Nightflier's Midnight Game Thread

Game Master nightflier

Set in the grim world of Aryth, Nightflier's Midnight is a game that speaks of almost futile hope that shines against the darkness.

"I am Herald of the Skeleton King. You do not wish to stand in my way, mongrel. Take me to those whose will guide your blade or stand aside."

"No one guides my blade dead thing. You can wait until the rest of my band decides to join us."

Ilona glances over at Solvi. "Felina giving you a report?"

Hearing the exchange, Gilian whispers to all around her:

"This skeleton King may be the master the librarian was referring to. If so he must be quite powerful. Let's get a little information before deciding of our path."

With a louder voice, she adds:
"Chops, stop being so obnoxious and bring that one to us."

" I believe you, but I am still a defender and must help protect my pack. Even futilely."
Gilian wrote:

Chops shouts over his shoulder. "You guys ready? Okay, Harold. I guess they want to meet you." Chops steps out of the skeleton thing's way and allows it to pass. Readied action still is to attack at any sign of aggressiveness.

Ragnar's brows furrow when the Skeleton King is mentioned. He looks to the pair of ravens with an unspoken question.

At Ilona's words, he moves himself to the side of the doorway, out of sight of the hall and quietly readies his spear.

The birds glance at each other, leaning their heads nearly identically.

Have Ragnar or the birds ever heard that name before?

Duncan:
You have heard the name talked about in elven legends, but that is the limit of your knowledge.

"Lady Solvistania", Duncan whispers. "Do you know anything of this Skeleton King? I only vaguely remember him being mentioned in the legends of the Elves, but nothing more."

Knowledge, History 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Knowledge, Spirits 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25

Solvistania concentrates on Duncan's question, sifting through her vast stores of knowledge...

While the herald goes by, Chops tries to think if he has heard of anything like this before.

Herald walks slowly, with measured steps. Now you can see that he is only slightly taller than Ilona and a bit bulkier. He approaches the middle of the central chamber and simply announces: "Who leads you?"

Your rolls will not give you any knowledge of the Herald or his master, since you need to beat DC 35.

Gilian stands, arms crossed, seemingly relaxed at the center of the room.

Under her calm appearance, her fists are tightly closed and positive energy pulse through them.

"I do", she says in a clear voice.

Five foot in front and under the ground, Pebble tenses, ready to intercept anyone trying to harm his mistress

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

Ilona stands about 15ft abreast of Gillian, creating a split focus.

"Direct and to the point, I can appreciate that." she says with a smile. As she speaks shee catches Ragnar's eye, a question about the nature of the messenger hanging in the air.

Duncan is standing about 10 feet from Gilian, on the opposite side, and one step closer to the door than Ilona, with a readied action to strike the Herald if anything goes wrong.

Black knight is silent for a while. "Greetings, Healer. I sense that the Mother's gifts are strong in you. You should not have come to this place. My master seeks wergild for the demise of his servant. He will be satisfied with those two", he nods at Ragnar and Solvi. "Since he lost two."

"Your master may be old and wise, but in this case, he is wrong. First both the Librarian and his servant attacked us and we had to defend ourselves. In this case, it is a well known fact that the offense lies with the aggressors. Second, even if the wergild would be granted by a tribunal, which would not happen, both the Librarian and its servant were dead long before we met them. Which they still are."

"Skeleton King is not bound by any laws but his whim. You have been informed. I shall return in a day and an hour to hear your answer. And when I do return, I shall collect what the King is owed." For a moment he seems to hesitate. "Perhaps you should not be here. If you manage to escape far enough, some of you may yet live." He turns and leaves.

When the Herald indicates Solvistania, Chops starts to shake and his face turns to a grimace. Unconsciously, he takes a step towards the herald, but stops himself. His hands move towards the urutuks that Ragnar made for him. When the messenger leaves, Chops looks to Gilian, sticks a thumb over his shoulder and pats his axe, then nods his head, then shakes his head.

Solvistania watches the Herald leave, her blood red eyes burning with a rage. Her hand twitches, as if she is sending bolts of fiery death into him.

Once he has vanished out of sight, she takes a few calming breaths, and moves closer to Chops. ”I have no desire to become anyone’s wergild. This will end in bloodshed if we are here when he returns.” Her tone leaves no doubt as to who will initiate the hostilities.

Chops places a hand on the small of Solvistania's back. "You are not going to be anyone's wergild while I'm around. Though it seems they are coming after us regardless. We should find a strategic location to meet whatever is sent. One with an exit."

As the herald takes his leave, Gilian smile freezes. Looking down at her feet, she calls forth Pebble.
"Follow him, but stay inside the rock. I want to know which moving room he takes so we know which level he is returning to. But do not take risks, stay within the rock."

With a nod, the little elemental slides back in the rock and runs after the herald.

Nice one. 100 XP.

I'm gonna describe the Herald's path tomorrow. Pebble will need some time to follow him anyway.

As large as the hall is the feeling of pressure, like a building storm seems to rise, unmistakable, a sensation of impending violence that sets those already agitated even more on edge.

Even the calmest members of the group find themselves clenching fists or grinding their teeth as waves of fury wash forth from Ilona.

Almost one can hear the building thunder of a powerful aria echoing through the chamber, as Requiem's violet flames seem to pulse and flare.

"The next time we see that one, he dies....again"

male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2

Ragnar exhaled slowly, audibly letting his tension leave him. Never one to react prematurely, the big Dorn glances around the group nodding to himself as if reminding himself they were still there. Blinking and running his hand over his face, he nods to someone unseen. "I agree"

"I do not believe that one was still living."

[ooc]making assumptions. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Feel free to roll for Ragnar or have him take ten. Posting from my phone makes typing in all the coding and stuff for making rolls a big pain in the butt.[\ooc]

Turning back to the circle in the room, Duncan inspects it closely, attempting to see through the swirling lights, and tries to remember reading or hearing of anything like it.

Duncan:
You are almost sure that you can see someone behind the swirling energies...

"There seems to be a person trapped inside. I think we can assume that this is some sort of Librarian's prisoner. Maybe another one of his "pets" or maybe some poor unfortunate soul still on our side of the undeath. If it is a disobedient fell pet, we should have no problems killing it and laying it to rest. I don't think it is something dangerous that is summoned and then trapped, but we can't be too cautious down here. I'm not well versed in the knowledge of magic, but do any of you know anything of this barrier?" His question is obviously directed primarily at Solvistania, Gilian and Ragnar.

Solvistania stares at the portal, wondering if it would be wise to disrupt it. "Duncan...I do not know if it would be wise to disrupt the portal. But I have a feeling it could be done easily."

NF, I rolled a 28 for the Knowledge, Arcane check, and a 30 for Spellcraft on the previous page. Let me know what Solvi was able to figure out about the barrier.

Solvi:
This thing seems to you as a sort of weak prison that keeps something with outsider blood inside. It is build carelessly, almost as an afterthought, so whatever is inside can't be that powerful.

"I am not sure what the Librarian had imprisoned here, but it certainly is not the one we seek.". She looks at Gilian, "Should we attempt to free whoever is trapped inside?"

"Yes, let's do it. Whatever it is, it may have information about where we are and what we seek."

Taking his sword out as a precaution, Duncan says: "Ok, let us do it. Sorok and Chops, you are with me in the first lines. We are surrounding it before it is dispelled. We are taking no chances."
Once they take their positions, Duncan nods to Gilian and Solvistania and says:"Ladies, be my guest."

Solvistania nods in readiness, and proceeds to dispel the barrier.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

Ilona strides around the perimeter of the portal. As she passes each of her companions she shares a word of support, readiness, a confidence boosting smile, a hand on a shoulder....each little guesture spreading the assuredness that they are prepared for anything.

Casting Assist. Everyone has +2 to skill checks (think spell craft) until one round after Ilona focuses on something else.

Chops draws Liberation and joins the fighters at the perimeter. "I don't like this one bit.", he murmurs.

The barrier suddenly comes silently down under the force of Solvi's spellcasting. Inside it is a circular stone platform that slowly turns around. In the middle of stone circle there are two things: A carved block of stone and a naked person, lying in a fetus position.

"Who are you?", asks Gilian in every language she knows. "And how did you get in here?"

Duncan takes one cautious step towards the body, trying to determine if it is alive or maybe injured, which race does it belong to and whether it is male or female.

Perception1d20+4

Duncan:
You see a person of average height, with an average build to go with it, neither skin and bones nor covered in muscle or fat, but with hair the deep red color of blood. His face is unremarkable, save for two matching scars where his jaw meets his neck.

Seeing that there doesn't seem to be immediate danger from the circle, Chops heads back out to stand in the doorway to stand guard...

Perception 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

...but just can't seem to keep himself from thinking about how to get back on Solvistania's good side. Don't crush any magic items for starters, he thinks.

Not sensing any real threat, Duncan lowers his blade, and steps even closer, taking a couple of seconds to examine the block of stone.
Perception1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

But he is too distracted by the person on the ground that occupies his attention.

Diplomacy1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21

He crouches by the man and gently shakes his shoulder, ready to jump back. "My name is Duncan, and you are free now. The Librarian has been dealt with. Don't mind me asking who are you, and how you ended up like this,"Duncan says with soothing tone sounding friendly and reassuring.

male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2

"Strange..." Ragnar says as he squints at the curled figure. "Like Anang... but more so..."

Solvistania glances at Durathoin as he heads off to guard the group from the approach of the Herald. Something in his walk alerted her something was amiss. She tears herself away from the former prisoner, and walks over to him. She puts a hand on his shoulder, and asks quietly, "Are you concerned about my safety?"

Male Tiefling (Daemon-Spawn) Arcanist 1

The body shudders, and groans. He stirs, slowly at first, then comes to with a jerk. He rolls away suddenly from the warrior leaning over him, and scrabbles to his feet in a defensive crouch. His gaze is wild, and sweeps the room, apparently searching for something he doesn't find. "What..?" he mutters, in Erenlander.

He shakes himself, as if coming to, and seems to get ahold of his faculties. Getting his back against the wall, he looks the newcomers up and down, examining the room closer. Finally, he poses a question in Trader's Tongue, his voice steady and a touch wry, though not without worry. "With any luck, you lot aren't more minions of that psychotic elf." He doesn't appear to be overly concerned about his nakedness, although he keeps his eyes downcast.
