You might be in for a break from this game once this permutation resolves!
It might give us more time to discuss which permutation we might like to see, possibly including some of the newer roles and to recruit the game size of people we would like to get!
****NO offense to our current crew!
You could extend cycles (several people seem to get a kick out of more time to RP their characters)....
(but others might get picked on for infrequent posts! )
There is no answer! We are all doomed!
Sutra d'Ethaline
To be honest I think 15-20 would be perfect, allowing everyone to get to know each other but not too many players so we don't know every PC & once you get kicked out you don't have to wait too many months for the next one.
'Cause there is still maybe 4+ cycles left in this one.
I am not sure about extending cycles, maybe have the first one be longer. But if they are all a week it can get either repetative, aimless or the entire thread take many months. I think it's great how each game has a different theme and it changes the tone.
Back on topic, I am on the edge of my seat with this!
"Jin"
This is my first and only experience with this type of game (loving it), but I like having the cycles go twice a week -- it gives you enough time to think of your vote and RP your character a bit. Longer cycles would drag I think (especially when it gets down to the last few, like now).
Though, I REALLY like the idea of the first cycle being longer - it would be nice to have everyone get introduced and into character... kinda like a dinner party before you find the first body dead :)
Taraz the Wastrel
I feel the cycles are long enough already, lol. I almost feel like I am overwhelming the thread with my frequent posts, heh.
I do agree it would be nice if the first cycle could be longer. Maybe it should be the equivalent of two cycles starting off.
One thing I admit wish could be included is some kind of clue. It often feels since people can post whatever they want and it has no 'game effect' relevance, that there really is no way to logically deduce anything. I do enjoy the roleplaying, but I feel there is more luck involved than anything.

This would be interesting -- would really add to the deductive reasoning in the game.

Only clue I could think of might have to be something Ryuko includes at the end of a cycle, I have no idea mechanically what that might look like.
Good discussion topic though.
My point was to give our nice DM a break ;), maybe between adventures is the best solution.
In this one the computer updates could be used for clues, the question is how?
Here is how my death was reported:
The Duke is eventually voted into being lynched. Realizing he must be doomed, he suddenly throws himself down the nearest chute, hoping it leads to the food dispensary. It in fact leads to the incinerator.
"9 Sentient Beings Detected. 1 Scanning Device Detected. 2 Council Agents Detected. 2 Mutants Detected." The absence of one being is obvious after a moment.
Theon's body is never found.
Duke Leto was Lynched. He was a Citizen. Theon Smith was killed. He was the Militant.
Cycle 4 Begins now and ends Monday.
Could Theon's body not being found indicate some clue?
Should we have followed up?
Ryuko
Damnit. The computer did indeed miscount
I'm just not having the best day lol.
The clue idea is an interesting one... but ultimately seems to be a bad idea. Really the game is supposed to be about paranoia and fear. Traps, sneaks and lies are the clues. When someone claims one thing and something else comes to light you have to ask, did Person 1 lie to me or did Person 2 lie to them. How much of this can I reveal to Person 3 who may be a mutant?
Taraz the Wastrel
I suppose there's an assumption that a lot of private communication is occurring that would let people do this lying and dealing. As one who has received a total of maybe 2? PMs this whole game, I only have the thread posts to "deduce" the killers. And of course, that's completely unreliable, lol.
I like deductive stuff, so I just threw it out there for consideration. I realize it would probably be difficult to pull off since you would have to make it subtle enough that it doesn't give away the farm, heh heh.

It seems only those with special skills have "clues." And in this game (I don't know about the others) all the ones with skills seemed intent on staying hidden in a futile attempt to save themselves.
Perhaps they are PM'ing each other madly with lots of wheeling and dealing behind the scenes, and we ordinary civilians will never know.
The only real clues left to ordinary civilians is... who was gung ho to kill innocents? who angled for ties (under the -unproven to my thinking- theory that ties help mutants)? and who was reticent to kill the mutant?
Some useless advice from one who couldn't live one round (but had fun anyway.)
And per a previous topic, I may play OCiD's relatives... like ADiD next game.
Have fun....

Yep, Sutra talking so much probably led to her down-fall.
The funny thing is that no-one has actually ever declared a helpful option or really lied to the group about their role.
With pm's it's all about luck and hoping for trust. Last game when Hamish/Doug pm'd me, he had no clue to if he could actually trust me and it even led to him detecting Vorian as a villain after telling him that he was the scanner.
Although I did find when I was the killer, I felt I was accidentally dropping clues all over the place. Which I am sure happens all the time with the werewolf/mutant.
Meowselsworth
It's my first time playing a game like this, and so far it's been a blast! I've been trying to do the statistical analysis, but I'm kind of stuck on a way to mathematically model the voting (though I was just trying to analyze for the two strategies: only vote when scanners detect, and always vote). Once you throw in militants and agents, it gets all crazy. Without any scanners, of course 'always vote' is the dominant strategy, but it changes if you add more scanners (the militant however should /always/ protect someone, even at random, so that role at least has some predetermined logic).
Hamish Cunningham
Thanks for all the positive comments regarding my character everyone.
I like the game being played out just the way it is. The game is already designed to be balanced. If you do a Google search you can easily find statistics that go through the game mechanics and prove this. A clue would give the Civilians an unfair advantage over the Mutants.
I agree that first round could be longer. I always feel bad for the first ones out. I'd even say that making it 2 weeks would be a solid start. After that we could return to normal cycles.
Professor Devries mentioned last game that there are a lot of variant roles for this game. I wouldn't mind exploring some of those at some point. I cant remember who brought up The Lovers, but I though that one was neat. There are a few other good ones too.

While I hardly think more time would have made people more fond of OCiD, it still would have been fun to interact a little longer. I wonder if one free scan for each scanner before the lynchings start would be too unbalancing.
Maybe balance it by giving one mutant a chance to find his fellow... no deaths, just a chance to i.d.
The first lynching seems strange because there is absolutely nothing to base a judgement on, except unlikability. And usually the villains are too clever to be loud and unlikable. (Right Wastrel?)
So if the first round was info gathering only for both teams...

Sorry for the broken posting guys. I don't think I'm going to be able to handle posting on a schedule with my current lifestyle, meaning I won't really be able to run one of these after this one. I hope someone else will keep the tradition going, but I'm afraid this will be my last one for a while.
Taraz the Wastrel
Sorry to hear it. Life takes precedence naturally. Hopefully, things will even out for you soon.
Besides, I had hoped that the delay would allow people to feel guilty about lynching the innocent Taraz. Again!! Lol!
Good luck Jin, Wowbagger, and Meowselsworth. May the results favor the cleverest.
Taraz the Wastrel
Random thought...unless it would be a hardship for folks to get to their computers, what if the cycles started long and got shorter and shorter as the game goes on?
I have been wondering how this game might go with a secret ballot system as well, and the GM just periodically shows the tally but no one would know who's voting for who.
"Jin"
I think both ideas are interesting.
I think as the number of players gets lessened, you need less and less time between votes. I know the last few cycles have been painfully long -- but maybe that was just the suspense more than anything (I think I refreshed these pages a hundred times last night and this morning, lol)
The secret ballot method would really change things up. You would never know who was voting and how... I know that a lot of the game is played based on voting tendancies -- that makes a huge change to the game -- I'd assume that people would still RP their votes and just pm them to the ref, but the players would never know who's lying or not.
I think the scryers and agents would become much more powerful, but I fear all others would feel weaker.
But then again, this is my first time playing this, so what do I know lol! :)
Ryuko. Seconding Taraz's comment: Real Life comes first. Good Luck with everything -- I've REALLY enjoyed this game. Thanks for running it!
Taraz the Wastrel
Another twist that might be interesting: the game only starts off with one werewolf/mutant/vampire/shapeshifter/whatever, but if s/he's killed, one random player is infected and becomes the new antagonist. This would continue depending on number of players exceeding the threshold. Then if the final "number" is killed, the citizens win.
Sir Jiminy
I like the idea of the rounds getting shorter, combined with the first round being longer. Maybe start out with the first round being 6 days, the second and third rounds being 4 days, then each subsequent round is 2 days.
Right now 6 rounds takes three weeks. With the above structure 6 rounds would also take three weeks, but keep more of the players in the game for the first two weeks of that and then have a quick and furious finish in the last week or so.

We have lots of options for someone running a game like this, I personally hope someone else (ieeee not me) steps up.
In a way I would like the game to remain the same, except maybe some of the alternate roles....
....the witch is interesting (restore one person/kill one person)
Too many changes all at once is bad mojo!

This is exactly what I was thinking.
If Meowselworth (or other) would like to take over, be my guest. I have some experience backing me though which might make me a more suitable candidate.
If a handful of you convince me I'll do it.
Ryuko, would you consider being a player?
Sutra d'Ethaline
And I think the voting for lynching has to be open. That way there are fewer hard feelings, betrayals and it doesn't turn into Diplomacy! :P
A subtle variant would be quite interesting too, with different roles. Ryuko has done an amazing job keeping everything random and interesting backgrounds/scenario's. With the changing roles for each game, being another boon that helps each game have it's own feel.
It would have been really great to have had 15 players for those roles, the balance between killers/innocents is delicate.
Taraz the Wastrel
...Taraz's actions were so pro mutant...
Lol, if you are just RPing then I forgive you. Otherwise, I can give you quite a long explanation as to why my suggestion for the Agents to reveal themselves would only have benefited the survivors these last two rounds.
Regardless, I will say that this game has come to a nail-biting ending. We ghosts have talked and the theories I have heard make the final post from Ryuko much more heavily anticipated than any other, heh heh.
