Nightflier's Midnight Game Thread

Game Master nightflier

Set in the grim world of Aryth, Nightflier's Midnight is a game that speaks of almost futile hope that shines against the darkness.

Nightflier, before you reveal the results of the fort save, Gilian has the mastery of nature which means she can command plants. Can she try it on the lichen/moss before being affected? It's a charisma check (mod +2 for Gilian). The idea would be to prevent it from shedding spores or from using them to harm the party if it's a "voluntary act". If it's possible, roll for Gilian to speed up the game.

Dark Archive

Instantly realizing what is happening, Gilian reaches with her gift and forces the fungi to sleep. There are still spores in the air, since the fungi constantly shed them, but there are no new ones, so all of you get +3 to save. Nicely done. 100 XP.

Plants, including it's spores, will wither and die around Ragnar {haunted path, first level ability, it's why he was leaving blackened footprints through grass up by the ring of standing stones, etc.) If this is a plant without a stat block, Ragnar and the people near him should be unaffected. In case this is an encounter and not just a plant-based trap or hazard, here's that fort save-

Chops and Felina suddenly drop to the floor, giving no sign of life.

Heal DC 15:
They are not dead. Only in a deep hibernation.
First two persons remaining in the front, Perception, please. That would mean Sorok and Lyj.

Solvistania quickly examines Chops for signs of life. Heal 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20 She turns to the others, and says quietly and with a visible note of relief, "They are not dead, just asleep. I have no clue how to awaken them."

"Let me try, I've got something that may help"

Gilian takes out of her pack a small bottle containing a greenish oily substance. Opening the bottle, she pours some on her hands and applies it on the dworg face and hands.

This is an infusion oil that will give him a +1 save to fortitude

Male Tiefling (Daemon-Spawn) Arcanist 1

Perception check 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

Lyj holds himself still, drawing the blade strapped to his thigh. With a swift look around, he makes an attempt to ascertain the source of the apparent attack. He pays particular attention to the glow, and tries to place the scent in the air - is it gas, or something worse?

Knowledge Dungeoneering, maybe...? 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25

Taking a protective stance in front of the fallen dworg and the two ladies bent in concern over him, Duncan intently stares into the darkness.

Dark Archive

I'm gonna wait for Sorok's roll...

Male Black Blood Dwarf Fighter 5

Knowledge Dungeoneering, maybe...? 1d20 + 12-

Lyj:
Beyond the glowing fungi, you see two strange creatures. They look like mushrooms, the size of halflings, perhaps, but with arms and legs. They are hiding in the murk of the tunnel beyond the glow, but their skill is apparently no match for your senses. To your eyes, they look like the poisonous mushrooms found in the southern jungles - angry red in color, seeping white milky puss from their crowns, but also slightly glowing in the dark, like orange hellish flames. They are holding what seems to be blow pipes in their hands, ready to be used in moments. Roll Bluff to conceal that you have noticed them.

After the Dwarf falls, Lyj becomes the only person between Duncan and the darkness, Duncan tries to discern anything ahead, since his knowledge of tactics is telling him that this could be a good place for an ambush.
Perception 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
And while doing so, he steps over Sorok's body moving closer to Lyj, his shield and sword ready for any sign of an attack.

Really busy day at work - I'll be able to post in a few hours.

Male Tiefling (Daemon-Spawn) Arcanist 1

Lyj continues to look for intruders, his sweep of the tunnel causing him to duck close behind Duncan at one point.

Duncan:
Without pausing in his search, he mutters out of the corner of his mouth, "Get your shield up, warrior - incoming missiles from down the tunnel."

He seems to relax a bit, and moves over as if to help the stricken Sorok. He carefully moves the dwarf's tower shield aside to check the dwarf for injury.
Nightflier:

Bluff1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
Attempting to get ahold of Sorok's tower shield to set it up for cover before giving myself away. If the assailants make their move, so will I.

Lyj:
Mushroom Men seem not to guess that you have noticed them.

Suddenly, silent puffing sounds announce that someone stands in the dark tunnel in front of you and something rushes through the air...

Roll to confirm critical 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

Lyj rushes to pick up the dwarf's shield and cover himself, but the tower shield is strapped to Sorok's arm, so he is out of luck and the dart hits him square on. For an instance, he starts to faint as poison surges through his veins, but perhaps he will remain standing.

Other dart hits Duncan savagely in the neck and the poison goes straight at his brain, rushed by the blood.

Fortitude save1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Fighting the burning sensation spreading from his neck Duncan yells to the rest of the party "Two enemies with blowpipes ahead. Might be more. Prepare yourselves, I'm charging in.
With that, shield held in front so he can see above the rim, Duncan rushes down the corridor past Lyj, prepared to strike.

Lyj drops to the ground like a sack of stones. Duncan rushes past him and with several quick strides reaches two strange creatures, like halfling sized toadstools, but with limbs. They hold strange-looking blowpipes with bulbous ends that look like they are used for squeezing. The moving toadstools are angry red in color, seeping white milky puss from their crowns, but also slightly glowing in the dark, like orange hellish flames.

Shrugging of another burning sensation from another dart, this time one in his thigh, Duncan charges the two figures, and strikes at the right one with intention of cutting through to the other in the same mighty swing.
Cleave 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

Attack against the second one 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
damage 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Dark Archive

With one mighty swing, knight almost cleaves in half one of the moving fungi and severely wounds the other.

"I'm fighting two mushroom men here." Duncan yells back to the rest of the party.

After half a second he adds, but this time talking to Mushroom Men in Erenlander hoping they will understand "Please surrender, I don't wish to kill you"

Solvistania slips into her combat training, as Duncan's cry galvanized her to action. She steps away from Durathoin's unconscious form and peers down the corridor, intently searching for signs of additional mushroom men. She summons her arcane energy, but holds it ready for additional targets to show themselves.

"Duncan, do you see any more of them?"

Ready action to cast Web should she see any additional Myconids approaching.

Rerolling Fort save 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Lyj staggers back to his feet, clapping a hand to his arm where a dart is lodged in his bicep. He tears the thing from his arm with a snarl, and throws Sorok's shield aside, staring with malice down the tunnel at the mushroom things. Pure malice, something few beings can truly call up - but to a tiefling, it's as natural as breathing.

He snaps his gaze to the moss on the wall near Duncan and the fungus beings, and finds that rage a release.

Using my path ability Firestarter on the plants over there - let's get some light going for the lesser mortals.

How does Firestarter work? Perhaps you should add the description of your path abilities to your profile?

Tiefling summons his power, but the strange beings seem to be immune to it.

First, the basics of Firestarter are I light stuff in Short range on fire (50 feet at the moment, I think?). Unattended, flammable objects are easy, creatures and harder to light things get a save. I'll throw up the specifics in the other thread later tonight at home, but that's the idea.

Second, I was totally going for the plants on the wall (specifically the moss), not the mushroom men. Maybe that's immune too, but thought I'd mention it.

But why burn it now when Gilian has neutralized their threat? It seems that we can see well enough. And I don't think it is a good idea to burn something on the walls of a very narrow corridor we are currently occupying. Burn damage aside, I hope we don't suffocate if the flames suck all the oxygen out of the air.

Oxygen's for pussies. Suck it up buttercup. ;P

Pussy makes it but co ck does not?

Oh, I thought that you are trying to burn myconids. If you are going for the fungi and moss on the wall, they will burn like dry grass, since Gilian forced them into hibernation.

Instead, Lyj concentrates his will on the fungi and moss growing on the cave wall and burns them to cinders in just a few heartbeats.

male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2

Ragnar watches the scene play out with confusion. He could see his allies falling, but saw nothing strike them. He saw Duncan slap at his neck as if he'd been bit by something, and then charge forward into the darkness. "Go" he says, "Stay with him"

One of the spectral torches flashes down the hall to rest behind and above Duncan, illuminating the battle. Ragnar's eyes go wide at the sight of the strange creatures. With a quick glance to Ilona as the wall bursts into flame without apparent cause, the big Dorn wastes no time rushing to his ally's aid.

Charge closest mushroom with Longspear, don't know how wide the hall is, but I'm planning on keeping behind Duncan supporting with Reach weapon. Trying to hit one that's already been wounded if possible.

"Less beak, more help!" Hugi snaps at her partner. [i]"See if we can wake up those two.

Flapping down to Lyj, the raven begins tugging at his ear.

Raven Spiritual Channeler 5

"Right."Muni clicks, landing on the dwarf's chest. "Wakey, wakey nest-face."

Driving his beak sharply into the Sorok's exposed cheek...

call it a coup de grace with zero chance of killing the target...

max critical damage: 2. Muni can't actually get through Sorok's DR

"Bloody hell," the bird says stumbling back, "His frickin' face is like a walnut!"
