No objections to that here *salutes*
PBP is an odd beast in many ways. It opens up a lot you can't do at a table, and as for myself as a GM I love that, but it in a sense also quadruples the GM's workload as you find yourself narrating response to four different players sometimes rather than the table as a whole (or five, or six, etc). Especially in a situation like the obstacle course where we may each be at different points trying different things. I find that my reach often exceeds my grasp with my own PBP GM-ing experiments, but it's a constant learning experience at any rate.
(I'm also certainly fine with the shirt-one-round thing if you're willing to grant that, but I wasn't trying to wrangle an expedited trap disarm, etc, just trying to make sure I wasn't depriving the group of my more direct aid for a significant time period.)
Tl;dr +1 to partial montage.

DM Doomed Hero |

Ariela, why don't you post your Round 14 action, and then I'll kick off the montage stuff with round 15.

DM Doomed Hero |

Somehow I missed that Ariela had posted her action. Weird.
Ok, lets kick off this montage thingy.
I want everyone to give me some short term goals (it can be more than one if you want). I'll do the rolling and move things forward to the point that I need a new goal from someone. At that point, anyone else's goals can be adjusted and I'll keep going.

Garridan Teskarova |

Ideally Garridan looks to get through the obstacle course methodically. He is in no rush to blow through the obstacles. If going slower gives him a better chance of success, then he will choose the slower option. Doesn't matter how fast you can clear the course, if you cannot get through the course lol.

DM Doomed Hero |

Unexpectedly busy yesterday and today. I should have time to push this forward tomorrow.
Action summary so far-
Garridan: get through the door
Eythil: lower the rope.
Talas: plug the hole, take the orb, head for the rope
Ariela: ??

DM Doomed Hero |

By my estimate, that first montage post was about 9 posts worth of actions, so we're already about caught up again based on how fast we've been moving. I like the way this feels. Hopefully I'll be able to rapidly outstrip our previous pace.

DM Doomed Hero |

I'd like intentions from all of you so I can push another montage forward again.
Talas, you've made the jump check, and exactly made the DC of the Balance check. You've used 15 feet of movement, but only actually moved 5 feet, so I'll call your Jump a 5' adjust. If you'd like to move more than that I'll need another Acro check to avoid AoOs.
The rest of you, how are you planning on proceeding?

Eythil Dreyer |

Figures I wouldn't make the jump check, although it's pretty difficult without the skill or some other way to change things.
For now, Eythil will have another near set of flashbacks while attempting to claw/dog-paddle his way through the water to the rope. I can't imagine what else he'd be trying to do.
Even without the Fighter Archetype, he's still got Endurance and Toughness as his feats along with his decently good physical Stats so he's not getting too tired despite nearly panicking every time he falls in the water.

Talas Arduinn |

If possible on this turn, I'll get down, since it sounds like I'll be getting potential smacks from clubs regardless of if I'm balancing like a lucky show-off or not, haha. Will go roll the Acro check in thread.

Ariela |

Ariela's ignoring the rest of the obstacle course until Eythil is out of the water. She'll do whatever she can to help, whether that means hauling on the rope once he's got a hold of it or pulling him up by hand.

DM Doomed Hero |

Does it look as if there's a way to go underneath the apparatus and "monkeybar" the platform?
No. It looks like the platform is made specifically to prevent that. The wood is sanded very smooth and the edges are rounded to prevent easy hand-holds.

DM Doomed Hero |

At this point there have been three of the glass orbs picked up. I'd like to know who's carrying them and how.
They are about the size of softballs. I had Talas stuff the one from the water down the back of his pants while he climbed but that isn't going to be a long term solution. They are glass and all of you are wet. Handling these things is a little tricky.

DM Doomed Hero |

Another crazy weekend that I'm still catching up from. I'll have an update up tomorrow.

Doomed Hero |

HI folks.
I'm in another rut. Personal life stuff is putting a big damper on my creative energy. I'm not going to shut this down, but I am going to say that I won't be updating for a while. I need to sort some things out.
Thanks for your patience.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

That's a good idea. I've been doing a lot of thinking about this game and come to some conclusions that were hard to face.
1) The original idea behind this (an interconnected series of games) has completely fallen apart.
2) The kinds of games I like to run in person flat out don't work in PbP. Skill challenges, dungeon crawls, and puzzles take way too long.
3) I like playing Pathfinder as a player, but I don't really like to run it as a GM. The system requires way too much rolling and bookkeeping.
So I'm going to close this down. It's been a lot of fun. Sorry I just couldn't make my ideas work the way I wanted them too.
I'll give a while for discussion if anyone wants to, and then make the game inactive.

For myself I'd suggest, if you've never considered it, looking into novels, potentially. I found there was a lot of really interesting worldbuilding and so forth and your NPCs were fun and had fun interactions with each other-- but sometimes the format of a mutually interactive game isn't the best place to showcase those skills. I'd probably like to read a novel set in the City of Arch more than I might like to play a game of it, per se (though as you say, some of that could be the PBP issue as opposed to tabletop).
Best of luck though.

Totally understandable, DH. For a game style that you are looking for, I cannot suggest Window RPG system enough for you! The rules are free for download online and (if I remember correctly) minimal die-rolling and extremely free form. The customization available would fit this idea quite well I think.
If you decide to give that route a go, please feel free to shoot me a PM. I've only played one Window game before and that was a few years ago, so I'd need a refresher, but I found it a nice change of pace.
