Yeah, I remember thinking a little, "Wow!" since at that time even Sasha didn't know what her special task was (not that she ever really sees it in those terms). If you had brought an egg back that very first day, I was all set to write a post saying something along the lines of "Congratulations! You've just succeeded in an NPC task without even knowing you were doing it!" :)

Nope. Makoa was raised by a wolf pack, so it seemed natural to want someone or something to hunt with. Also, catching fish just got easier.

That makes sense. But what was it that made you think of Sasha for that? That's the part that really threw me off.

She volunteered to go hunting. Why would someone who wasn't hunting need a hunting companion?

Nifty! I definitely want to do that. The tricky part will be finding 8 hours to train with her.

Guess we'll have to spend a day in camp? I can't imagine anyone not wanting a +1 initiative bonus.

I have this weird image of all of us lined up in a row, duplicating special movements Sasha leads us in, like a group of people doing tae chi on a hill.

In my game I had them racing to beat the leashed, semi-tame dimorphodon across a clearing while being chased :P.

(yes I still lurk here :P)

So Lorenz is taking his next level in bard, right? ;)

That's a pretty darned amusing image as well!

It's tempting! :) But no, I'll just give him a rank in Performance.

Ooh, sexy bards! Did you hear that, Lorenz? Might make Sasha sit up and take notice. ;)

Nah, I don't think Lorenz is bestial enough for Sasha's interest. ;)

I know this is heavily off-topic, but I wanted to let you know anyway :) - I've just posted a new archetype for the paladin on 10letter; the martyr. Features lament (a form of holy rage) and stigmata (a form of divine bond). You're invited to have a look and let me know what you think. :D

Suggestions and help welcome!

That was definitely an entertaining moment (yep, I'm still lurking on yours, too). Alas, that won't work with this group as the dimorphodon aka flappybite is still in egg form, and while I plan to have it hatch relatively soon, even then it won't be big enough for anything like that. I'm still deciding how I'm going to handle the training.

Joana wrote:
All right, I believe Urza and Gelik, as arcane casters, both need 8 hours of sleep to renew spells, so they can't take a 4-hour watch. Sasha and Jask are out tonight, so we could pair Lorenz with Aakif and divide the night among 3 groups? Lorenz/Aakif, Douena/Makoa, and Mahjik/Ishirou?

Shall we stick with a 3-watch system and let Sasha sleep all night? Or go back to 5 watches with someone doubling up?

Do we need to train with Sasha for 8 hours straight, or can they be parceled out here and there? If it's the first, that'll cause scheduling problems for sure unless we just take a day off. If it's the second, we can just train a bit every day in camp before we leave and after we come back and get it in a week or two.

It's okay to spread it out within reason. You will need to train in at least 1-hour increments.

If my count is right, we have 1448 xp. That makes us 2nd level right?

Dax Thura wrote:

Actually, you should be at 1508. I've been a bit inconsistent with where I've awarded XP. Some of it has been awarded in this OOC thread, and some in the main thread. However, I've now added it to my template for the evening/morning die-roll marathon, so it will be consistently awarded with that at the end of each game day.

That said, the amount needed for second level is 2000 xp. We're using the medium XP chart, so there's still a little way for you all to go. But you're three quarters there! :)

I look forward to Aakif actually being able to show people just why he was exiled :)

Right now, the spirits are being awful quiet. Once he hits level 2, he's grabbing Spirit Totem, and then things are gonna get interesting in the camp...

Seems like most of us are changing in big ways at level 2!

Makoa: Barbarian -> Wolf Totem Druid(Thinking about the Domain instead of a animal companion)
Aakif: Barbarian -> Spirit Totem
Douena: Cleric -> Rogue(?)

There's something wildly appropriate (and highly amusing) about Ishirou being partnered up with one of the most vocal of the party members during watch. Well, barring Lorenz. And Douena.

I'm pretty excited for our characters too! Maybe two or so days in-game time are enough to level. And then nothing can stop us! muahahaha I'm curious to see what will happen with the monk good as levels pass.

@Lorenz: *applause* "Bravo! Bravo!" As the crowd of thousands scream while giving a standing O to the Great Lorenz and his fantastic story! *continued applause*

This is one of THE most excellent threads I've read. Obviously I've not read them all but this one continues to rock! Shakes head in disbelief how a thread can be this awesome.

@Makoa: Dude! Why don't you put things back when you're done with them! What were you, raised by wolves?! ;) (Sorry, couldn't resist. Mainly cuz I hear this a lot personally. Not sure why. Hm? It's a mystery.) :)

We now return to your regularly scheduled progamming: "Douena and The Quest for the Flappybites."
Starring:
Douena "I have a plan" Trestleben
Makoa "Big bitey guy" Wolf'sKin
Lorenz "I'm better than y'all" Aeryson
Urza "I must eat everything" Sha'rahad
Aakif "My holy day takes all dang day" and last, but not least,
Mahjik "I'm gonna be a good mime one day" the Flink.

:)

Ah, I should make that more obvious. The idea is that similar to a rage, the benefits last during the lament. Thanks for pointing that out, I'll rephrase it to make it more obvious :)

Just to let you guys know, I'm leaving tomorrow for vacation (yay!). I don't go anywhere without a computer so I'll be posting still but not quite as frequently as I usually do. There should definitely be at least one (probably two) posts a day however. They'll just be in the mornings and/or evenings instead of throughout the day.

Thanks for the heads-up

LOL!

I should also add one other to this mighty group: (Stupid of me not to do it earlier)

Navior "THE Master of Many Roles"

I believe it was Wander who mentioned earlier in this thread about the interaction between the PC's and the NPC's. Totally agree. It's excellent. An amazing job on running the NPC's. It truly feels like an 11 pc adventure. Instead of 6 pc's and "those 5 redshirts are still here? How do we get rid of them?" type thing.

As tough as it seems to run that many NPC's at once, it really does look like a lot of fun.

Continued great gaming. :)

Agreed, major props to our DM on this game!

All:
Don't tell the other DM's, but I think he's my favorite so far!

Also, check under "Occupation" in Makoa's profile.

Aw shucks guys. You're too kind. Blush.

I'm really glad people are enjoying the game. I always like to make NPCs as fully fleshed-out and three-dimensional as I can. I like them to come across like real people (without stealing the PCs' thunder, of course). It's particularly important in this adventure, I think. The NPC castaways are what distinguish it from a run-of-the-mill explore-the-exotic-island adventure. Without them, the adventure would be in many ways just a rehash of the Isle of Dread. Not that the Isle of Dread wasn't a decent module for its time. Just the addition of the NPCs in this one help to give it an extra dimension.

Thanks again for all the kind words! I will endeavour to keep the adventure just as fun, interesting, and exciting. There's lots of great stuff to come!

Going to the baseball game this afternoon. Will be out until later tonight (maybe much later, depending on traffic).

The effort definitely shows. I try to make Mahjik be (N)PC agnostic; meaning I try to pretend that I don't know who is a PC/NPC when I post. This isn't entirely possible; but every bit of effort counts, no? :)

@Navior:

I'm curious, do the NPCs feature similarly in each of the PDFs - by that I mean, is there a "Sasha Quest + Reward", etc in each PDF? That would be kinda cool :D

No worries. I've been busy much of today as well and will actually be pretty busy all weekend. Yesterday was my wife's birthday, so we had people over to celebrate today. This weekend is also Canadian Thanksgiving, so I've got family commitments tomorrow. I'll still be posting, but the posts will be a little more sporadic than usual.

Well, I can't speak for the last 4, since they're not available yet, but I have to admit that I am somewhat disappointed by the way the second adventure handles the NPCs from the first adventure. They're mentioned early on and in some cases (Ishirou is a good example) in ways that don't really seem to fit that character. Then they're pretty much forgotten about. After building them up in the first adventure, it would have been nice to see a bit more attention paid to them in the second.

However, I'm going to be modifying a few things in the second adventure when we get to it, as there are some other things about it that I'm not overly keen on as well. I'm hoping the last four adventures will return to the quality of the first.

I have just noticed a small problem with my plans for Makoa: He's wearing studded leather armor.

That's a big no-no for druids.

I'm sure there's a nice armor shop somewhere on this island, if only we can find it, right?

At least you're Medium. If we run across any humanoids, their gear is ripe for the looting. When you're running a Small character, you have to figure you're not going to get to upgrade armor/weapons unless you buy new stuff somewhere.

*hopes for a tribe of cannibal halflings on the island*

There's bound to be a tribe of head shrinking pygmies somewhere. :)

I just realized something: is it possible for our camp to experience a random encounter while we are out adventuring?

Yeah, I thought about that on the first day: coming back to find the camp empty and ransacked, some bloodstains....

Not that it wouldn't be fun to have to track down whatever took the NPCs and try to rescue them, especially now that we've "bonded."

LoreKeeper wrote:

Yeah, no kidding. Not a chance that they strand us on a deserted island and don't have cannibal pygmies.

Of course, you might not want to investigate the type of leather the pygmy armor is made of...
