kosher with Nazard.
I just really want to protect his interests.
Also, Dot might have been the cute one… but Whacko is insane!

Nazard, don't feel rushed or anything like that to include me in this if you think there is any chance the original player will return, I will read throough the IC and OOC threads again, and wait on your call.
BTW its not the Water Adaptation feat that concernes me about Suny, its her...personality, he he.
