Rise of the Runelords AP

Game Master Varrian Lunari

The town of Sandpoint needs you!

I actually think just core is a little restrictive. IMHO, Core + APG is a great combination.

But, if core is what it takes to play RotRL then so be it :p

Varrian Lunari,

I'm sorry to be coming in on like post forty or fifty, but I absolutely want to be able to participate in a RotRL campaign, I have slight experience (less than the first encounter), but not really that much.

My character is fully made and listed under this Alias, I think he complies with all rules. I will be going back over his character with a fine tooth comb to see if he completely fits.

Please consider this character for your campaign if it is not too late.

No worries. The submission deadline is not until the 28th at 6pm est. You have time! Welcome to the recruitment thread!

Let me put down a little of my character's personality and style, so you can know who/what he is.

Anaach is a barbarian warrior, but he is neither a fool, nor a monster. His rage is carefully controlled. He is no scholar, but he knows his own strength lies in his ability to use his intelligence in situations where others from his tribe would attack wildly. His face has been branded with the mark of the fallen warrior because of his defeat at the hands of a Varisian, and because of this he has been exiled, living amongst civilization as a bodyguard, he knows that keeping his temper is more important than knowing when to lose it. While many people underestimate him, he surprises those who think they know what a tribesman will do in situations.

When in battle, Anaach is a fearsome sight to behold, using the weapons of his tribe, the spear and axe. If his opponent has a shield he will hurl the spear, aiming for the top or center of the defensive item, trying to make the spear dig into the material. Then he will attempt to charge them with his massive ax, swinging the monstrous weapon with deadly ease, and either trying to destroy what is left of the article, or wounding its wielder. Anaach would prefer not to kill, but he will not falter should his opponent refuse to yield or is undeserving of mercy.

After viewing a couple other successful threads for recruitment I want to let everyone know the following:

1. I will be opening a discussion thread in the next day or so that will be in Sandpoint at the very beginning of the Swallowtail Festival. It is going to be an open RP for all of the applicants to interact so I can get a feel for your individual rp styles.

2. The submission date and time will stay the same. Those that make it will then be led into the gameplay thread and I will (if possible because I have not tried it yet) open a discussion thread for the group. Those who do not make it will be allowed to leave by rp'ing if they wish. Players may leave and following the post could prove to open up some opportunities.

3. Any questions for me thus far?

I'm interesting in making a monk; I've had my eye on one for awhile, but could never quite find the spot for it. Varrian, what are your thoughts on having said monk be a cousin of the Kaijutsu family? Said character wouldn't be from Sandpoint, but knows where his/her uncle's family lives, and would be interested in visiting them once he/she has come of age (aka, now).

I played alot of core-only games, it can be very fun if you had a good concept, but core only may limit other nice concepts. its really your call DM, besides... You are the "game master" XD

That sounds like a good idea. I am okay with it. Have at it, I would like to see a background.

So.... Where is the discussion thread you spoke of?

Sczarni

I have not set it up yet. I will let everyone know when I have done so.

Sczarni

Thread is now open in the discussion tab. Have fun!

DM, i changed a language retroactively as it does not make sense Alaer has it, is it ok?

Aye captain... Though I would personally consider the bard to be a Skill character too... rather than putting it in Support.

:( Thanks to school, I'm unlikely to have time to complete my application before the deadline. I'm tapping out. Good luck to all the applicants, and I hope everyone has lots of fun!

This is Karmic Knight's submission. Sorry for taking so long but I got caught up in his back story. Everything can be read under my profile. Enjoy.

I like this idea. I'll throw something up if you don't mind that I'm also running this myself...

Sczarni

How far are you into your game? What I want to try and avoid is out of game knowledge affecting peoples decisions.

Well I own both the 3.5 vs and AE versions. But with how old this AP is, it's not exactly easy to get people who want to play this that haven't played before. So it already becomes a matter of game knowledge, at least for the first 2-3 chapters. The trick is finding people who can keep in game knowledge separated from previously known knowledge. Kind of one of the reasons that each time this AP is ran, who ever is running it changes it up a little, and continuously adds to it so that it's never the same game ran in content. I have no problem keeping in game from out of game knowledge, I've been GM'ing for the better part of a decade. So if you have no issue with me playing, I can have a character or two whipped up for you. It's just up to if you'll allow a guy like me to join in the first place.

Sczarni

I am okay if you want to draw up a character. You will have to go easy on me because I am new at this pep thing, at least for gm'ing. Lol.

There are ten submissions...

Melee/NonMagical: 4
Arcane Damage: 2
Healer: 1
Skill Nonmagical: 1
Skill Magical: 1

Looks like all of the competition is in the melee tank section... :D This makes me happy.

It would be hilarious if Three Fighters, a Barbarian, and a rogue got picked just because they had the best roleplay in the other tab...

Disclaimer I'm not saying that this is the case, just that it would be entertaining for me personally if it turned out that way, because people would have an 'oh' moment when they realized they had a massively unbalanced party...

Seven Hours to go... Who will be chosen? Dun Dun Duuuuuuuun

I know I may be too late for this dance, but this was a char I designed a few years ago before I had to take a gaming hiatus due to RL demands. I can scale him back to level 1 if selected, but I think the concept is a sound one.

Appearance:
Kort is a a scarred, squat dwarf with bowlegs and a bulging belly of muscle, he stands 4'3 and weighs 200 lbs. His blond hair and beard is full, but unkempt, and he constantly seems to carry the smell of fresh tilled earth upon him.

Background:
Kortus' life changed the night that his wife and clan were slaughtered by a red dragon seeking to convert their small mountain community into its lair. Spared this fate by being out on a trading run with other craftsmen when it happened, Kort and the others were greeted upon their return by the sights of fiery devastation. Searching, but failing to find any survivors, the dwarves fled before the dragon took notice of them as well.

Gathering his few possessions into a pack, Kort left that night and vowed never to look upon his home again until he could avenge his wife and clan. The dragon that devastated his home was nicknamed 'Longtooth' by the few survivors because of his mouth has a great overbite.

Roaming across the countryside aimlessly and full of grief, Kort found a new purpose in life quite by accident when an old huntsman named Jacob offered to share his fire and meal with him. Normally Kort was was wary of accepting hospitality, as he had been robbed many times in his journey, but there was something about the man that filled Kort with an instant trust of him and he accepted the offer.

For the next three years, Kort would travel and learn the ways of Erastil from Jacob parting ways only after helping him with his Final Hunt, the last act a worshiper of Erastil preforms before passing a natural death.

After burying his friend, Kort headed North to the small town of Sandport, meaning only to stay long enough only get some fresh supplies and to visit Madame Mvashti. Jacob had often spoke of his wish for Kortus to visit the Varisian elder, as she has long been a friend of the druids in the area.

Driving Force:
While Jacob has helped Kortus find inner peace, the one thing he could not do was remove his friend's hatred of all dragonkind. Rationally Kort knows not all dragons are evil, but there is the splinter of hatred there all the same. He does hope to restore the balance of life and death by gaining enough strength to return and hunt down Longtooth the Red.

IC conversation:
As Kortus set the last stone in place, he leaned backwards allowing the tension to ease out of his back. While repairing the fence was a minor job, it still felt good to work with his hands all the same. It had not taken long for those in his adopted home of Sandport to learn that a trained mason who worked for ale and sausages was often too good a deal to miss.

"My thanks Kortus. I don't know why the boys insist on knocking over my fence all the time. Honestly, I don't know what they find so interesting here."

Glancing at the stern faced woman before him and the smirking face of her daughter, Kort felt that he knew what kept bringing the boys around to this part of the yard.

"Aye, it be a mystery t' be sure Goodie Cat'rine. Perhaps ye might consider taking up Hostler Otis on gettin' a guard dog. Ye never know if that might slow them down some."

Watching the smirk on Goodie Cathrine's daughter face increase, Kortus knew that nothing short of divine intervention would stop young lads from chasing the lasses.

~As it didn't stop me from chasing Brigit.~

Forcing the dark thought away, Kortus picked up his tools and gratefully accepted the small bundle of smoked meats and the skin of ale.

"A good day t' ya both, and if ya be needin' me again, just send word."

Walking towards the heart of town, Kortus looked around and smiled. While the human city was nothing like his first, and true home, he could not deny it had grown on him over the years. It was true that he was not as active in patrolling these days, but Erastil knew Kortus still kept his ears open for anything serious and that was good enough for them both.

The funny thing is, that all the melee/NonMagical guys are the most active and the most fun characters to play with, from what I saw so far :D

Lius The Swift wrote:

I know right! I mean, I would totally play in a non-magical campaign... We can potentially just have the five non magic people, and KICK THIS AP ADVENTURE'S BUTT!

I hope the DM doesn't just want us to have a balance party, and cuts some of us out because of it... It'd be a total blast to not have magical support...

If that's something the DM decides would be fun, I won't hold any grudges.

Alitsa Gratia wrote:

Oh, Alitsa, I'm not trying to kick you out or anything... Trust me No, I don't want that... I was just kicking around an idea. A Cleric-less party is very difficult to play, I was just speculating

Sczarni

I will add my two cents in right now lol. The IC discussion page was for me to see how well a player represents his/her character and how well someone can format. Frequency of posts is not considered as the required post quota is listed in the OP.

Again I am only requiring 1 post a day. If we go faster that is fine. Weekends are not as important and I figure will be more RP than combat. I get very few days with my wife and the weekends are the only time I get. :-)

Tylur would love to have Alitsa she can be his spiritual guide. Im hoping to turn Tylur into a paladin if i feel the rp goes that direction

Nevermind. I wouldn't have a complete submission up within the next hour. I've got the character stated and rolled up, but trying to come up with details that fit for a background are hazy and don't really fit well together with the campaign trait requirement. I swear, the traits they offer kill a lot of potential character ideas. Eitherway, I'm not gonna be able to piece the background of a Calistrian cleric who's a courtesan together very well in the next hour.

Sczarni

Kyles,

If you have a general idea of a backstory you can always post that and work with me later on it if you get picked.

I am withdrawing my character for consideration.

Sczarni

Sorry to hear that. I will update the list.

Sczarni

Sczarni

There is still an hour, more than enough time to post if you like.

I will.

I have to say the others have done a pretty good job with their posts, a shame there is only 4 spots.

KyleS' submission. A human cleric of Calistria who works as a healer/courtesan. Still gotta put in the format for what you requested, but there is a link to a character sheet from Myth-Weavers and a very barebones background concept.

Sczarni

Alright recruitment is officialy closed.

This is the Final list! I will review in detail every character that has been submitted as I have only skimmed all entries. Hopefully by tomorrow I will have everyone chosen. Thank you to everyone who submitted characters, everyone did a great job. You may keep RP'ing in the discussion page until I have made the decision.

Characters may also RP out after character selection if not chosen. You never know when we will need to replace or add someone. Thanks!

I'm really sorry, but I need to drop from the running. Some things have come up in real life, and it would be unwise for me to get into another game on top of what I have.

Aww... That sucks, but I understand. Good luck Alitsa, and may things turn for the better for you!

I concur, hopefully things will get go back to normal for you soon.

That's too bad Alitsa. Hope all is good and perhaps our paths will cross again.

Also didn't realize that both character I just tried to start up RP with in the other thread have dropped out. I feel alone there now lmao.

Any idea as to when we can expect a list of players Varrian?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Same here. I replied to you just to kill some time, as both characters are from sandpoint Is reasonable they know each other.

I mean lars is from sandpoint.

Saw that Seth, and responded.

That is a good thing... apparently Anaach is going to die from food poisoning because the Hagfish challenge; doesn't sound too good for my health

Yay for waiting lol.

Sczarni
