You do a very thorough search but nothing and no one seems to be on the second floor. You are almost ready to give up when a tall balding man materializes behind Idril... and stabs him in the back!
Attack roll: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30 → Damage roll: 1d4 + 1 + 3d8 ⇒ (4) + 1 + (8, 6, 3) = 22
Idril is considered flat footed
edit:
Critical confirmation check: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 → Damage roll: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
It's a terrible blow that almost kills the elf on the spot. Nontheless the magus avoids an untimely death and shouts, warning his friends of the killer in their midst.

"Rags, rags, more rags, Idril's shrill scream... OH! IDRIL'S SCREAM!" Sheela sticks her head out of the door and begins summoning.
Sheela begins casting Summon Monster 2 to summon a small air elemental next to her. Lousy line of sight!
Idril Bladesong |
Idril buckles from the vicious attack. Gravely hurt, he decides to spare nothing in defense of his life. He turns the wrath of Ankar upon his foe, channeling arcane might through the black blade as well as his own spells. The magus assails the hidden assassin.
Idril will use a point from his arcane pool as s swift action to empower Ankar. Then a full round action to use spell combat, casting Shocking Grasp defenisvely, making 2 attacks.

Valentynne |
After hearing Idril's yell, Val pulls a potion from his backpack and moves into the room to stand beside his friend, potion in hand. He's not afraid of leaving his back open to an attack, if that means his friends won't be targeted by the dangerous bald man.
Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds on Val's hand to be taken at Idril's convenience.
DM Elan Morin |
The man chuckles at Idril as the half-elf's magical sword misses him entirely.
"Still alive... but not for long!" the murderous individual exclaims. Then he steps away from Idril and lits some sort of black stick he had ready in his other hand. As a consequence, the room immediately fills with dark, thick smoke...
This smoke prevents even darkvision to work. It's similar in effect to the Fog Cloud spell
Azrael the Talon |
GM, if I understand it, at 5 feet we still are able to see our enemy, I moved making the assumption that I know or can be pointed out the general direction of the enemy.
Azrael jumps straight into the fog to seek the enemy, attempting to strike it down with his talon!
Swift action to jump into snake style, move and attack!

Vrothum, I want to move your icon but you can't attack from next to me, as you're on the other side of a wall. Also, the room the killer is in is full of smoke, so I don't know how you can actually reach him in melee.
DM Elan Morin |
Vrothum moves into the fog but cannot reach the enemy. Titus guards the stairs and the killer starts shouting:"Help! HELP!!! The murderers! The murderers are HERE! They are trying to kill ME!!! HEEELPPPPP!!!"

"Mister Wizzywoo. Can you do that whirlwind thing and clear the air?" The small elemental turns into a small whirlwind and begins flying through the fog.
I don't know if this is sufficient enough wind to disperse the cloud, but it's worth a shot.
Sheela pulls out a scroll. "Wow, he has quite the set of lungs. Try to knock him out if you can. I'll ruin his little plan."
Ahem
"He's trying to kill all of us!" Sheela screams, trying to drown out the killer's voice. "And he's hiding in his own smoke! The murderer is here!"

Oops sorry map looks different when it's on my phone lol so just retcon my action to standing guard at the stairs. Remember keep him alive we need him to answer for his crimes!
DM Elan Morin |
Sheela's summon proves to be invaluable as it dissipates the smoke with little to no effort. The man seems caught off guard by the move and by Sheela's subsequent "chanting". He curses softly before screaming even more:"HELP! The MURDERERS!!! HEEEEELPPPP!!!!"

He waits until the half-elf responds.
Val has Scarify prepared, it will change lethal damage into nonlethal. Just to get you out of dying danger.
Delaying action I guess.
Idril Bladesong |
Idril nods to Valentynne. "Thank you friend. Unpleasantness is better than death."
Idril continues the attack on the sneaky assailant, ready to unleash the held electrical spell if he should land a blow. The wily foe evades the dark bladed katana again!
Ankar +1 pool: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12 (additional +3 if foe is wearing metal armor)
Valentynne |
After hearing the half-elf's brave approval he casts his spell bestows battle scars upon Idril.
Scarify: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (1, 5) + 2 = 8
The process is painful, and converts 2d6 points of damage + 1 point per caster level (maximum +5) into nonlethal damage. If the target creature is immune to nonlethal damage, the spell fails. Damage reduction against nonlethal damage reduces the amount of damage converted. This effect counts as healing for the purpose of stopping bleed damage.
DM Elan Morin |
Not knowing what to do, Rogar loses his chance to act, while Valentynne helps cure Idril and the elf tries to stab the killer without much success.
Left with no way to retreat, the man with the knife takes another stab at Idril.
Killer vs Idril: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25 → Damage roll: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

"Mister Wizzywoo, you can exit your whirlwind form. Please look for Rogar and watch over him." The air elemental leaves the room.
Valentynne |
Val's next action will be to force feed a Potion of CMW into Idril.
Titus Minicius Parthicus |
Looking at the desperate situation I move Val and Idrill and give the Killer something a bit more angry and ticked off to swing at.

Round 3
Idril screams in pain as Valentynne's spell takes hold. He fights through the agonizing pain and then is stabbed again by the cornered killer. The magus lets out another yip of pain then stares down the foe with obvious mailice. He grips Anker with two hands and brings the still charged blade down on the man, trying to end this fight before Idril finds himself on the wrong side the River of Souls.

Sheela's magic cannot confound the evil man who just shruggs the magical effect off. Fortunately he can't do the same with Idril's magical blade as the elf stabs him and unleashes lightning through the blade and then Valentynne gives him a potion to help heal him from his injuries.

Rogar hits the man with the flatb of his blade rendering him unconscious.
Meanwhile on the outside of the dilapidated house a crowd seems to have gathered, led by none other than the zealous inquisitor of Iomedae, Ekira and brandishing torches and pitchforks...
"Murderes! Iomedae spoke and revealed the truth about your true colors to me. We heard screaming and pleas for help. Release your intended victim, come out, surender yourselves and face JUSTICE!" Ekira yells among the cheers of her angry mob of followers...
What do you do?
Sheela Kolphan |
"Good job, Rogar. Now, let's restrain him before an angry mob-"
Right on cue, everyone's favorite zealot screams for justice.
"So, this was a trap. The real killer is right here. Hopefully they heard my screams for help, as well. I'll try to vouch for our innocence, here. Search for evidence. Maybe that dagger he stabbed Idril with." She takes a look at his weapon. "Is that the dagger the other Pathfinders used?"
Sheela uses the scroll of Heroism on herself. "Alright, I'll present myself to the mob and calm them down. You guys search the killer for any extra evidence."
Sheela messes her hair a bit before flinging open the door. "Oh, thank goodness you arrived!" She seems worried and distraught. "A terrible man lured us here! He wrote a note saying the killer was here and he assaulted us as we arrived! He promised to kill us! We managed to knock him out just before you arrived." She stares Ekira down.
"Did you hear me scream for help? Where were you all this time? Wait, are you accusing me of murder? Everybody CALM DOWN!"

Let's be very clear, I am not surrendering to a angry mob and risk facing mob justice or a lynching....and as far as that priestess or inquisitor or whatever she is...if she is of my faith ...then she will know the truth.
Idril Bladesong |
Idril winces, still feeling the sting of Valentynne's healing spell. he gingerly touches the thick scar that has formed around the assassin's intitial stab into Idril's side. He pokes the new addition. "Well, someone told me once that scars build character...I do hope that's true." He winces and draws forth a wand from his pack, activating its magical energies to heal himself.
UMD: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Wand CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
The half elf nods to Titus. "I agree friend. That zealot is no friend to us and means us harm."
DM Elan Morin |
You drop the unconscious body in front of the angry mob and the inquisitor of Iomedae makes sure the man is still alive before using a quick spell to revive him:"Thanks to Iomedae! We were just in time" Ekira exclaims, while the man who just tried to kill you screams and shouts:"Help! Those murdering demon worshippers tried to kill me!!!"
Ekira nods solemnsly and speaks again:"I know poor man! Iomedae herself told me of the danger you faced and I came with these brave souls to save you and see these demon lovers face justice! I've called for the sheriff. He'll see to them!"
As summoned by Ekira words Tobias Luinn arrives to the site where you are standing and quickly assesses the situation. He looks at you, then to the mob, the man and Ekira, his face grim and concerned. As Ekira demands that he arrests you he raises an hand and silences her:"No. Not yet at least. Things seems more complicated than you'd like to believe Lady Ekira and I for one want to make sure justice is served here".
The Sheriff turns to the man who tried to kill you:"Man... what is you claim that happened here?"
"My good sheriff... Is it not clear already?" answers the would be killer "My name is Dalton Krunne, a poor tailor who lost his home in the wake of the demon's onslaught and had to relòocate here in Dawnton recently. A couple of days ago I saw these ruffians sniffing around town... I was suspicious so I tailed them and while doing so I heard them plotting to murder a young man in the name of their unholy demon-gods! I was going to warn everyone about them but unfortunately they noticed me and run after me. I hid inside that house but they tracked me down, then tried to silence me permanently! It was only thanks to these fine people that they spared my life!"
Luinn nods, his face unreadable:"I see. What do you have to say about this?" he asks to you.
You can now present the evidence you gathered until now. True rumors could help you as well. Each piece of evidence allows you to attempt a Diplomacy or Profession (barrister) check to sway the opinions of the sheriff, inquisitor, and crowd. Each piece of evidence grants a bonus on that check and, if successful, all subsequent checks as well.
Valentynne |
Val, standing at the back of the group, removes his helmet and holds it under his right arm.
A tailor? Are we now? Valentynne moves around the group, trying to see the man's buttons, perhaps they match to the one found on the murder scene.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
"Sheriff, we are willing to work with you and unravel this drama. But perhaps there can be a better place to do it than out in public? Unless you want for all the town to hear?"
Sheela Kolphan |
Sheela yawns as "Dalton Krunne" spins a tale. "You need to work on your lies, Dalton."
She produces the letter. "How odd... we received a letter from someone telling us to come here. It's the same handwriting as the letter accusing Pathfinders of murdering people in the village.."
"Dalton spins lies. We came here to rescue someone and he tried to ambush us. And once that failed, he's trying to claim innocence. But I know it won't work. Because you're smarter than that."
Can I take 10 on this? If so, I get a 20 Diplomacy check total.
Vrothum |
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 Vrothum keeps an eye out for any aggressive behavior towards his allies.
I thought you said the ones in jail were the murderers? So now we show up and conveniently for you we are the murderers? You see how ridiculous this sounds? However, as the sheriff is aware we have compiled quite a bit of evidence to make our case. Real evidence that is.
diplomacy: 1d20 ⇒ 14
DM Elan Morin |
"The point is for all the town to hear, I'm afraid. So yes, this is exactly were we you going to explain your reasons, just as mr Krunne did" the sheriff answers Valentynne... who studies Krunne's coat long enough to realize it sports the very same kind of buttons. It does not lack one though.
Sheela shows the letters to the Sheriff and he examines them, his face growing concerned as he does:"It seems like the hand is the same actually..."
Sheela needs to roll, this is a tense situation, no taking 10 here, but you can add a +4 to your roll because you presented the 3 letters
Vrothum needs to point out a piece of evidence as well. The letters were one, but you found other stuff that works as evidence, and if you think about it you also heard testimony you can use to contradict the official version of facts. Think about this: what did really happen? You have all the pieces of the puzzle at your disposal
@Rogar: that's a good question
Sheela Kolphan |
Diplomacy, Heroism, 3 letters: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 8 + 2 + 4 = 32
"As you can see, all of these letters were written by the same hand. We certainly weren't around in time to write these."
I wrote a few potential pieces of evidence we could use in the discussion tab.
Valentynne |
Only because he likes putting zealots in an awkward spot, he manifests a ring of golden light above his head, a halo, part of his celestial heritage. "Sheriff, we've had no hand in any of the murders in this town, if his claim of also being a tailor are true, that can explain why his buttons aren't missing. But his are the only buttons with that particular shape and materials, are they not?"
Diplomacy Aid: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Vrothum |
I was using the timeline as my evidence, so I’ll build off my above post with that in mind.
How long ago would you say Dalton? It would just so happen that our first victim was actually murdered somewhere else then drug to Ottos farm. You see when we found that button that looks like the one you have on, it was found near the body. The body had been strung up on a tree stripped of flesh and clothes. However very little blood was left behind. We saw tracks and drag marks. So, it couldn’t have possibly been us as the killers considering we only just arrived and you had those pathfinders already in jail.
