I don't have the dex to be confident with jumping and even if I did in character I'd see it as a waste of effort that would still require my companions to also jump, I have a sword, a sharp one at that, I'm going to use it

Well then you would not get the XP for finding the true cause. Bascially they test his word by finding the little creatures. Which leads you to find the burnt/singed tarot cards. :)

Or it stole some cards and the unluck of just being around the candles started the fire, or it started a fire. It does not state in the module, though that is left up to the DM to finally choose.

There are ways of negating the aura that open up to you later in the game and cool other things but that is further down the road. Wishes and luck and all!

ah, i see. i'm not too mad, as the unluck aura makes sense. one wandered up while the guy was doing the ritual, he had to "roll" twice, and goofed up the ritual (that is, if he didnt mean to sacrifice himself)

that said, it is really annoying to those of us who rely on a lot of skills. i was hoping they were just an enemy at this church. if that is not the case, i REALLY look forward to whatever talismans might protect us from the aura, hah
