Scarlet Scoundrel |
If nothing else, that is a pretty damn cool backstory!
DM Kludde |
A bolt, an arrow and a magic missile hit the unfortunate wolverine before Chukka steps in and puts it out of its misery.
Combat over
The corpses of the battlefield - ten in all - tell the tale of a clash between two groups. Five are native Kellids who carried axes and wooden shields. The lower half of each Kellid warrior’s face is painted white in a haphazard sprawl of color from the upper lip to just above the larynx.
These warriors were members of the Snowmask Clan, a fearsome group of barbarians known for protecting this region of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords from all outsiders.
The other combatants wear more “civilized” clothes, including heavy winter coats. These non-Kellid dead have been stripped of their weapons and any other valuables, leaving them in only their clothes and padded armor.
One of the kellid is still alive, if barely
There's some boot-shod footprints heading in the same direction as the trail on the map, followed by the more crudely-shod prints of another set of humanoids.
Sothy Samnang |
Ninja-ed
Sothy knew nothing about north previously, so he was inspired about the local stories: "Not that I pretend to become a local king, but we also fought a white dragon and were able to defeat him."
Wow to backstory!
Heal: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Sothy spent some times looking footprints and then said: "Looks like this was only part of the group and others - both Kellids and others - travelled further. Same direction as our map shows. Probably we need to push a bit if we want to get there in time."
Zlata |
Heal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
"Just a moment," Zlata cautions Sothy, "this Kellid is still alive."
Drawing a wand from her pack, she activates it and sends a pulse of healing energy into the unconscious warrior.
Cure Light Wounds (CL3): 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Scarlet Scoundrel |

"These guys are the... umm.. it's right on the tip of my tongue..."
Anyone have an assist? :p
Chukka Bloodbeak |
Knowledge (Local): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Heal: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Survival: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Chukka sheathes his rapier and stands idly by, listening to the others' discoveries.
Scarlet Scoundrel |
Thanks for the assist Chukka!
"Yes thats right, These warriors were members of the Snowmask Clan, a fearsome group of barbarians known for protecting this region of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords from all outsiders. Seems they had a view on people moving around their lands perhaps?"
She looks over to the recovering barbarian...
Mogall Dark |
Mogall smiles giving a little bow, "Thanks Sothy."
Local: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
heal: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17
survival: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16
The small Wayang nods in agreement that the information is correct from both Scarlet and Sothy. He sits and watches as Zlata revives the badly wounded Kellid.
DM Kludde |
The Kellid man comes to his senses, then frowns defiantly as he says
What do you want of me, defilers?
DM Kludde |
It appears he cannot...
With a linguistics check you can try to make basic concepts known
Mogall Dark |
Mogall cast comprehend language upon himself from his spell book using his wand's bonded bonus spell casting ability, then uses his linguistics skill to try and ask questions.
spell effects comprehend language {link}, take 10 linguistics for 17 to ask questions.
The small dark gray Wayang with his face marked by raised geometric patterned scars ask as best he can "What happen here?"
DM Kludde |
Defilers. We attacked them, some got away. Have you come to defile our lands as well?
The man seems rather unfriendly, and bites against the pain as he speaks.
DM Kludde |
You'll need a diplomacy check to make him a bit friendlier
Scarlet Scoundrel |
Hmmm are we able to use Diplomacy without directly talking? Share rations, appear friendly, a little impromptu juggling show? :p
DM Kludde |
Other defilers were here. We fought them, kill most of them, though some got away. he says as the healing takes hold, then points in a northeasterly direction.
DM Kludde |
With that, the party has learned all there is to learn from this man. Somewhat recovered, he sets out in a direction away from the route of the pathfinders, and disappears into the snow.
The party continues through the snow, when they hear the deep, booming sound of a horn to the south of their route.
A few moments later, there's a second horn in answer to the first, coming from the northeast, in the direction of the trail.
Near dusk, the adventurers' route takes them through rougher terrain. The gradual shift into rockier terrain is now more apparent than ever. Large, round stones evoke cobblestones as they form a layer of ground, although the hard-packed snow is still visible between. Ahead, an ancient ring of boulders juts from the ground to form a ring. The wind’s erratic path around the massive rocks has blown the snow into large, haphazard drifts.
The map directs the party to a small cave that will shelter them from the elements for the night. The route leads them through an area with several large snow drifts.
Please make a perception check
Sothy Samnang |
Sothy looks around, cleaning his clothes from the snow.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Scarlet Scoundrel |
"Don't suppose we can sneak about in all this anyhow, any more than they could hide from us in a city. Think the man who left us by now will have doubled back to his friends, and at least given them some pause for thought so they don't just try gutting us"
Scarlet keeps pushing to the cave.
DM Kludde |
The party moves up as suddenly the mounds of snow turn alive! Several kellid warrior jump up out of the snow, and move to subdue the party.
init, Sothy: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
init, Zlata: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (8) + 0 = 8

Surprising the party, the warrior move up, weapons in hand.

Zlata moves around the boulder to the north, calling out, "We mean you no harm! We are simply passing through, in pursuit of a group of villains that killed some of your people."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
If her words do not seem to be having the desired effect, she continues, "We do not wish further bloodshed, but will defend ourselves if forced to,", punctuating her statement with a swing of the flat of her blade at the nearest Kellid.
Scythe (non-lethal): 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 7 + 1 - 4 = 16 for: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (4, 1) + 4 = 9
Vague Henri |
Henri holds his shot, looking to see if the attackers bear the same, or similar, face paintings as the kellid they just rescued. If these attackers seem of the same tribe, he will hold his bow up in one hand and the arrow in the other to show he means them no harm...
Mogall Dark |
Mogall steps forward and cast color spray {link will vs DC15} on two of the three Kellid as per the map.
Sothy Samnang |
Sothy jumped forward to protect Mogall's magic won't work and he needs protection. He retrieved a potion out of his possessions and drank it.

Chukka Bloodbeak |
Chukka draws his rapier, but holds his attacks, waiting to see if Zlata's tactic works.

Zlata tries to convince the Kellids, but the three seem determined to press on. Zlata strikes a warning blow as Mogall knocks two of them straight out. Henri, Sothy and Chukka take a defensive stance while making preparations.

Scarlet simply strides forward, claws readied, in a defensive posture... hoping the man gets the message.
Readied attack, fighting defensively, if he steps in she will try and simply strike nonlethally
DM Kludde |
The man is intent on fighting to the death, an honour that Scarlet doe s not intend to grant him. With a well-aimed clawed punch, she knocks the last kellid to the floor.
Let me roll that for you: 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 7 - 4 = 201d4 ⇒ 4
Combat over
Scarlet Scoundrel |
Why, why are they so stupid? Such sadness :p
"You'd think someone keen on fighting to the death wouldn't have such a glass jaw" Scarlet gets to binding the men, disarming them and taking any holy symbols or spell pouches.
Zlata |
"Or at least the sense to know when they're outnumbered," Zlata agrees as she checks the man's injuries to make sure he won't have more than a nasty headache when he comes to. She then helps Scarlet tie them up, well enough that the part won't be followed but not so well that hunger or thirst would become too big a problem before the Kellids can free themselves.
DM Kludde |
The two sleeping and the single unconscious man are indeed members of the snowmask clan. In their current state, tying them up is no problem whatsoever.
The map points to a nearby cave, which can be used for shelter to sleep for the night.
Scarlet Scoundrel |
"Do we drag them to the cave? When they awake they might be more amenable to discussion by a warm fire"
Vague Henri |
Henri nods. "Even warriors of this land might perish left unconscious and tied. Once they are revived and calm, perhaps we can enlist their aid!" He then picks one of them up and slings its inert form over his shoulder.
Mogall Dark |
Mogall shrugs "The two I took out should recover with a minute or two. Unless they can speak a common language, I won't be able to talk to them like the first one until the next day."
The small waylang wizard uses his pearl of power to recover his color spray spell just in case it needed before the next day.
Scarlet Scoundrel |
"A warm fire and a warm meal generally communicates just as well as the poken word, especially as they are unharmed and cared for"
DM Kludde |
The pathfinders carry the defeated warriors to the shelter, where a warm fire and a warm meal indeed does wonders for their attitude.
None of the men speak any common though...
Vague Henri |
After eating, Henri pulls out the scroll he purchased and attempts to use the more commonly used symbols and motifs among the Snowmask Clan to communicate with the warriors. He looks for 'friend', and 'help' and any other useful symbols they might recognize, pointing at them and then the group.
DM Kludde |
Henri and Mogal try to communicate with the Kellid warriors, who seems to reject the concept of the pathfinders being friends. The utter some sentences, of which Mogall understand only a few words: "others not friends" "you friend with others"
