PFS 6–05: Slave Ships of Absalom (Inactive)

Game Master Wilmannator

At Sea Map
Map of Absalom

The metropolis of Absalom promotes commerce in its many forms, and although slavery is legal, it is increasingly common for citizens to frown on the institution. The practice becomes more questionable when an ally of the Pathfinder Society traces an attempt at supernatural surveillance through a slave. Sent as independent sleuths, the PCs must track down the source of this espionage, which takes them deep into underbelly of one of Absalom’s darkest industries.

Ok so Ibid - manacles, Amaranti - shield, Cyrus attacks gnoll 1? if that is the case then I will .... since I cannot see the MAP at work ...

Finarin takes a 5 foot step in a direction away from melee so he has a clear shot and draws his bow and nocks an arrow. Imbuing his bow with magical arcane energy, he pulls the string to his high, delicately formed cheekbone, slowly regulating his breath, he loosens towards Curtzog's Flatfooted AC

No ninja, Amaranti's action goes off in a different round, Finarin is first. Still hits at -4 anyway.

Curtzog stumbles towards the railing, an arrow lodged in his thigh (surprise round). He glowers at Finarin as he reaches for the enormous Falchion strapped to his back. Amaranti strides in next (round 1), tearing a hole in Curtzog's belly as punishment for the half-orc's efforts to arm himself.

Things are getting a little complicated, not helped by Paizo's persistent gremlins, and all these folk posting while I'm writing! Ah, that's 3 (make that 4) since I started this post. Anyway, here's our brand spanking new...

Gunari, you've jumped the gun a little on that action. I'll let you know when it comes off and what you see belowdecks (I'm assuming the heavily armed priest weighs 250 lbs or more, all told, he can always jump up and down quickly to properly break it). From your description, I'm assuming you're forgoing your reflex save to avoid falling.

Updated the campaign info, and forgot I had a picture of Captain Wardak! Here it is:
Portrait of Waheeda Wardak

And how bad are the Paizo servers today? Crazy stuff, making my life very difficult.

I also had to update Amaranti and Kaishgara's positions slightly. I'm assuming the Garundi doesn't want to stand on the rickety structure. I also updated Finarin's position to move him out of the boat and into a decent spot for molesting masts with a bow.

Cyrus giggles as he sees his friends so effectively swarm over the deck, and moves a step to the side in order to pinch the gnoll between himself and Ibid.

Supplemental initiative:

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11 Wow, the dice gods are truly conspiring to keep my NPCs grouped together!

I'm going to assume Kaishgara moved into position during the surprise round.

Alas for Cyrus, the gnoll manages to get his shield up just in time. Cackling, he strikes back![

Gnoll attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Disoriented and confused, the gnoll misses, his rusty cutlass sailing high over Cyrus's head.

Captain Waheeda Wardak spins around on the ground, and attempts to push Ibid over the railing with her still-free legs.

Captain Wardak, bull rush, prone: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (5) + 6 - 4 = 7

This provokes an attack of opportunity from Ibid only, but he's unarmed.

Ibid attack of opportunity, unarmed: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Ibid throws a punch at Waheeda Wardak, missing. Her kick goes wide, however, and Ibid easily sidesteps it.

The gnoll deckhand (gnoll 1) tries to see if Cyrus will flinch as he pokes him with his rusty cutlass.Gnoll attack, cutlass: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Critical confirm: 1d20 ⇒ 6
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Cyrus does indeed flinch, receiving a superficial but painful gash across the chest.

In the meantime, Curtzog bellows out a mighty and terrifying, "Yaaaaaarrgh!" attempting to demoralize Amaranti, moving closer to the Garundi and firing spittle at his face.

Intimidate to demoralize, DC 12: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24

Amaranti is shaken for 1 round.

Shortly thereafter, Garundi abruptly falls through the grating on the deck to the hold below. Those who can see him notice a rather sheepish grin on his face as he disappears. The crazed and drunken warpriest is lucky he is wearing a lighter armor, as he just barely manages to avoid twisting his ankle from the 10 foot drop.

The heady aroma of urine and fecal matter assaults his nostrils as he surveys the deck below. He falls through the grating just in time to see a swashbuckler-esque half-elf free a nightmarish, green-fleshed hound from its chains. As Gunaril alls in a shower of splinters, the hound rushes forwards and mauls the gnoll who had come down to get the potentially diseased slave for inspection.

Gunari notices three regular looking slaves (Qadiran, most likely, from their appearance) and one strange, green-haired gnome - all chained to the floor.

The troll-like hound leaps forward to maul the gnoll.

Troll Hound

Next up: Miro, Kaisharga, Ibid, Amaranti, Cyrus, Finarin.

F**king hell that was a monstrous combat update. Paizo dropping out on me was not pleasant. Starting to do all similar posts in Notes until their servers get it under control. I also blame Gunari for officially involving every NPC in the fight now.

Argh, I forgot about the dim lighting conditions. Should be a global 20% miss chance. Starting that in round 2. Please roll for it when you attack... unless you have darkvision or low-light vision of course! So many moving parts... thanks Gunari! ;-)

Cyrus strikes the gnoll with another precision scratch. Ibid turns to see an ever-more frustrated Cyrus still trading blows with his hyena-like foe. It's Cyrus's expertly-wielded sickle, finding every gap it can in the gnoll's defenses, against the gnolls poorly maintained but deathly-sharp cutlas. Almost absent-mindedly, Ibid swings a weighted sack and knocks the gnoll into oblivion.

As the adrenelin of initial confrontation starts to subside, the heroes hear the lilting and inspirational melodies of their resident halfling troubadour, Miro. Your spirits are lifted, your weapons seem lighter, and the song focuses your attention to achieve better effect with the blows your strike. Inspire Courage, +1 attack/damage and more.

Somehow landing clean, Gunari turns to the four bound slaves, flashes a big grin, and says "Gunari Maximoff, Chosen of the Drunken Hero, here to save Pathfinders and other slaves. Looks like you are a bit tied up for the moment... if you all can get out, great. Otherwise, anyone know where the keys are?"

He then looks up through the hole he made... "Um, guys, got a bit of as situation down here! Need a locksmith and something that can take out this ugly dog, here! Well, maybe after he eats this gnoll. And a locksmith. Definitely a locksmith."

The gnome, a female Gunari realizes, speaks up in a timid voice, "You... you know I'm a Pathfinder? How? Oh... wait, that doesn't matter for now, does it? Free me and I can help... alas, but he has the keys." The gnome points to the gnoll who is getting mauled.

Gunari has a better vantage than the gnome, and spots the key still in the padlock at the feet of the horrified slave the gnoll was preparing for transport.

Curtzog Reflex save vs DC 14

Grease from PRD:

A grease spell covers a solid surface with a layer of slippery grease. Any creature in the area when the spell is cast must make a successful Reflex save or fall. A creature can walk within or through the area of grease at half normal speed with a DC 10 Acrobatics check. Failure means it can't move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Acrobatics skill for details). Creatures that do not move on their turn do not need to make this check and are not considered flat-footed.

The investigator his swept off his feet by a woman - and not in the way he would like. With her tormentor fallen, she takes the opportunity to get to her feet.

Belowdecks, the gnoll struggles with the slavering beast that it thought was supposed to be on its side. Suposo que això és el que passa quan no alimenta la cosa!*

* Gnollish:
I guess that's what happens when you don't feed the thing!

Gnoll 2 attack trollhound: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

The kennel master moves back from the fray, and greases the area where Gunari stood talking to the strange gnomish slave. I’ve put grey squares up to represent the greases.

Gunari reflex save, DC 14: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

Gunari, alas, falls flat on his back at the unexpected lack of friction beneath him.

The great, beastly dog goes for the Gnoll’s mid section.

Trollhound attack Gnoll 2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Damage, bite: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

The gnoll has a piece of its stomach ripped out and its intestines begin to dribble from the gaping wound. Unable to deal with the horror of its own impending death, the gnoll falls unconscious. After tearing out the chunk of armored gnoll belly, the creature turns to Gunari, then to the slave in front of it…

… and decides the talkative priest that has freshly fallen to its master’s clever assault is clearly the best target. It rushes over, eagerly anticipating the flavours of its next victim. Gnoll was okay, but what doe’s this one taste like?

The combats are separate enough that I'm happy to do the end of round 2 and the beginning of round 3 together. Next up: Everybody!

Within moments of each other Cyrus watches Ibid get tripped up by the stubborn captain, and hears Gunari's cry for help from below decks. He hesitates for a split second, unsure whether to help his friend who was now prone near the railing of the boat, or leap down to Gunari's aid.

In his mind, the debate feels like minutes drag on, though in reality it is barely the blink of an eye. Convincing himself that the captain must be dealt with as quickly as possible, he slides forward and reaches out with his sickle towards her ankles.

Almost immediately, the old man remembers the captain is still handcuffed, and will have a hard time doing any lasting damage.

Hoping his companions can occupy the captain, Ibid waits for a moment before getting up, in an effort to avoid giving the captain the opportunity to attack while he stands.

Ibid will hold his action until Cyrus attempts to trip Captain Wardak, and then will stand up. First up, corrections. No AoO for being tripped when you're unarmed, and Ibid's roll actually hit.

Ibid miss chance for AoO (20%): 1d100 ⇒ 91
AoO damage, sap, nonlethal: 1d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 1 = 4

Captain Wardak reels from the blow to the head, spitting out blood and a Keleshi curse in Ibid's direction, "كانت أمك عنزة!*"

* Keleshi:
"Your mother was a goat!"

Understanding the insult, and perhaps sticking up for his friend, Cyrus steps in and puts his own leg to use, kicking Waheeda hard in the back of the knees. The ninja's ferocity taking her by surprise, the Captain of the At Sea is unable to get her feet in order and finds herself once more with planks at her back.

Not wanting to miss out on the party, Miro piles on, his semi-permanent smile spread wide across his face. Unfortunately, his dagger-like shot sword proves a less fearsome weapon than Ibid's weighted sack. Miro barely scratches the irate Captain.

Ibid miss chance (20%): 1d100 ⇒ 16

As though seeking to prove that exact point, Ibid stands once more with sap in hand. He gives it a quick twirl and a smirk appears on to his face as it comes down with a loud crack. Ibid's smile diminishes in proportion to the amount that Miro's smile grows, however, as he realize he was smashing wooden planks and not pirate heads.

Gunari's screams for help seem to amuse the deformed hound in front of him. Pinkish, foamy drool splashes onto Gunari's feet as it leers at him. The Drunken God looks favorably upon his faithful warpriest, however, and lends his rapier the strength to strike true. Cold steel pierces warm, blubbery flesh and a gout of foul smelling, pustulent blood spills forth. As true as the blow was, however, the beast does not fall.

Unfortunately, the slaves are chained such that they cannot reach each other. However, while gnome cannot reach the key in the other slave's chains, that slave certainly can. He reaches down and unlocks himself. He looks up at the horrific scene before him, fully aware that he was a split decision away from being on the menu. (Gunari's going to need some honeyed words here to convince the slave to help rather than flee from the trollhound. As you may have noticed from earlier, the gnome sucks at diplomacy - couldn't even convince a gnoll to take her upstairs first.)

Coming to his friend's aid, Finarin strides over to the gaping hole in the deck. Imbued with eldrich magic, his arrow flies true and pierces the hound's rear flank. The unholy mixture of troll and canine howls in pain and favors the elf with a toothy growl before turning back to its unwilling meal.

Next up: Amaranti, Kaishgara.

Ibid Cyrus'd me* on that miss chance. They both miss anyway, so leaving it in along with my flavor text.

Kaisharga only very narrowly misses. I see Amaranti has moved to be within reach using his lance, but not attacked. Missing post again? And it's a small technical point, Miro, but Kaisharga doesn't get +4 to hit a prone target, the prone target gets -4 AC vs melee attacks. ;-)

Okay, because it doesn't look like there's another post coming, because it is so obviously what Amaranti was trying to do based on where he was moving, because the server has already eaten one of his previous posts, because he may be going to bed now and not posting for quite a few more hours, because it is the last action of this initiative group and because I am a glutton for punishment... I'm going to assume the following happens:

Amaranti moves up behind Miro to strike at the captain of the slaving vessel.

Amaranti attack, lance: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 1 = 23
Amaranti miss chance (20%): 1d100 ⇒ 43
Amaranti damage: 1d8 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 1 = 10

Captain Wardak screams in agony as a tool best suited for use from horseback comes unexpectedly arcing out of the gloom and commotion to strike her in the side.

Amaranti, please let me know if this wasn't what you were doing and I can happily retrofit. If you wanted your arcane strike in there, too, I can add that damage in.

Captain Wardak, frustrated, bleeding and once again on the deck of her ship, curls into a ball and slips her hands beneath her legs in front of herself, drawing a potion from her belt in the same deft maneuver (I have no idea what action moving tied hands in front of yourself is, but given what you now get to do to her, I think doing both as a move action is fair enough… as always, differences of opinion welcomed on the discussion thread).

Oh, so many attacks of opportunity:

Amaranti AoO, lance: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 1 = 11

Kaisharga AoO, flank, bite: 1d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 3 + 2 + 1 = 19

Cyrus, miss chance (20%): 1d100 ⇒ 8

Aha! The dice work for me for a change!

In response to Waheeda's awkward movements, the pathfinders take the opportunity to finish her off. Amaranti’s lance goes high, but Miro and Kaishgara are both able to strike superficial blows upon the struggling sea pirate. Ibid and Cyrus line up deathly accurate attacks, but the shadows play tricks upon the vision-impaired humans and all they manage to do is to raise some extra splinters on the deck.

Gleeful, and more than a little surprised, Waheeda Wardak downs the potion (normally, this would draw an AoO also, but I don’t think any of you have combat reflexes). In the blink of an eye, she completely disappears from view.

Assuming she remains stationary, her stealth roll is at +40 - so she’s impossible to spot by any of the PCs (note the lack of perception checks made). You do likely* know which square she is in, though, but she now has total concealment from you.

* Only “likely" because there may be some other effect you’re not aware of that may have moved her out of it. Your characters don’t know this is only tier 1-2, right?

Below, the kennel master shrieks as his favorite pet is stabbed from below and shot from above. He moves into a better position to see who shot the vicious hound and throws a strange looking bag at the elf. As it flies through the air, it breaks apart and a sticky resin comes out in globules strung together in an elastic and messy web.

Thrown tanglefoot bag, 1 range increment: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 - 2 = 3

The bag, however, explodes and empties it sticky load* on the underside of the broken grating, dripping small globs of harmless glue down upon the trollhound.

* Sorry.

Ignoring the light rain splashing stickily onto its back, the malformed dog attempts to consume its evening snack.

Trollhound bite attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Trollhound crit confirm: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13 Gunari’s prone AC is 14… you are so lucky, man!
Trollhound, damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Coming close to biting the warpriests face off, the starving beast still manages to clamp down painfully upon his shoulder. The links of Gunari’s brand new chain shirt pop, bend and penetrate his flesh as the gigantic jaws close down upon him. Wrenching away, Gunari almost loses his last meal as the putrid stench of the hound’s rot-filled saliva infuses his senses.

Gunari, fort save DC 12: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

Hours, perhaps days later, Gunari will reflect upon how lucky he was to have not gotten a disease from this foul creature.

Well, there goes my lunch time and then some. I now blame Gunari and Mark Garringer!

Gunari, annoyed Te situation, and having commanded the now freed slave, turns his attention back on the trollhound. He calls upon Cayden Cailean's grace once more, imbuing his rapier with the Drunken Hero's favorite weapon with a little of the deity's power Counts as good and Magic, plus rolls twice for concealment... Do we need this down here?

"Someone go help Gunari!" Cyrus yells in frustration as soon as he sees the captain disappear. Hoping the slippery woman hasn't had a chance to move to far yet, he blindly cuts his sickle through the space she was just occupying.

The following attack and miss chances only apply if she is in fact still in I14

Attack w/flank & Inspire: 1d20 + 6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 2 + 1 = 26 for Damage: 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 1 = 6

"Watch for her footsteps on the deck in the water!" Cyrus yells to the others.

**EDIT** Cyrus'd by Cyrus! Updated.

Gunari didn't have the requisite knowledge for the trollhound, so I didn't make the roll. Acid and fire affect trolls, but they regenerate. This thing doesn't seem to be (its wounds remain wounds).

Gunari's blow strikes true, catching his tormentor in its neck (and you do indeed need to roll for dim light down here, though only the once for that attack since you take the better of the rolls as your attack roll, and then you have a miss chance with that). With one final growl, the hound gargles its own fetid blood and falls to the floor, bleeding and unconscious.

Forgot to mention that I was waiting for next round of actions to resolve Gunari's diplomatic slave action. Great roleplaying, there, +2 circumstance bonus. The creature is friendly (after all, you are liberating it) and you're asking it to render what it sees as dangerous aid (because it involves staying near the trollhound for longer).

Diplomacy, DC 20: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 5 + 2 = 20

Gunari just manages to convince the slave to do as asked, and he begins to free the gnome. She'll be free and able to act next round.

"Great work, there!" compliments the gnome, "And with this guy, too. I thought for sure he was going to leave us chained here. The name's Rilla Lavon, by the way. I'm a druid... and I am so, so, so happy to meet you!"

Above, Cyrus slices blindly at the space where Captain Wardak used to be. The air cries out in pain and then all is still. Getting bold and kicking the ground in front of him, Cyrus can feel the outline of an unconscious, manacled captain. Didn't need the second miss chance, dim light doesn't matter as much as the fact she's completely invisible. Also, did exactly the right amount of damage to take her HP total down to her nonlethal damage total. Well done on taking her alive!

Next up: Miro, Kaishgara, Ibid, Amaranti, Finarin.
