A slightly steampunked up Rise of the Runelords. I've stayed close to the text for this first part, but plan to move away from it as we progress....

Map of the relevant bit of the tunnels.

This is just the last bit, as otherwise it's a huge map with nothing really of interest...

As you round the first corner, the tunnel resolves into a largish cave, 35ft deep, and about 20ft at it's widest point, although it narrows to around 10ft in the middle. A horribly deformed humanoid, hairless and emaciated, stands hunched in the shadows in the middle of the cave. Its unnaturally long arms end in three-fingered talons, and its legs bend like those of a dog. A writhing network of bulging veins form dark blue patterns across its pallid skin. But worst of all is its face—its nose is little more than a pair of slits, and its eyes are bulging and red. The lower jaw splits in half at the chin into two wretched arms that end in tiny three-fingered hands to either side an open gullet with a lolling tongue. It doesn't seem to have noticed you yet.

Male Human Ranger 2

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
1d10 ⇒ 6

Reynard stares at the creature in a mixturee of shock and disgust.

"What the $^#@????", he utters as he fires at the monstrosity.

Th beast shudders at the impact of the bolt, which embeds itself through a shoulder. It makes no noise, but slowly begins to turn towards you, making a sniffing motion.

Male Human Gunslinger (Pistolero) 1/Rogue 1

Luc throws his dagger at it:

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17; Damage: 1d4 + 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + (5) + 2 = 11...couple of things: I am assuming I am within 30' sneak attack range, also that it is more than 10' and less than 20' away. I got the impression it is 17.5' away from the description. If not, apply -2 to the attack roll.

They are reasonable assumptions, in any case, you hit.

Luc's dagger hit's the create bringing a silent yelp of pain. It staggers forward and looks for a moment like it is going to fall, but stays on it's feet.

Still waiting for Dean and Wits' actions.

Dean:
This isn't something you've seen, heard of or read about before.

Wits, being slightly out of fiery death, opts for his crossbow. He unslings it and loads it, while watching the beast carefully.

None of the books on Arcane lore, or rituals you have read speak of a creature such as this.

Round 1, Dean up...

oops, sorry

Sense Motive 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

Dean pauses, and tries to figure out if this creature means him harm.

Hmm, everyone seems to have wandered off. I'll just add a couple of levels of Dragon, to this beasty and begin the TPK then...

:D

I'm still here. Just waiting on the creatures disposition.

Male Human Ranger 2

There are people awaiting the results of skill checks so I hadn't posted an action as yet.

Reynard Varvanyuk wrote:

Naa, if he's pausing to wait and see what it does, and work it out from there, he's Delaying in my book. He'll get the results of that sense motive once the *something* gets it's action...

As an aside though, I do often miss things like that, so if you are waiting on something to post an action, post a note of that, and I'll make sure of what's going on.

Still waiting on Reynard and then Luc

just as an aside, the reason I've gone with the out of order rounds up to now, is to try to avoid the "1round takes two weeks" pace of pbps. I'm more than willing To go to a more strict order if that makes life easier for everyone, but I would want to make sure everyone was checking the boards often enough for that to work first. So, anyone want a flamewar in the discussion thread ;)

Male Human Ranger 2

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
1d10 ⇒ 8

Distracted by his allies misgivings, Reynard's next shot goes wide.

Male Human Gunslinger (Pistolero) 1/Rogue 1

Luc tries to finish it off and as he swings, he yells, "Hey Dean, you going to ask it out on a date? If not, stop lookin' at it and kill it!"

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8; Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

"I cannot discern any truth to its origins, but when it dies, I would like to harvest a sample of its blood, vitals, humors and flesh."

With this, Wits fires his crossbow at the thing.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

"No! And No! I'm not killing any creature just cuz it's ugly!" Ninian keeps his crossbow readied, but now in a more general direction.

Ninian focuses his stare at the creature and his companions as he Detects Evil.

Reynard's bolt flies wide, as Does Luc's attempted blow.

The beast itself swipes back at Luc with two massive claws, and leans forward to snap at him with massive articulated jaws. In it's weakended state though is only manages to hit him a glancing blow with a claw. (Luc takes 5 points of damage)

Wit'z bolt finally hits home though, and the beast falls backwards on it's impact, dead.

End of combat, split 600Xp between you...

Sorry, missed this on my first read...

Even dead, the beast radiates a very faint aura of evil, more an aura of wrath, than of hate or True Evil though...

In their defense, it does look likeThis...

What does everyone want to do?

You are in the bottom most cave at the moment.

Male Human Gunslinger (Pistolero) 1/Rogue 1

As Luc bandages his wounds, he looks with disgust at Dean and directs his comments at him: "Really, so it was not evil, then? It presented no danger to the village? Fine! From now on, you go first since you seem to want to study and negotiate with everything down here. And when it starts clawing you.." Luc picks up his dagger and moves to the back of the line.

Witz will move forward to the corpse, examining it and taking samples of its blood, viscera and humors.

"Perhaps it is evil and perhaps it is not. Either way, it was found in a cavern inhabited by a murderer and his horde of foul goblins. Guilt by association."

"A bookkeeper for the guilds may be evil, but I'm not going to kill him cold blood. As far as I know, that thing was digging for mushrooms. I have no idea what it was and wasn't about to attack it without provocation. The goblins are different. They started a war against this city."

You are stood in a cave now. Littered with a few bones, and the body of the beast. There are no other exits that you can see, except to go back to the tunnel you just left.

Care to continue?

Male Human Gunslinger (Pistolero) 1/Rogue 1

Leave the cave and continue going north would be Luc's suggestion from the back.

About face, forward march it is then.

MAP

The original purpose of this chamber is unclear, but large mounds of rubble lie strewn on its floor. There is a door in the North wall, made of darker stone than the walls.

Male Human Gunslinger (Pistolero) 1/Rogue 1

Dean leads us through the Northern door.

Yeah he doesn't. He listens to see if anything is stirring and checks for traps.

The door doesn't appear to be trapped. Although it is firmly stuck and will take a fair amount to move it (DC20 Str)

Ninian jiggles the handle and gives the door a little shove . Strength 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19

That's quite the "little jiggle"! Anyone care to aid another?

"I say! Perhaps the correct application of forces can solve the problem. Allow me to assist?"

Wits will move up, and give the door a shove as well.

Strength: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10

Witz's small frame adds just the right amount of force to make the door move. Behind is s small corridor, leading North.

I'll drop you a new map in a couple of hours

A long few hours, but map.

The tunnel winds North, West and then North again, where you see another exit to the west, obviously back out to the main tunnel you left earlier.

A change has come over your surrounding now though, and where the walls were rough hewn sandstone, they now become immaculate stonework, carved with a care and attention you haven't seen before. This is obviously an old structure, from the evidence you have seen thus far, but now it is taking on an ancient bent.

As you head North again, you see a life sized statue, with a door on the far side, and two tunnels branching to the East.

What does the statue look like?

Wits Fizzlewick wrote:
What does the statue look like?

A red marble statue of a strikingly beautiful but, at the same time, monstrously enraged human woman stands in the middle of this room, her stony expression twisted in fury. The woman wears flowing robes, and her long hair is held back from her face by an intricate headdress of hooks and blades. In her left hand she carries a large book, the face of which is inscribed with a seven-pointed star. Her right hand holds a glittering metal and ivory ranseur.

Knowledge(History) DC:35:
The statue depicts Runelord Alaznist,

Technically wouldn't a natural 20 mean you know, or does that not apply to KNowledge checks?

I believe that the Natural 20 rule only applies to "To Hit" rolls. Everything else it just adds to the modifier.
