This is a great pbp! Navior, TOTALLY love the way you're running this one. It's just awesome! And to all you players, you guys are equally awesome. Good, good group.
Having a good time with this one. You guys just make sure you watch out for those "flappybites". :) LOL! (Douena's my favorite though. She's just great. I also am slightly biased. Sorry.)

Thanks for the praise, Javell! I'm always glad to hear there are people out there reading along and enjoying themselves. I'm having a blast myself!

That may be true but I want to do something to counter the curse I have over me while on watch with an NPC. I figure to garner some good karma by doing something nice for Sasha.
Bring one back for her when she's feeling better. She's not really in a good condition for taking care of an egg right now. When we move camp, we'll be going back by one of the nests or another -- and there certainly doesn't seem to be any shortage of dimorphodons on the island, unless we have just coincidentally crashed within a half-day's journey of the only 2 in existence.

Oh, there are definitely more dimorphodons. You'll probably be sick of dimorphodons by the time we finish this adventure. :)

That was exactly my thinking as well.
By the way, I really enjoy the NPC interactions. It's been one of the more enjoyable aspects of the AP for me so far.
Mahjik the Flink |
@Javell - I agree, Douena's antics occasionally have me in stitches :)
...
But what bad luck on the disease rolls?! Mahjik and Soulwind also nearly succumbed. We might need to add a "rest" day after the coming day (when the onset time is over) when we have 3 sick NPCs on our hands.
Should we have gotten the day's XP? (...not that it could have been a lot ;p)
Navior |
Right, XP! My plan is to award XP at the end of each game day, at least for the duration of this adventure. I will confess though that I have a bit of a bad habit for forgetting to give XP, so if I do, please don't hesitate to remind me! :)
I did award XP for yesterday and the day before, although one or both of those might have been missed. The total XP awarded so far is 895 each.
This day's XP is not huge as Mahjik predicts, but it's still something and you definitely deserve it! You all get 100 XP each, bringing the total awarded to 995.

Hey, Navior, does the book happen to say how heavy Douena's toy boat is? With an 8 Strength, she doesn't have a lot of carrying-capacity leeway, so I have to keep a pretty exact eye on what she's carrying.
No, the book doesn't say. However, it is made from a very light-weight wood, and being a ship, it has a lot of hollow space in it. As such, I really can't see it weighing much, half a pound at most, probably not even that much. Let's say a quarter of a pound.

I would have had a post up last night, by the way -- I'd even started to write it -- except, well, Civ 5. I was up til 4 AM playing it and didn't even realize the time until well after midnight (after which I got into classic "one more turn" syndrome).
I am mortally afraid of that very thing happening to me. I want it but I don't think I have the time to actually play it. How're you liking it so far? Is it an improvement from Civ 4?

Oh, I so want that, except that I'd have to buy a new computer to play it on and can't quite justify that expense yet. How does it compare to Civ IV? I know they changed the combat and got rid of religion, and I heard you can't take over other civ's cities via culture anymore?
Zurai |
4 AM isn't too bad for me since I don't go in to work until after noon, for the record.
Anyway, no, I don't think it's an improvement on Civ 4 as a Civilization franchise game. Not yet, anyway. Give it a few months and some mods and it may get there. It's a decent game in its own right and should be a killer multiplayer online board-game-esque wargame, but the AI is pretty braindead as far as war is concerned.
It's still a good game, and I'm sure I'll keep playing it. At the same time, though, I'm keeping Civ 4 Beyond the Sword on my hard drive.
Joana |
Good to know, since I can't afford to upgrade right now anyway. My laptop barely runs Civ IV; every time another civ contacts me and the negotiation screen is supposed to pop up, there's about a 60-90 second lag where the whole thing freezes up. I love the random events and quests in Beyond the Sword; I thought that was a great addition to the classic Civ platform.
Wander Weir |
I stay as far away from those sorts of games as I can. I know that if I start one, I'll never stop and never get any actual work done. :)
Yeah, from the sounds of it Civ 5 isn't enough of an improvement for me to bother buying. That's good, since I can't afford to stay up all night playing it. :)

- remove diseaseSo there are six of us and five healing potions identified so far. I think we ought to get those potions so that all but one of us have one available to them. The cure moderate should obviously go to one of those who is typically in the forefront of battle and more likely to take damage. Lorenz is happy to stick with a cure light; so far he's been fortunate enough not to get too badly wounded and he's hoping to stick with that.
Since Douena is the healer, does it make sense for her to go without for now?
I think the remove disease ought to be reserved for dire circumstances, in which case it doesn't matter who holds on to that one. But we probably ought to give the four restorations to those who are more likely to get poisoned. As I recall, Aakif has so far attracted a lot of that kind of attention so I'd definitely vote for him to take one for future needs.
Any other ideas about dispersal?
Douena is fine not taking a potion. As far as the restoration potions, give one to each of the fighter-types that are likely to be in melee; that ought to spread them around enough that someone's available to give one to Urza or Douena, should they need it.
Just resurrecting this since it's been inquired about.

The previous night's watches were Lorenz/Sasha, Douena/Makoa, Mahjik/Ishirou, Urza/Gelik, Aakif/Jask.
All right, I believe Urza and Gelik, as arcane casters, both need 8 hours of sleep to renew spells, so they can't take a 4-hour watch. Sasha and Jask are out tonight, so we could pair Lorenz with Aakif and divide the night among 3 groups? Lorenz/Aakif, Douena/Makoa, and Mahjik/Ishirou?
Navior |
Thanks for the reminder! I really am terrible about such things.
While it was not an eventful day in terms of combat or finding things, you still get some XP for NPC dealings. You made some very good progress with Aerys, along with generally improving everyone's attitudes.
So the total for the day is 100 XP each!
Joana |
I have to say, Douena's my favorite PC ever. I never have to pause and think, "What would my character do in this situation?" because she's just so herself it's always obvious. I've only ever played her in PbPs, though; you can do so much more role-playing at a PbP pace than sitting around the table.
Navior |
Some time back, when I was explaining how the NPC attitudes and morale worked, I mentioned that the only way to raise an NPC's attitude all the way to the top was to complete a task particular to each NPC, a task which would have to be figured out in-game. Well, you have now completed Sasha's special task: to get her a pet dimorphodon.
Each NPC has some specialized knowledge that they will be willing to impart to you when you complete their task. In game terms, this amounts to what is essentially a bonus trait. There is no limit to how many of these you can learn (well, up to the limit of 5 NPCs), although some of them are more appropriate for certain classes than they are for others. Yes, this is a very generous little power-up that the adventure offers! :)
In Sasha's case, anyone who spends 8 hours practicing with her gains a permanent +1 bonus to Initiative rolls. This is an untyped bonus, so will stack with other bonuses to Initiative (training with her twice, however, will not stack).
Oh, and you also get some bonus XP which will be added on to the total when I hand out the day's XP. :)
