1. You do have a direction. I said Exiel was pretty sure she was somewhere in the webs when she was casting. She just has a limited way of moving within the webs without disturbing them, and she can move after casting.
2. Rules are clear that you can't take AoOs against a target you can't see.
3. If one of you had a see invisibility scroll, this would already be over. You're a mid-level party. I can't just hand her over to you guys.
4. There IS a creature attacking you guys. The screaming head creature.

If we had seen the Xill rooting around for a healing potion to bring back the insta-teleporting invisible summoner way back when I had two attackum spells running and she was helpless, things would be different now.
As it was, the Xill effectively did a move action and a full-round action all in one round and now we are out of resources against an invisible opponent and are soon to be facing the whole complex because we are blasting away and making a ton of noise, despite having prepared for and executed a quick quiet strike.
Fort save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Not wanting to risk traversing the grease, Aestrid moves back next to Isaac and touches him a third time to grant him Calistria's luck. She calls out to the woman in the webs, "You're running out of options. Soon you'll have to show yourself and die or run away."

Fort: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Damn sneaky little bugger was summoned inside my reach, and I have nowhere to 5ft step to so I can stab it...
I'll wait and see what the others do first.

Fort: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29
Go to Rahadoum, they said. They don't allow clerics of weird evil religions, they said. What a crock. Did I see a liquor store outside when I came in? I'm going to need a few gallons of Oldlaw Whiskey.
Suddenly, Isaac sees the skull! Startled, he jumps over the table and stands at the edge of the grease, readying an action to unload both barrels on this thing. He's annoyed now.

![]() |

Isaac moves and readies an action to shoot the flying head. If no particular trigger is declared, I will just treat it as an attack and roll it for you? Aestrid follows him to give him a blessing from her goddess.
Lillian casts shield.
Ranus and Exiel?

![]() |

Sorry, been a busy day.
Exiel will ready a partial charge for if the Blackfire woman appears or comes into view. I think I know what the head-creature is, and I should be able to make almost any save I need if it hits me.

Should Isaac not drop the floating head, Ranus will send a Magic Missile into it before running southward to make sure there weren't reinforcements coming, and to get a better vantage.

Isaac unloads his pistol at the flying head as it moves to bite Exiel.

Both shots hit and completely devastate the creature.
Ranus sees the head go down, and proceeds southwards to see if more enemies are coming. Exiel's readied action does not trigger as the woman does indeed reappear, but far too close for the lance-wielder to do anything in time (in C10).
"I will teach you to mock me, you bi***," she spits at Aestrid as a spiked pit opens up beneath her and Isaac. Immediately after, she disappears again, but this time she immediately reappears deeper within the web, this time beyond Exiel's reach and with cover from Exiel. Yes, Ranus, she was using the exact same ability as you.
Isaac and Aestrid need to make DC18 reflex saves or fall into the pit, taking some substantial damage. Falling into the pit causes you to lose sight of almost anything not adjacent to the pit itself, which is more or less precisely what she is hoping for.

![]() |

Round 12 begins
Aestrid and Isaac, remember to make your saves. If you succeed, you end up in a square adjacent to the pit. If you fail, you take 4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 2, 1) = 9 falling damage and another 2d6 ⇒ (6, 2) = 8 from the spikes at the bottom.
Oh and one more thing. You don't exactly see just her. You see 1d4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 1 = 7 of her. They each look identical, but are each doing different things and you have no way of telling them apart.

![]() |

Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Aestrid tumbles into the pit but luckily manages to avoid any serious damage other than a few cuts and minor bruising.
She quickly stands and looks around, healing herself (and Isaac if he's nearby) by channelling Calistria's grace. The healing energy feels a bit like insect stings, hot and painful at first, soothing to a gentle warmth over time.

Isaac's reflex save: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19
Isaac manges to dive out of the way to keep from falling into the pit, and spends his round moving a little further from the edges to avoid falling in.
Aestrid channels a wave of healing that helps her recover somewhat from the fall into the spiky pit.
Ranus and Lillian let loose a barrage of magic missiles that slam into the fleeing blackfire adept, dropping her (finally). Her images disappear, enabling Exiel to step into the webs (without getting entangled) and finishing her off.
Round 13 begins
There are no apparent enemies around at the moment, and the woman in the corner of the room gestures frantically at her mouth.
Aestrid is in the pit.

![]() |

We no longer need to go round-by-round for now, but I am still going to keep track of time. Tell me what you do, and I'll see how much time passes.

![]() |

In the bottom of the pit, Aestrid uses her hat of disguise to take the form of the blackfire adept. Looking up, she heals herself while she waits for the spell's duration to expire.
Channel Heal 2: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1) = 9

![]() |

Not being much help to the Aestrid in the pit Lillian moves to secure any items the Adept might have still.. Casting detect magic and searching the woman..

![]() |

Isaac: Ranus already ascertained that the woman could not speak due to a horribly mangled tongue.
Lillian: the woman was carrying the following:
scroll x 4
wand
mwk dagger
cloak (magical)
spell component pouch (2)
spellbook
268 gp
Aestrid, it looks like you can climb out of the pit, but it would take a substantial climb check, and you would take damage as you attempted it.

![]() |

Cast Read Magic on the scrolls and go spellcraft on the other stuff..
Take 10 on spellcraft gives a 23 for the wand and cloak..

![]() |

Aestrid, it looks like you can climb out of the pit, but it would take a substantial climb check, and you would take damage as you attempted it.
You mean climb checks she can't currently make in her armour, and 8 of them over 4 rounds... She knows that it was a spell and it won't last for ever. At worst, she pops invisibility and sneaks out after everyone else.

Exiel makes a detour around the southern passageway to see what lies beyond, trusting the more experienced Isaac to work out what to do about the rescued woman.
"Come forth, Lucien. The immediate danger has passed, but I will need your eyes and ears now."
Exiel's perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Lucien's perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29

![]() |

Lillian detects the following:
scroll of arcane eye
scroll of blur
scroll of shield
scroll of wind wall
wand of mirror image (13 charges)
cloak of resistance +2
A bunch of keys (forgot to put this in the earlier list)
That took 1 round to get to the woman, 1 round to search her, 10 rounds to read and identify. 12 rounds in total have passed for Lillian. The rest can fill in 12 rounds of actions. The pit spell fades after 7 rounds, so Aestrid has 5 rounds till Lillian finishes identifying the loot.
Meanwhile...
Exiel gets to his current location in 3 rounds. He sees finds that along the southern-most passageway there is another narrow passage leading North to a steel door. It appears to be slightly ajar.
Exiel does not perceive much himself apart from the men in the cells all clamouring for his attention, but his keen-sensed familiar notices 2 things of interest.
"Psst. Hey, check out that guy over there. It looks like he's got a bloodied and swollen mouth like that other woman who was on the table. Also, did you hear those voices? It sounds like someone upstairs is telling someone else that he heard a strange and terrifying howl and he is trying to get someone else, or a few other people to come down and check it out!"

![]() |

Realising that the big clump of webs and the dead guard at the table would be a dead-giveaway, Exiel sends Lucien back the way they came to report the news to the first party member he sees.
"We've got company! A bunch of people may be coming down via the stairs to investigate soon!"
To the man with the bloodied mouth, Exiel says "if I were to call you a warden, what would you be a warden of?"
I'm guessing he can't speak, like the woman back in the big room, but I want to see his reaction. Also, weren't we told that there were 2 locked rooms?

![]() |

After waiting out the spell, Aestrid, now wearing the illusory skin of the defeated Backfire Adept, looks over to Scrillion and around to the various cells.
They'll be on top of us soon if I can't stop it.
Trying her hand at imitating the woman's voice as she touches up her disguise to look like she's been in a battle, she offers, "We won't be able to get all these people out before the guards come. I'll head to the stairs and try to delay them but we'd best be ready for another fight."

![]() |

Aestrid: that depends on whether or not the body is still sitting there, and whether or not the spell wears out before the guards come. From the bird's report, you are unlikely to have that time.
Now counting rounds from the time the previous battle ended (i.e. the BA was taken out in 'Round 0').
Round 1: Lillian moves to the BA, Exiel starts to move around the corner, Isaac speaks to the woman.
Round 2: Lillian searches the body
Round 3: Exiel's familiar detects people coming, is sent to warn the rest of the party.
Round 4: Exiel asks the man in the cell his question, and gets part of a reply.
Round 5: Exiel's bird reports to the rest of the party.
Exiel:
The man's eyes light up at your question, and he begins to speak, but only manages to moan weakly. He puts a finger to his bloodied mouth and begins to write on the ground with a trembling hand using his own blood. The light from the torches on the wall allow you to see that he is slowly and crudely writing the letters 'R' and 'I'.
Ranus and Isaac, for the sake of continuity, I will assume you were trying to make sense of the woman's moans or otherwise standing around for the first 5 rounds. Lillian is identifying stuff and Aestrid is waiting for the spell to wear off. I need all your actions in particular for rounds 5 and 6 (when Exiel's bird brings its warning).

![]() |

I have a plan for the body, and sorry if I jumped the gun. I thought you wanted actions up to round 12...

![]() |

The web spell looks like it's not going anywhere, and it'll be a dead give-away. That body too. Well, one thing at a time, I suppose.
Exiel till go to the body at the table and pick it up, then run to the others. With his strength, he should have no trouble carrying the body.
On his way back, he will stop to see if the man has started to write 'F' and 'T'. If yes, he will tell the man, "Save your strength, friend, we're here to rescue you. But first, we need to make sure the guards don't raise a ruckus. Hang tight."

![]() |

Sorry that I haven't posted yet, my desktop computer crashed and wouldn't restart for two/three days.. Fixed now, hopefully.
With the Blackfire woman defeated, Ranus speaks the spell cut-off phrase to dismiss his web in case they needed to yet escape. With that in mind, Ranus moves over to the pit and casts Levitate on Aestrid as well to let her rejoin the party.
With that out of the way, Ranus joins Lillian in searching the body.
Two rounds for the first actions and then however many to ID items. Taking 10 on Spellcraft for 23.

![]() |

Ok, Ranus has dismissed the web, but to levitate Aestrid out of the pit, you need to be able to see her, which requires you to go to the edge of the pit. Make me a reflex save please.

![]() |

Lillian takes the scrolls, wand, and cloak and rejoins the party. "We've got some arcane scrolls, a wand of mirror image, a cloak of resistance +2 and some keys.. Im guessing the keys are to these cells and the rest of the complex.. Does anyone want any of this? If not ill hold onto them for now.."

![]() |

Ok, so here's the breakdown:
Round 1: Lillian moves to the BA, Exiel starts to move around the corner, Isaac speaks to the woman. Ranus moves towards the pit
Round 2: Lillian searches the body, Ranus moves to the edge of the pit, casts levitate and shifts back to avoid falling in.
Round 3: Exiel's familiar detects people coming, is sent to warn the rest of the party. Ranus levitates Aestrid out of the pit.
Round 4: Exiel asks the man in the cell his question, and gets part of a reply.
Round 5: Exiel's bird reports to the rest of the party. Exiel moves and picks up the body.
Lillian, you have time to identify either the cloak or the wand or 3 scrolls, Ranus can identify 2 scrolls. Aestrid can act outside of the pit in rounds 4 and 5 but keep in mind you do not know people are coming till round 5.
Round 6 starts
You are where you are on the map.
Exiel, even you can now hear booted feet approaching the stairway. You have already declared that you are hauling the body away. Your action for the round is to carry him to your current location. As you pass the man with the bloodied mouth, you see that he has indeed written the word 'RIFT' crudely with his blood. You deliver your message and keep moving
Everyone else declare actions for round 6.

![]() |

Lillian hides where she is and continues to identify items whilst Aestrid moves to A11 (I'll assume Lillian spared a round to dismiss her grease spell to facilitate this move). Ranus stands around wondering what he should do. Isaac stares off into space as well.
Exiel and Aestrid hear the thumping of boots, and a voice calling out, "hoy, Sathot, what's going on down there? Damn bookworms saying they heard some wierd howl and some of them are literally pissing their pants, and the black candles have been lit. What's going on down there?"

![]() |

Round 7 begins
1d20 ⇒ 2
Declare actions! Keep in mind there are still bodies lying around, especially the big UNCONSCIOUS but not dead Ceustodaemon in the South-East corner.

![]() |

Aestrid hurries south into the room at the bottom of the stairs. She shouts through the door, doing her best to imitate the Blackfire Adept's accent, "We've been attacked. We have it under control for now but there might be another wave coming. Return to your posts!"
Double move to A19

Wearing the outer appearance of the Adept, Aestrid turns her back to the stairs and waves to the others to get out of sight.

![]() |

Aestrid replies, "Recall him, this is an internal matter. Go quickly and be vigilant."
