Male Elder GM

Unfortunately, that is the dome of the apparatus, so no stepping into flank. Mind you, flank bonus changed nothing on those rolls.

Thorthal manages to catch the ooze with a mighty punch.

Still waiting for a Fort save from Morgrom. Then it's his turn,
if he's not paralyzed.

Out of spells, out of items and desperate, Petronicus sighs and tries to club the ooze.

Petronicus bashes the creature, then Morgrom's sword plows through the creature again.

"Your struggles make no sense. Being assimilated will lessen the pain of conversion."

The ooze extends a glistening arm towards Petronicus, reminding him of that recurring dream.

"Who do you work for, creature?" Haer Kul will move diagonally to flank with Thorthal. If that's squeezing, he will attack defensively to get the +2 AC.

Male Elder GM

Haer Kul burns the remains of the aberration.

Petronicus:
Petronicus is fascinated by the horrific magnificence of the flesh machine, and while he is examining it, he sees a significant looking vertical crease near the base.

It appears there are no immediate threats.

Male Gnome Investigator Lvl:3 HP:25 AC:15(16)/13/13 F:+4 R:+5 W:+3 Init:+2 Perception:+10 low-light

After the burning, Haer Kul will start examining the machine, trying to figure out what it does, how it works, how to shut it down.

Male Gnome Investigator Lvl:3 HP:25 AC:15(16)/13/13 F:+4 R:+5 W:+3 Init:+2 Perception:+10 low-light

"Oh. That's a crease?" Haer Kul takes a closer look:
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

"I don't think that's a crease", he says looking in the wrong spot.

Human Male Wizard Lvl:3 HP:19/19 AC:11/11/10 F:+2 R:+2 W:+4 Init:+1 Perception:+10

Petronicus walks over and opens what he assumes is a hidden door or panel.

Male Gnome Investigator Lvl:3 HP:25 AC:15(16)/13/13 F:+4 R:+5 W:+3 Init:+2 Perception:+10 low-light

"Oh, there! Why didn't you say so. You should have let me check that for traps. After all I have very keen senses. Sometimes."

Male Elder GM

The machine is made as much from organic material as it is inorganic. Haer Kul can see that it is used to produce and refine alchemical substances, as well as perform vivisection, but it also has other functions beyond his understanding.

The crease is not the edge of a panel, but instead an opening into a compartment within the device. which contains 11 vials of liquid and a well-made dagger.

Human Male Wizard Lvl:3 HP:19/19 AC:11/11/10 F:+2 R:+2 W:+4 Init:+1 Perception:+10

If the vials or dagger are magical, Petronicus will try to identify them taking 10.

"Crossbow Mr. Dwarf? I believe I will take you up on that generous offer, but I apologize in advance for losing all of your quarrels."

Bardos took a magical dagger from early that I believe was identified as +1

Also, Light or Heavy Crossbow?

Male Dwarf Brawler Lvl: 3 HP:28/28 AC: 17(16)/12/15(14) +Ring? F: +5 R: +5 W: +3 Init: +2 Perception: +8 Darkvision MF: 3/4

Thorthal hands Bardos a Light Crossbow and 17 bolts.

Male Elder GM

Petronicus:
The dagger is enchanted, with a moderate transmutation aura, but Petronicus does not know the specifics. 5 of the vials contain potions of lesser restoration. The other vials do not radiate magic, but the liquid in one looks different from the other 5. The glass these 6 vials are made of is of superior quality to any Petronicus has seen before: clear, precisely formed, and even with a threaded neck to hold a metal cap over the opening.

I forgot to say that the dagger is small sized.

Male Gnome Investigator Lvl:3 HP:25 AC:15(16)/13/13 F:+4 R:+5 W:+3 Init:+2 Perception:+10 low-light

"Well, that certainly looks useful!" Haer Kul takes the dagger, and tries a few slashes in the air. He looks at Petronicus. "Is it magical?"

Male Elder GM

Petronicus, Haer Kul:
In your examinations of the device, you see that a number of the glass receptacles hold body parts floating in liquid, and it occurs to you that another function of the machine may be creating and purifying diseases.

"Is it over?"

Male Gnome Investigator Lvl:3 HP:25 AC:15(16)/13/13 F:+4 R:+5 W:+3 Init:+2 Perception:+10 low-light

"Who said that?" Haer Kul looks around for the source of the voice. Perception: 10 + 9 = 19

Male Elder GM

Haer Kul is fairly sure it was Rexel calling out.

Human Male Wizard Lvl:3 HP:19/19 AC:11/11/10 F:+2 R:+2 W:+4 Init:+1 Perception:+10

"Come have a look Rexel. You will be delighted with this bizzare machinery."

Human Male Wizard Lvl:3 HP:19/19 AC:11/11/10 F:+2 R:+2 W:+4 Init:+1 Perception:+10

"It looks to be some sort of reverse apothecary, where diseases are brewed."

Male Elder GM

"If the creature is defeated, get me down!!"

Male Gnome Investigator Lvl:3 HP:25 AC:15(16)/13/13 F:+4 R:+5 W:+3 Init:+2 Perception:+10 low-light

"The question is how to so safely. Mr. Petronicus, do you have a web spell, or spider climb, or feather fall or anything like that?" Haer Kul will look at the machine, to see if any parts can be dismantled and be used to help get Rexel down. (Maybe we could build a slide out of some of the pipes? :-)

"Rexel, do you have any extracts of spider climb or feather fall that you could use? (Or better yet, fly?)"

If the pit is not too deep, can we find anything soft to cushion the landing?
Is there anything on the ceiling we could tie a rope to, and lower Rexel down safely? Can we entangle a grappling hook in the goo, and test it to see if it's strong enough for Haer Kul to climb up the attached rope (and support both him and Rexel coming down?

We still don't know how deep the pit is.

DM Rambler wrote:

Thorthal is unable to see any bug attempting to eat Rexel except for the entangled Scuttles. The pit is 20' deep, and contains 7 listless townsfolk.

Haer Kul cannot think of a scenario where being greased up would not help.

There are sufficient strands of webbing in the adherer's lair to make a net of sorts below Rexel.

Human Male Wizard Lvl:3 HP:19/19 AC:11/11/10 F:+2 R:+2 W:+4 Init:+1 Perception:+10

"I have no spells left. I am a master of scroll magic, but have no scrolls." Petronicus sighs audibly.

"Let us dirty our hands with sticky webbing and try to make a net of sorts."

Thorthal will assist however the rest of the party directs him. He will knot and use his rope, anchoring it somewhere or asking someone to hold to descend into the pit if he needs to.

Male Elder GM

With time and effort, the party is able to retrieve Rexel from his precarious position and the rest of the townsfolk from the pit. The others are unresponsive but do as they are told.

Rexel speaks up.
"I don't know if you have other plans here, but we should get these folks out of here first. I could use rest myself."

The apothecary has several wounds on his limbs, which appear like something was feeding on him.

Human Male Wizard Lvl:3 HP:19/19 AC:11/11/10 F:+2 R:+2 W:+4 Init:+1 Perception:+10

"Agreed. Let's get these people back to town."

Male Elder GM

The party makes their way back out of Arvarenhode Manor, bringing the rescued townsfolk with them.

On the way back to town, they have time to think about what has happened.

What was that strange blob creature? Where did it come from?
What were those strange words, "Jagladine", "Klaven"?
What was behind all of this?

Many questions remain, some will probably never be answered.

Congratulations on finishing "The Assimilation Strain"! Please check your email.

Questions like:

Will Rexel share more of his formulae with Haer Kul?
How much time will Haer Kul get with Rexel to transcribe said formulae?
Can he buy some alchemist fire?

Male Elder GM

Carry on as if the answer to all of the above was "no" (not necessarily final answer).
