Witz, can you please run the Baron, as he comes after you? +2 to hit, 1d6 damage...

Wits Fizzlewick wrote:
"Spears? Do you have one in a more manageable size?"

Alfredn turns to Witz, "Of course Sir." he hands him a small sized spear. You notice that the spears are identical to a normal short spear, except they have a large cross bar, towards the pointy end of the shaft.

The Baron takes a good look at you all before he set out, "Ah, all sorted? Good. Nasty creatures boars, the spears have a bar to stop them running themselves further through in an attempt to gouge you. Please do feel free to use your own weapons if you require, but do be careful!"

With that, he leads you off into the forest. A few minutes brings you to a clearing, with a small stream, and a very angry boar. The other men the Baron mentioned, appear to have vanished...

Map. A-J accross the top, 1-10 down (putting the boar in D4)

Emanual is up...

Male Human Fighter/ 1

Emanual will charge the boar with his own sword, crying out as he runs..."It's dinner time boys!!"

Emanuals blow fails to break the creatures tough hide. Witz, but don't worry about posting out of order!

Witz dismounts and hangs back, holding the spear awkwardly, while trying to keep it between him and the boar. He stays 20 feet away from the boar, muttering to himself. "Uncivilized way of doing things. I wonder if acid would damage the meat?"

The Baron moves cautiously after Emanual, keeping an eye on the boar and an eye on Luc. He attacks, using the boar spear, jabbing away at the beast.

Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

The enraged boar gores at Emanual, (hitting AC16, for 12 points of damage...).

Ninian's limp seems to disappear as he gives the boar a wide birth as he circles it opposite of Luc, thrusting at its flank.

Attack 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 1 + 2 = 15
Damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Male Human Ranger 2

Charging in from the side, Reynard lunges forward with the spear
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Male Human Gunslinger (Pistolero) 1/Rogue 1

Thankful for the flank, Luc charges in, opposite Dean, stabbing at the boar's thick hide.

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Roll to confirm critical: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

Normal damage: 1d6 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + 2 + (2) = 10
If critical, add: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Ninian and Reynard both make contact with the beast, but their blows don't phase it. Luc's careful placement pays off though, he lands a convincing blow, and his rapier slides into the flesh behind the beast's haunches. It screams in anger and frustration, but doesn't go down.

From the side of the forest you hear the baron shouting "Bravo, well done!"

Round Two..

"Screw this!" Ninian drops the spear and draws his cane sword, then thrusts at the boar.

Attack 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

"Sonovab~@*#!"

Male Human Fighter/ 1

Emanual is at 0. With his last bit of strength he raises his sword for another strike, barely getting out the words "I'm going to enjoy cooking you." After his strike, he collapses to the ground in a heap.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 2) + 6 = 14

Witz, seeing Emanual go down, charges the man, dropping his spear and whipping out a reddish flask of liquid as he goes. He shakes it vigorously and pours it into Emanual's wounds.

1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 healing

The Baron stabs at the beast with his spear!
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Emanual's blow, although under powered, finds a vital artery on the boar, taking it down even as he collapses to the ground.

The Baron runs over, pulling a small vial from a pocket, he administers it to Emanual's now dazed and confused form Cure another 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 HP. "Oh, my friend, that was a stunning blow, and such poetry, destroying the beast even as you succumbed to your wounds! I shall have my bard write a ballad of this!"

150XP each.

Male Human Fighter/ 1

To Witz: " Thank you friend. I don't believe I've ever had to work so hard for a meal." he says as he clasps Witz's shoulder with a smile. Looking to the Baron as he stands, "I would enjoy hearing it, as long as it honors my comrades here as well." Looking around to everyone else, "Good hunting my friends. Now, who hungry?"

Male Human Gunslinger (Pistolero) 1/Rogue 1

"Right here, mon ami, give me a leg, nicely seasoned!"

"I'm starving but hold on." Ninian holds his hands over the unhealed portion of Emanual's wounds. There, that should help. Now, you are going to save some of that boar for bacon, right?"

CLW 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Male Human Fighter/ 1

"Thank you Ninian. Bacon? Of course!! I don't think even our group could finish this boar in one meal. Some fresh bacon and sausage is a great way to start the morning! Shall we return to town, or should I go ahead and get the more unpleasant buisness done here? It should not take long." He says as he pulls a large knife out of his boot.

"We would always field dress the beast before we go forth, the meat will spoil otherwise. I shall have my men perform the task, unless one of you would rather try? the Baron says.

He looks around, "Where are my men? They should have been keeping the beast cornered?" He shrugs, "Not to worry, they will turn up. Once this thing is gutted, we can take a hunch and roast it by the stream for lunch, and then make our heroic way back to town. What say you?"

Male Human Fighter/ 1

"I'll take care of it" he says as he spilts the beast down the belly. Emanual will gut and skin the boar, then take off a hunch of meat for roasting, also taking a leg by Luc's request. He then begins seasoning the meat, pulling various spices and herbs from the pouches around his waist. As he does this, " Can someone get a fire started? We should give it time to get hot before I throw on the meat."

Profession cook (take 10): 18

Male Human Ranger 2

Reynard looks around for the Baron's missing men.

Perception1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

The baron watches Emanual politely, obviously bored, and looking back up and down the paths every now and again.

Reynard, if anyone else wants to look for the men, I'll treat that as an aid another roll ;)

"Uh...Manny? We can wait till we get back before we start preppin' and eatin' you know.

Perception 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

Dean and Reynard poke around the edge of the trees while the others fuss over the meat, and a small fire. To the North, a gap in the trees shows some broken stems of grass, that indicate someone passed through here recently. As if placed to cast aside all doubt, just into the tree line, sits a man's flat cap...

Male Human Gunslinger (Pistolero) 1/Rogue 1

Luc sheathes his rapier after the fight and watches with earnest Emanual's cooking skill over the fire.

I couldn't find the OOC thread, but I found this which might be incorporated into our campaign. Steam punk changes

Ok, we have a couple of people looking at a possible track the missing minions may have taken, and we have a few people fusing over food. Where does everyone want to go next?

Witz would like to examine the path the missing minions might have tread.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

Male Human Fighter/ 1

If the group finds anything intresting, Emanual will ask the Baron to watch the meat while he goes with them to investigate. If nothing turns up, he will continue cooking.

Dean, Reynard, Witz:

You pass into the trees. The undergrowth is thick, and slows you down, the trees are quite well clustered together and you can only see 15 to 20 feet in front of you before their trunks obscure your view. It is ominously quiet in here, the leaves and foliage dampening any sound.

Perception check again please...

Everyone else:

Witz, Reynard and Dean pass into the trees to the edge of the clearing, and are soon lost from view. The boar begins to sizzle over the fire, and the fat begins to render down, and the smell becomes captivating.

Male Human Gunslinger (Pistolero) 1/Rogue 1

"Holler if you need anything", says Luc, thinking the party is going camping.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

Dean, Reynard,Witz:
You follow along a trail for a few minutes, finally coming out into a small clearing. As you break the tree line, some arrows come flying from a group of goblins, one hitting Reynard (for 3 points of damage).

Init please...

Sorry fro the delay folks, busy weekend....

Everyone Else...

The fire burns well, and the meat is soon cooked. The day wears on in the hot sun, with the sounds of the stream tinkling on the edge of the clearing.

Can those of us by the fire make a perception check to hear the sounds of combat?

Emanual Stokes wrote:

If people wouldn't insist on dropping the spoilers you wouldn't know there was a combat to be making perception checks about! But to answer your question, I'm getting to that, although according to RAW, that perception check would be somewhere around DC 30-100... (+1/10ft, they travel approx 300ft per min, and walked "a few minutes" before they got into combat...and that's ignoring the tree's dampening sounds). As far as it goes, nothing has happened yet that you would hear even if they were close by though...

Dean, Reynard,Witz:

Init:
Goblins 23
Witz 12
Ninian 10
Raynard 10

The scene resolves itself to be a clearing with three goblins, obviously in the middle of dismembering the remains of two men. From what you can tell, up until they heard you coming they were parading round with the body parts, one still wears the scalp of one man upon it's own head.

Now though the goblins are a little more serious, they each stand at the edge of the clearing, crouched and firing at you with crude bows. They still shriek and scream insults in goblin though....

The goblins get another shot off before you close with them, the first missing Witz by a mile, the second glancing off Dean's coat, and the final one, impaling Reynard through the fleshy part of one leg (causing 3 points of damage).

Witz

Everyone else:

Perception: DC35:
From the woods, not quite in the direction the others travelled off in, you hear a high pitched screech, unmistakably goblin in origin...

"Codswain it! Damnable murderous imps! Avenge those poor men!"

Witz will pull forth one of his ubiquitous flasks, shake it vigorously and hurl it at the goblin wearing the scalp.

Attack! 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23 ranged touch
Damage! 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 and 5 splash damage to anyone within 5 feet

Dean, Reynard,Witz:

The Goblin is engulfed in flame, and screams so hard, it's pitch leaves human hearing. As though it is sealed in glass, it strains to it's limit silently, and then collapses in a still smouldering heap.

There's no one near enough to get splashed, but that's one dead goblin. Imagine the goblins are about 10-15ft apart, and you are around 30ft away...

Male Human Fighter/ 1

I wasn't aware we were not supposed to look at them. I thought they were done to shorten the post length like in other areas. Anyway...
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16

Ninian draws his crossbow and opens fire on the nearest goblin. A hissing sound emanating from the air tank as the bolt screams towards the little creature.

Attack 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Damage 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

"Take that, little b!+#%es!"

Male Human Ranger 2

With a growl of pain and hate that erupts into a full throated roar, Reynard fires at the other goblin, crossbow whipping forward.

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
1d10 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Emanual Stokes wrote:

The idea of the spoilers, it keep the separation of knowledge, i.e. to hide the "spoilers". Things like knowledge checks, perception checks etc, where I ask people to roll, I'll put behind spoilers like above, you only read it, if you hit the DC.

When I put character names in a spoiler, that spoiler is just for those characters (unless I make a mistake and miss someone out, but that should be pretty obvious when it happens). In these cases I'd also appreciate it if people could put their replies in spoilers too.

This battle is a good example, one of the strengths of a pbp like this verses a table top game is that you don't have to take people aside, or say "your character doesn't know this is happening". As far as Emanual is concerned, his friends have wandered into the forest and will be back soon, he can't hear, and doesn't know that they are currently being attacked by goblins. When his friends get back, dirty, injured, but hopefully victorious, it will be a surprise for him, and if the spoilers work, for you too.

At least that's the idea. This is the way it's worked in all the pbps I've played in.

Dean,Witz,Reynard:
The two bolts hit the two remaining goblins full on, and both howl in pain. In a show of comedic, completely unintentional, symmetry, both goblins stand, aim, and fire their bows again. The first misses Dean entirely, but the second again impales Reynard (Doing 3 HP of damage)

DM

Spoiler:

"B$~%%&%s and be damned! I hate you foul beasts and I'll wipe out you and your spawn if it's the last thing I do!"

Wits pulls another bomb, shakes it vigorously and hurls it at another goblin.

Attack! 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16 ranged touch
Damage! 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Male Human Fighter/ 1

Got it. I have always been of the mind that it comes down to player knowledge versus character knowledge, but I understand that with the PbP, there actually IS a chance that not only can my character be surprised, but myself as a player too. It would add a bit of suspense to it. My apologies...but now I know.
