Thorthal will climb the stairs and fall back as far as he can, as he is clearly incapable of being useful in this fight.

At the door, Haer Kul will listen for any sounds beyond the door. If quiet, he will search for traps and disable them if necessary. Then he will try the door and if necessary try to unlock it.

He does notice that the image of a raven has been carved into the stone so it appears to perch on the keyhole.

"Raven?" Haer Kul turns a deep red as he puts away his tools and takes out the raven key we found at at Silam's house. Gentlemen, this may lead to the horror that is behind the affliction and the missing townspeople. Does anyone need to prepare before I open the door?"

Beyond the door is an octagonal room with a low (7-foot high) ceiling and a recessed alcove to the east. Along the far wall, on a dais, a black stone statue of a hooded figure stands within a pristine pentagram. It clutches a black crown in one hand and a raven in the other. Perhaps more disturbing, a dancing, magical aura surrounds the figure, bathing the room in a soft, violet light, while a long tentacle protrudes from the figure's hood where its face would normally be.
Fortunately, it is just a statue.

Petronicus spies a number of magical auras within the alcove, when Haer Kul steps in front of him and causes more auras to spring up in his vision.
The alcove is painted a flat black, on all surfaces. Haer Kul sees a cracked leather bag on the floor in the far corner.

As he stands immobile, a mass of something translucent drops from the ceiling of the alcove. It unfolds itself and one arm strikes at the dazed Petronicus.
