As a young man, Chotka began his training as his tribe's next shaman. He was an obvious choice, because Gorum had decided on the day of selection, that only he was a worthy apprentice. Chotka endured numerous trials of pain and fortitude, learned to read fortunes in the guts of spilled enemies and eventually attained his first scar tattoos of a shaman initiate.
As a shaman initiate, he served his tribe by accompanying scouting parties and stitched their wounds closed when he was able, or ensured they died with an axe in their hand if they were beyond his care. In time, the old shaman died, and Chotka assumed his proper role in his tribe. During the years that followed, Chotka urged the chieftain to attempt less openly violent relations with neighboring orc and human clans, arguing that the fewer orcs that were lost to meaningless battles, the more would be available to one day conquer the whole region, and build a truly powerful tribe. One day, while he was accompanying a small envoy patrolling the region, they found a strange metal dome embedded in the ground. As the orcs were investigating it, large holes split open from the surface, and a dozen metal men burst forth from the openings just before they closed again. The battle was quick and gruesome, with nearly all of the thirty orcs being skewered, electrocuted or shredded by the horribly strange arms of the creatures. With 4 of the metal men still standing, and almost all of his brothers and sisters dead or dying, Chotka charged forward, snarling vicious curses. His great axe cleaved through a damaged one and brought it down, but he was still outnumbered. Two of the remaining automatons moved to engage him, while the third moved slowly across the battlefield, firing a bright beam through the skulls of each of his fallen men. The metal men never spoke, but they coordinated like trained soldiers. The first fended off Chotka's attack, while the other circled around. Knowing he would soon be caught between them, Chotka charged forward hoping to escape the rapidly closing vice. He managed to bury his axe deep in the chest of the creature before him, but at a cost. Its friend managed to grab hold of his leg with one large 3 fingered hand, while the other arm's circular blade burrowed into his exposed thigh. As Chotka was driven to the ground, he managed to grab hold of the bladed arm, and overpower his enemy, heaving it out of his leg and through the metal man's midsection. Bleeding profusely, Chotka stumbled to his feet once more, his axe lost among the debris around him. He limped forward, desperate to stop the last one, before all of his people were slain. Wounded and weaponless, Chotka lurched the last few feet and attacked with the only thing he had left; his bare teeth sank into strange cables in what could only be the creatures neck, spewing a foul fluid into across Chotka's face. When he awoke, several days later, it was to the wonderment of the people of his tribe. The children whispered of Chotka, Destroyer of Metal Men, Black-eyes of Gorum. A few of the men from Chotka's group had managed to watch Chotka's last moments of battle, and drag his seemingly lifeless corpse home, only to find Chotka begin to breathe once more, hours later, and that his eyes had turned completely black. The story of a shaman touched by Gorum spread quickly, and drew many more orcs to Chotka's tribe, now known as the Black Eyes. Finally strong enough to found a new life for themselves, Chotka worked with Ulfar Burnhands to broker an agreement for peaceful trade with Torch. While Chotka was busy discussing the finer points of their agreements, his people were beginning to dig the foundations for their new home nearby. Filled with pride at his people's accomplishments, Chotka left Torch to see how his people had progressed in his absence. Upon his return, however, he found nothing but death and pain. His tribe of thousands lie dead, with metal men crawling through the ashes of his hopes, like vermin in a woman's hair. While he was considering his options, a great blast shook the ground, and a massive mechanical scorpion crawled out of the crest of a nearby hill. Knowing he was surely outmatched, and nothing to gain from death that day, Chotka turned back to Torch, to warn his new allies, and stand vigil, ready to stand and die in battle with the humans when the machines come again. |
