Kawrock |
Kawrock steps back to allow room for Vincent to work with his greatsword. "I think you'll have better luck then I have had."
Vincent Blackwood |
Y'know, you could have attacked as a standard action and then moved. The spider can't take attacks of opportunity while grappled/grappling, so we're free to rotate in/out as needed. It's also easier to hit while grappled due to the -4 Dex.
Vincent swiftly moves to the open spot and swings at the exposed flank of the spider with his sword.
Power Attack: 1d20 + 9 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 9 - 1 + 1 = 16
Damage: 2d6 + 7 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (1, 1) + 7 + 3 + 1 = 13
Miko Teppen |
Pfoo. What a mess! Strange though, it kept saying it wanted back. Would it have been trapped here?
тυιcн |
Tuich sags as tension leaves her body. "I don't know. I wish we could have communicated somehow. Maybe we could've helped it."
Tuich will retrieve and repack the flasks. Good job you guys!
Vyk Tyr |
HP 19/27 (-2) Con damage.
Vyk coughs up a large wad of blood.
"You know what? Personally, I think I'm completely okay with this thing dying unhappy."
Vyk frowned.
"Oh, gods. That's not a piece of my lung there is it?"
Anyone have Lesser Restoration prepped?
тυιcн |
Tuich frowns and then moves over to Vyk with wand drawn. "Crybaby," she chides, trying to distract him from his pain with humor.
CLW->Vyk: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
CLW->Vyk: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Sorry Vyk, Tuich doesn't know it and Oracles can't swap spells in and out as Clerics do.
Vincent Blackwood |
Guess who's a spontaneous divine caster! THIS GUY! And I totally have Lesser Restoration known, because I don't really use my spellcasting in combat very often because hitting things with a large sword is generally more effective than the inquisitor spell list.
Vincent wipes off his sword before setting it down against the wall. "You don't look so well. Luckily, I have a spell that should help with that. Just hold still while I finish the incantation." He lays a hand on Vyk's shoulder and begins a longer than normal prayer of healing to cure the types of wounds that simple curative magic doesn't understand.
2/4 1st level and 1/2 2nd level spells remaining now.
Lesser Restoration: 1d4 ⇒ 2 points of Con damage healed.
Vincent re-shoulders his sword after casting the spell and giving the tiefling a grin. "Gorum needs you to keep fighting."
тυιcн |
Tuich watches with interest as Vincent works his magic.
"You need to teach me how to do that someday," she says quietly after he's done.
Miko Teppen |
And Gorum's not the only one Miko says with a wink.
StephNyan |
You take a look around, but conclude that the spider was the only thing this room held.
When you head back you catch a glimpse of the big fish that swims in the air. It quickly swims away from you when you approach.
You head to the next door and open it. Another corridor is revealed, which leads to yet another door that you open. The room beyond looks like a laboratory, but the equipment's all ruined. It looks like a fire destroyed everything in this room.
The air in this ruined chamber is filled with a thin cloud of soot and dust - the particles and motes float as if gravity didn't apply to them. It appears the strange gravity effect from before is present in this room.
тυιcн |
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Tuich frowns. "Okay, let's not go in there."
Vincent Blackwood |
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
Vincent places a cloth over his mouth and nose to help filter out the soot, walking forward and disregarding Tuich's advice to ignore the room entirely. He retrieves and holds up a particularly shiny gem that he finds in a desk drawer, seemingly untouched by the fire. "Perhaps it's magical?" he suggests to the others as he moves away from the room, hoping that he didn't miss any further secrets.
Vincent does a lot of things, but spellcraft is not one of them.
тυιcн |
"Wait, what are you doing, I just said... Augh! Gorumites!"
Despite Tuich's concern for Vincent's safety -- masked by her feigned irritation -- she's immediately intrigued by his question. "Well, let's see. I'm not too good with this, but... మేజిక్ కనుగొను!"
Detect Magic with Spellcraft: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Miko Teppen |
Curiosity killed the cat, but the cat didn't have a greatsword on him.
Miko glances at the gem, but leaves the identification to Tuich.
Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Khismia al-Khair |
Khismia took her scroll away.
- If you need that again, I have a prayer scroll, - she said, just for her friends to know what to expect.
тυιcн |
"Well," Tuich says thoughtfully, "It's pretty..." then hands the gem back to Vincent.
Fair enough on Spellcraft, but she did cast Detect Magic, so should at least be able to identify it there's an aura, and the approximate power of the magic if so.
Vyk Tyr |
"Hmm, let me take a look."
Spellcraft w/ detect magic: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
"Gosh, it's shiny."
Miko Teppen |
Where my roll said 'will', it should have been spellcraft - so I've failed the roll as well.
Marvellous, isn't it?
тυιcн |
"It truly is," Tuich says in response to Vyk and Miko alike.
Is this sad or what? :op
Miko: I figured the Will roll was to restrain yourself from grabbing it out of Tuich's hands and doing the job right! ;o) When you got a seven I was like, whoa, she must have set the DC really low!
Vincent Blackwood |
"If none of you can tell, it's probably some legendary artifact. We'll take it back with us to the lodge to have it examined there, at the very least." Vincent grins and pockets the gem. "There may be more in the room, but I'd prefer to not spend more time than necessary in there. Some of the soot was starting to cling to my clothes. Shall we move on?" he points in the direction of the next door while adjusting his sword's resting place on his shoulder.
Miko Teppen |
Better not drop it, though. It's got a conjuration aura on it - maybe something gets released if it breaks, releasing a powerful demon or something like that.
Miko really has no clue, but she eager to go on.
тυιcн |
Tuich gives Kawrock an odd look. "What are you, a phoe... oh... right."
StephNyan |
And again, as you move through the circular hallway, the big fish flees from you.
You pass a couple more doors till you arrive in the next room. This strange dome-like room is mostly unassuming at first glance, but upon gazing upward, the magical nature of the chamber quickly becomes apparent. Looming trees with black bark and dry, writhing branches extend from the arched ceiling one hundred feet above, defying gravity and growing downward rather than up. A fine layer of soil covers the stone floor of the room below, and several sets of bloody footprints lead from the northern doorway toward the door to the west.
Vyk Tyr |
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
"Huh. Let me try something."
Vyk pours out a little water from his waterskin to see which way it falls.
Vincent Blackwood |
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Vincent points up at a strange green hound trying to hide among the upside down trees. "We have company on the ceiling. Or maybe we're on the ceiling and he's on the ground? The trees seem to think so."
Miko Teppen |
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Nono, he's on the ceiling and we're on the ground. If he were on the ground and we were on the ceiling, we'd be falling down, and we can't have that, can we?
Miko tries to make sure the 'gravity field' extends into this dome. She doesn't want to be caught falling to the ceiling should gravity not conform to her wishes. She is picky that way.
тυιcн |
Tuich peers upwards, trying to spot the animal. "Maybe our 'up' is up for us, and its 'up' is up for it, too?"
She frowns. "I didn't say that very well, did I. What I meant was... um... maybe gravity pulls... out from the center to both ends... I mean, top and bottom... ceiling and floor... you know..." she finishes lamely.
StephNyan |
The water Vyk pours from his water skin falls to the floor.
Miko concludes that there's no special gravity effect in this room, but the trees are instead rooted to the ceiling by some other kind of magic.
With Vincent and Miko both pointing it out, the others also see the large, green hound hiding between the trees. It's standing on a tree's branch, its feet and head pointing in the directions they're supposed to.
See map for doggy! :)
Vyk Tyr |
"I hate to ask because I'm pretty sure I already know the answer, but is there any chance that the green doggy on the ceiling is friendly?"
Want kind of knowledge check can we make, GM?
Miko Teppen |
There's always a chance, Vyk. I've learned not to judge by appearance.
Miko tries to identify the grog.
K(guessing Arcana): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18 Knowledge (Arcana) +8, Knowledge (Dungeoneering) +8, Knowledge (History) +9, Knowledge (Local) +9, Knowledge (Nobility) +8, Knowledge (Religion) +11, anything else +3
Vyk Tyr |
"Hey, I like to keep an open mind, too, but a couple minutes ago a spider with a human face tried to melt my insides. So I'm sure you understand why I'm a bit skittish, right now."
StephNyan |
Miko recognizes the hound to be a kind of fey, known as a barrow hound.
Barrow hounds do not particularly enjoy killing living creatures, and instead prefer to scare them off with their unearthly howls. Failing that, however, barrow hounds are fierce combatants, and their ability to constrict creatures with their prehensile locks makes them formidable foes.
Though sometimes summoned to the Material Plane by powerful fey or honored druids to guard some area of great significance, barrow hounds are more often found on their native plane of the First World, particularly in the sprawling forest known as the Evergrove, where they serve as hunting and guard dogs.
A typical barrow hound is i4 feet long, stands over 7 feet at the shoulder, and weighs just under 3,000 pounds.
It was a Knowledge (Nature) check.
Kawrock |
Kawrock remains silent as the group discuss the hound up in the tree. Finally he manages to swallow the lump that had been forming in his throat before nervously adding. "Usually you can get away from dogs by getting up into the trees. This one however has me at a serious disadvantage. This just isn't right, not one bit."
тυιcн |
With a grin Tuich says, "Maybe the hound's up in the tree because it was trying to get away from something!"
Her grin quickly fades and she glances around nervously as it occurs to her that it might be true.
Vincent Blackwood |
"Maybe. Think it speaks Common?" Vincent replies and then calls out to the hound, "Hello there. Would it be alright if we went through that doorway that you're pointed at?" He starts walking tentatively towards the next door, seeing if the hound reacts at all.
Miko Teppen |
It's a barrow hound. They normally don't hurt people, but they are very obedient, so we'd better watch out for whoever is trying to command it. They don't usually show up here, they're first worlders. Might be a druid or a fey that summoned it. That mad guy with the hat, perhaps?
тυιcн |
Tuich peers up at the animal again. "Could it be stuck here? Can we help it get home?"
Vyk Tyr |
"Whoa! Whoa! Hey, uh, we come in peace, okay?" Vyk tells the barrow hound. "Can you understand us? Bark once for 'yes', and two for 'no'."
Diplomacy: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Well, at least, it'll probably be a funny death.
Miko Teppen |
Home, you want to go home? We can get you out of here, noble creature.
If the creature doesn't turn hostile, she'll cast tongues and repeat herself.
Dip: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 And a note to self to learn Sylvan
тυιcн |
"Easy there, easy," Tuich says softly as she slowly sinks to a crouch. Making no sudden movements, she extends the back of her hand for sniffing.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
That might best be considered an "Aid Another" for Miko...

Kawrock |
Kawrock tries his best, but lets out a surprised "KAWWW!" as the hound leaps down. Though he does his best to settle down and show the creature he means no harm.
Handle animal: 1d20 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 4 = 18
Wild empathy allows me to make his as a diplomacy check.
StephNyan |
The hound doesn't seem to understand what you say, but looks like it's trying to. After Miko casts tongues and repeats herself, the hound's eyes widen a bit. It nods when Miko asks if it wants to go home. When she says you can get it out of here, the hound cocks its head again. It looks at Miko with a questioning look.
The hound sniffs Tuich's hand. It eases up visibly when it senses no ill intend from her or Kawrock either.
тυιcн |
Tuich will try very carefully to give it a little skritch under its chin.
Is it male or female? Adjust accordingly:
"Aww, who's a good boy? You're a good boy! Yes you are! Yes you are!"
