Thinking about GMing a game on here again, but rather than Pathfinder, since I am in several of those already, I am looking at Spycraft 2.0. Simply because it has a lot of the rules systems I feel necessary for what I want to run. I have been running an idea through my head about a CIA SAD team that did some work during the Russo-Afghan war during the 80's, during Operation Typhoon. If you've ever heard of the movie Charlie Wilson's War, you'll know what I'm talking about. As most SAD teams are made up of ex-special forces soldiers and usually at least one Field Agent, that is the background of the team. I intend on it being a pretty heavy role-play/ serious type game, but as we all know, some humor always finds its way into games. Nonetheless, I'm just looking for interest at this point. If enough is garnered, I will post more details. Thanks for reading.
tl;dr: Interest check for 80's CIA SAD team set in Russo-Afghan War using SpyCraft 2.0

I knew if I waited the weekend, I'd get more. Though as far as I know, Spycraft and it's sister, Fantasy Craft are no longer being published, I really enjoyed the system and would love the chance to run it.
The premise is that after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, the CIA puts together a team to go in and clandestinely help there rebel fighters defeat the DPRA and their Soviet backers.
If you guys are up for it, I will post campaign details and what traits will be active for this campaign later today.

Okay. I've turned this into a Recruitment thread. Here are the campaign details. Any questions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer them.
Starting date is February 11th, 1980.
All character backgrounds should include some time spent at Camp Peary, the CIA's paramilitary training ground. Most of you should have some special operations experience, but it isn't necessary, as at least one of you will be a Field Operative. The game will involve combat, obviously, but also intelligence work and hearts and minds operations. The game will start with all of you being recruited for the team.
Characters should start at 3rd Level. I want to make sure you have some experience under your belts and aren't just green boots.
Campaign Traits
Bleak
Clandestine
Elite Ops
Faction: CIA
Gritty
Historical: 80s
Without further ado...let the character submissions begin!

I'm thinking a Sleuth. He can pass for a forensics guy as well, I'm thinking. Keeping what this game is about in mind, he isn't built for a forensics guy (I'd pick scientist for that, probably), but more as a stealth guy with really good senses. He also has decent combat gear as well. By all of this, of course, I mean "I made a Sleuth."

Concepts for now is fine, as I want you guys to form a team together.
What did you want to use from 10000 Bullets? Not sure if I have that one.

hi,
I am really interested.
I am thinking a former Charlie Ranger from 1971 injured in the invasion of Cambodia. Spent the rest of the decade doing off the books work for the CIA, served in the Rhodesian SAS.
Class most likely Scout.
I will put together a full background when I get back from work this evening.

Nevermind, I can't find what I was looking for. There were some new classes attached to Living Spycraft 2.0 or Ten Thousand Bullets, that I had an interest in, however that material may have been taken down.
I'll alert my friend, see if he is up for PBP, and get back to you!

Here is what I got so far:
Born in 1952, to a Merrill's Marauder vet on furlough from a wound sustained at the landings of Inchon and an army nurse, Timothy K. Smith, grew up in the backwoods of New England where he became adept at hunting squirrel and stalking larger game such as deer and bobcat.
By ten he was an excellent marksmen and one of the best boys with a compass that his scout leader had ever come across. After graduating high school and excelling in languages, primarily Latin, German and French, despite the anti-war protests brewing amongst people his age, he volunteered thrice: the army, the airborne and the LRRPs. The army was in his blood, the discipline, but mostly the bush. On an uncannily cold day for December in Vietnam, he arrived at the forward base at An Khe. His excellent natural bushcraft, led him to be recommended for the 5th Special Forces Group's renowned Recondo School. By the time he completed his recondo training, the LRRPs were renamed “Rangers” and then joined the Charlie Company Rangers of the 75th Ranger Regiment.
President Nixon being a ornery old bugger, then made the decision to send the boys across the border into Cambodia to “deny them Congs their safe haven.” As a precursor to the invasion, as per Ranger tradition, Smith's team “4-3” or the “FUBAR Fourth” climbed into their Huey and headed towards the LZ.
As Smith unassed the chopper, a lucky NLF howitzer shell smashed into the Huey and Smith caught a fist size piece of Rostovian steel in his upper thigh. The rest of the official war in Vietnam he spent convalescing in a Japanese infirmary but he fought back to get his thigh back into working order and in spite of a limp when he walks, he can still run a mile in 6 minutes with full combat pack.
By mid 1973, Staff Sergeant Smith was visited by some important looking fellows who had a job for him. They told him America still needed him and that the best way to fight communists was to join up with them and they slid him a card and gave him an address in Virginia to meet them in three months after leaving the army. He showed up and learned tradecraft at the Farm.
His first assignment was to go Salisbury (present day Harrare) Rhodesia and assess the communist forces. Being still in his early 20s official cover was a no go, so they told him to sign on as a mercenary and fight in that country's Bush War. There is where gained a love of the FN FAL rifle chambered in 7.62 x 54mm NATO due to accuracy and easy maintenance.
Running numerous missions with the Rhodies, he gained an utmost respect for their fighting abilities. In winter of 1978/9, Smith was recalled to Langley, fully expecting to be sent to either Iran, Nicaragua or Afghanistan.

I'm thinking of another character now. Just a concept, no stats or anything. A Faceman named Henry "The Mask" Vanterfield (or not, just a placeholder). His father worked for the CIA and raised him to be a spy. But not too long before the events of the campaign, his father is found to have sold CIA secrets to Russia. Disgraced, Henry is allowed to keep employment, but is demoted from an elite operative all the way to a lowly desk job or something as temporary punishment for what his father did (who escaped into hiding).
He finally works his way back into the good graces (albiet with -8 Reputation) of the higher ups, who allow him to perform lower-priority operations. So slowly he works his way back up, until he is assigned to the mission this campaign is featuring. So he now once again at Camp Peary, awaiting His order.

Those backgrounds are looking great guys. I do have the world on fire book by the way, so most of that will be available in the campaign.

You guys seem to be the only ones interested, but unless I'm counting wrong, I only see three concepts. I'm looking for 4 to 6. There will be a mix of things, tactical, social and otherwise. The main thing though will be making sure all of you have some combat experience. . As for hacking in the early 80s.. does ARPANET ring a bell?

Man, I haven't played spycraft 2.0 in....god, has it really been like 7 years? wow. anyway, I would sure be interested.
I have an idea for a Vietnam era tunnel rat and knife fighter who is working for the CIA because he is "using" them to find his ex-wife and daughter, who were put in witness protection while he was in Vietnam. He's gonna be a grizzled old(er) man who has been killing for more years than he can comfortably remember.

Looks good guys. Yes, World on Fire is a valid source book.

alright so I haven't played anything modern age for a minute, so any background'll take me a minute. I haven't decided between faceman or advocate yet, with a dip or two in something more combat inclined. I expect to be more melee inclined, as a lot of negotiations go bad while in close proximity.
I tend to enjoy playing support characters more than combat monsters, so I may pick up Bandage and eventually go prestige into Medic. Hard to say at this point.
As for theme, I was thinking former FBI hostage negotiator with a good knowledge of foreign cultures who was eventually picked up by the CIA after an 'incident' she was involved in, hit the public eye.
DM ShadowBloodmoon |
If you guys are ready to start posting character sheets once your concepts are more concrete, go ahead. As for once per session abilities, I'm going to do once per mission.
