Groggy but free from his bonds Farid stands in the pit and sees Ki'dhir gone! Abandoned again it seems. Now I must free myself else all is lost! He too begins to make his way to freedom. He hears the sounds of conflict around him but until he can ascertain what is happening, climbing must be his focus.

Emilia stabs again at Ekram, but the leader of the Silver Chain swats away her blow with an angry snarl and a vicious curse aimed at the halfling. Hasina swings her heavy flail at the cultist bearing the mask, but a shimmering field surrounding the robed man deflects her weapon away – if just barely! Francis continues to hold the rope with a firm grip, grateful he can actually see at least one of the men climbing swiftly toward him as he calls out for the fellow to hurry. Sefanit is hard-pressed by an enemy in her face, but the witch keeps her cool and continues to cackle, mocking the superficial wound in her side as she focuses on the masked cultist that dealt her the injury.

The cleric hears the whispered words of the invisible prisoner he helped to haul up whisper his thanks next to his ear as Ki’dhir gains the lip of the well and turns to cast a spell upon the cultists, bathing the two nearest in burning flames! One of them shrieks in pain and catches afire, falling into the well and narrowly missing Farid at the bottom where the unfortunate cultist smashes to the ground and continues to burn where he lies. The other avoids most of the flames but it badly burned across his shoulders and chest. Avoiding the burning body of the slain cultist, Farid begins to climb the rope as well, taking his time and focusing on the task at hand.

The cultists counterattack, two of them focusing on Hasina and one of them draws blood while the other steps back and emulates Ki’dhir, casting a spell that washes his foes with fire – though the result is not nearly as devasting. Ekram continues his assault on the halfling, though his efforts are hampered terribly by Sefanit’s annoying cackling and Emilia avoids both of the heavy blows!

Party is up! I need Reflex saves from Sefanit, Francis and Emilia (Ki’dhir has fire resistance 5, so he is fine). Hasina, to use that Cleave feat, your two targets must be adjacent to each other and to you, so it didn’t quite work out for this round since there is a 5’ gap between them. I’m also thinking your attack bonus is +9 instead of +10 – but let me know if I’m wrong. Ki’dhir, I moved you onto a regular map square so that Farid can get clear of the well next round. And lastly, wow… two crits against Emilia and neither one connects due to the Misfortune. Bad luck for my bad guy indeed!

Ekram easily dodges Emilia’s thrust as the halfling continues to taunt the leader of the Silver Chain while avoiding the sweeping flames of the cultist’s burning hands spell. Hasina’s heavy flail smashes into the thug’s side, eliciting a yelp of pain and anger as the sound of breaking ribs can be heard. Francis is scalded by the flames, though Sefanit manages to evade the worst of the fiery blast.

The wounded swordsman slashes at Hasina again, his blade striking true even as the cultist gets past the defenses of the badly wounded warrioress and strikes her down with a thrust through the middle of her back! Ki’dhir casts a spell, lowering his defenses for a brief instant, but the hexed cultist is unable to take advantage and then is dropped when three magical bolts explode into his chest, knocking him backward to the floor where he lies unmoving even as the sorcerer steps over the body, circling around the pit to get behind Ekram. In the meantime, Farid climbs up out of the pit, standing above the prone body of Hasina as he too prepares to take action. As Ekram screams in frustration and anger as he is unable to penetrate the halfling’s stout defense (and his own sudden ineptness!)

Emilia leaves off on her taunting for the moment and decides to focus on her already formidable defense instead of pressing the attack as she draws her light mace, waving it at the unarmed prisoner who just scampered up out of the well. Hasina regains her composure and manages to draw a potion from her belt pouch as pain lances through her body. Francis uses the dagger he had tried to offer the prisoner and uses it instead to stab at the cultist that dropped Hasina, his slim blade piercing the flesh of the masked man, who grunts in pain at the fresh wound. Sefanit isn’t done with her witchy magic yet, and she tries to pin Ekram’s shadow to the ground and succeeds in doing so!

The bad guys turn away from the apparently fallen Hasina, the cultist attacking Francis while the the muscled thug swings at Emilia though neither are successful in their attempts to inflict harm. Ki’dhir unleashes another devastating burning hands upon Ekram and the thug – both of whom are immolated as they scream in pain before dropping to the floor, their flesh charred black and raising an awful stink.

Ki'dhir leaves the fate of the remaining thug to his rescuers, offering no opinion or judgement. He takes a moment to stretch his back and shoulders, loosening the knots caused by the beatings and confinement. Suddenly conscious of his bedraggled appearance and stink, he wipes away much of the accumulated grime, dirt, and blood with a small spell.

Feeling a measure more human, the nomad bows politely to his saviors and offers a strangely fluid looping hand gesture that briefly touches his forehead, lips, and heart. "I thank you for my life. Hearing the query from the previous prisoner Francis keeps his attention on the cultist but answers, "You assisted us greatly. We will locate your equipment and rescue the other man from the pit once this prisoner has chosen. After that I'd like to ask you to join with us. We face great trials yet in this town and you have shown valuable skills that we need."

If the cultist accepts, Hasina can lower someone into the pit to untie the other prisoner (Ptemenib or Ptenimb?) and retrieve the CLW wand. Francis will use the wand to cure folks once he gets it back. Then we can continue exploring this place! We will need some treasure to afford another CLW wand!

Sefanit is standing not far away from Emilia and Ki'dhir, engaged with Kushifalhikma, who is resting on her hand.

"Listen to all that over who got to kill the man and claim the credit Kushi. As if someone weren't assuring they fought him with somewhat more than one of his hands tied behind his back. The poor villain was practically crippled by fate as they picked him apart wasn't he?"

It almost looks as if the scorpion makes a shrugging gesture with her pinchers and shakes her head sadly.

With the matter of honor settled, Ki'dhir rises and says lightly. "Who am I to stand in the way of one destined to carve her reputation into legend?"

At Sefanit's comment, he glances over at her. Then he looks again, both at the scorpion with which she converses and at her intriguing freckled skin tone. She was, at least in some part, Garundi. He briefly smooths the firmly-entrenched wrinkles in his robe before offering her a respectful bow. "Blessed day, sayyidah. I am Ki'dhir... of the Yerbira. Do I misunderstand you that you are a Fatespinner?"

"Nice to meet you Ki'dhir. I'm Sefanit Batinayad. I am a historian and linguist by profession. As for the rest... It's something I can't quite explain myself. Sometimes I think Kushifalhikma here is the Fatespinner, and I'm her instrument. Sort of like a magnifying glass."

Ki'dhir considers her words carefully. "Magic is not as simple as some might think. How much of it is purely will, or blood, or a magnifying glass?" He takes a step closer to the witch and regards her scorpion in a new way. "If it interests you - when time permits - I would enjoy hearing about your magical path."

Deflecting away from the awkward request, he quickly adds, "Linguist and historian? You must be very well educated. Were you at a University?" He says the last word with a dollop of reverence. "I don't have a profession. Sometimes, I act as a guide for outlanders to ensure they survive the desert."

"Emilia von Happledonk, don't you forget it." She gave him a wide grin and laughed a bit. As he went to go talk to Sefanite, she went over to the well that had the cleric in it and looked into it. "He's been rather quiet. Wonder if he's alive or not down there."

Francis smiles at Emilia as he gathers the rope again and hands it to Hasina. "Hasina can pull him up if he's still alive but he may need help with his bonds and might need healing before even attempting to pull him up. I dropped our curing wand so he could use it but let's see his status and decide how we are to extract him."

Any chance he was in range when I used my last channel? If he is conscious but tied we can send Emilia down. He can use the wand if needed. If he's unconscious Hasina can lower me and I'll recover the wand and use it as needed, and cut any ropes on him.

Emilia nodded a bit before going over to Francis side. "Just send me down. I can cut the bonds and heal him if need be. Plus, extra light, easier on whoever holds the rope."

Ki’dhir magically cleans the stains of battle from his robes and then engages in a conversation with Emilia as Francis uses his own magic to treat the wounds of his friends and the strangers – including the enemy prisoner. As Ki’dhir speaks with Sefanit after making amends with the halfling with regards to honorable combat, Francis Hasina and Emilia see to the needs of the captive still down in the well while Farid guards the disarmed prisoner, with the shortsword and dagger taken from the cultist until his own weapons are secured from wherever they were taken.

Leaning over the well, the group sees that the man they presume to be the Pharasmin priest named Ptemenib is still bound and gagged at the bottom of the pit – though his eyes reflect relief as he can see that his rescuers were triumphant in the battle he certainly must have heard raging up here. Emilia offers to head down into the well to help release the prisoner from his bonds, which she does quite easily given her natural climbing ability and the fact that she can take her time in making the descent.

While the others deal with Ptemenib and help the elderly cleric up out of the well, Ki’dhir and Sefanit gather the loot and gear from the fallen enemy and they both use their magic to seek magical auras, finding to their great delight that the khopesh wielded by Ekram does indeed glow with an enchantment perhaps tied to the unique reddish tint borne by the hooked steel blade. In fact, Sefanit is able to identify the sword as a Natron Fang - quite effective against the undead, especially mummies and incorporeal horrors. By the time this operation is finished, the elderly cleric has been brought up to the floor of the room and Francis, having retrieved his healing wand, goes about taking care of injuries as Emilia and Hasina free Ptemenib of his bonds.

The dark-skinned Pharsmin rubs his wrists and ankles, wincing at the pain until Frances relives him of that with the curative wand. The older man breathes a deep sigh of relief, then climbs to his feet wearily, obviously at the very brink of exhaustion despite his injuries being healed. “Thank you, my friends. May I ask how you found me?” He takes a second look at Hasina, then at Frances. “I recall seeing the two of you in the auction house earlier this night. Or am I mistaken?”

Ki’dhir, go ahead and give me a Spellcraft check to figure out the same information about that magical khopesh - or just rely on Sefanit to relate it to you. Besides the magical sword, Sefanit and Ki’dhir also collect a few valuables from the bodies of Ekram and the thug, which are distributed among the party as rightfully won loot, including a key that looks about the size used to open a door and a suit of leather armor that radiates magic. Among the remains (and the live prisoner) of the masked cultists are found a flask filled with a liquid that radiates magic, three magical cloaks, 3 spellbooks, a scroll, a small vial filled with a nasty looking oil, and various other more mundane equipment that could fetch a decent amount of gold in the marketplace. The spellcasters take a bit of time to look them over for magical auras and come up with a few positive results.

Spellcraft Checks:

Sefanit’s Spellcraft Check: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28 [Leather Armor] = Success!
Sefanit’s Spellcraft Check: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18 [Cloak] = Failure!

Ki’dhir’s Spellcraft Check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23 [Cloak] = Success!

Ptemenib grins at Emilia’s words. “Ahhh… where would I be without Qasin? A poor excuse for an old priest, that is most certain. And likely doomed to rot in the bottom of that well in addition.” The bearded man shoots a withering look at the cultist before continuing, responding to Francis after the cleric heals his allies and the old priest as well. “Yes, I will gratefully accept your help in locating my equipment. I do not know what the new master of the Silver Chain did with my gear, but perhaps it is in his private chambers beyond the door there.”

Heading into Ekram’s quarters, the party finds the place to be decorated with a number of finely crafted antique furniture from many different periods of history and that the smell of rich food hangs in the air. Books and charts crowd one cedar table, while a half-finished banquet of fruit and roasted meats sits on another. A living area dominated by a large and very comfortable-looking bed fills the southern portion of the room, along with a large iron chest and a smaller wooden one as well as a desk cluttered with writing instruments, papers and a handful of odd curios.

The prisoner is forced to sit upon the nearby couch, guarded closely by Farid and Hasina as the others move into the room to investigate the place more closely...

We'll take everything that is magical and valuable. Leave the studded leather armor through the darts on the list. For the rogues kits the only things worth the weight might be the thieves tools and mirrors, if anyone knows where we could sell such items. Thoughts from anyone else?

The cultist looks uneasy at Ki'dhir's question. "It's a handy spell to have sometimes..." He answers defensively, "...especially in our line of work. Disguising a mummy to look like a fresh corpse has saved us from the guards of the Mausoleum more than once." He casts a guilty glance at Ptemenib, who stares hard at the cultist when he makes that particular confession. But the old cleric is soon distracted by Sefanit's warm greeting and the fellow hurriedly explains that on the far side of the entry hall is a storage room that contains a good many treasures they have stolen over the years, though anything they'd identified as particularly valuable has already been sold. There is also an old laboratory on that side, once used by the Silver Chain's former leader - whose body was left in his favorite retreat where he fell. But the cultist warns that a poisonous gas seems to hang perpetually in the chamber and it has been boarded over. Lastly, the loading dock is beyond both of those rooms, where two other members of the Silver Chain guard the dock along with a trained hyena. Apparently they are the only gang members left at present.

Those not interrogating the prisoner poke around and find the old cleric's equipment - as well as those of Ki'dhir and Farid - in the smaller wooden chest that was easily opened. But the bigger iron one is securely locked, and the key held by Ekram doesn't seem to fit it - apparently it is meant for a larger keyhole, like that of a door perhaps. They also find that one of the tables holds a quill pen, a vial of ink, and several small slips of blank parchment, along with a curious figurine of a bird made out of tin, with three actual feathers forming its tail - though a brief inspection of the statuette reveals space for four feathers; one is clearly missing. Other than those items of interest, the food looks and smells delicious. The cultist assures the party that it is quite edible, as he and the others had been eating prior to the arrival of the adventurers, and the evidence present seems to indicate this is the truth.
