PFS 6-01: Trial By Machine (Inactive)

Game Master Wilmannator

Intersection Map
Machine Soldier - Tactical Map
Main Map

More than a millennium has passed since the "machine mage" Karamoss's failed siege of Absalom, and for years the Pathfinder Society has used upper reaches of his subterranean siege tower as a training ground for initiates. During a routine drill, the once-dormant dungeon springs to life, and it will take all the PCs' resourcefulness and skill to make it out alive.

Please read below and then post here if you are interested in playing! I will aim to start this scenario some time in the first week of September. If I get a lot of responses, I am more than happy to start early. Please do let me know in your recruitment reply if you have any time constraints.

While I have GMed a lot in real life and played both PFS and PbP, this will be both my first time as a PbP GM and a PFS GM. I will be running this as sub-tier 1-2.

Please read the play guide on my profile before asking to join up. If you don't like it, please find another game. That said, constructive comments are welcome. Please post those in the discussion thread for this game.

Maps will be handled via Google Drawings. If you do not have and do not wish to create a Google account, please find another game.

This game will be run quickly. Please be ready to post at least every 24 hours. Players that regularly don't post within this timeframe when it is their turn will be asked to improve or leave. I will assume actions where necessary to move the game along. I'm hoping to have it finished in 6-8 weeks, but please be prepared to play for up to 12 weeks (I can't control players' post frequency).

For my part, I will endeavor to be able to post at least twice in any given 24 hour period, as required.

If you would like to play, please post as your character here with:

  • PFS#
  • Faction
  • Link to character sheet (this should be in BBCode on your character alias's profile, or you will need to send me a PDF of the full sheet).
  • Link to your character background - preference will be given to those with a better background. Please don't post your background in the reply unless you use a spoiler tag.
  • About you and your PbP experience. First time Play-by-Post gamers are welcome, but experienced PbPers will generally be given preference over inexperienced ones. Provide a link to your PbP threads if they were not on the Paizo forums.

You are welcome to play as a pregenerated level 1 character if you would prefer to leave your real life characters free for other games. This will not affect recruitment in any way. Pregenerated characters are just as welcome as custom characters. You will, however, still need to provide a character background (see above).
Download pregenerated characters here.

Amaranti stands ready for another challenge! (Character info in the profile).
My pbp experience: 5 completed scenarios + couple of ongoing campaigns. 1 post per day on weekdays is no problem, but weekends I'm not 100% sure.

Hi Amaranti! I've been reading over some of your PbP posts, and like your style.

Weekends seem to be a mixed bag - some folk get more time for this kind of thing, some get less.

Would it be too much to ask that, if we're in combat on a Friday, you "sneak out" to check if it's your turn on a smart-phone at least once on Saturday and Sunday? If it's not your initiative, no need to post.

If it is your initiative, perhaps a quick post like:

My pets attack and I try to move out of the way then cast summon monster.

I'll then do the rolls for your pets when I get online and make appropriate move decisions for you. I'm also happy if you are okay with reserving a "standard" action (or set of actions) and allowing me to make a sensible decision on your behalf when you're "away". If you would prefer for us to wait until Monday, then that's less good but fine (I know summoner turns can be complicated). In that case, please do make sure you post on Monday!

Either way, it should be fine since you've now set that expectation - provided you post regularly during the week (and I can see that you do).

I have a couple PFS available people, 2nd magus; 2nd rogue; 2nd halfling fighter.

I have played prolly 20+, GM 2-3

Available multiple on weekday and at least once on weekend

Hello GM Damo! I have a couple of PFS characters that I would love to get into one of your games.

First I have Cyrus the Flea, Human Rogue who is just about to ding level 2. I will be switching him to the Scarab Sages faction (formerly Osirion). Cyrus' background was half developed when I started playing him, and his personality has really come out during play, so there isn't anything in the profile about it. Please feel free to read through his game threads though (particularly in the beginning, character intro phases) to get a good idea of what he is like.

I also have Pooka Bladespinner, Halfling Cavalier who is also just about to ding level 2. He will be switching to the Liberty's Edge faction (formerly Andoran)

And last of all, I have a Wayang Wizard concept I would love to try now that the Wayang race is legal for PFS play.

I post 1-2 times per day generally, however I check the threads frequently (5-10 weekdays, 2-5 on weekends) and am capable of posting much more if the action is moving fast enough. All of my PFS play has been on PbP, though I have been gaming for over 20 years. I just recently discovered PbP, so I have only been doing it for a few months now.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you need anything else from me! I think I covered all the items you were asking for. (PFS #s are in the character profiles)

Sovereign Court

Greetings GM Damo,

Background

Spoiler:
As the moon rises on my 160th year, the time has come for me to move on from the forested comforts of Kyonin. I find myself inexorably drawn towards the dynamic Inner Sea region. Growing up wealthy, privileged, and powerful, I seek a new life, a better life. One filled with adventures rather than one of dank libraries, and formal gatherings.

I have recently joined the Sovereign Court, seeking to meet with like-minded fellows who share my outlook on the world around me.

Please, let me join in this grand adventure and when you are long gone I can tell your grandchildren what a time we had.

About me. I am a mature gamer (old). Please do not judge me on my activity (or inactivity here). I am a frequent poster once I am IN something. I have not yet played PFS pbp, but I did a Star Wars Saga pbp. Once I find the link I will send it to you.

Sure, reactive posts shouldn't be a problem even on weekends :)

Nice to "meet" you, Gilthanis, Papasteve08 and Finarin.

@Gilthanis: Sounds like we'll have a lot of choice. Party make-up isn't so important in this scenario, provided you guys have at least one warrior-type.

@Papasteve08: Likewise with the character choice. Any of those sound fine. I really like your posting style, too! Nice and descriptive and keeps things moving.

@Finarin: We all need to start somewhere, and I've got no problem with first time PFS PbPers. That Star Wars PbP looks interesting, too. Just the two of you? Oh, and I would never discriminate because of a lack of Paizo forum posts. I might, on the other hand, be worried if you were one of those folk who have well over 1,000 non-PbP posts. I just don't get that. I don't think I've had 1,000 things to say or ask on any given topic, even something as wonderful as Pathfinder.

@Amaranti: Thank you for that, it is very much appreciated. I've seen what should be a quick combat slow to a crawl because of waiting for one guy to post. I mostly just don't want that to happen in my game.

The Exchange

• PFS# 95737-6

I have played quite a few Pbp if you look at my main profile. This character is going to be a Kitsune Enchanter. I will fill in all of the stats this evening from Herolab as I was just waiting for the new season to go live. I check the posts multiple times a day as I really enjoy this and I post as often as the scenario allows me to during the day bar waiting on a save or check.

Dark Archive

I am up for it. As a warning, I did run this once at Gen Con (cold, so it is possible that I don't remember much of anything about the scenario, and if I do, it is probably wrong).

GM Damo wrote:

Don't look at my post count, then ;) Just 'cause one posts a lot, doesn't mean they really have much to say!

PFS# 74294-9 Gunari Maximoff, Warpriest of the Drunken Hero (2) - The Exchange

Other options are:
-7 Dierdre "Smiles" Findic - Halfling Druid w/ Giant Scorpion AC (3) <faction will be Scarab Sages?>
-8 Z'hor'll B'bblebr'x - Undine Watersinger (bard) 1 - Grand Lodge
-6 Faustus Sulpicius Volarius - Inquisitor of Asmodeus 4 - Dark Archive

I've also got a couple of GM credit characters that need be made (1 at 1xp, 1 at 2) - so could create one as front-liner if that is needed. I can always re-create this character if I don't like it!

PbP experience - played 4 games during the last PbP Game Day, and one since (with the GM... and it is DRAGGING).

Character background (for Gunari) - will be added to his profile once I flesh it out more. ;)

Sczarni

Trapper Mors, #15812-6

A brand new, trapper ranger. I've been wanting to make a tinkerer, saboteur, trap-setter for awhile, and this is the perfect opportunity.

I have played in many, many PBPs and only recently started PFS (have a couple level 2s and 3, now 4 level 1s).

I have now major time constraints and can usually post more than once a day

Sovereign Court

Submitting Miro Ammars, Halfling Bard 1.

PFS # 73432 - 2
Grand Lodge Faction
Crunch & Background are in Profile (can send you a pdf if they will not suffice)
My experience: Avid RP'er for over 20 years. Recently discovered the wonders of PbP. Just completed two PFS modules (The Confirmation, The Glass River Rescue). Involved in multiple AP's on the site (Curse of the Crimson Throne, Rise of the Runelords, Mummy's Mask, Kingmaker, Reign of Winter). No time constraints or issues with posting frequency.

@Amon Ione: I certainly can see that you post often! Glad to hear you love this style of play. It was one of my favorites until the games I was playing in slowed down to a crawl... hence my name in the GM hat.

@Silbeg: No problems running this at Gen Con, pretty sure you're allowed to re-play this one provided you are playing with a character who doesn't already have a chronicle sheet for it (so playing Gunari for this would be fine).

Oh, it's only 722! You're fine. Anyway, I only said "might". ;-)

@Trapper Mors: I assume you mean "can't post more than once per day" and that's fine. Once a day is all I ask. You certainly have a highly decorated profile!

@Miro Ammars: Nice posting frequency! Thanks for throwing your name in the ring.

@Trapper Mors: Upon a re-read of your post (and looking at the number of posts you make) I'm changing my assumption to you had a different typo and meant "no" instead of "now". Makes more sense anyway.

LOL. Yes, that was the typo. I usually post more than once, unless there's literally nothing for my character to do. I don't like to clutter up the game threads with filler, "Mors watches the others' discussion of quantum physics while he picks his teeth and scratches himself" posts.

Sovereign Court

@GM Damo:

Yes it was just a one-on-one. He was nice in the beginning then left abruptly to join something else. Let me know if there is anything else I need to do to be considered.

@Trapper Mors: Classic! I only add filler to game threads when there have been no posts for ages and it appears as though the GM has gone on vacation... as much to keep the thread alive as to relieve my own boredom. In the scenario Gunari and I are playing at the moment, it's taken a week to do a single round of combat - all down to the GM - and I'd have to say that it's probably not even that long for this scenario. Now I just want my character back! Looks like it's the last encounter, though. Big room with what looks like a throne in it.

@Finarin: Just read my profile page's "Play guide". I'm more than happy to give first time PbPers a go. After all, I was one not so long ago! I tried to PM you also, but it appears you have private messaging disabled.

Dark Archive

I would like to submit Halungalom for consideration. He is a freshly built Gnome Summoner (Synthesist). I have yet to complete a background on him as of yet, but I'm thinking his personality is going to be that he considers his eidolon more as a tool then as a companion. He designed to be either both an arcane spell support, a front lint brawler, or both at the same time if we need it.
This will be Halungalom's first game, but not mine. I have one other PFS legal character, Zarunkumar, who is a level 3 Hedge Witch and is currently in another game. If you look at my aliases it appears I have many more but until recently I didn't know about the alias category for characters and so every character I made for every game got registered even if it wasn't legal. So his PFS # in 94822-16.
As for posting rate I am a consistent minimum one post a day kind of player, but even when I'm not posting I'm checking for new post about 7-8 times a day (my wife says I'm obsessed, but I think she's just jealous). I have been playing Pathfinder PBP for about a year now, but before that I had about 10 years of tabletop experience, mostly D&D but also a little Star Wars RPG where our GM kept forgetting that there were only 2 of us playing and kept killing us and bringing us back just to kill us again.
If there is anything else you need just let me know and I'll get back to you.

Sczarni

Synthesists aren't legal, either, unfortunately.

Quite right, Trapper Mors. Thanks for pointing it out.

@Halungalom Shortstack: The original ruling (I believe) can be found here, along with a meaningful discussion:

Grand Lodge

I would like to submit Henrick Bulwark to join this adventure (150786-2). He is a newly created dwarf ranger, and a member of the Grand Lodge. Actually, I just spent the last two days creating him in order to apply to this game.

I am new to PFS, but have over 20 years past experience with games up to 3.5. I don't have any recent PbP to point to, but I used to play pretty regularly years ago, and have been on hiatus while the kids were smaller. But I saw your post the other day and got interested. If you still have room, and none of this scares you off, I would like to join.

Thanks!

Sovereign Court

Fixed :)

Scarab Sages

If there still is room, I'd like to submit my never-been-played Wizard 2. Still working on her spellbook, but should have it organized come game time.

Though I work afternoons and early evenings through the week, I keep up with posts via mobile when I can and always have my PbP listing open.

Hi all!

First up, thank you for being patient. I was waiting for one more submission from someone who sent me a PM - but it was not forthcoming.

Secondly, it was great to read all of your submissions and go through your previous PbP posts. In an ideal world, I'd get to play with all of you. I would honestly have no problems having any of you in my group. Alas, the limit is 6. I've picked players whose posts seem to best fit with my style of play. I have paid no more than cursory attention to party make-up. Sessions can be more fun that way.

If you didn't make the cut, I may still contact you in a PM if someone pulls out. I may also get in touch if I decide to run another scenario (we'll see how busy this one keeps me first!).

So, my selections are (in no particular order):

  • Amaranti - Level 2 summoner
  • Papasteve08 (Cyrus the Flea) - Level 2 rogue
  • Finarin Moonstep - Level 1 magus
  • Trapper Mors - Level 1 ranger
  • Gunari - Level 2 warpriest
  • Miro Amars - Level 1 bard

Sitting on the sidelines, and thank you very much for submitting:

  • Gilthanus - 2nd magus; 2nd rogue; 2nd halfling fighter
  • Amon Ione - Level 1 enchanter
  • Halungalom Shortstack - Level 1 summoner
  • Kalisti Jordani - Level 2 wizard
  • Ibid - Level 2 bard (submitted via PM)

For the selected:

  • Please PM me with a link to any chronicle and inventory sheets you may have or email me at my Gmail.com account (my username is "wilmann" - you should be able to figure out the rest, hopefully web spiders can't).
  • PM me with any purchases you would like to make before the session begins. You start in Absalom, so all values of purchases are legal.
  • Please PM me your email address some time soon so that I can (at the end of the session) email you your chronicle sheets. I'll get a draft email and chronicle ready to scan and go for each of you so you're not waiting around for too long once it's all over.
  • If you haven't got a full BBCode character sheet on your profile, please get it in there or email me a PDF or scanned copy of your character sheet.

Also, for those selected, if your character is no longer available (or you've changed your mind) and you'd still like to play, I am absolutely fine with a different character (including pre-gen). My choices above were made based on factors other than your class and level.

All this book keeping should take less than a week, but just for the sake of setting a start date let's aim to kick things off on Friday September 5. That'll give everyone Friday and the weekend to respond to the opening post, introduce your characters and get to the location for the scenario to begin in earnest on the Monday.

Of course, if everyone gets their stuff in soon and it all goes smoothly, I'm happy to start earlier!

Sorry, also forgot to mention Henrick Bulwark in the sidelines list! When I was reading back over, I mentally merged your name with Halangalom Shortstack. Apologies for the initial exclusion and thanks again for submitting.

No worries GM, I have been selected into another game, so I got into a game :) Please take me off the wait-list and thank you for your consideration :)

Scarab Sages

Thanks for taking me! I added links to the chronicle sheets to Amaranti's profile. I don't yet have an inventory sheet, so I'll need to make one.

Sure thing. Inventory sheets are only needed if you want to buy stuff. I think it used to happen on the chronicle sheets so no problem at all if that's where your purchases are.

Ha! No problem. Have a great game, all!
