Greetings Brothers!
Techmarine Brother Valerio León reporting in as commanded.

It's unfortunate that I come in at number seven, but it is what it is.

I'll have a backstory up a bit later today.

Final background entry posted. Have fun with that stinger!

wow...so busy playing with background I totally forgot to roll for wounds. I R NOOBINS.

Wounds: 1d5 + 18 ⇒ (3) + 18 = 21

I never read the Rites of Battle book. So much fun stuff.

Dark Archive

In case I did not mention it, go full wounds. Should be 23. As far as a Black Shield Librarian goes, just take the powers normally granted what ever chapter you really are, and rename them. You have entered a grey area there, and cherry picking powers might prove a bit too much.

@Nimon: Understandable. I just didn't want to give out clues to my character's chapter by using their powers. But under a different name should work. I'll finalize his new profile by tonight.

That would be some hardcore metagaming bs if someone dropped your ex-Chapter by looking at the powers you're using. Why even bother?

I think he means if there was another psyker or librarian then they might be able in theory to chance a guess, but it would still be remote. Changing the name is something they suggest for the Attack and Defense stances, so that is where we are coming up with that, but yes it would go back to playing your character and not metagaming.

Are we going to be using Solo or Squad Mode more?

BTW here is my alias. Still a W.I.P. but does anyone see any errors so far?

Dark Archive

Solo and Squad mode is situational and depends on the players choice so long as they have the cohesion to do it.

@Eremiel: I just want to play very close to the black shield, and give no clues as to what my chapter is. I merely just attempted to get rid of any loose ends in any areas if they have a chance to be a giveaway. If I remember clearly I was talking to Nimon, not you. Your input was not required

1) There's no reason to be that rude.

2) "Why even bother"...going to those lengths to meta-game. It would be an obvious breach of game etiquette to do so.

What characters/specialties do we have at this stage? Do we have a tactical marine yet?

PhilOfCalth wrote:

2 Tactical Marines

1 Techmarine
1 Apothecary
1 Devastator
1 Librarian

Other character concepts have been submitted I believe, but I don't see any write-ups for them.

I guess that's assault marine for me then!

PhilOfCalth wrote:

Excellent choice, and a much appreciated addition as well.

Agreed!

@Eremiel: Doesn't matter.. You aren't the GM. I don't need to explain myself to you. I was talking to him and him only. Side conversation from you was not required to answer the question I had asked him.

I'm not attempting to be rude im just making a point that I do not need your input. I have already gotten my concern clarified, we do not need to continue this further

First off, I wasn't asking you to explain yourself. I was commenting on how dumb it would be to try to extrapolate your Chapter and how obvious it would be.

Second, follow the forum rules. You're being a jerk. Stop it.

I'm done with you.

Gotta agree with eremiel, you WERE a tad rude, whether you wanted or needed his thoughts which I also agree with his thoughts but also see your concerns and whatever you choose is fine by me.

In summary: his input was not required but nor were snark remarks about his input. (Do remember tone of voice and inflection is not carried through text, however much one wishes it to be so)

And I can understand you wanting to play that way, more power to you.

Keep in mind that this game is being hosted on an online PBP site where the GM may not be available to instantaneously respond to questions (due to either time zones, IRL responsibilities, or other restraints). As such it is both appropriate and beneficial for other players to answer questions and offer opinions when able, as it reduces the workload of the GM.

While I agree that Brother Eremiels opinion was not necessary, it was still valid. Renaming a psychic power will not prevent those who wish to use metagame knowledge to determine your characters origin chapter.

He was respectful, however, in not weighing in on the actual mechanical question (being able to use a psychic power from any chapter under a different name) and instead offered his viewpoint on the question from a metagaming aspect, something that is well within his capability to comment on.

Ultimately remember that this is a free forum in which the right to comment freely is observed. Idle conversation is likely to develop in recruitment threads such as this, especially when they are slow or cover a particularly interesting campaign. If you wish to speak to only one person or have a private conversation, use PMs. That goes for if you have a beef with another player. The whole of this discussion should have been solved via PM.

Alright. Can we please get back to the topic at hand? This petty agruement is getting us nowhere and I want to play Deathwatch. So Eremiel, whoever is at fault I would like to move past it. There was obviously some kind of miscommunication. I apologize on my part

And I apologize for getting angry and dismissive in my last post. Let's play the game (tomorrow lol)!

So I think I'll be going Hammer of Dorn Assault marine, using the rules in RoB. He should be a competitive, but not overly aggressive character.

Brother Theidus quick profile:

Demeanor: Competitive
Past: Chosen
Armour History: A Fury like Lightning (+5 Ag, +1 Iniative)

WS: 58
BS: 30
S: 50
T: 50
Ag: 55
Per: 50
Int: 45
Wp: 50
Fel: 35

Wounds: 23
FP: 5

Deeds: No Quarter Given

Additional Skills: Pilot(Personal)
Additional Talents: Counter Attack, Swift Attack, Rival(Ultramarines), Hatred(Word Bearers), Tactics(Assault Doctrine)

XP Spend: Deed-No Quarter Given: 500xp, WS +5, Ag +5

Background: Brother Theidus is know for his competitive nature, particularly in the realm of hand to hand combat. He constantly strives to improve himself by pitting himself against the strongest opponent, both in the practice cages and in the field of battle. Theidus sees himself as more that a simple weapon and will forgo testing himself during combat to better the tactical advantage of his battle brothers.

Having been chosen for and coming painfully close to winning the feast of blades Thedus was chosen to represent the chapter while being seconded to the Deathwatch

I hope it's OK that I don't make a profile before we start. I just have so many profiles from games that never started!

Let me know if there's anything I got wrong, need to change or need to add.

Okay it is weird going from Only War to Deathwatch then back again...

IIRC: We only get limitted Advances Options based on Chapter, Specialty/Advanced Specialty, and 2 General Over-Arching lists Correct?

Okay then I do have the right game in my mind right now.

EDIT: As for the Solo/Squad Mode I guess I should have pointed out that I was aiming that toward my fellow PCs. Trying to get a feel for which they would prefer.

I figure with two tac Marines group mode would be the preffered

Can't say I have much of a preference personally.

Depends on whether we are using the Tactical Expertise or Bolter Mastery.

After all we only get one of them. Would be nice to know which one isn't as much of a waste.

Make the character you want to make. Is he more of the tactician or the lone wolf? In the end those abilities, though nice, won't make or break the situation. All missions will have opportunities to utilize many different skills and tactics.

Hope you all had a good father's day. I start going through the characters with a fine-tooth comb tomorrow and will have the Mission Posted in the gameplay tab after I am completed. I will also open up the discussion tab at that point. If there is something you need to fix on your character I will address it in a PM.

Alright I just need to get my Skilled ironed out.

And the reason I was asking was that if we could get some guys willing to we might could eventually take advantage of Sword & Shield via my Tactical Expertise. Though I think of him more as a leader.

My main idea of him is a Romano-Celtic Centurion.

EDIT: Oh and I forgot to spend the other 600XP... Crap...

Okay I feel Stupid... How do the skills work exactly? It has been quite a bit since I had to use Skills in this game.

"The most common type of test a Battle-Brother performs

during the game is the Skill Test. Each Skill is governed by
a Characteristic. For example, the Dodge Skill is governed
by the Agility Characteristic. To make a Skill Test, add any
relevant modifiers to the Skill’s governing Characteristic, then
make a percentage roll. If the result is equal to or less than
the modified Characteristic, the test succeeds. If the result is
greater than the modified Characteristic, the test fails."

More detailed information is available on page 202 of the Deathwatch Corebook.

Sorry for the chain of posts. Sadly we can't edit posts older than an hour.

I have him done save for his full background and some minor stuff for quick reference. That is things like Talent Descriptions and Weapon Stats.

Oh and of course he will add stuff based on Requisition and everything.

He has 100XP carrying over into Play. Hope that is okay as I can't find anything available to him for 100XP...

EDIT: I figure it out. Apparently I am just blind... Or need new glasses.

Though I take it if it is Ranked as Basic we only get half the Characteristic before Bonuses/Penalties get added? If so I might eventually go ahead and add the base numbers to my Skills Section.

Basic skills may be attempted by any character regardless if they are trained in them or not.

If your character IS trained in a basic skill you make the test as normal with no penalties.

If your character IS NOT trained in a basic skill then you may still make a test of that skill, but do so at half of your usual proficiency (rounded down).

Okay so I had it right. Thank the Emperor that I took Dodge.

Brother Gaius wrote:

Now it is my turn to be confused. All Space Marines begin play with Dodge trained don't they? Why would it be necessary to purchase the base skill again?

Unless, of course, you sprung for Dodge +5. Though I don't believe that to be the case.

They start with it at Basic. At least on the Sheet in the back. Though the list on Page 36 does confuse matters...

GM would you like to weigh in?

If I can spend those XP elsewhere I would be glad to do so. Maybe pick up Double Team and something else.

And man I would love to use a Chain Sword with the Flesh Render Ability. As that would fit his blood lust perfectly...

EDIT: Also are we going to be using Unlimited Basic Ammo or are we gonna have limited supplies to track?

EDIT@Lutha: We don't get access to Dodge +10 until Rank 5 under the General Advances Table.

Community consensus seems to be that SM begin play with Dodge trained, though a lack of an official FAQ or update on the part of the Designers means that ultimately the decision is left to the GM.

Source for those interested

Brother Gaius wrote:

I'm aware, though I didn't want to exclude the possibility that you had spent your XP on Dodge +10 in some way that I had not read.

From my understanding we don't have access to the Sourcebook that adds it in earlier. Nor would I take the Scout Specialty to gain it.

Also don't we start with Intimidate Trained as well?

Brother Gaius wrote:

According to the text on pg 36, yes.

Dark Archive

You start with dodge trained and intimidate. I must have a newer addition because the discrepancies between pg 36 and the character sheet are not an issue, they reflect the same for me.

You do not have to track ammo , but you do have to track how many shots you have made for purposes of having to reload.

My book says the same as Nimon's.

Space marines start with a lot of really useful skills. It's a big jump from the power level associated with OW. I was wandering through the book and had a little panic attack because I couldn't find the parry skill. Apparently it's not a skill in DW. Everyone can parry, no-one can improve it.

I want to go power-axe and shield eventually.

It seems I have access to a copy before the Minor Errata was included.

I think the Parry being a basic innate thing represents Marines training in CQC a lot more than guardsmen. Though it might have to do with the fact that apparently every Rulebook but OW will be getting a 2nd Edition coming up. Apparently Dark Heresy already has one.

And I should have the Dodge, Intimidate, and my redone advances up by tonight. Maybe around 16:00 or 18:00. And what are Elite Advances? My IRL group references them but I can't find them in the books and my Reader doesn't have a working find bar... (It doesn't take input correctly.)

Edit: It seems Parry was made a skill alongside Climb and Swim being made into Athletics since Black Crusade was made. So after this game was released they streamlined the skills a bit.

Also just to get some minor discussion on a topic I thought of during the build process and the one for my IRLs Only War Campaign. What Character Sheet do you like the best out of the ones you have seen?

Mine is a tie between: Only Wars for its simplicity, Rogue Trader & Dark Heresy I like the overall layouts and cleanliness of. The Deathwatch Sheet seems cluttered and with little space for player use. Kinda like most Pathfinder Sheets out there.

Elite advances are things the GM designs for you to spend XP on beyond what the rules say you can, generally as a reward for something you did in game.

My best example is giving one of my players access to the ability to decieve using Int over Fellowship when he made a paticuarly funny quip when the bad guy asked why the PCs where chasing him in a DH 2 game (I was in the Beta)

Space marines have a lot more abilities that need to be put on the same place. Including the rules for their implants and power armour. Just a point.

I really haven't got a favorate character sheet...

Thanks that makes sense now. Seems like that might make things interesting.

For the side discussion: I get that but there is a lot of wasted space on the sheet that a simple placement change could take advantage of.

I make most of my characters here, so it's rare that I actually have to interact with character sheets. Even for my old, now finished, Skype game, everyone just typed into notepad.
