Vauntil: Map - Site

Fifty years ago in the town of Vauntil, Ustalav, the weak-willed cleric, Deusten de Mon, succumbed to the treacherous promise of power issued by Orcus, the god of undeath. Deusten's devout followers proved to be useful allies, coming together under the auspice of necromancy to form the Cult of Shadows. Using their necrotic powers, they fouled the waters of the Raiteso River which drains into Lake Encarthan - Vauntil's main source of fresh water. The town quickly fell ill from imbibing the tainted water. While they were crippled, the Cult of Shadows struck. Led by Deusten's powerful magic, they summoned an army from Vauntil's cemetery and effortlessly rampaged through the town. In short time, the size of their army doubled. It wasn't long before Caliphas received word of the shambling army ravaging the country side and dispatched troops to eliminate them. Over the course of a year, the Caliphas army fought the Cult of Shadows, hunting down necromantic uprisings when they arose until all signs of the cult were vanquished. Forty-nine years passed without evidence that the cult was still in existence, but that has changed with the recent events in Vauntil...

The Call to Arms:

Only a few days ago on the night of the full moon, the governor of Vauntil, Lucious Irkrile, received a haunting letter signed only with the mark of Orcus. It demanded that 6 children must be delivered to the Crypt of the Undying in handcrafted coffins, lest the town be sieged by undead...again. Lucious was not about to place such a terrible responsibility on the families of Vauntil, nor was he about to go about this in an unsavory manner, so he decided to confront the issue head on. Without a standing army of their own, Vauntil must rely on volunteers, mercenaries and aid from the protectorate - Caliphas - to answer his pleas for heroes. A reward of 250gp per hero has been offered.

Campaign Summary: I am looking for 5 or 6 players who are brave enough to venture into the Crypt of the Undying to root out the source of evil that threatens Vauntil. This is homebrew set in the predefined town of Vauntil, which is subsequently located in Ustalav. I will be using the fast experience track and expect the players to reach second level by the end of the adventure. There will be plenty of opportunity for continued play and further investigation after the main quest is finished. Please provide a simple background for your character too! Combat will done using Google Drawings - I will upload the map and add the character tokens and share it with the players, who can then go in and move their players on their turn, place arrows for movement and draw icons for special effects.

Background:
Elorin Moonshade was born and raised in Crying Leaf and trained as a holy warrior of Sarenrae to fight against the horrors that have taken Celwynvian. During his training Elorin's skill with his bow lead him to be assigned to a scout company where he met Yasmine, a young ranger. They quickly became friends and over the years fell in love.
One fateful day their squad ventured too far into the ruins of Celwynvian and become overrun. During the ensuing melee his fiancé was captured and killed. Elorin barely escaped with this life while pulling his squad leader to the closest out post.
The paladin demanded the defenders mount a rescue attempt, but the Captain of the outpost would not send a squad to recover her body, the cost of such a raid would be too high in elven deaths. Elorin was told not to return, but the young elf disobeyed his orders as soon as he reequipped and hastily healed. Alone, Elorin crept back into the ruins spending days hiding and moving in deeper until he finally found his beloved. To his horror, Yasmine had been changed into one of the cursed undead. Her beauty had ben twisted into something unnatural. She had been made a servant of Kozaric, once a lord of Celwynvian, now an elven vampire.
Elorin made his way into the ruined manor that housed the vampire clan, but found out why vampires can sleep unmolested during the day in such a place as Celwynvian. They have servants that do not fear the light. Beaten and battered and using the last of his holy power, Elorin was once again forced to retreat. He knew dying would not free his beloved so he retreated back to Crying Leaf and made his report to his superiors, accepting his punishment for disobeying his orders.
After his prentice was complete, Elorin resigned his duty to Crying Leaf and vowed to gain enough experience and knowledge to one day return and slay Kozaric and give his beloved her eternal rest.
Now the paladin travels the wild lands of Varisia, hunting the undead and praying to one day assail Celwynvian again.

Roleplaying:

The shadow slipped between the trees on the outskirts of town. It cloak a mixture of brown and greens that made it seem to blend into the vary woods it traveled. It comes to a stop unseen by the guards by the gate and grips a lovingly polished bow with its left hand while it crouches and watches the gate.
” Vauntil, yet another town beset by evil. Sarenrae, please give me the power and strength to search out this evil and expose it to your cleansing fire. “ The shadow stands and moves from the trees and walks towards the guards removing its hood to expose the face of a young elf that has been hardened beyond its years. The elf slings his bow and exposes the palms of his hands as he nears the gate before stopping. ”I am Elorin Moonshade, paladin of Sarenrae, The Dawn Flower. I seek entrance to your town to answer the call for heroes.”

The elf is motioned through the gates, the formality of his actions lost on the guards. Elorin makes his way through the town assailed by the smells and sounds until he finds himself at the town hall. The paladin stands still for a moment on the steps looking at the door, his thoughts going back to Celwynvian and his beloved Yasmine, back to the horror he felt, and the pain. The elf opens the doors wide and enters. His bow now unknowingly has made its way into his left hand as he stands in the entrance way. ”I have come. Let The Dawn Flower’s fire burn.”

Q. What is your motivation for helping the people of Vauntil?
A. To slay evil that threatens the innocent and in doing so gain skills and power.

Q. What was the last thing you did before falling asleep last night?
A. Pray to Sarenrae to give him strength to meet the morning and for the soul of his beloved Yasmine

Q. What is your (your character that is) goal in life?
A. To slay the master Vampire Kozaric and free the soul of Yasmine.

Q. What is your greatest fear?
A. To be slain and rise again as undead.

This sounds great! I've been so busy with school (in fact I am currently waiting for my ASL midterm video to upload at this moment) I haven't had much time for my normal PFS let alone time to find a playgroup! Is there anywhere I could go to learn more about how online campaigns work? I have a lot of experience with both 3.5 and Pathfinder, but I've never done an online campaign before...

Fallen_Mage here. Some crunch and backstory in the profile, I will finish the crunch when I get home.

The Answers to your questions:

Q: What is your motivation for helping the people of Vauntil?
A: Hearing of the plight, Izo figured it to be a good start for his noble quest knighthood to help people in distress.

Q: What was the last thing you did before falling asleep last night?
A: Made sure Kosa was comfortable in the stables.

Q: What is your (your character that is) goal in life?
A: To become a legendary knight.

Q: What is your greatest fear?
A: To fail those he has sworn to help in their time of need.

Dotting for interest. Thinking of an Archon blooded Inquisitor of saranrae. Working on the crunch.
Q: What is your motivation for helping the people of Vauntil?
A: As an inquisitor of Saranrae even the hint of undead was enough to start his track to this dreaded place.

Q: What was the last thing you did before falling asleep last night?
A: Check the campsite for anything dangerous, clean my weapons and lay to rest in the knowledge that tomorrow morning the sun would be there!

Q: What is your (your character that is) goal in life?
A: To be wellknown hunter of the undead and be an example to generations to follow. To become worthy of his ancestry.

Q: What is your greatest fear?
A: To be overwhelmed by undead and be forced to join them.

Starting wealth: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 2) = 6 - 60Gp, what more could a barbarian want? ;-)

Very interested - should finalize Iliya (Barbarian) rather soon (especially with so little money).

Dotting for interest, probably a Priest of Pharasma, possibly an Elf.

Q: What is your motivation for helping the people of Vauntil?
A: As a Priest of Pharasma, a staunch opponent of Orcus, his goal is to destroy undead and limit their influence on the living, this letter would draw his attention.

Q: What was the last thing you did before falling asleep last night?
A: Prayed to the Lady of Graves to watch over him. Then sent prayers regarding the souls to be judged

Q: What is your (your character that is) goal in life?
A: To destroy undead and limit the influence of Orcus on Golarion. After that it would be to assist those close to death in understanding their role in the cosmos and how they will be judged by the Lady.

Q: What is your greatest fear?
A: To give someone false hope about the afterlife, to lead them into a belief that their mortal actions do not matter and they will not be judged by their beliefs and actions.

I'll post crunch later.

Looking good so far. I figured there would be quite a bit of faith-based motivations here, and I seem to be right ;). My intent with this campaign is to illicit the nostalgic feelings of a classic dungeon crawl. Thinking back to my first taste of role-playing with the D&D Basic Game beginner box 10 years ago, I loved all the different encounters in the dungeon, from combat to puzzles, role-playing to skill challenges. I was enamored and hooked - I want to try something "simple" like that again, but with a bit more flare.

@IQuarent: I think the best option to get a handle on PbP would be to head over to the gameplay section and read some the running campaigns there.

Alt completed - a simple barbarian with a very practical approach.

Q: What is your motivation for helping the people of Vauntil?
A: Realistically, Iliya's motivation is much more "down to earth". First and foremost, he is looking for an oportunity to grow (in skill and strength) and this seems like a perfect challenge. After several months of simply wandering around with no real clue as to what to do, he beleives that he has finally found a worthy task. Of course, being (heftily) payed for it is just another plus.

Q: What was the last thing you did before falling asleep last night?
A: Had another (second) mug of dark ale in a local inn. He was planning on challenging a strong looking fellow to an arm-wrestle, but alcohol got the best of him and he simply passed out (he can not take alcohol).

Q: What is your (your character that is) goal in life?
A: Iliya is still very young, and did not see much of the world so far, so his goals are really simple - become a famous, strong warior, return to Hoarwood and marry Katya and live happily ever after. Maybe become a chief of his tribe in the process.

Q: What is your greatest fear?
A: That he will disappear in the world without making a mark. That his tribe will not remember him for his courageous deeds. That he will run away from a battle and that the people of his tribe will hear of it and mock him. That Katya will not acknowledge him as her equal (if not better than her).

I am at your disposal should you need additional information.

I think I'll roll and take my chances.

Alginon here. Crunch and backstory is located in my profile.

What is your motivation for helping the people of Vauntil?

I am looking for those who need assistance in fighting tyrrany. The good people of Vauntil cannot fight the threat to themselves and their homes, so I shall intervene on their behalf.

What was the last thing you did before falling asleep last night?

All of my gear is checked and stacked at the end of the bed for a quick grab if need be. I then fall asleep while writing in my journal, a half consumed glass of port wine on the bedside.

What is your (your character that is) goal in life?

Short term, I wish to help others in need. Long term, I am seeking my place in life, where I belong.

What is your greatest fear?

There are two. (1) Due to my punishments, I have a fear of drowning. and (2) that someday my father will return to resume those punishments with vigor.

I look forward to adventuring with you.

Crunch finished.

So far the submissions that I have are:

  • Henry Blackburne - Human Skirmisher Ranger
  • Izo Glignel - Gnome Summoner
  • Stephan Ferus - Catfolk Rogue
  • Iliya Gromovnik - Human Barbarian
  • Elorin Moonshade - Elven Paladin

Unfinished/Potential
  • GM Niles - Priest of Pharasma (Hopefully not the 3rd party priest class, 3rd party material is prohibited)
  • Mitleid - Archon Inquisitor
  • Wrong John Silver - Sorcer
  • Thrun - Skulking Slayer

I like what I'm seeing so far, keep it up.

Sczarni

  • What is your motivation for helping the people of Vauntil?

"Undead. Always undead. No matter where you look, the bastards are crawling out of crypts and mausoleums, trying to sup on the living-- or if their brain hasn't rotted out yet, they're trying to replace them and take what's 'rightfully theirs.' I don't care how important you were in life-- the dead die to make way for the living. That's how it is, and how it's going to be under my watch."

Blackburne hates the undead, hates their machinations and has been trained from a young age on how to end them. The people of Vauntil's plight is honestly secondary to the possibility of permanently ending a burgeoning undead threat.

  • What was the last thing you did before falling asleep last night?

"The nuns in the temple orphanage in Caliphas always said that the Lady of Graves rewards the faithful. And the faithful? They never missed a scripture reading. And neither did we, if we knew what was good for us. Now that I'm older, I have a special place for The Bones Land in a Spiral in my bag. Habit keeps me reading it-- I must have seen each page over a thousand times by now..."

Blackburne read the Bones, starting with the rites of birth and ending when he dozed off sometime in how to prepare a corpse for burial.

  • What is your (your character that is) goal in life?

"Nothing that matters now. Sometimes, I see the clergymen at sermon and feel jealousy that, despite my service and sacrifices to the Lady and her will, I do not have the respect and recognition they have. And sometimes, I hear the laughter of couples in the street, swinging their children, and feel envy. But I know that it's not my destiny, these things, at least-- not now."

To one day retire from hunting the damned and become a respected clergyman in a temple instructing boys like him on how to carry on his mission. To take a wife and have many children who have many children. To pass on before they do, to his reward at Pharasma's judgment.

  • What is your greatest fear?

"Fear is what you make of it. I'm prepared to die, monster. Are you?"

That nothing lies beyond the veil of death. That the bones only land in a spiral because of coincidence, not holy prophecy. That he will never live to see the day when he is allowed to put down his sword.

Also found an old Carrion Crown character - A Dr Van Helsing in the making Alchemist. He can fill healer, blaster and buffer roles. Are there any restrictions on traits that give money?

Are Archetypes a go or not? Chirurgeon/Cyrptbreaker below should be a great fit!

Here is Malthus

He can fill multiple roles as I said.

I am waiting on a ruling on money traits and also have a carrion crown trait.

I am going to take the 'Shaken' Drawback. Which is going to be RP rich but its going to MESS ME UP for the first few rounds of each combat with undead and throw me under a -2 to for everything unless I do well on a save. I am filled with hate but frankly? They terrify me.

Q: What is your motivation for helping the people of Vauntil?
A: Vengeance. Saving others from the horror I went through is good and right but I burn with a desire to kill the undead. To destroy them as they destroyed all I loved and make that which is unnaturally animate return to its natural state.

Q: What was the last thing you did before falling asleep last night?
A: Read. I enjoy my books. I am an ecletic reader and enjoy just about anything. When I read I recall happier, more carefree times (remembering a love of pursing knowledge purely for knowledges sake) and have a measure of peace and forgetfulness.

Q: What is your (your character that is) goal in life?
A: To die well. I say that I live to hunt the undead, that my life is empty but in my heart of hearts? I seek oblivion. Yet suicide is not part of my character and I hate the dead too much to surrender to death without bending every part of my being to taking them with me... and so, in all honesty, I must say that I seek to die but to die well, to die in such a way that I can say 'I died a good death' when I meet Pharasma.

Q: What is your greatest fear?
A: The undead themselves. I have studied them like I studied Alchemy. I can tell you so much about them, I can catalog them and break them into Family, Genus and Sub Genus or Species... but this does nothing in helping me overcoming my horror of something that is DEAD! yet still walks and in some cases, terrible cases thinks! How can this be and what can my intellect do compared to whatever fell force that animates and drives dead flesh and bone?

Roleplaying:
Walking through the misty rain that has recently started to fall, Stephan Ferus approaches the gate to Vauntil. His wide brimmed hat pulled low to keep the rain out of his eyes, Stephen spends the time approaching the gate perceiving not only the guards but also any holes in the road that he desires to avoid.
“ Greetings. My name is Stephan Ferus, and I have come to see the Governor.” Stephan’s step do not slow as he speaks, continuing to move past the guards and making his way to the town hall. Upon reaching his destination, he stands under the awning to brush off the water from his clothing, hat and fur before entering the building. Moving to stand before the governor, hat in hand and with a small sweeping bow, Stephan tells the man
“Governor Irkrile, I am Stephan Ferus, and I have come to help you in your time of need, if you would have me. “

GM Andrameda wrote:

His moneyed background is a large part of what enabled him to come to this point in his life and he's just recently sold his business to 'go pro' as a hunter of the undead.

That said, lets see what the gods provide as I have another concept within the make up of the character to work with.

3d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 4) = 10

Yeah :( Rich Parents.

Its not a matter of Min-Maxing but rather being 'properly' (for a given value of 'Proper') equiped for this character.

Placeholder for the aforementioned Bard... Mostly done. Needs some tweaks such as a feat and another trait and some formatting. Most importantly, a background.

He's going to be a larger than life Lord Flash like figure. Men want to be like him (well, thats what he tells himself) and Women want to be 'with him'. He's a glory hound and more than a little over confident.

He's also harder than a coffin nail. It may well be that his natural toughness may be enough to survive the results of this over confidence.

He sort of sooks and sulks and gets a little out of sorts when things don't work out his way or he doesn't feel properly respected.

Q: What is your motivation for helping the people of Vauntil?
A: The Glory! The Renown! The right to say 'I was there!' The wad of cash also helps

Q: What was the last thing you did before falling asleep last night?
A: Irene... At least I think that was her name...

Q: What is your (your character that is) goal in life?
A: To be one of the great warriors and figures spoken of in Saga and Song. My place is truly among the heros!

Q: What is your greatest fear?
A: To be mocked, to be scorned or to be laughed at. I am worthy of high honours and great respect. I am a warrior of a line warriors. Some gentle ribbing is one thing, the back and forth of shield brothers but more than that, it hurts because deep down, I suspect that they could be really thinking less of me.

Background: Nilan is of Varisian stock but is Ustalav born and bred. He grew up in Caliphas and attended the Church of Pharasma's temple as a child before dedicating himself to her causes. He is very uneasy with the current Bishop Bavhulameta Ulametria and her message of Pharasmin Penitence, which stresses that physical pain and suffering adds to rewards in the next life. To Nilan this smacks of Kuthonian teachings, but he doesn't speak negatively about the Bishop for she has great power. Instead Nilan travels the roads like his forbears, assisting midwives and blessing the old who are close to meeting the Lady. His burning passion however is the destruction of the undead that plague the countryside in Ustalav. When he read the flyer from nearby Vauntril he headed that way, knowing his services were required.

Appearance: Nilan is a tall and slender Pharasmin, he walks with a cane because of his frail body. Reflavored the cane into a club for crunch's sake He has short black hair and shaves infrequently, giving him a rough appearance.

Mechanics and Party info: Nilan will be a caster and will probably not be any kind of attacking powerhouse. He will use his domain powers to assist his party and channeling to keep them alive.

"I know what you're thinking. I'm a monster. I'm a twisted reminder of what that blackguard de Mon did to Vauntil all those years ago. And you're right, I am. I could have been a strapping young lad, but no, my mother insisted on twisting me into an abyssal mockery of human flesh. No, I hurt Vauntil with my presence, I make my hometown remember the atrocity they suffered. But this is still my home, and I will defend it with my last foul breath."

Q: What was the last thing you did before falling asleep last night?
A: Take care of my elderly father and made sure he was safe and comfortable in sleep.
"My mother, may demons torture her soul forever, was a foul follower of the Prince of Undeath, but my father is a good and holy man. Hallam the woodsman. He gave everything of himself to take care of his increasingly insane wife, and then, to raise me. He is the reason I know what it is to be human, what it means to have love in my heart. He showed me how to conquer the ravenous beast within me, and counseled me through my rages--of which there were many--with patience and kindness. He never abandoned me. And so... I can never abandon him in his old age."

Q: What is your (your character that is) goal in life?
A: To make Orcus and the demons pay for ever having let me be born.
"I should never have been born. My body should have rejected the demonic taint of death, and died in the womb. Certainly the pain and suffering I, my father, and all of Vauntil have suffered would have been avoided. But in that is my purpose. The gods have seen fit to let me live. They let me live to be here to fight and destroy that which spawned me. I am the cancer in the demonic plot, the gluttonous tumor on the machinations of the abyss. And when the Prince of Undeath finally succumbs, I shall die with him with a glad heart. I will finally know tranquility."

Q: What is your greatest fear?
A: That I will give in to my demonic nature and become a wretched monster.
"Because mark my words, I feel no harmony. My body, mind, and soul roil with the churning madness of darkness. I am constantly at war with myself to stem the tide of my foul, tainted nature. I know pain, fear, agony, hatred, decay. It is only with the careful guidance of my father Hallam that I also feel hope, love, gentleness, kindness. I cling to that guidance daily."

Money traits are fine. Just try to get some RP value out of it too, not just min-maxing ;)

Equipment list is done. You'll note that I haven't a single MW armour or weapon, just a lot of equipment appropriate for a doctor, alchemist and hunter of the undead. A lot of that equipment is very expensive.

It fits the life of privilege that he has come from and the equipment fits thematically while giving the party some deeper resources to draw on.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about the burst in power at the start because it evens out once you get better equipment and no longer benefit from a more permanent bonus.

Just a reminder, I will pick the group tomorrow evening. I'm located in eastern time, so I'll go ahead and say applications will close at 5pm eastern time. And have the group posted by around 6-7pm.

LOL - not much of a power burst with my choices. Heal kit is the only thing that gives me a +2 to any of my skills.

Q. What is your motivation for helping the people of Vauntil?
A. After having helped them with their problem, that the generous people of Vauntil will be willing to part with some of their well earned wealth for my sake.

Q. What was the last thing you did before falling asleep last night?
A. (Hopefully there is a local tavern nearby) To have done my job as a bouncer and thrown out some of the rougher crowd so that the other patrons could drink in peace.

Q. What is your (your character that is) goal in life?
A. To survive at any costs. While he is at it, making a fair amount of money and gaining power would be a fine plus.

Q. What is your greatest fear?
A. That I will be forced to live out my life as a farmer or craftsman. To be at the point in my life where I can no longer defend myself and make a living off of the skills I have trained in.

Recruitment is now closed. I will be looking at the applications and select them within the next couple of hours.
