Redtooth waited politely while Chotka and Rikal spoke Orc.
"I respect your desire to speak privately, but you should know that I speak Orcish." said smoothly. There are other ways to make yourself known as well. "You could kill the manticore. Roughest thing around that's not part of a game, except the crazy priestess and she mostly keeps to herself. Destroying the big dish, if you can get past the Thralls to do it, would get noticed too. Might be even worth it if you can do something about the haunted canyon."
Enjoy your murder sandbox. :)
Rikal Elkhorn |
Murder sandbox? Oh goody!
Rikal looks at the ratfolk, then smiles and nods in acknowledgement. "Forgive our rudeness. It sounds like there is much that we could do to gain notice. We shall consider our options. Do you know of a fortified area in which we could make camp?"
Spidre |
Spidre nods to Redtooth with a light grin at the acknowledgement.
"Fortified? I'd rather a secret area." She responds to Rikal's question.
"I think we should break this 'dish', if that's what was taking Torch's fire. Aside from that, the Steel Hawks could be important allies if we can eliminate this 'Birdfood'." Spidre says, considering a moment. "Where is this manticore?"

"You're welcome here if you don't mind rats," Redtooth said. "Not us. The regular kind and the big kind. As long as you fight with us if we come under attack. Or if you want less company, the crazy priestess has some kind of temple."
"I think we should break this 'dish', if that's what was taking Torch's fire. Aside from that, the Steel Hawks could be important allies if we can eliminate this 'Birdfood'." Spidre says, considering a moment. "Where is this manticore?"
"I'll draw you a map..." Redtooth delivered in short order, making scratches on a piece of rough hide. And it's your battlemap for the present.
Rikal Elkhorn |
Rikal nods. "This should be no problem - although I imagine the ceilings may be a little low for us."
I'm agreed to staying here, and probably taking down the dish. I'd like to eliminate Birdfood and the Smilers while we're at it, too.
Spidre |
If we still had Groo I'd say let him get an audience and then kill him bare-handed while we make havoc outside to block reinforcements.
But we don't have Groo, so we'll have to think about this a little.
Anyway, birdfood or dish first?
Chotka, Last of the Blackeyes |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Naked and armed! More seriously...
Chotka led the group back toward's Birdfood's building. When they were about one minute away and not in direct sight of it, Chotka paused and cast bless on the group before continuing on.
Upon reaching the entrance, the orc called out to the guards, "Go get Birdfood. We changed our minds and want to give him our weapons."
Rikal Elkhorn |
Chotka has Bless as a spell known. I will stop preparing it, then.
When they pause, at the same time Chotka casts Bless, Rikal casts heroism on Chotka.

Surprise!
The guards, all orcs, watched Chotka and the Sworn Band approach warily but relayed his message. In a few moments, Birdfood emerged.
"Ready to talk now?" the man said, calling out from a healthy distance away and surrounded by orcs and three large hawks. "Drop the arms just there and come on forward." Neither he nor the Steel Hawks seemed to have any inkling of what the Sworn Band intended.
Soon they would learn.

Karek Redhand |
"You wanted our weapons Birdshit?" Karek says happily. "Here's one." He throws a bomb at the smiler.

Surprise Round
Rikal casts a spell, attempting to freeze Birdfood where he is.
Casting Hold Person on Birdfood. DC 16 Will save or he's immobilized and helpless for 4 rounds. He gets an additional saving throw on his turn as a full-round action. How many Orcs are there?
Spidre |
Spidre conjures a swirl of sparkling sand between her hands and tosses it into the air. It flies forth and bursts into brilliant motes around their enemies.
Glitterdust, 10ft radius, Will DC 15 or blinded, 4 rounds, new save at end of turn, targeting as many as possible
She then draws her bow and prepares to engage at range.
Raven follows Chotka, wielding his polearm defensively.
Not sure what Chotka will do, but if he hangs back Raven will stand next to him and ready an attack. If he charges forward, Raven will charge forward with him and attack with his polearm directly.
Bardiche: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 1 = 15, Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Chotka, Last of the Blackeyes |
Is Birdfood in charge range? If so....
Greataxe: 1d20 + 11 - 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 11 - 2 + 2 + 2 = 14, Damage: 1d12 + 9 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 6 = 19 +1d6 ⇒ 4 lightning damage
AC is 13 this round due to charging.
Samnell |
There are eight orcs in total.
It is to my deep regret that I must report Birdfood, while technically within charge range, isn't really charge legal because Chotka would have to negotiate some obstacles. There's a railing he'd need to jump and such. Bummer.

Surprise!
"You wanted our weapons Birdshit?" Karek says happily. "Here's one." He throws a bomb at the smiler. It caught the man square in the chest, wreathing him briefly in flames that also seared his hawks and one orc. Karek then reached for his mutagen.
Spidre conjures a swirl of sparkling sand between her hands and tosses it into the air. It flies forth and bursts into brilliant motes around their enemies. One orc and one of Birdfood's birds were blinded. Meanwhile, Raven stood ready next to Chotka.
Rikal casts a spell, attempting to freeze Birdfood where he is. He felt his power start to clutch Birdfood, but the disfigured man thrust it aside with an exertion of slippery will.
"Birdfood, you are a fool to think you can claim our weapons without proving your strength. Come, fight!" Chotka shouted before slapping his chest and caused a rippling shield of force to appear before him.
Surprise ends here.
"I'll show you the fool!" Birdfood said. [b]"Take him!" he cried as he took a hasty step clear of Spidre's magic. Still limned with its sparks, he made a strange sound that felt more machine than man and his bowstring glowed.
Ref DC 14 vs splash

"There is no fortune to be found for you, Birdfood. I foresee bad luck in your future."
Misfortune Hex on Birdfood, DC 16 Will or he has to roll 2d20 for every roll for 1 round.
Rikal then begins a primal chant. Chant as a move action to extend misfortune hex for 1 round, if it takes.
Spidre |
Spidre begins targeting the closest enemies in an effort to thin the opposing group.
+1 to attack/damage if within 30ft
+1 Comp Longbow 1: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 10 - 2 = 15, Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
+1 Comp Longbow 2: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 10 - 2 = 14, Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Raven takes a step forward and maintains his defensive stance.
5ft step up to give the squishies some space, then readied attack vs first one in range.
Bardiche: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23, Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
EDIT: or move in with Chotka if he does so
Chotka, Last of the Blackeyes |
In that case, no rage just yet.
Chotka led the attack, running forward, clambering up the railing then leaping down closer to Birdfood.
I'm not quite clear on the situation. If I can reach Birdfood in a single move, Chotka would prefer to attack with his axe, otherwise, we'll see how Birdfood feels about magic missiles.
Greataxe: 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 9 - 2 + 2 = 23, Damage: 1d12 + 6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 6 = 15

Chotka was 60 feet distant from Birdfood. The map squares still count the same. Just the image I had was not big enough to give you the distance. :) I moved him up so now he's 30 distant.
I numbered the foes with multiples because I did not know previously that I could. Also sorry for missing last night. My Roll20 Runelords game ended with the GM asking me and another PC to tone our characters down or replace them, which was reasonable but also super distracting.

Round 1
Karek quaffs his mutagen with delight, groaning as his form distorted, growing a muzzle and fangs to go with his claws.
Spidre begins targeting the closest enemies in an effort to thin the opposing group. Her arrows found the throats of the two orcs flanking the steps. Raven takes a step forward and maintains his defensive stance.
"There is no fortune to be found for you, Birdfood. I foresee bad luck in your future." Rikal then begins a primal chant as he felt his curse settle upon the Smiler.
Chotka led the attack, running forward, clambering up the railing then leaping down closer to Birdfood and hurling magic at him. Raven followed.
The orcs roared and came rushing forward, one poised to cut a deep gash across Chotka's chest until Raven cut him down. Two hung back and hurled javelins that came to the ground well clear of the war leader.
Birdfood's hawks, the ones that can see anyway, descend upon Rikal. One tears a gash in his shoulder as he bats the other back. The Smiler himself trained his bow on Chotka and fired two arrows, both twisted by strands of fate and turned away from the war leader's hide.
Will DC 16: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 well damn
So orcs. Two are dead, which is a good start. 1 charges Chotka.
Falchion: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 5 + 2 = 26
Damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (3, 4) + 4 = 11
That provokes Raven, who hits and kills. So that damage never happens.
Another
Falchion: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 5 + 2 = 20 miss
Damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1) + 4 = 8
Standard move & attack

Damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (4, 2) + 4 = 10
Javelin: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 1 - 4 = 12
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Javelin: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 1 - 4 = -2
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
And now it's three birds, one of which is blind and does total defense. The others run for Rikal.
Rikal
Talon: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 4 + 1 = 24
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Talon: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 1 = 6

Now Birdfood. He shoots Chotka
Birdfood1: 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 10 + 1 = 24
Birdfood1: 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 10 + 1 = 18

Order is Birdfood, Karek, Spidre, Rikal, Chotka, Orcs. The party is up!
Spidre |
Spidre's arrows having found their mark, she switches targets to the hawks attacking Rikal. Who needs to update his HP, I think
She looses another pair of arrows towards the attackers.
+1 Comp Longbow: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 10 - 2 = 25, Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

+1/+1 for PBS if within 30ft
Raven maintained his defensive posture near the warleader, prepared to cut down the next attacker just as he'd done with the first.
Prepared attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9, Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Rikal Elkhorn |
I'll get there. I'm going to put a current tally in my posts, and update the stat line later.
With the two hawks flying around him, Rikal finds himself in an awkward situation. Focusing, he attempts to cast a spell.
Defensive casting, flame blade, DC 19: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
A blade of fire appears in his hand to strike at the birds.
Free touch attack from casting a touch spell: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 4 + 1 = 22
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
I didn't see anything labeled on the map, so we'll assume that hits the most wounded bird.
Rikal then continued his primal chant, prolonging Birdfood's bad luck.
Using Chant as a move action to extend the duration of the Misfortune hex one round.
Chotka, Last of the Blackeyes |
Am I missing something? The only map I see is the big overview of the whole area. No enemy/player markers or anything. Since I can't see the map, please interpret this as you will. Chotka's primary goal is to get to Birdfood and chop him in half, but he'll cut his way through any that stop him if he is absolutely forced to do so.
Chotka continued his advance and let loose a furious howl as he attacked with lightning arcing from his axe.
Raging time! The last 1d6 damage is electricity if it matters.
Greataxe: 1d20 + 11 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 11 - 2 + 2 = 31, Damage: 1d12 + 9 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (10) + 9 + 6 + (4) = 29
Crit Confirm?: 1d20 + 11 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 11 - 2 + 2 = 28, Extra Damage: 2d12 + 18 + 12 ⇒ (2, 6) + 18 + 12 = 38
Let's see how Birdfood is doing after 67 damage?

Round 2
Karek howls and lunges at Birdfood, slashing with a clawed hand. Blood flies as his claws rend the mutilated man.
With the two hawks flying around him, Rikal finds himself in an awkward situation. Focusing, he attempts to cast a spell. A blade of fire appears in his hand to strike at the birds. Rikal then continued his primal chant, prolonging Birdfood's bad luck.
Spidre's arrows having found their mark, she switches targets to the hawks attacking Rikal. She looses another pair of arrows towards the attackers. Feathered thrice over, the hawk she aimed for was nearly slain Raven maintained his defensive posture near the warleader, cutting down a second orc that beset Chotka and clearing the way for his wild charge.
Chotka continued his advance and let loose a furious howl as he attacked with lightning arcing from his axe. He cut Birdfood in twain, lightning searing flesh as it fell in both directions away from the blade.
Birdfood's hawks laughed into a frenzied storm of attacks, but proved little more obstacle. The surviving orcs fled.
Rikal Elkhorn |
Rikal pulled out the wand and used it to heal himself of the gash he had taken.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
He then says, "With Birdfood dead, we should find their new leader and tell her the good news."
Spidre |
"I feel like someone should stay here and help handle the fallout. Changes in leadership can be messy." But admittedly that's not a very Hyborian thing to do
Spidre remarked with a look of concern. But even as she did so, her hands were digging into the pockets of the fallen.
"Raven, keep the war leader safe. Let him deliver the news."
Chotka, Last of the Blackeyes |
Works for me.
With no more guards standing watch, Chotka strode past the toppling pile of bird food into the domain of the Steel Hawks and demanded the attention of the first person he found inside. "You. Birdfood is dead. I will speak to the person in charge now."
Also, finally, not just a crit, but a satisfying and well-timed crit!
Rikal Elkhorn |
Rikal strode in behind the Warleader, flame blade still in hand. "Sevroth Slaid would also be acceptable."
Spidre |
Spidre takes the bow of the fallen Birdfood as evidence of his slaying to back up the Warleader's words.
I'll assist in whatever social check may be required. Assuming I can T10 I can auto-assist on anything.
Samnell |
Karek is getting over his transformation and wanders after the others a little forlornly. Everything looks so faded and dull when he's just normal.
Chotka strode into the small complex and found little more than a looted armory, a throne room with a throne of lopsided junk, a barracks, an empty cage, and a metal box. The only audience for the Warleader and Rikal's demands was a pair of orcs who were fast asleep in the barracks.
The orcs cowered before the sworn band's might, after being properly roused by kicks, and shouted back that Birdfood was in charge before quire processing what they'd been told.
"If he's dead, then Slaid's chief again. Unless you are."
