PFS 6–05: Slave Ships of Absalom (Inactive)

Game Master Wilmannator

At Sea Map
Map of Absalom

The metropolis of Absalom promotes commerce in its many forms, and although slavery is legal, it is increasingly common for citizens to frown on the institution. The practice becomes more questionable when an ally of the Pathfinder Society traces an attempt at supernatural surveillance through a slave. Sent as independent sleuths, the PCs must track down the source of this espionage, which takes them deep into underbelly of one of Absalom’s darkest industries.

"She will be returned to Mahjub Mahdi where she will no doubt be resold, probably somewhere other than Absalom," Milana replies, "What he does with her is really no concern of mine. Perhaps you could ask him ha this intentions are once you have secured the refund, if you are concerned."

Milana looks slightly confused at the attention shown for a slave girl that the pathfinders have never met.

"My friends, as long as we are here, perhaps we should take the opportunity to talk to this... slave." Gunari takes a moment to think, and continues. "Milady, would it be to forward of us to ask a moment with the young slave girl? We might be able to glean a bit of information from the lass, that would help is in our negotiations."

He turns to his companions, and says, "Of course, we'll go in there with a spell to detect magical effects active, just in case! However, as a precaution, perhaps only a couple of us should go in... maybe myself, Milo, and Ibid?"

Gunari looks smug in that he came up with this plan. 'What advantage can we gain, I don't know. But, as I was always taught, never enter into a negotiation without all of the information. Take that man back in the town near the Storval Plains. If he had asked whether the horse was lame, I would most certainly have told him. But he went on pure appearance, never checking.'

Okay that's 3 for not talking to the slave girl (or doing it later), 1 for now. I don't mind telling you that she has very little extra information to give, save for her own backstory. Returning is always a possibility and well within the bounds of what you can do in this adventure.

Given the party's general reluctance to speak with the slave girl, combined with a willingness to do so later, Milana takes the opportunity to put off the interrogation until you have more information. As she points out, if you hit a dead end, you can always return. The pathfinders elect to make their way to the slave trader, Mahjub Mahdi's store.

It is mid-afternoon by the time the pathfinders find themselves wandering easternmost part of the Coins District: Misery Row. Bordering the Merchant’s District, Misery Row is a dark and dingy place at best. For those who do not condone slavery (and for some who do), Misery Row has the overpowering, perfumed scent of sanctioned suffering. The entire sub-district is a long, winding elevated platform. It sports row after row of humanoid (and some monstrously proportioned) cages. Representatives from most major areas of Golarion can be found chained within, on display for all to see. The Eastern reaches of Golarion are very disproportionately represented.

For those who walk the platform freely, they display criminal and gang affiliations openly. Not one guard takes the slightest notice, even when minor crimes are committed right in front of them. The pathfinders witness a heavy-set merchant having his purse stolen by an athletic street thug on a far platform, right in front of a guardsman. The guard doesn’t even shout ”stop”. It seems the reputation that led to the police of Misery Row being called “The Token Guard” is well deserved.

It is not long before you find the many-windowed storefront of Mahdi’s Chattel. The slave trader’s storefront is perhaps one of the most lavishly appointed along Misery Row, though it is certainly not the largest. A sign hanging out the front identifies the store as “Mahdi’s Chattel - Absalom’s Finest”. Heavy curtains made from plush fabrics adorn each of the windows, though one window has been smashed in. As the pathfinders close in, they can read a small painted “closed” sign hanging from the door - which rests slightly ajar. The door shows signs of scratches and damage to the wood near the lock.

Cautiously, the group begins to enter the store (or peers through the crack left in the door):

Mahdi’s Chattel is pleasantly decorated. An Andoren rug lies over the polished wooden floor of the entryway, and a small decorative table holds a curious stone statue. The eastern half of the room is in slight disarray, apparently from light renovations that are nearly complete.

The stone statue stands almost 2 feet tall, weighs 15 pounds, and has simian features, massive horns, and a long tail. It is also completely unimportant unless you wish to use it as an improvised weapon. What about the rug, I ask you, why don’t we get more juicy information about the rug?

DC 20 Knowledge (geography or religion):
For no reason at all that I can tell, you know that the statute is a Bekyar tribal representation of Angazhan. Well done, you.

A work table in the center of the display parlor conceals a heavy, polished stone with a 4-inch-diameter steel ring attached to the top, providing an anchor for manacle chain.

Please place yourselves in the leftmost room (or outside of it) as appropriate on this map: Mahdi's Chattel Map. You can stand on the squares with the benches drawn in them (C2, C3, E2 and E3). The entrance is actually on the southern side, too, but there was only room for your portraits up top.

Gunari's voice echoes around the empty show room for a moment. From behind the closed door, the adventurers can hear a gruff "What was that?" followed by muted voices, shuffling and banging. Finally, everyone hears a muffled, "Now shut it, or you'll get it!" before the door opens.

Standing near the doorway are two cowled and shady individuals, who regard the pathfinders with contempt. Behind them, a hugely muscular half-orc with a greatsword strapped to his back holds a Keleshi merchant up by his lapels. Your first thought is Lort, but this half-orc's head is clean shaven, and his body is covered in tattoos (at least, what you can see beneath his scale mail is). The merchant has a braided beard, wears his slick hair pulled back and is struggling to breathe.

On the ground, the group sees a red liquid pooling at the half-orc's feet. Their first thought is blood, but the broken shards of bottle and a fermented aroma mingling with the oily scents of Mahdi's Chattel reveal it to be wine.

"Back off, friends," says the half-orc in the same gruff voice that was heard earlier, "I have no beef with you. We have been protecting Mahjub here from beatings for a month. Now he owes the Sanguine Beast our fee, or we owe him a month's worth of beatings." He smiles at his own perceived cleverness.

"Now, be on your way before we decide we owe you too!" The big half-orc, still holding the merchant up with one hand, pulls out a heavy mace to accentuate his meaning.

Picture of Mahjub Mahdi here.

Well, since Gunari decided to announce his presence… thought I might as well react to it. Finarin moved inside as Gunari was talking (since I control him, mwa ha ha). The remainder of the pathfinders begin outside. We are not in combat as yet, so do feel free to move into the shop - just make sure to post about what you do and say so I can have the NPCs (and his crew) respond appropriately.

"Whoa whoa whoa, hang on just a second, this chump owes you money too?". Cyrus says, walking into the building. He takes a deep breath as he looks around the room. He non chalantley picks something from the room up, inspects it for value, and puts it in his pocket.

"This bum hasn't paid us for the last THREE shipments we have sent him. So I'd say he has owed us money for a bit longer than you." Cyrus leans against a wall, doing his best to exude a calm demeanor. "Why don't you wait outside until we get our " he clears his throat with a smirk, "pound of flesh first. Then he is all yours."

My interpretation of the rules mechanics here:
You'll first need a bluff check to see if he believes your story. Then, after a little more conversation (1 minute of in-game) I'll let you all decide if you want an intimidate or diplomacy check. Intimidate might be easier, but its effects are temporary and the maximum attitude you can achieve is "friendly". Feel free to decide which you prefer or I can infer it from context.

Rolls:
Cyrus bluff: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Half-orc sense motive: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20

Wow, just wow. Not at all what I expected.

The half-orc lets Mahjub fall to the floor so that he may turn to face the trio fully. He eyes the three pathfinders menacingly.

"Slavers, are you? A priest of Cayden Caileen, an elf who looks like he'd rather be wading through a sewer than standing in this shop, and whatever hybrid freakshow it is you're supposed to be?" He eyes Cyrus's sickle and chain shirt skeptically then slaps the haft of his mace into his palm in a threatening manner, "Best be explaining yourselves. Right. Now."

"Before this gets violent, let's explore our options. We have no quarrel with you, we just need some information from the creep behind you there. How much does he owe you? Maybe if we buy his debt he will be much more, amicable to answering our questions. Of course if it is too much, maybe I will give you a bonus on your collection if you gather a few more bits of info for us... You seem exceptionally smart and... Capable."

"I didn't hear no explanation. No decent one anyways," the half-orc doesn't change his menacing stance, though he does stop patting the mace against his hand when Cyrus mentions buying the debt, "What he owes is between 'im and us. Now, 'less you want to find out why they call this Misery Row..."

His two compatriots snigger slightly, and place gloved hands upon the hilts of their shortswords.

I'm waiting for some more players to weigh-in before making any intimidating or diplomatic rolls (looking like diplomacy from your change of tack). Nice work so far on the mending of bridges, Cyrus... but after your lie, you get the impression it'll be tricky for you alone to sway the half-orc from beating down on Mr. Mahdi.

Miro steps into the shop, having heard the majority of Cyrus's smooth-talking. "Hey there, friends. My friend here tries his best, but tends to confuse his words and not understand the situation. Now me, I understand perfectly well. We need some info on a slave from this one. After that, he's all yours. Of course, our questioning will need to be discrete, so I'd have to ask you to step outside. For just a few moments, of course. No big deal. And we might have a tip for you at the end, for your generosity and cooperation." He takes out a gold coin and flips it, catching it in his other hand with a wink before tossing it to the half-orc.

The thugs stand down, taking hands off weapons as the half-orc steps forward expectantly, hand out to receive his payment. Unlike his goons, however, he does not relinquish his hold on his mace.

Gunari carefully takes a tankard off his belt, and sets it on the counter. He then carefully does the same with a second one.

"I can see that you are obviously an intelligent sort, one that is not swayed by honeyed words, but by logic. What say we have a little drink here, either Cayden Cailean's own brew, or perhaps a finger or two of whiskey? I am certain that we can come up with an equatable transaction if we all stay calm. "

"Ha!" laughs the half-orc, "Fine. You say you have business with this man and it is more pressing than mine, then have him. It can serve as a lesson to him - with our protection withdrawn, all kinds of folk can come in here and make his life a misery."

The half-orc turns to Mahjub, "You hear that? You should have paid up. Now these people will have their way with you!" He punctuates his sentence by kicking the merchant in the ribs. The group departs with Gunari's booze in hand, leaving a very grateful and only slightly bruised Mahjub Mahdi shaking their hands.

"Thank you, thank you!" he says, visibly relieved to have the street thugs out of his shop, "Abadar be praised that you arrived in time. That Mezuk may have killed Mahjub this time. Please, come in to Mahjub's office that we may talk." Mahjub ushers the pathfinders into the back room.

This large office doubles as a private parlor for Mahjub Mahdi to conduct his legal but objectionable business. The room’s furnishings consist of a round table with two comfortable chairs, a desk with a metal-banded strongbox beneath it, and a refreshment cart. Two paintings hanging on the north wall both depict the bustling harbor of Katheer.

Mahjub pats the strongbox reassuringly before turning to face the group. "So, what can Mahjub Mahdi, finest slaver in Absalom, do for you good fellows?"

Miro winces only slightly as the half-orc kicks the slaver, keeping his friendly grin in place through it all. If the half-orc wanted to rough up the despicable man a bit before leaving, Miro was by no means of a mood to interject. The fact that he was leaving was the important part.

After the thugs leave, he nods to his fellows, thankful for their assistance with assessing and dealing with the situation. He had gotten the ball rolling, but they had set it rolling straight and true.

Miro's cheerful demeanor remains, but is a bit more sharp and pointed. He has no love for slavery, so hopes to end this housecall relatively quickly. "It seems the finest slaver in Absalom can be roughed up by a group of petty thugs. How fare the lesser slavers, I wonder?" He chuckles, his green eyes never leaving the man. "I jest, of course. It appears Lady Fate has smiled upon us and you this day. Let us hope that she smiles upon our meeting. My friends and I are in need of some information about a slave you sold to Lady Silviana Dimora. One Atlag, if I recall correctly. It seems this slave brought about quite a scandal. What do you know of it?"

Miro has no reason to believe the man will not lie, so he watches his face, looking for tell-tale gestures, quivers in the voice, not meeting the eyes, anything to indicate the man is being untruthful.

There is quite a bit of rolling for diplomacy required in this encounter. The nature of PbP makes it quite difficult to make these multiple roles at appropriate junctures as the roleplaying is going on. Let me know if you approve of my methods below for rolling it through. I hope you don't mind me taking a little artistic license with Miro to ensure this next conversation doesn't take a week.

Mahjub Mahdi leans back as Miro asks his question, a smile slowly spreading on his face. He rubs his hand through his oiled-back hair and plays with his ponytail a while before twirling the excess grease into the tips of his beard.

"Good, good friends! Mahjub would be happy to help you! Mahjub has nothing to conceal - his associates, however, are a different matter. Mahjub doesn't know of any scandal, but he has no wish to upset his clients. For a nominal fee, to such good friends, Mahjub could see his way clear to telling you all about who sold Atlag to Mahjub for... say... a mere four hundred gold measures. Call it a special price for special friends!" at the last, Mahjub makes a grand open hug gesture, before running both hands again through his hair while waiting for Miro's response.

Sense motive result :
Miro is certain he is not being lied to. He does, however get a hunch that the right amount of buttering up and convincing will get the information for much cheaper - maybe even for free.

Miro explains that the slave was being scried upon, and that this has caused significant embarrassment for the Dimora family.

Miro diplomacy to make helpful, DC 12: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

"Mahjub is truly sorry to hear about such an incident. While Mahjub is innocent of any wrongdoing in this, it still touches his heart. Very well, two hundred gold for special friends who have such a special problem." Mahjub rubs some loose drips into his beard, trying to appear as if deep in sympathetic thought.

Miro further explains that there was an incident where the scrying was discovered at a very influential noblewoman's house. He goes on to say that the incident has been kept very quiet up until now, but would spread like wildfire should it become known. The name Mahjub Mahdi may be spoken of in such gossip, and not in a positive light.

Miro diplomacy to convince, DC 20: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

Mahjub sits forward and lowers his voice, "Okay, okay, no need to be so loud," he rapidly runs his hands through his hair, "Mahjub will tell you what it is you need to know. There will be no talk of Mahjub helping with espionage on Mahjub's clients!" The last statement is almost a question.

"This slave, Atlag, was sold to Mahjub by a supplier that Mahjub has had few and not so regular dealings with. She is captain of a ship called, At Sea (it is good name, but not translate to Taldan very well). Captain's name is Waheeda Wardak, and more recently she is using same yellow sails used by the Okeno pirates. Mahjub sells her slaves to Lady Silviana and other nobles in Absalom. Mahjub is expecting another shipment on the morrow. Wardak and her ship should be already docked, or docking tonight."

Mahjub twirls his ponytail almost into a bun before straightening it. He sighs, and at length continues reluctantly, "Captain Wardak, she... well, she sent Mahjub a letter telling Mahjub to expect an enslaved Pathfinder with the usual shipment of slaves."

Mahjub slumps slightly and looks to the assembled group, still playing with his hair, "Is that to be all?"

That a slaver captain would sell the slave didn't translate well. The pirate must be an intermediary for someone else, or Miro was missing something from the conversation.

Miro's eyes widen at the mention of a Pathfinder being included in the new shipment of slaves.

"Master Mahjub, would it be possible that you know which slave is a Pathfinder?"

Assuming that line of questioning doesn't require follow-up.

Mahjub, we appreciate your assistance in this matter. Unfortunately, there still seems to be the question of the slave, Atlag, herself. Right now she is quarantined, kept away from anything at all. I am sure Lady Silviana has better uses for her gold than a servant that can do practically nothing that has to be kept under watch. Perhaps you can assist in this small matter? Would it be possible for Master Mahjub to find a new home for this woman?"

After a few impatient taps of his quill on the open journal page, Ibid voices a quick interjection, hoping to not derail Miro's line of questioning. "Excuse me, Master Mahjub. What is the going rate for a slave, such as Atlag?"

Miro Ammars wrote:
That a slaver captain would sell the slave didn't translate well. The pirate must be an intermediary for someone else, or Miro was missing something from the conversation.

I'm not sure what the confusion is, but apologies if it wasn't clear: the slaves get shipped in on a boat (by Captain Wardak) and sold to Mahjub Mahd, who then sells the slaves to his clients (who are primarily nobles in Absalom). Think of Captain Wardak as a supplier and Mahjub Mahdi as an importer / distributer... to completely dehumanize the whole horrid business.

The slaver addresses Miro first, "Mahjub has not yet met slaves, so he does not know which is Pathfinder. Mahjub assumes this will be easy to tell - these Pathfinders do not look like typical slave. You good fellows could always ask, if you get the opportunity."

Mahjub reaches for some pomade on his desk before continuing. "As for slave sold to Lady Silviana, Atlag, it is indeed regrettable that she is not of use anymore. Mahjub has terms and conditions that all sales are final, and it was not Mahjub's fault that slave was being spied upon. Mahjub does not give refunds any more than he asks for more money if slave turns out to be pregnant. Is luck of draw."

As the only Sovereign Court PC, I would really like Finarin to have a word in on this topic before making a roll. He said he's back in action, so I'll wait a little while for him to post.

"As Mahjub has said," the merchant turns to Cyrus as he runs a smattering of pomade through his ponytail, achieving a rather stiff and sharp point at its end, "Shipment is due tomorrow. Ship will have docked or will be waiting to dock tonight. Mahjub knows little more about Waheeda Wardak. She is supplying Mahjub of high quality slaves, appropriate for Mahjub's high quality clients, Lady Silviana included. She is not Mahjub's regular supplier, but Mahjub never turns down a good deal - or good quality slaves." Mahjub shrugs as if to say of Mahjub, Who can blame him?

"Regarding cost of slave, it is private matter between Lady Silviana and Mahjub. Why, do you like to purchase slave from Mahjub? Mahjub can give special price for such good friends as have saved him," the greasy slaver rubs his fingers along his beard greedily.

Gunari, having watched this whole interaction, interjects on the issue of Atlag, "More to the point, Master Mahjub, I assume that we can tell Lady Silviana's people that you will be giving her a full refund for the purchase price of the slave Atlag? As honest businessmen, we both know that our reputations are more important than any small amount of coin. We also know that discretion can be nearly important as well.

"Now, I would guess that you would not want the details of this transaction to become widely known, so we would be willing to show discretion on our side as well. I think that it would be appropriate that you refund the sale price, with a written apology to Lady Silviana. We can all agree that knowledge of this transaction does not have to become common knowledge."

Note that Gunari's got a pretty decent Sense Motive. The tone of the above was supposed to be positive... that he's offering advice to a fellow businessman. It was not meant to be hostile. That being said, I will defer to your choice of roll that is needed/

Yay! Thanks Finarin. Great work, there. If you're ever in Houston, get in touch. We can sink a few beers.

This is quite a complex interaction, and there are some dice rolls called for. Please bear with me while I make them before roleplaying Mahjub Mahdi's responses.

Social rolls:

Rolls for getting the refund:
Allowing Finarin an assist here - i'm not so mean as to make him do the primary roll. ;-)

Finarin diplomacy assist: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7
Gunari diplomacy assist: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Miro diplomacy, DC 20: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 9 + 2 = 24

Rolls for getting the list of Mahjub's other clients:
Also allowing Finarin the assist here, especially since he raised the point!
Finarin diplomacy assist: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (14) + 0 = 14
Gunari diplomacy assist: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Miro diplomacy, DC 25: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 9 + 2 + 2 = 18

Intimidate roll from Cyrus
Cyrus did say he was willing to try intimidating the merchant if things did not go their way.

Cyrus intimidate, DC 20: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Phew! Made it. Also, some fantastic roleplay here guys. I really wanted to add in some bonuses to those rolls for such a good job. Unfortunately, though, PFS is quite strict on playing things as written using RAW. If it was my home game, I wouldn't even have rolled. Really well done.

Mahjub runs both hands through his long black hair, exhaling deeply at the barrage of advice and demands. Eventually, he raises his oil-covered hands in an I give up gesture.

"Very well, very well. Mahjub knows when he is out-foxed. As the saying goes, 'When a behir is at your door, don't pretend you are a dragon'. Mahjub will arrange for refund to Lady Silviana. Majordomo Milana can tell Solvius Salbus to make arrangements for Atlag's return. Mahjub will give Lady Silviana a credit..." Mahjub Mahdi regards the stony-faced pathfinders, "Mahjub means, Lady Silviana will get full refund in gold measures."

Mahjub exhales again and reaches into his robes to produce a small brass key. He puts it in the strongbox, and pulls out a ledger. "Is in shorthand, but Mahjub will tell Lady Silviana's friends how to translate. This is full list of slaves sold by Captain Waheeda Wardak to Mahjub and Mahjub's clients who bought slaves, and when. Lord Elf, as Mahjub has said, Captain Wardak is not Mahjub's regular supplier. She is only infrequent seller of slaves. Mahjub buys slaves directly from her ship when it is moored at the docks.

"So, you have all information Mahjub has to give. Mahjub hope it helps. Now, Mahjub must ask that new friends be keeping this information and the fact that Mahjub has shared it to their selves. It is not to be doing to be sharing such things."

Mahjub holds his head in his hands, his index fingers slowly slicking the hair near his temples back.

The ledger lists eight slaves purchased from Captain Wardak, each of whom was then sold to a different noble household in Absalom. The specifics of this list and what to do it are not within the boundaries of this scenario, but showing the list to Venture-Captain Valsin or Lady Darchana certainly is! Well done, Finarin.

Gunari gives the slave-seller a look of shock. "Why, of course we shall keep this between ourselves. It would be untoward for businessmen such as ourselves to reveal such secrets!"

sense motive to see if that's all that Mahjub has: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10. Assuming that is it, Gunari will make his way out the door. More relaxed now, he'll make a show of taking a hit from his whiskey flask, but not offering it to the slaver.

FYI - Gunari will start taking '10' on his assist rolls.

1 Do we have any more questions?

2 Do we leave Mahjub or take him with us?

3 Do we report to Venture captain before proceeding?

Mahjub nods to Gunari in thanks. "If you are not to be buying anything from Mahjub, Mahjub had best get his shop back in order. Thank you again, friends, for saving Mahjub and then giving him the opportunity to make things right with Lady Silviana."

So, guys, feel free to move it along from here. Happy for you to head to Valsin's or Darchana's.

To answer part of Finarin's post:
2. He will not come with you willingly.
3. You are pretty sure you don't have the right to search any ships that are docked at the harbor (or know how to find a specific ship, especially if it isn't yet docked) and that barging in and doing so anyway would be considered illegal... so, yeah, you'll need to speak to someone first. Valsin or Darchana.

**EDIT** In hindsight, the amount of OOC suggests that I should have done this mostly in the discussion tab. Sorry. Please keep it in game - and I'll try to do the same.

Interesting. Never found that line before... and I've looked for it. But there it is. No big deal, thanks for the information. I'll be using it!

Once everyone has left the place (Gunari sees no value in bringing the slaver with), he says, "So, we have a couple of places we need to go. First, we should go tell what's her name, the majordomo, that Lady Silviana should expect a full refund. Then, we should visit the Venture-Captain, and let him know of our progress, and of the enslaved Pathfinder. I am not sure that we need to visit her loftiness, Lady Darchana, but perhaps Venture-Captain Valsin will instruct us otherwise.

"We'll also need to know when the slave ship is coming, and to which berth... unless I missed something. That, and I think my flask is empty... how did that happen *hic*"

I think you might be right Finarin, if we don't give a mid-investigation report to our illustrious venture captain, we will likely get chewed out for it. Though I feel pretty sure we will get chewed out for giving him the mid-investigation report as well, though the society having the information on other slaves who may be similarly scryd would be valuable. Tired of the covered stench of human (and humanoid) servitude, the pathfinders wipe their wine soaked feet off on Mahjub's Andoran rug and leave his shop. They elect to return to Venture-Captain Valsin to report their findings. The shrewd man is unusually pleased with their report, even praising them on handling matters delicately and avoiding a violent conflict with the half-orc. The group is shocked when he apologizes for forcing them to endure and abide by slave traffickers, though he does add that it is legal in Absalom, despite many vocal opponents, and that slave traders who operate within the law are not to be harmed or interfered with. "This Captain Wardak, however..."

Valsin suggests that the best course of action would be to head to Lady Darchana's estate and beg an audience, "She will be most interested to hear your report and she will be best situated to pull any required strings to allow you to complete your mission. Lady Darchana will no doubt have some additional requests to make of you."

If anyone enquires, Valsin says that he will see to it the Majordomo Milana is informed of the arranged refund, but that Finarin may wish to pay a follow up visit to ensure it all went smoothly once Lady Silviana has returned.

It is late afternoon by the time the pathfinders find themselves back in the Petal District. The beautiful, fresh perfume of the neighborhood's flowers is a stark contrast to the oily, sweaty perfumes of Misery Row. Lady Darchana is clearly of higher status than Lady Silviana. Her house is farther up Aroden's Hill. The walls of her estate are taller, and composed of polished stone rather than just fieldstone. The magically inclined of you notice that many of the plants in her expansive estate grounds have arcane or alchemical uses in addition to their aesthetic value.

A doorman, who reminds the group of Pavo, greets them as they approach the house. He quickly confirms the pathfinders' identities, and escorts them into the three-story residence, noting that Lady Darchana has been expecting them. There, the estate manager, Jemina, leads them to the upstairs study.

The walls of the study are inset with bookshelves that are brimming with texts of all varieties. A large drawing table in the middle of the room bears an unrolled map of the Inner Sea region. At the far end of the study stands an impressive darkwood desk, and seated behind it is a woman dressed in midnight-blue robes. Her
piercing gray eyes look expectantly at Jemina.

The estate manager softly clears her throat and announces, “Senior Lesser Councilwoman, Archdean of the Arcanamirium, Second Spell Lord of Absalom, Lady Darchana of House Madinani, please receive these agents of the Master of Spells Aram Zey of the Pathfinder Society.”

Lady Darchana beckons with a short hand movement, “Pathfinders, join me. That is all, Jemina.” She folds her hands together and waits for Jemina to close the door behind her, then continues. “After my conversation with Master Zey, he agreed by necessity to keep the details that were passed on to you to a minimum. I am keenly interested to hear what you were able to learn based on what you were provided.”

As Lady Darchana utters the last sentence, she focuses all of her attention on one of the Pathfinders. This is supposed to be selected at random, but due to the vagaries of PbP, it will be the next player to post!

Lady Darchana listens intently while maintaining enigmatic but not unfriendly demeanor. One of the others tries to interrupt, but she puts a finger to her lips and says, “Please wait your turn."

Thanks Finarin! The proper form of address is "Your Ladyship", but since you're a lord it may be different. Depends on your relative standing really - so probably "Your Ladyship". "Lady Darchana" is fine, too.

Lady Darchana gets Amaranti to also relate the story (feel free to post what Amaranti said), trying to elicit more details. When she is satisfied she taps her long, manicured fingers against her mouth in thought.

"An Okeno pirate captain? Captain Wardak of the At Sea.” she nods her head, a brief smile passes her lips. “Yes, that would stand to reason.” She flips open a ledger sitting on her desk that bears the seal of the harbormaster and begins scanning the pages, “When I became aware of the eavesdropping handmaiden, using my own magic I was able to follow the arcane trail back to it’s origin. I only got a brief glimpse of the heavily veiled perpetrator, but based on the distance and direction, I knew the culprit was on Stonespire Island—somewhere underground on the island at any rate, with a powerfully enchanted mirror. The Okeno pirates’ base of operations is a city on that island, and the Fleshfairs may be the largest slave markets on all of Golarion. It is a cunning place through which to move these sensored slaves.” Her hand finally comes to rest in the ledger. At Sea, here we are. It has been to Absalom two other times in the last three months. According to this, however, it has been marked with a bounty. ‘Failure to fully declare cargo value for taxation.’” She clicks her tongue loudly. “Excellent. You said Mahjub Mahdi was expecting another shipment from the At Sea tomorrow? If it hasn’t already docked, it’ll be anchored outside the Ship’s Graveyard, waiting for a pilot. We cannot allow those slaves to make it to the Docks unaccompanied! I trust I count on you to help?”

When the Pathfinders respond in the affirmative, Lady Darchana explains that by law, a ship like the At Sea must have a Pilot’s Guild member bring it in through the hazardous Ship’s Graveyard.

"Excuse me please, I must follow up on a few things," says Lady Darchana, "Please enjoy some refreshments while you wait."

About 15 minutes later, Lady Darchana returns, “I have spoken with a contact at the Harbormaster’s Grange. There is an outstanding docking request for a ship called Kat Season, which is likely our ship with a flimsy disguise.” She writes out a letter, seals it in wax with her seal, and hands it to Finarin, “Carry this note to the Harbormaster’s Grange—it authorizes the inspector to provide you with a rowboat and a pilot. So long as you can confirm the ship’s identity, you are legally free to claim the bounty yourselves.”

Reading the note, Finarin sees that the bounty on the At Sea is 725 gp.

She returns to her desk, eyeing everyone in the room as a school mistress might survey her class. "Your aid in this matter is much appreciated. Do you have any final questions for me before you depart?"

"Your Ladyship," Ibid begins, removing his weatherworn hat in motion of practiced deference. To the old man's frustration, the effect of the placating gesture is lessoned by the resultant tangle of knotted hair spilling in a messy torrent from its confinement beneath the hat. "We will do everything in our power to be sure the At Sea is found and not allowed to ply the waters beyond the Flotsam Graveyard unaccompanied."

"As for this Okeno pirate captain, Waheeda Wardak, must she be taken alive once the At Sea is identified? We can endeavor to take the ship before ever allowing it to cross the Flotsam Graveyard, but these types of plans have a tendency of getting messy, and might make it difficult taking this Waheeda Wardak alive.

"I do not want to be rude, but I would like to make a few notes while the facts are still fresh in my mind." Ibid's journal
1. Venture-Captain: Ambrus Valsin
2. Master of Spells: Aram Zey
3. (Her Ladyship) Lady Darchana (Archdean of the Arcanamirium): dinner party, guest's handmaiden w/ previously unknown scrying sensor

11. At Sea: Vessel. Currently disguised as the ship, Kat Season?
11. Jemina: Lady Darchana's estate manager

Task A: Learn origins of Lady Darchana's servant, investigate and learn the source of the scrying sensor.

[b]"As for Waheeda Wardak, no one will lose any sleep were she to slip off this mortal coil. However, she has much information that would be of use to me and the Pathfinder Society. Her acquisition of an enslaved Pathfinder in particular raises many questions tha require answers. I have my own lines of inquiry that I wish to pursue. If she does happen to perish, I would ask that you salvage as many notes from her cabin as you possibly can."

Lady Darchana brings her attention around to Amaranti, "It is a strong suspicion that I have. The description of the two ships match, and the words 'AT SEA' may be found at the center of 'K-AT SEA-SON'. If it has yellow sails and an enslaved Pathfinder aboard, you'll know you have your ship."

"Now, is there anything more?"

Skipping forwards just a little to this so that Finarin can reply at his leisure. Please continue to respond to Lady Darchana.

When the pathfinders are leaving, Lady Darchana raises her voice just a little, "Lord Moonstep, if you would be so kind as to remain behind."

Finarin:
Once the other pathfinders have gone, Lady Darchana crosses the room and ensures the door is closed. In a soft, calm voice she begins, "I have spoken at length with one Lady Gloriana Morilla, who has demonstrated considerable ambition in Absalom and abroad. Among her strengths is her dedicated and talented corps of agents whose virtues she has praised at length. I have had few opportunities to see these agents in action, but consider me tentatively impressed. I would request a favor while you are at the Harbormaster’s Grange, and I trust you might complete it for me with discretion as a sign of good faith between your patron and us. Find and remove the docking certificate for the At Sea, then destroy that certificate when you have the chance. It is perhaps not the easiest of feats, but you have proven your resourcefulness."

She pauses in thought for a moment before adding, "You may seek aid in this task, but I ask that you keep it as private as possible. Only seek help from an individual that you trust completely.

Please reply in a spoiler. Happy for everyone else to read, but it keeps it "in private".

Don't stare, don't stare, don't stare... Well say something if you are going to stare...

...

Cyrus stumbles over this thoughts, and somehow manages to keep his mouth shut for the most part, letting his companions do the talking. While Lady Darchana is no regal Aasimar paladin, or sultry feline, she is not hard on the eyes. However her wealth and apparent power seem to have an additional pull that poor Cyrus' wasn't prepared for.

Well I guess this could have been more awkward, at least I didn't make the society look foolish... He says, somewhat relieved that he didn't in fact speak, as the group prepares to leave.

We will do our best to bring the captain back to you, so you can interrogate her, maybe even find a way to bring the public eye to the blight that is slavery... He says as he is walking out the door with the group.

His heart races a bit once he realizes that he said that out loud, suddenly nervous to be speaking to someone of such social status and influence.

Ok, just jumped right in there. Mind waiting for your mind to catch up to your heart there, self?

I get the feeling the lady's heart would flutter more from that information than a bouquet of roses..

You said that out loud... crap I said that out loud... why does that keep happening?

Cyrus finishes moving quickly out of the house as his heart rate picks up even more, hopeful the lady didn't hear, and he didn't embarrass the group...

Miro suppresses a snicker at Cyrus' expense. He couldn't blame the young human, the Lady was a lovely sort, but probably out of any of their league. He moves to follow the others out, anxious to proceed to the next phase of their plan.

Spoiler:
In Barney Stinson voice, "Challenge accepted"

Finarin reruns to his seat and listens stoically to Lady Darchana's request. His brow furrowed, he contemplates his response quickly.

"Lady Darchana, I am ... truly humbled at the faith that you have shown in my friends and me. My utmost goal is to please you in all that you have requested of me ... but my Lady, this is a most ... precarious task you have laid out for me. I posses many unique ... skills, but this task might prove daunting to say the least. I however am grateful in the trust that you have placed in us. My friends have the acumen ... essential in accomplishing this task. Rest assured, I will act with ... discretion and this task will be accomplished.

My Lady, it has truly been an ... honor to serve. Should you have a need that arises in the future, I pray that you ... reflect on the service that we were all to happy to provide you."

Finarin rises from his chair, bows his head, and rejoins the other Pathfinder in the hallway.

Friends, I apologize for the secretive nature of my conversation with the Lady. Know that my ... trust has, and always will be with you all fully. Forgive me as I am not at liberty to discuss these .... matters with you.

"Thank you, Cyrus," says Lady Darchana as Cyrus pauses at the door to address her, "I have every confidence that you will perform this task admirably. However, not all of my peers would agree that slavery is a blight. They would have me say that there are reasons of industry, economy and indentured (contractual) servitude, among others, to consider. None of those rationales, however, address the bare, absurd and disgusting realities of owning another sentient being."

Lady Darchana seems to catch herself, straightens her satin gown, and looks back up at Cyrus, "I warn you, all of you, not to exceed your remit in this matter. The public eye is exactly what we wish to avoid with this scandal. There will be other times and opportunities to address the injustices that are condoned within the borders of Absalom. This incident will indeed provide excellent ammunition for that cause, but it must be used appropriately."

At Cyrus's last comment, Lady Darchana cocks her head slightly, "I'm sorry, Cyrus, I didn't catch that. I will assume it was not addressed to me. Fare thee well." Cyrus is not sure whether she genuinely didn't hear it when his thoughts spilled once more onto his tongue, or pretended not to hear in order to spare him embarrassment.

Finarin:
Lady Darchana looks genuinely pleased. "Thank you, Lord Moonstep. That is most reassuring. When this is all over, I will indeed reflect upon the services you have provided. Lady Morilla, it appears, has chosen her members well. Peace and prosperity to all. Fare thee well."

With the remit from Lady Darchana in hand, the Pathfinders make their way to the Docks. It is a long walk, and the hustle and bustle of Absalom’s Coins District seems undiminished by the fading sun. Torches are the least of the illuminations that light up the District That Never Sleeps*: continual flame poles, enormous braziers, a few bazaars with daylight enchantments, wandering apprentices casting and recasting dancing lights to augment the permanent ones constantly on display, druidic faerie fire and any number of other magical illuminations brighten the countless shops, taverns, dancing halls and restaurants. As the Pathfinders leave the district, one of the black-robed Time Callers passes them, booming ”Eight O’Clock and all is we-ell!”

* Sorry.

The sun has well and truly set over the western horizon by the time the group arrives at the Docks District and makes their way to the Harbormaster’s Grange. Despite the undertones of rotting fish and other garbage, the salty scent of the sea is a welcome relief from the overpowering, many-layered stench of the Coins.

The Inspection and Pilots’ Office of the Harbormaster’s Grange is cramped and perfumed by a particularly smelly bowl of salted fish stew that’s cooling on one of its several desks. Ledgers and loose papers occupy most of the horizontal surfaces in the office, and a bookshelf on the southern wall sags under the weight of heavy files.

At present only one inspector is on duty. The sleepy-looking halfling woman sits up, covers a yawn, and says, “Welcome to the Harbormaster’s Grange. I’m Inspector Second Class Lilia Ginsi. How may I be of service?”

Cyrus is lost in thought as they walk through the entertainingly lit Coins district. His thoughts are oddly drawn to the image of an armored vulture wielding a crossbow as the time caller booms out his announcement.

Armored vultures? Where did that come from...

As they walk, he exchanges some pleasantries with each of the pathfinders, even managing to get Finarin to chuckle at one of his awkward jokes, though he wasn't quite sure if it was a polite laugh, or genuine humor.

As they enter the harbormaster's office, Cyrus hangs back behind the group, determined to keep a low profile. Thankfully the low class nature of the docks helps him to feel right at home, doing his best to remain forgettable.

GM Damo:

Edit: Should have given this more flavor, or at least explanation, Finarin passed me a note (via PM) to help him with a certain, task that was given him.

Cyrus waits patiently for the opportune moment while the sleepy harbormaster is distracted, and picks a particular certificate from the desk.

Sleight of Hand to steal the At Sea docking certificate: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 9 + 2 = 28 I am certain the vanity affects this roll... to a T!

Edit:

GM Damo:
I had poster's regret and felt it important to add a little more explanation... If you have already read your spoiler, please read it again.

Before we proceed, do we need anything supply wise - i.e. manacles? When we are ready:

"Well met Inspector Ginsi. We have a ... request from a most important friend."

Finarin hands her the sealed note from Lady Darchana.

CLW: 0 charges left (0 wands), CMW: 43 charges left (2 wands) | Tactical | Portraits | Loot | Wiki

Inspecter Ginsi breaks the seal and reads over the note. She starts shuffling through her paperwork while Cyrus and Finarin scan the room for something. The others don't notice Cyrus, and perhaps Finarin is just being curious.

Finarin and Cyrus:

Searching the room takes some time, especially without giving things away to the Inspector. It takes Finarin and Cyrus (1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5) five minutes to have their first go at finding the docking certificate for the At Sea.

Finarin perception assist: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Cyrus perception, DC 20: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Harbormaster perception, DC 28 (like it even matters): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Eventually, no thanks to Finarin (who was hampered by having to keep making eye contact with Inspector Ginsi), Cyrus locates the docking certificate and subtly slips it into his pocket.

The ledger of arrivals for today looks almost comically large in Inspector Ginsi's child-like hands as she pours over it. Eventually she cries out, "Aha!" Cyrus winces for some reason, his hand behind his back. Noticing that Inspector Ginsi isn't even looking at him, he lets out a visible (but not audible) sigh of relief.

"I have the pending docking request for one Kat Season," she produces another book, "And here is my pilot roster. I'll just go get the pilot so she can prepare to depart, and then you should be good to go. Oh, and to explain: Any ship that carries more than six people or 500 pounds of cargo cannot, by law, sail through the Ships' Graveyard except under the guidance of a registered member of the Pilot’s Guild. Regardless of its own captain or pilot’s skill, a specially trained pilot travels out from the Harbormaster’s Grange to a waiting ship once it has signaled. This pilot then directs the ship through the ever-changing maze of wrecks that constitutes the Ships' Graveyard. The crew of the Kat Season are currently awaiting their assigned pilot."

Several minutes pass with the Pathfinders alone together, while Inspector Ginsi locates her pilot. Feel free to chat amongst yourselves in retrospect during this time.

Inspector Ginsi returns, interrupting the conversation, "Your pilot will be a talkative dwarf called Zigil. She loves her name, and every word that rhymes with it. She has asked me to politely remind you that she is the pilot and navigating the boat safely through the treacherous waters of the Ships' Graveyard at night is her job. Rowing the boat is yours. To draw the least attention, I would suggest that the big man over there row the boat. The sight of a heavily muscled Garundi rowing a boat through the Ships' Graveyard en route to a slaving vessel is so commonplace as to be almost clichéd."

Speaking of Amaranti, if you would like to summon Kaisharga, please let me know what kind of disguise / other precautions you are taking (if any) when approaching the ship.

The Inspector leads the group out to the pier. Dozens of rowboats with the mark of the Harbormaster's Grange are docked here. A heavy-set female dwarf, dressed in sailing leathers and holding a long telescope and bright bullseye lantern stands ready at the dock. "Miro, Finarin, Amaranti, Cyrus, Gunari and Ibid, this is your pilot, Zigil. We call her Zigil the Loquacious - you cannot get a word in edgewise with her around! Good luck, everyone." With that, Inspector Ginsi departs.

Zigil looks her makeshift crew over, completely unimpressed. She spits a glob of phlegm into the water and snorts. The surly dwarf points at the rowboat and says simply, "In."

I'm going to pause the progression here for a while. Roleplay amongst yourselves and make sure to let me know any preparations you make before you go in the water. Also let me know any details you like about how you will approach the boat. My next post will be your arrival at the Kat Season.

Miro grins at the dwarf, raising his arm in greeting. His mouth opens to offer an eloquent greeting, then her short and simple In reverberates through the air. Knowing when a cause is lost, Miro continues to hold onto his cheerful smile, hopping into the boat and getting ready for the short trip through the Ships' Graveyard. Excitement courses through him, in addition to a bit of anxiety. He had never been involved in a full-scale deception like this, and gets himself mentally prepared to bring his 'A' game.
