Oops! I forgot the Water Elemental is large, so I adjusted the size on the map, but due to my mistake I kept its original distance from the party. However, since it is large, it does have reach! Now, who does it attack? Raziel hurt it the most, but Ilya also hurt it ... Oh well, it has 2 attacks! Haha!
1st attack on Raziel - 4 due to Water Mastery: 1d20 + 12 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 12 - 4 = 19
2nd attack on Ilya - 4 due to Water Mastery: 1d20 + 12 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 12 - 4 = 17
Damage to Raziel - 4 due to Water Mastery: 1d8 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (5) + 5 - 4 = 6
Damage to Ilya - 4 due to Water Mastery: 1d8 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 5 - 4 = 2
6 damage to Raziel & 2 damage to Ilya.

I believe the bonus is to one damage roll. For example, a Fireball is one damage roll (bonus damage applied to the only damage roll), but a Magic Missile at level 5 would be 3 damage rolls (choose one Missile to add the damage to).
I concur with Uriel's assessment.

Lonam Asri |

Lonam will move through Boudacia's space to the ledge hex above the Bunyip, while drawing his dagger. "I will finish off the Bunyip, focus on the mephits."
I have no +1 weapons and coup-de-grace requires a full round action and I need to move there, the Bunyip will still be asleep so I think even I can get this hit delivered.

Ummm ... two things Lonam. First to be clear, you say to focus on "the mephits". There was only one mephit to begin with and it was killed off by the fireball. Secondly, and more importantly, you moved your icon off of the ledge and into the water, so that would require a swim check to move to the location you want. In the interest of time I'll go ahead and roll that Swim check for you.
Lonam's Swim check: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (7) - 3 = 4
Lonam jumps off of the platform into the water, but is unable to maintain control once in the water and loses his sense of direction momentarily. Just flavor text, I moved your icon back to the first space in the water. Interestingly enough you can still make the Coup de Grace from that location on your next turn.

Lonam Asri |

ok, here goes the pita turn for Lonam. I had said I was drawing a dagger, but I have a morningstar, I am not sure if a morningstar would do less damage because of slapping into the water? If the bunyip is on the surface, I'd rather use the morningstar.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 (if needed)
and damage
Morningstar: 2d8 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5
or
Dagger: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3

The All-Seeing Eye. |

Lonam, the bunyip is underwater, and as per the Table: Combat Adjustments Underwater under Aquatic Terrain since you did not pass the swim check, the damage for either weapon would be halved. You did specify you were drawing the dagger and since a coup de grace is a full round action - Sorry, but sticking with the dagger. So 2 damage to the bunyip & Fortitude save ...
Bunyip' Fort save DC 10 + 2 damage: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
And the bunyip wakes up - VERY mad! But not its turn yet!

Question: the space where Uriel is. Is that where the portcullis is located? If yes, it is currently closed, right?
No. Uriel is in an open passageway at the same level as the platform. The portcullis is in an underwater passageway, indicated by the ugly yellow/green double arrows next to Ilyanaro's icon.
EDIT: I have now edited the map to include an image of a portcullis where it is, just remember it is underwater, so 5 ft down to the top of the 5 ft portcullis, which is currently closed.

Seeing nothing useful she can do to the Bunyip, Boudacia uses her action to keep watch for other threats.
Ummm ... Perception perhaps then? +2 for familiar, +2 at night: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Boudacia does not spot any other threats or anything of interest.
Granted that you have nothing left to attack the bunyip, but I'm certain you have not used Fortune on each party member within the last 24 hrs right? And that is a quite useful hex in and of itself! Especially when combined with your Cackle Hex! I mean, besides the 'Slumber', between your 'Misfortune', 'Fortune' and 'Cackle' there is almost no reason you would ever need to resort to spells! You are FAR from being out if this fight Boudacia!

Raziel Drakan |

Not sure if I can do this, but since Stealth is a part of the move action, I believe so.
Hiding around the corner, Raziel tries to cast a spell to catch the bunyip unawwares.
Stealth: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31
Then:
Ray of Frost(touch): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Damage if it hits: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Ray of Frost CRIT?: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Additional damage if it crits: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 <- Crit is only x2 right?
Plus SA if applicable:
SA: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8

My apologies! When I said I would post sometime on Monday, I was NOT expecting it to be this late! But, I basically slept from about 3:00 AM to 5:30 PM!! The All-Seeing Eye. |

Uriel looks rather clumsy in his attack, but his sword still proves true! The bunyip suddenly jerks spasmodically and then ceases all movement. Dead! - Out of Initiative!
What does the party wish to do now? - There is a possibility of closing the portals if you wish. Doing so would make the probabilities of a successful rest MUCH more likely! (Cough, hint, cough, cough, hint) ...

"What do we think about closing those portals? I am confident that it can be done, if not exactly sure how to do so just yet. If we eliminate the easy way in for extraplanar threats, that will secure our rest much better, I think."

"Wait, we can close the portals? Why didn't we do that to the one that was supplying all the water and making that dangerous current?"
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! ... Ummm ... Duh?
To be fair, someone did say something about it and I made a reply suggesting that it might be a difficult task or something like such, but I never said it couldn't be done!
***************************************************************************
Know. Arcana is definitely the best knowledge for this and since Ilya got such a high number:
Ilya realizes that casting the spell Dispel Magic may close the portals. There is a possibility that this will only be a temporary solution, or it may be permanent. All of it is going to depend on how powerful the spellcaster that created these portals was, and just how powerful the spell-user is that tries to dispel the portals.
According to my understanding of the RAW this would be considered a Targeted Dispel against a spell. Since this is a very important roll, I will let players discuss this if they want, and once decided who is going to cast it, that player should make one dispel check (1d20 + your caster level) per portal - PLEASE BE SPECIFIC AS TO WHICH PORTAL YOU ARE ATTEMPTING TO CLOSE! - and per spell used, to try to beat the DC known only to me. I will say this, hope for a VERY high roll! And no, you cannot take 10 or 20 since there is definitely a chance/consequence of failure here. Consequence you say? It may be only as simple as that you have used up that spell for the day. ... Or maybe there will be some other consequence? - Let the players be ware! :-D

Boudacia |

"Because we just thought of it Uriel." replies Boudacia rather sheepishly, then continues after a pause "You gentlemen believe these portals can be dispelled. Well I have Dispel Magic memorised twice. As I understand it it becomes harder to dispel the magics the more powerful the caster is. I don't know exactly how powerful whoever created these portals is or was, but I can't do anything like open such portals, so it stands to reason they are much more powerful than I. I can try however. Which portal do you want closed first? If I manage that I can try a second and if I fail I can try a second or the first portal a second time."

Raziel Drakan |

I am almost 100% sure we had discussed and analyzed the portals before...
Stormstrider, I assume there is no loot to be found from the elementals or bunyip, right?
Raziel gets Jurix out of the pack, and allows him to roam free over himself - "you have to be sick and tired of being in there..." - he replies to an almost inaudible clicking sound from the scorpion.
I cannot be totally sure, but I believe some portals have water coming in, and others have water going out? If so, I would target one that has water coming in. Maybe the one in E5 I believe?

![]() |

Just because it may have been discussed doesn’t mean Uriel picked up on it, especially if big words were used...He is not the sharpest tool in the box...
”Makes sense to me, Boudacia, although maybe If you shut the portal causing that strong current, the water level will fall and we can stay in a dry room with no portals. As high priestess of the alien god, maybe you can pull in some favors to dispel the portal.”
Bit of Luck and Guidance could be useful too, right?

The All-Seeing Eye. |

So far you have discovered portals in E5, E6, E8, & E9. E5 is the only one that you know for sure allowed/brought water in. E6 has not been investigated in any way other than a glance. E8 is the only one known for certain to allow hostile creatures to come in. Just giving you a breakdown of the info you have available. Not making hints/suggestions.

Boudacia |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

"I will see what calling on the deity will do Uriel, and it is "your holiness" if you please." replies Boudacia, who fails to keep a straight face while making these preposterous statements, before turning thoughtful and adding "And you are right, closing the portal bringing in water would do that, I think. Or we could try to close the portal that is allowing in monsters. Unless we get very lucky, or the divine aid really comes through, we are only going to close one portal at best. So which one?"
It is Uriel not his player who is a bit dopey it seems. Can anyone use Bit of luck? Fortune Hex will not help, as I won't be rolling an "ability check, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check" sadly. :( Could we get a bonus from any other source. Sacrificing something, maybe metal, or someone to the Troglodyte god perhaps?

Lonam Asri |

Lonam has nothing left in his current spells that might help.

Ilyanaro Balmaris |

"I do not have the requisite magic."
Ilyanaro flips through his spellbook with a frown.
"It would appear I have neglected some of the more important defensive magics, in favor of offensive tools."

![]() |

Uriel doesn’t have a lot to help with. Unless we can find a room with breathable air and no portals, we may not be able to finish our rest.
