Interested so far, recapping:
vanaran monk - Stratos
oread fighter (brawler) - Lucent
(race unknown) paladin - Gilthanis
human bard (dervish dancer) - Mark Thomas 66
human monk (MoMS)/fighter (lore warden) - Doomed Hero
human rogue (rake)/fighter (brawler) - Ptolmaeus Arvenus
human rogue (scout/poisoner)/Red Mantis assassin - Nimon
(race unknown) wizard/rogue (trapsmith) - Black Thom
dwarf monk (iron mountain) - Javell DeLeon
(race unknown) arcane trickster - Zenergy
human sorcerer (wildblooded sylvan) - Dreaming WarforgedAlso, Stalwart hasn't posted a character idea yet.
Sill no healer so far, only one dedicated arcanist, and a couple of traps/skills types. Is there something about Jalmeray that makes everyone want to play monks and/or unarmed fighters?
And Nesipho Inkosi - Human Magus/Rogue - cause you know, not enough rogues have applied yet :)

Fair enough. I wasn't planning on using a buckler anyway, but it's still nice to know what the house rules are before you join.
Would the same thing apply to a Ring of Force Shield?
Since a ring of force shield is wielded "as if it were a heavy shield," you can't wield it on a hand wielding another weapon and the hand is definitely not considered empty. On the other hand, you can make a shield bash with it (even one that would hit incorporeal targets...).

Ok, so templates are just a very carefully approved thing, then. Here's the twist: the template I was thinking of using reduces the character's power: the 'simple creature: young' template.
That's right: I'm mulling over the idea of playing a kid. Haven't got much further than that, and I haven't read up enough on the setting to have a lot of inspiration, but if anyone's interested in collaborating, better speak up before it solidifies as a character (or the GM vetoes it.)

I meant that, since it's able to be activated and deactivated as a free action, could you turn it off and on as needed during your turn?
Say you wanted to move, which might provoke AoOs, so you turn it on. Then you get to your target and want to attack, so you turn it off. Now your hand is free.
At the end of your turn, you'd just choose to leave it off (if you thought you might get AoOs and wanted to maximize your damage potential with Dervish Dance), or leave it on (if you didn't think you were going to need Dervish Dance while it wasn't your action and wanted the AC boost).
Doesn't work quite as well for Crane Style, since you always need the offhand open when it isn't your turn, but seems like a nice fit for Dervish Dance.
(all this stuff is why I hate Dervish Dance as a feat and just go with Agile weapons when I make a Dex Melee build)

The young template is one I would allow, but I would probably not give you a level bump in response. If you want to play an 8th level character with the young template, you're fine, but don't expect to get to play a 9th level character with it in this game. Fair?

Variel Tessara
http://www.dndsheets.net/view.php?id=48546
Variel's life can be surmised by his life in Absalom, the adventurous and curious young elf growing up on its very streets. All he can remember of family were a few rag tag thieves who looked after one another when they could, coming and leaving to the outside world when they had the coin to give the guards the slip. But one old man had stayed there all his life, his reputation as a local fence making him a thief's best friend: Calendrel "Silverthumb," the man who lost his thumb after a gate he had been escaping out of dropped on it. He was also the man who raised young Variel.
Despite their shady business and interactions with unsavory folk, Calen taught Variel how to pickpocket, break open doors/chests, and other mischievous forms of larceny. Calen would be the looks and charm, and Variel was the scoundrel whose fingers got well acquainted with a hind end's purse. Calen always loved to say, "We steal from the rich and give to the poor; I'm poor and they're rich!"
Variel grew fascinated in the arcane arts after swiping a young apprentice's scrolls from him. The beautiful calligraphy, the feel of the paper in his fingers, and the power...his mind bloomed, and his heart pounded at all the possible applications he could put to use with magic. Locks could be opened without effort, tall buildings could be scaled with the flick of a wand, and the power.
After relieving several libraries of their books, Variel's secret passion eventually led him to a group of adventurers looking to explore the open seas. Unable to say goodbye to Calen, Variel left a farewell note and took off on the high seas with the party, making more than a few wizards uncomfortable when he peered over their shoulders. Faces changed, people joined, and people left until finally they disbanded.
Variel now heads towards Niswan upon the Fare Winds for no rhyme or reason. He sits alone with his thoughts, unsure of his goals and even more uncertain of what was to come.
Sorry I don't have a more in depth look into his adventuring days or personal goals, this is just how he came out in my mind. I'm way more interested with in game development.

Ooh, new rules for new character types. Gonna keep an eye out for that.
As for the "9th level" thing, no worries. I wasn't planning to get an extra level out of it. If anything, I it actually occurred to me that the young template might balance out one of the +1 templates. problem is finding something that can lead to a suitable character. I seem to be running low on inspiration lately...Just can't seem to think up something that feels like a good blend of traits, unique birth, and youth that seems like it would work. Maybe I've bitten off more than I can chew with this idea.

Dreaming Warforged here. I can't say that she's truly done (especially spells known and equipment), but close enough.
I didn't tear apart her character sheet, but I did notice two things about Ashaka. First, I recommend strongly against making the bane amulet just demon-bane; something more like evil outsider bane is likely to be more useful just in general, and particularly in this adventure. Second, as he (?) stands now, Ashaka won't actually attack demons anyway - you need to spend a second trick on teaching it to attack any enemies, otherwise it will only go after humanoids, monstrous humanoids, or animals.

I did say it wasn't finished :) That amulet will not stay. No worries. Thanks for the point on the trick. I hadn't thought of that.
As for RPing in a recruitment thread, I'm no big fan. It gets confusing quite fast!
DM Shisumo
One last recap before I close the recruitment tomorrow:
vanaran monk - Stratos
oread fighter (brawler) - Lucent
(race unknown) paladin - Gilthanis
human monk (MoMS)/fighter (lore warden) - Doomed Hero
human rogue (rake)/fighter (brawler) - Ptolmaeus Arvenus
half-elf ranger/cleric/holy vindicator - Nimon
dwarf monk (iron mountain) - Javell DeLeon
elf arcane trickster - Zenergy
human sorcerer (wildblooded sylvan) - Dreaming Warforged
human magus/rogue - bbangerter
Also, Stalwart still hasn't posted a character idea yet, and Daynen is trying to nail something down.
I gotta say, so far the choice is looking pretty tough. Lots of cool ideas here, and a bunch of interesting potential interactions between them.
Nesipho Inkosi
Added some additional details to Nesipho's backstory - pasted here again with the new details (at the end) bolded for easy reference.
A few years after his rite of passage into manhood he left the jungles to explore the world beyond the expanse. This caused some slight contention within his family. His parents did not want him to leave the tribe or his homeland. It was there that he came under the tutelage of Adian Veray and learned he had a natural capacity for the arcane arts. A friend of Adian's, Logan Drais, taught him in the use of blades. Under their guidance he learned the art of weaving steel and magic as a magus. While he now favors the rapier as it seems a natural extension of his agile limbs he continues to carry the traditional weapon of his tribe, a short throwing spear.
Meeting the different peoples of the outside world developed in him an intense interest in both languages and cultures. This growing interest fueled his curiosity regarding the many ruins of then Mwangi Expanse. He returned to his homeland for a short time in association with the pathfinder society and spent several months on an expedition into the drowning stones. He was joined there by his brother Ojore, a tribal druid of his people, and several others of the society. The expedition ultimately met a tragic end. While ahead exploring a collapse in the tunnels separate him from the group just as a horde of ulat-kinai (skum) attacked the group. Nesipho managed to find a different way out of the drowning stones and spent a month searching for his brother to no avail. It is believed all other members of the group fell to the skum.
Feeling a heavy weight at the loss of his brother he once again left the expanse to explore the world beyond. He took passage upon Fare Winds to distance himself from his recent past and to again persue his interest in other cultures - he is particularly interested in seeing the Festival of Colors in Niswan.
He also hopes to learn the Vudrani tongue while there and get a chance to study in some of their libraries about the islands past history - having heard bits and pieces of its history regarding the alternating rule of the Vudrani and the Arclords.
Good luck to everyone who has applied.

It's a mix of indoor and outdoor environments - there's one fairly sizable dungeon, but there's also a few places where a mount should be able to go pretty easily. A Small-sized character will make it easier; I suspect a halfling paladin on a riding dog would probably be able to participate in most of the encounters without serious difficulty.
Markis Alvento
Stalwart here.
Finally back! Sorry for the delay, everyone.
This is Markis, Oracle of the Outer Rifts (not by choice). He's a bit touched, and what's worse, anything he touches, he breaks. So he'll be trying to stay out of everyone's way, but if something needs destroyed, he's got the knack for it. He's traveling to Niswan in order to visit some of the temples and monasteries, to develop better control over his abilities. I plan on playing it as though he is afraid of them himself, not trusting where they came from.
He's got lots of healing, but he is primarily a de-buffer, and has some nifty battlefield control tricks.
DM Shisumo
Well, I was delaying a bit to see what Gilthanis might come up with, but we're well past the deadline, so I'm just gonna call it. I'd like to offer spots in the game to the following players/characters:
Stalwart - Markis Alvento
bbangerter - Nesipho Inkosi
Nimon - Xelra Fon
Dreaming Warforged - Tania Teg
Lucent - Jamnivar Volgaunt
If anyone is not still interested, please let me know ASAP; I will be putting up a discussion thread in a few minutes, where we can hash out character builds and the like. Thank you all very much for applying!
