I have an idea for a Nethys-worshipper hoping to uncover how the "Pharaoh" Nethys ascended, and then trying to repeat the trick.
Once again, this is a character that might involve a discussion on the nature of Evil.
Nethys is a N god, embodying creation and destruction. His one overriding command is the acquisition of magical power - which his religion uses to discriminate between people. The one thing he seems to forbid is assisting Rovagug.
I see some interesting parallels to geek:programmer culture, especially from the 90's.
I can even see trying for a (questionable) greater good.
But is this evil? Seems like Nethys helping of chaos and law, good and evil... concentrating only the pursuit of magical knowledge could be CE, yet the games states it as N.
This gets very tied up in what people think Evil (note capital) actually is.
Fabian: What do you think?

Here is my (Wolfwaker's) character, still thinking about which picture I like.

While I don't want to start a 'what is evil' thread, I am concerned about the potential effects that such a character would have on the party (and my game).

I can see someone playing a Nethys worshiping PC with the intent of seeking/hoarding magical knowledge and it wouldn't be 'too disruptive' to the rest of the party. So as long as his 'drive' is kept in check, then it would be OK. I like 'minor' character conflict as long the other people involved are OK with it and it doesn't sidetrack the game.

Don't forget that the game (for me at least) is about telling a story. It's going to be up to the players what type of story (adventure, dark, epic, pulp, funny, tragic, etc.), probably a little bit of everything at different times.

In summary, worshiping Nethys and seeking knowledge won't preclude you from the game. Acting in disruptive ways to the rest of the players will but the same can be said about a 'very strict' LG PC. There are stories for both CE and LG PCs but this is not one of them.

Does this help?

Game on!

Thank you.

My only concern is the heavy armor. In hot conditions (> 90 F, like Osirion most of the time), PCs must make fortitude saves every hour (DC=15+1 per previous check) with a -4 penalty for using any heavy clothing or any type of armor or take 1d4 non-lethal damage.

I'll probably ease up a bit on that and use -1, -2, and -4 for light, medium, and heavy armor but it still is hefty.

I haven't read about the Phamet dwarves yet but I don't think it would be appropriate to wear heavy armor in the desert.

Anyway just some thoughts of the top of my head regarding the 'reality' of such a PC. Here I am talking about reality in a fantasy game. :)

Good point. How about an agile breastplate with armor vents?

Much better, I can see that. I can also see this guy sweating quite a bit but that's the price for protection.

Thanks.

So no paladins then, ok.

I am considering paladins as long as they have some other motive for wanting to participate in the lottery and go to the half-city other than looting...

can you weild a weapon while wearing a cestus? And if you are wearing a cestus on your off hand and weilding a sword in your main hand is that considered using two weapons with the applicable penalties?

A cestus is a light melee weapon. You can wear a cestus in your main hand and still wield another weapon (sword) but you will only do damage with the sword.

If worn on the off hand, then it's considered for two weapon fighting with associated benefits, penalties, etc.

I am old school and play my paladins the old 1E way, but he is not lawful stupid either. He knows he has to deal with others that are not of his faith in order to achieve his goals. Grave robbing, while technically what adventurers do, is not at the top of a paladins lists of motivations in my book. The PG even states that an Undead Scourge is a good fit for the AP.

I'm sorry for not making myself clear but I think we are saying the same thing.

A paladin is OK as long as his main motive is NOT tomb robbing.

That does help, thanks!

I like a bit of IC conflict, but not too much and no OOC.

Okay, here he is.

I've tried to keep him young and from a relatively benevolent temple. Also given that a more educative focus (acquisition of magic and knowledge AND the dissemination of same). Would appreciate feedback if you think it is still problematic.

I would be keen to see the group with some sort of constitution or charter prior to game. If Azghaad signed on to a group with clauses like "death to undead" then he'd follow it unless there was a REALLY good reason not to (like a Nethian priest Lich or something).

Note that given halfling Slavery seems to be popping up in other players backgrounds I've given Azghaad some halfling servants to be superior to - hoping it can be a theme. If that's problematic I'm more than happy to get rid of them (I could use the money for scrolls!)

Thanks for the submission. It certainly has been an interesting read and I see no issues with the way the PC has been written and is intended to be played (what I think anyway).

In any case, you sound like a reasonable person and I'm sure we could iron out any 'disruptive' characteristics (should any appear).

Your PC will be given serious consideration to morrow morning.

Going to give you one more applicant for Sunday morning Fabian. Let me know if you have any questions.

Alright everyone, time’s up.
I wanted to really thank those that applied for the game and put time and effort into their character submission. I know it’s no fun to not be picked but practical matters dictate that only a limited number of characters can play.
I know it sounds cliché but I REALLY did have a hard time deciding and I hate to admit it but I had to seek a second opinion in a couple of instances.
If it’s any consolation, these games are notorious for player turnover and, as much I’d like to think that my game will be awesome and no one will ever leave, the truth is that there will probably be player openings in the future. As such, I promise to reach out to those players that did not get picked and ask them if they want to join before opening up the recruitment thread again.

Without further delay, I’ve selected the following five PCs to start the game:
Akbar Contanti, Halfling rogue,
Rubani Madu, human cleric,
Boram Tuffot, halfling alchemist,
Thane Blackwolf, human barbarian, and
Naomi Zeitoun, human warpriest.

Please head over to the Gameplay Thread to read the first turn!

There’s also stuff in the the Discussion Thread that also requires your attention.

Game on!

Thanks for the pick I will get the character sheet to you and a profile up soon

Hey everyone,

We have a well-established game going on that has inevitably lost some players along the way.

There currently are four committed players:

Akhmose, male dwarf paladin,
Azhgaad, male human wizard,
Rubani, male half-elf cleric, and
Shalina, female human bard.

We are looking for a 5th layer to join us.

As you can see, we have all the basic roles covered so there is no restriction as to what type (class) of character can join.

However, the game is pretty heavy on the roleplaying aspect so I want a PC that fits well within the on-going story. All players are expected to write one to two paragraphs per turn recap within 48 hours after the recap is issued (so about two to four paragraphs per week) so if you can't meet that schedule please do not bother applying to the game.

Please take a look at the game turns and posts by the other players to see the type of gaming that we are playing.

If this sounds like a game for you, then post a character with the following sections: a) appearance, b) background, c) personality, and d) portrait or picture. Please make the characters interesting, the strong and silent types just don't cut it in this type of game.

I'll leave this open until for a week (until 4/22/15) at which time I'll make a decision and hopefully have someone join us.

Questions?

checking game play threads but dotting for now

So...I am interested.
Have a few questions before a commitment or solid submission though:

1)game started at level 2 and max lev 2 wealth. IS it still at this level or have the characters advanced? IE: do i build a level 2 or otherwise...if otherwise, what and what wealth?

2) would a gnome bard be an asset to the party? I have one from a live game I was playing I am considering submitting.

3.) what are areas that the group see that I might be able to help shore up?

Hey Herkymr,

Thanks for your interest. Here come some answers.

Starting level 2 and wealth at 2,000 gp.

The gnomish bard seems fine.

I would concentrate on the fluff and see how this new PC fits in with existing story and PCs.

More questions?

I look forward to your submission.

L8r,

Fabian

Will have some sort of Fluffy up l8r today then. Have a few ideas I might work with in the creation process. Cant find the original Bard so might do something else. I will look more at the other players and see if I can find something usueful (or atleast what i see as usefull) for the party

We're losing a warpriest, so fighting is an obvious need. We have a sneaky bard, but more trap skills would certainly not hurt. That's what comes to mind, but I wouldn't personally rule anything out.

Dot for interest!

How long until you decide on the filler character?

Thinking a Ranger/Rogue. My profile will need updated a bit to include my travels to Osirion and my additional level of rogue, but may I present: Huntsmistress Kiirion.

Thanks for your interest.

As stated above, I will keep this open until 4/22/15.

Your profile depicts a 'generic' character but I really would like to see some more campaign specific fluff to your PC.

Also, please submit the appearance and personality parts as well.

Look into the campaign info tab (above) and click on the current PCs to see the type of PC I'm looking for.

Just reposting this from the first post:

Recruitment wrote:
Just so you can start thinking about the crunch part (some people work this way), here are some guidelines: core races only, anything Paizo, 2nd level characters, 20 point buy system for abilities, no abilities below 8 or above 18 after adjustments, no evil characters, average gold, maximum hit points at 1st level and then half+1 (d8 is 5, d12 is 7, etc.) for other levels, one regular trait and one campaign trait. However, please be reminded that PC selection will be based on the ‘fluff’ and not the ‘crunch’. I selected Mummy’s Mask because a lot of the adventuring will take place in the city of Wati so I’m looking for PCs with strong ties to the area (not necessarily natives though).

Presenting Nefer-Nimae:

Brawler (Exemplar) (crunch to come)

Will be expanding Backstory, but currently:

* Campaign Trait: Wati Native: You were born and raised in the city of Wati, and you know its streets and secrets well. Although it’s frowned upon by the city’s authorities, you have sneaked into the necropolis on multiple occasions to wander its dusty, abandoned streets. Out of respect for the deceased, you’ve never actually entered one of the necropolis’s silent tombs, but you have no fear of what might lie inside. You gain a +2 trait bonus on saves against fear effects. In addition, your knowledge of the city grants you a +1 trait bonus on Knowledge (local) checks, and that skill is always a class skill for you.

* Backstory: Nefer-Nimae is the daughter of a Wati Necropolis guard and a Bargetown beauty. Her father (overweight as he was overbearing) was quite old when he married well below his station, and upon his death (during 'Nimae's teenage years) 'Nimae and her mother were cast out of their familial house and returned to Bargetown. Eventually Nefer managed to impress her father's comrades/contemporaries and gained a position training to also be a necropolis guard. Unfortunately, as stated Nimae's family on her father's side disdain her and revile her mother - she has no ability to call on them for favors - though she does get on rather well with one or two of her paternal cousins. She has many relations among the Bargetowners, but mostly they are dissolute, criminal or vagrant - one or two uncles are moderately successful fencers of stolen goods while one aunt runs a dilapidated ale-house/drug den.

* Personality: ’Nimae is a friendly, outgoing and jovial woman with a big heart and an equally short regard for bullies or the upper class. Given the short shrift she and her mother received from her father’s family upon his death, Nimae is understandably upset and somewhat jaded about the conduct of the middle (or upper) classes. Nimae delights in food and drink, loves perfume and incense and generally sensory sensations of every kind.

Nimae also enjoys male company, and will go out of her way to charm or befriend a handsome or equally charming man – to her "flirting" is merely a way of passing the time pleasantly.

* Appearance: 'Nimae is an attractive, larger woman with short black hair and a quick smile. Her armor is well kept if worn, and her khopesh sword equally well maintained. She carries little in the way of other belongings - a satchel for miscellaneous equipment and assorted pouches for sharpening tools and grooming utensils.

Working on an inquisitor. Most likely elf. I will have more shortly. Just checking back in as I get the fluff worked out

@Nefer-Nimae: I like her and look forward to reading about the expanded backstory. Read up on Shalina PC (Wati native) for some potential tie-ins.

@Herkymr: I'm also looking forward to your PC.

Any questions on style and/or type of game?

Have you had a chance to read any of the turn recaps?

Fully updated! I included 3 iterations of her crunch so that you and your party have options to consider.

The first option is my preferred, the Trapper Ranger Archtype, which trades traps for spells and receives trapfinding as a Rogue. This choice allows the ability to carefully traverse dungeons and doesn't sacrifice combat capabilities, the added benefit, is that traps are a LOT easier to manage then spells. The second is the "Core only" Ranger that still has the ability to disarm traps (Via the trap finder trait). As with the first option, this keeps my combat capabilities intact while allowing for a trapfinding-like ability. The third is the rogue variant, which gets sneak attack and trapfinding, but nerfs the overall combat capabilities.

I've updated the profile to include her appearance, personality, and, while its still kind of generic, a more detailed background. I didn't really think that a 2nd level character should have a terribly deep background, as they are fairly close to the start of their journey, but as a note, I've included a fairly detailed personality description to compensate for the lack of history.

All can be found in Kiirion's profile. If there is anything else you would like, please let me know!

Nimae's Background expanded:

Nimae's relationship with her father was a study in opposites - the usually affable public exterior Urumqe presented to the outside world was in sharp contrast to the overbearing and controlling husband he was in the home. Perhaps his own low self opinion and inflated sense of social status combined within him, or perhaps he was merely a conflicted soul - whatever the reason Nimae's parents' relationship was ever fractious. Nimae's mother Shepsut could not but enrage Urumqe whenever she favored another man with the merest glance, kind word or, upon occasion accidental touch. Shepsut was, upon their marriage, a fine boned, gregarious and friendly woman - years of living with Urumqe had stifled her. When Urumqe died the once beautiful woman was haggard, drawn and nervy - the subsequent familiar betrayal and return to the scarcity and scratching (combined with a greater reliance on relatives Shepsut would rather have never seen again) only made matter worse.

While he was alive, Nimae was Urumqe's pride and joy - though he had wanted a son he delighted in his daughter, and taught her much of swordplay and martial acumen. Her illegal forays into the necropolis would have angered, shamed and horrified her father, and when he died she justified her excursions as a way of maintaining a link with him and his profession. Gaining a position with the very guard unit Urumqe had makes the her employ bittersweet - although she feels an obligation to live up to her father's legacy (such as it is) she finds the job mostly uninspiring, lacking in action and excitement, way too intriguing as regards the necropolis she has already investigated but is forbidden to continue. Generally Nimae chafes at the thought of such a structured, and rostered boredom.

Now Shepsut lives on borrowed land, in obligation to more than one brother or cousin - reviled by her in-laws and seen as a somewhat snobbish betrayer even by her own flesh and blood, mostly craven, boorish philistines many of whom have never left the confines of fetid Bargetown. That Shepsut left them all for a towner, and then came crawling back when "they" cast her out is seen as adequate and justified punishment, though the reality is more that jealous brothers or lustful cousins crow at her fall from grace, and enjoy that the once-mighty are brought low. Curisously this ill-treatment does not (mostly) extend to Nimae, perhaps her own puissance at arms, mother-inherited gregariousness and generational innocence leave her still to be either used or ignored at the family's behest.

On her father's side, Nimae's grandparents, uncles and one aunt studiously and concertedly ignore her existence, or if by chance come to actually cross her path, treat her as they might a touched or deformed street beggar - a creature to be pitied, and then passed. One or two male cousins - rakes and feckless well to do ne'erdowells - are companionable allies to her, and one adolescent female cousin is in awe of Nimae's spirit and probable family-concocted infamy.

Depending on Shalina's player, I'm happy for Nimae to be known to Shalina, or for them to have passing familiarity with each other's illicit night-time Wati excursions. Likewise I'm happy for the connection to be even greater, and to include Uncle Namrut in Nimae's background as a distant or close relative, either blood or by marriage.

Thanks for the completed characters.

As stated above, I'll wait a few more days to see if anyone else shows interest and then make a decision on Wednesday night.

I present my applicant for this game: Amenon Rehment. Human Bloodrager.

Appearance:
Amenon, at first sight, is a large imposing figure. Tall, blunt faced and shaved head, the whole outlook is accentuated by a muscular strong build. Having worked for a living his whole life in the brutal Osiarian sun, his skin is dark and often sun-burned. Despite a thick and muscular build, he is light on his feat with a natural flowing grace. Alone with this is the strange rolling gait of a long-time sailor. His accent also betrays influences from Absalom and outside areas.

Background:
Amenon is a family man with no family, a sailor with no ship and a tradesmen with no goods. Amenon was born into a family of small-time (but long time) artifact traders. Still worshiping the old gods, they worked out of Wati strictly with legal artifacts, they had long sold Osirion relics and art in foreign ports. Smaller scale but highly respected, the Rehments trading network was long established for centuries by the time Amenon began the trade.

Amenon was a headstrong, willful teen, who always reached out for what he wanted. Not greedy, just unmindful of consequences. His family would have despaired over the business but his older brother Meryre, was always able to control Amenon. The strong ,raffish young man always looked up to his sterner, more sober brother. So they made a good team. Meryre had been raised to lead the family business. With a good head for numbers and figures, he was a natural businessman. Amenon was the muscle, as well as the easy-going 'good cop'. When the deal was well Amenon would amuse and entertain with his easy conversation and funny stories. When the deal went poorly the big man could loom ominously behind Meryre, cracking his knuckles loudly.

Still, despite how well the brain and muscle worked together, the business went downhill. The trade grew as the Osirion clerics opened up more and more to outside trade. The small, legal, respected dealers with the Rehments were soon pushed out by larger concerns like the Aspis Consortium and other cartels. These bigger companies often dealt with illegally gained artifacts, so they soon expanded their operations far past what Meryre could produce. By the time Amenon was 20, the family business had shrunk to one leaky vessel, making runs to Absalom, Oppara or Cheliax. Ameon had a much more cosmopoltion background then other Wati natives but he knew the family was in trouble. Under heavy pressure the brothers knew the end was near, but with no other options they carried on.

It finally came on a dark night, in Bargetown. A local smuggler hired a gang to finally put the brothers out of business. Amenon fought well (and wildly) but was soon overcome. His brother was killed in the struggle (mostly by accident) and the killers took off in a panic, leaving Amenon wounded in a gutter.

His life was over. What to do? His brother, the brains was dead, and all the goods lost. The ship was soon taken and the rest of the family fell apart. Even with this skills and knowledge of artifacts, no trader would hire him. He slummed for months on the docks, begging for work. Even this mundane labor was hard to get though, as the various cartels and gangs put pressure on any who employed him.

After being rejected for the lowly job of unloading grain, Amenon turned away in disgust. Instead of spending a night chasing wine and women, he instead went out under the stars and pondered what to do. As he stood there alone, in the chill desert, he heard a voice. “Seek out the Dead.” Confused and fearful, he thought perhaps the voice meant his brother. Then he realized it was the necropolis, the old gods that his family still followed were commanding him to seek out the ancient tombs.

So he head back into the city, towards the necropolis. Here he could remake himself. He could follow the command of the gods, seek out a living and perhaps even re-start the family business (and his life)? Amenon haunted the taverns and inns, seeking out an honest and respectful group of adventurers.

Personality:
Amenon has a very exuberant and outgoing personality. He lives on the edge of skin, showing emotion very freely, and deals well with others. Through his years with his brother he learned to be a skillful people person, always quick with a joke or a smile.

This easy-going nature has a dark side however, as he can be a slave to his emotions. Easily angered, he is given to fits of rage and jealousy, just as much as bouts of mirth and laughter. His flat-features can assume a very frightening visage, and this can be much worse when he flies into a fighting rage. Still, he is generally a good-natured and easy going man. More apt to make a friend then a enemy, he can fight you, break and arm, and then be the man to take you to the nearest healer.

His greatest weakness is probably women. Impulsive, good-looking and charming he picks them up easily but he never bothers to find out if they are attached or otherwise romantically involved. His flighty emotions however, often leave a trail of confused and angry lovers behind him.

Portrait or picture:

Mechanics:
Amenon is a human Bloodrager with the Undead bloodline. He doesn't know it, but his family was cursed for raiding tombs millennia ago, and since then it has haunted the bloodline. Unknown to Amenon this curse is why the family has since struck to the straight and narrow on artifacts.

I plan on getting the Boar Fighting style when I can, but for now I have the Cudgeler combat style which focuses on non-lethal damage, which fits the character.

About Me:
I am an experienced PbP player, with a few live games under my belt. I like to write, alot, and telling stories is my real wish in RPG. This game seems like a very good fit and I promise to put as much in as I get out. My timezone is EST if that matter.

Full sheet can be provided if selected.

Unfortunately I must withdraw. I will most likely stay reading though for it looks fun.

Yep, going to withdraw - Nimae's sheet is mostly finished sans equipment and feats, but my nightshifts are getting more numerous, and I don't think I'll have the time to give to this it deserves.

Yes, it is.

I am happy to inform that Amenon Rehment (Human Bloodrager) has been selected to join us in our game.

I want to thank all the other applicants (even those that withdrew); I hope you find a game for those PCs.

Amenon: please join us in the discussion thread and say hi to everyone. You'll have to get working on that character sheet but let's not that detail prevent you from joining the game. Let's talk so we can get you playing right away while you make your character sheet.
