Flicking with her buckler, she knocked the blow aside and grinned at the bandit. Drawing her arm back, she quickly stabbed forward at the bandit before sliding back a few steps, making kissing noises with her mouth. "Come on boy, come on, I gotta treat for you, yes I do!"

Emilia stabs at the thug, but her sword glances off the cured leather cuirass and the dusky, bearded man grins nastily at the halfling as she taunts him, moving in for what he believes will be an easy kill. Herdouck slashes at the guardsman in front of him, who manages to dodge the blow, despite his shock. The dwarf sees a small, empty room behind the door – a table with an open book lying atop tells the paladin that the man was probably reading alone when the raised voices of his comrades alerted him to the danger. Francis drops his wand and draws a dagger, the priest’s blade penetrating through the leather armor and into the thug’s side, drawing blood and a grunt of pain. Sefanit stares hard at the bandit in front of Francis, her witchy eyes drawing his gaze and thrusting severe doubt into his mind, affecting him deeply. Hasina steps in with her heavy flail, wielding the weapon admirably and with tremendous strength, likely breaking a couple of ribs of the one wounded by Francis as well as the thug beguiled by Sefanit.
But the guardsmen retaliate, moving in and stabbing with their own short blades while two more appear from around the corner, rubbing sleep from their eyes even as they take firm grip of their own swords. But only Hasina takes a minor wound in the exchange.

Emilia taunts the big warrior, her blade biting into his stomach and the wounded man falls with a pained groan. Herdouck maneuvers to get on the other side of the thug, though his attack is parried by his foe’s weapon. Francis pulls another wand and aims at the bandit on Emilia’s flank and calls out, using his wand to instill terror in the man. The tactics works, and the thug screams shrilly and turns to run! Sefanit sees the wand’s magic take hold of her target and shifts her attention to the one fighting the dwarven paladin, though the thug doesn’t seem affected by her nasty laughing. Hasina swings her heavy flail at her own unfortunate foe, caving in his skull in gruesome fashion!
As one guardsman flees through the nearby double doors, drawing an attack from Emilia, the others close in for battle, focusing their attention on the dangerous Hasina, who is struck a minor wound by one of the thugs, though her armor protects her from the blade of the other, just as Herdouck’s own armor protects him from the bandit’s attack, though the dwarf’s foe maneuvers as well, keeping his back to the open corridor behind him instead of toward Herdouck’s allies.

Party is up! That ‘Blue’ thug moved and opened the double doors, but hasn’t yet moved through them. Sefanit, figured you wouldn’t want to waste that hex on a bandit about to take to his heels, so had you shift to the next most threatening thug – hope that’s OK! Hasina’s well-aimed blows drop the thug in front of her and the remaining ones decide that this isn’t really their fight after all. One pauses for a moment after opening the door, as though regaining his senses, then with a look over his shoulder continues through with his plan of fleeing, though he is no longer influenced by the spell imbued in Francis’ wand. The thug facing Herdouck makes a quick feint with his weapon, then turns and retreats, leaping nimbly over the open pit before booking for freedom up the stairs. With an outraged roar, the dwarf charges after him. The last one facing Hasina drops his weapon and scowls as he raises his hands. “Wasn’t my battle anyway. Damned if I’ll die for that bastard Ekram.”

Whew, still trying to get into a rhythm here folks. Maybe tax season ending will help. In any case, combat is done and I’ll probably just write out Herdouck to an unknown fate after he chases that thug into the streets of Wati. The four characters remaining are a good balance I think, and should do just fine. Combat is over for the moment and you have a prisoner – perhaps even one of the malcontents that the thug you captured earlier advised you might meet.

Hasina Haqikah |

Hasina had forgotten her wound and smiles her thanks at Francis as he heals her.
"We can't let him go, I think we should just kill him and be done with it." She says this loudly so the prisoner hears her.
Hasina looks as menacing as possible, hoping that we get some information from him, but serious in not letting him go. She is thinking about tieing him up and knocking him out before we continue on.

It doesn't take much to intimidate the surviving thug, who yelps as the halfling pokes him with the sword - though his eyes are fixed on the imposing red-haired warrioress even as Francis gives her some much needed healing after retrieving his dropped wand. "Hey yeah, look I'll tell you what I know. I promise! But uh... you might want to move quick if you want to catch Ekram by surprise, cause sure as hell Fahan is going to warn him right now." The dark-haired man gestures at the door through which the other surviving bandit fled just moments earlier.

Let me know what you want to do. This fellow seems to be telling you you'll need to move fast if you want to catch Ekram with any element of surprise - though he might be just covering his own butt. On the other hand, if you take the time to knock him out and tie him up, the one that ran (apparently named Fahan) is sure to carry warning to his leader - who will definitely have time to prepare for your arrival if you give it to him...

Francis Thrannel |

Francis sheaths his dagger and readies wands as the party moves toward the door. "My suggestion would be that you open that door, duck through and get out of the way. If you look like you're joining the battle we're likely to just kill you for spite!"

As the group moves toward the doors on the far side of the room, with Hasina right behind to discourage any attempts at treachery, Sefanit hears something from the room to the west – moaning or perhaps a muffled grunting. Besides the four stone wells that take up most of the space, there are disassembled mechanical parts that lie scattered around plumbing connections in the southeast corner.
The witch calls out softly for a pause and after a moment, Emilia and Hasina hear it too, though very faintly. The dark-skinned thug suddenly speaks. “Oh yeah, that’s the old man that Ekram’s having us hold as prisoner. We caught him earlier this evening right before things went to hell out there on the streets. I uh… I suppose you’ll want to get him out of there – he’s at the bottom of that well. But hey, it's dry down there! It only fills up if we get flooding.” The man exclaims the last defensively as hard eyes turn his way while he points to the sump well nearest to the southwest corner. “Priest of some kind, but Ekram took his holy symbol and figured he couldn’t do no harm without it. We gagged him to make sure though.” He glances at the door as he speaks, as though the Ekram and his men could come bursting through at any moment. Though whether they might be inclined to rescue him or kill him for colluding with the invaders is obviously in doubt.

My thoughts are to continue onward after Ekram. As always, it is only a suggestion.

Sefanit Batinayad |

Sefanit bites on her lower lip as she thinks, unsure what to do. Finally she admits to herself that it's best to accept things don't always turn out for the best.
"We can't wager his life on our being able to return. If something goes wrong, we will have doomed him if we leave him there."

Francis Thrannel |

Francis moves over to the well. "You're right Sefanit. We can't leave him down there. Hasina can you use a rope and help me down to help him? If he's hurt I can help him. Either way Hasina can pull us up one at a time once I've freed him."
He glances over at the thug before going into the well. "So where's his holy symbol now? If you return his gear maybe we'll let you run out rather than in through that door...."
How deep is it?

Sefanit Batinayad |

Sefanit keeps her wand pointed at their captive. "Go ahead and get him out. I'll keep an eye on our friend here. If he tries anything at all, I'll turn him into something else, maybe a scorpion."
Speaking to Kushi, who is riding on her shoulder, Sefanit asks "What do you think dear, would you like a nice, handsome boy as a playmate?"
She gestures with the wand for the man to move on over in the direction of the well.

Already feeling sufficiently threatened by the fearsome red-haired warrior, the thug is doubly intimidate at the idea of being turned into a bug! “Hey no, I’ll tell you where his stuff’s at! Ekram took it back into the storage room back there!” He gestures back the way the adventurer’s came, perhaps through the door on the other side of the entrance tunnel. “There uh… there’s two others in the other well there.” He points toward the pit in the southeast part of the chamber. “They’re probably still out,but I’m pretty sure they’re alive anyway. We found them nosing around a couple days back and Ekram thought maybe we could ransom them or something. But neither one has been what you’d call cooperative. Ekram had us beat ‘em both down to change their minds. He’ll probably kill them outright when they wake up if they don't. I’m sure their stuff is in the storage room too - but it was Ekram and his bodyguards that put the stuff in there.”
The thug compliantly moves against the wall as Sefanit guards him as they move toward the well in the southwest. Looking down, they can see a grey-haired man sitting at the bottom some thirty feet down, his arms and legs bound tightly and his mouth gagged as well. He is clearly conscious as he gazes up at his rescuers, and though it is difficult to be certain as the bottom of the well is masked in shadow, he does appear to be the man that the adventurers met briefly at the Canny Jackal - the man named Ptemenib, who the distressed psychopomp Qasin has begged you to rescue.

Hasina puts away her flail and makes ready with a rope, lowering it into the dry well where Ptenimb lies recumbent in an awkward position, gazing up hopefully at his rescuers. Sefanit glances down the other shaft and confirms the thug’s words, seeing that there are two men down there, both of them apparently either unconscious or dead.
But just as Francis starts to lower himself down into the well, having climbed over the lip and begun his descent, the door through which the other bandit fled suddenly bursts open! Four figures can be seen standing just beyond the opening, including the thug that fled in fear and three others. The trio wear what appear to be decorative funerary masks that cover their faces. One of them is heavily muscled and wields two weapons, a khopesh that glows with a faint ruby glow and a curved kukri dagger. The prisoner whispers in fear. ”It’s Ekram…”, obviously figuring that his fate is now sealed. The formidable warrior gazes at the wide-eyed prisoners, then at the heroes and speaks calmly in a frightening and grim voice that is somehow made worse by the mask he wears. ”Kill them all.” And then the group burst into the room, intent on doing just that! Ekram moves with the speed of a striking cobra, covering the distance between the door and the party in a heartbeat, slashing at Emilia with the glowing, strangely-curved sword that the locals call a khopesh. But the halfling is easily able to avoid the blow.

The entire party is up! Apologies to the newcomers, we need to have this fight before your rescue. I didn’t see Ekram and his cronies giving the party a chance to breathe once he learned of their presence. Francis, you are only about 10’ down that pit or thereabouts. You will need to make another Climb check to get out. Hasina, I presume you are holding onto the rope? You can use your standard action to ‘Aid Another’ with a STR check vs DC 10 to help pull Francis up and out of the pit if you’d like, granting him a bonus to his roll equal to your STR modifier +2 (I figure your strength should get added to the standard bonus). Unfortunately, because of the situation, you can’t attack in this round (unless of course you just want to let go of the rope!) The good news is that Bless is still in effect!! Emilia stood guard as the others began to work on freeing Ptemnib from the pit, watching the door for anyone to come interrupt them. Blinking as Ekram and his allies come bursting out, a small shiver runs up her back at the command. Not a shiver of fear, but anticipation, a wide grin coming across her face as she nimbly leans back and out of the way of Ekram's strike. The sounds of battle and the echo of a what-must-have-been-a-dream halfling battle-cry rouses the desert traveler from his fist-and-boot induced 'nap'. Ki'dhir bolts awake at the bottom of a pit, crammed against the other prisoner - another recipient of Silver Chain hospitality. He shakes his head to clear it while listening to the fighting above. This is likely our best chance for escape.
Ki'dhir shimmies to a standing position, gaining enough room to try to work himself free from the ropes binding him. As part of his struggle against the bonds, he bumps the other prisoner. He hisses at the man quietly. "Wake up. Wake up! This is our chance to escape, sayyid."

Sefanit Batinayad |

Sefanit decides she doesn't want to test their prisoner's trustworthiness too much. She makes a pincher motion with her hand for him to see and says "remember" so he doesn't forget what's (supposedly) his possible fate should he make any false moves.
She then moves up beside Francis while telling Kushi to stow herself back in the pouch she travels in. Pointing at the masked man she tells him "you wear the mask of the dead. I daresay you didn't imagine this morning's fashion choice would be this evening's portent."
Hexing Ekram with Misfortune DC 16 Will save.

Emilia stabs at Ekram and her blade slashes into his side as Hasina assists Francis in getting himself out of the pit – the cleric dropping his curative wand to the injured Ptenimb and then taking the rope from the red-haired warrioress, freeing her to do battle with Ekram. Sefanit uses her witchy magic to hex the leader of the cultists. The prisoner thug bolts for the exit as the other moves in to back up Ekram while the masked cultists spread out, one of them sending a sheet of flames into the heroes as the other targets Sefanit with an arcane bolt that slams into her side. Down in the pit, Farid and Ki’dhir wriggle loose of their bonds!
Ekram growls at Emilia, then slashes and stabs again at the halfling, missing badly with the curved sword but catches her in the side with the kukri as she twists away from the first blow.

Hasina, you can use that roll for the next round, since this round you had to hold on to the rope and help Francis get out of the pit. I need Reflex saves from Emilia, Hasina and Francis to take only half damage from the Burning Hands. Farid and Ki’dhir, you can both take actions in Round 2.
Ekram (Blue) – Wounded [-6 HP] **Misfortune Hex**
Emilia - 27/34 (8 or 4 damage pending) **+1 to attack rolls and saves vs fear/charm for 3 minutes**

Emilia von Happledonk |

Emilia hisses as the blade of the Kukri cuts a deep gash into her arm, stumbling back a bit as her eyes lock onto Ekram. "Not a bad hit, but it's n-WOAH!" She twirls to the side as she attempts to avoid the sheet of flames, lashing out at Ekram again with her shortsword in the process.
Reflex Save: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Shortsword Attack: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 1 = 16
Shortsword Damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
(Don't forget, Emilia has Evasion so if she makes the save, she just flat out avoids the damage.)

Francis Thrannel |

Reflex Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Francis holds the rope for the prisoners in the pit, hoping to have allies join the fight quickly. When he sees the caster send a wave a flames he ducks a little but mostly just tries to hold the rope stable for the climbers.
When the first one reaches the top he grabs an arm to pull them up. "If you can fight with a dagger or club, take it. I'll stay here to get your friend up." Both mentioned are hanging on his belt. The dagger is MW. He continues bracing the rope for the next climber.

Ki'dhir |

~ Round 2 ~
Freed from his bonds, Ki'dhir rubs at his abraded wrists to return circulation to his hands as he regards the walls of the well along with his cellmate. Step 2 - get free of the pit. With his ring and spell materials missing, Ki'dhir *hrmphs* at the fact that most of his preferred eldritch defenses are unavailable. A feral smile creeps across his face. He was a desert creature, not some soft townsman. Survival and adaptability were bred into his bones.
With a whisper and a small gesture, the nomad fades from sight even as he begins quickly climbing from the pit.

Sefanit Batinayad |

The hit smarts, which makes Sefanit's laugh sound a little hysterical. She returns fire (literally) against the one who sent it Yellow, using the wand to send a beam streaking at him.
Attack (Touch): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 5, 2) = 16
Move action to use Cackle Hex to extend Misfortune Hex on Ekram. Standard action to attack, wand of Scorching Ray already in hand.
And a double check to make sure Ekram's attacks on Emilia occurred before Sefanit hexed him, if after he must make 2 rolls and take the worst on all d20's. Worth checking in case it negates the crit on her.
EDIT: Forgot Sefanit must UMD the wand: UMD: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27

Fourth Hour after Sunset
----------------------------------------------
Emilia avoids the flames entirely and, ducking under them, stabs at Ekram again, her blade finding tender flesh as the strike goes deep. Hasina leaves the rope for Francis and draws her flail as she meets the two nearest attackers. The heavy weapon smashes into the masked cultist, but her follow-through is off-balance and the armored thug avoids the blow. Sefanit continues to cackle with a nearly hysterical edge as she invokes the magical wand in her hand, sending a spear of fire that washes over the body of the masked cultist before her, and the man (or woman?) shrieks in anger-tinged pain.
The masked cultists and the thug retaliate, two of them moving to flank Hasina as the badly burned one moves to engage Sefanit and the witch is surprised and dismayed when another of them appears suddenly before her, stabbing with his blade at the cackling witch!
Francis holds onto the rope despite being singed by the magical fire, seeing the dark-skinned prisoner below cast a spell and then vanish from sight! Still, the cleric feels a hard tug and then a fluctuating tautness on the rope, so he knows that the invisible man is climbing rapidly and steadily toward him. Farid hesitates at the bottom of the pit, waiting patiently for his companion to complete the climb, though he wonders how he will know when he’s reached the top…
Ekram grimaces at the tough little halfling in front of him and slashes again with both weapons, shouting in impotent rage as he finds that Emilia is quite difficult to hit!

Thanks for the reminder, Sefanit! Indeed, the crit failed, saving Emilia from 2 HP of damage. Though Sefanit, I don't see a Wand of Scorching Ray in your inventory? I let it stand for the moment, but are you perhaps thinking of another character? Or am I missing something?

Emilia von Happledonk |

Grinning as she see more blood splattered across her blade, she can't help but laugh as the shout fills the room. "What's the matter love? I thought you were gonna CUT to the chase. I guess I'll just have to get to the POINT instead!" With that she draws her arm back like a spring, a massive grin across her face.

Ki'dhir |

~ Round 3 ~
Francis feels the weight of an unseen climber on the line until it cautiously goes slack. A disembodied voice - rich with a desert cadence - whispers, "Thank you, sayyid. Your kindness is a debt between us."
Ka'dhir glances around, considering the situation. Step 3 - exact payment. Still invisible, the nomad begins the gestures of favored spell. Cloaking Shields... Down! A sheet of ravening flames lashes across two of the thugs. When the glare fades, a dark-skinned Garundi in dirty and blood-smeared desert robes appears, crouching ferally on the lip of the well.

The wand of scorching ray (4 charges) was on my inventory. It was passed off to someone that could use it better.... There was also a wand of magic missiles, CL3 with 9 charges. Not sure who has that now. ?
Francis continues to brace the rope, hoping that the battle is ended quickly. When he feels the weight come off of the rope and hears the words he calls down, "Next. Make it quick!"
