I have a spot open in the CotCT I'm running if anyone would be interested. They are near the end of the second book, and just hit level 6. Originally Dreaming Warforged had joined me, but then as you saw they decided to stop playing PbP, so I'm back to having a spot.

I also have a spot in my Mummy's Mask game, where they are about halfway through the first book (getting close to finishing the second site).

Bear in mind, I have some houserules that may not gel with some (posted in the Mummy's Mask campaign tab, and just hadn't put them in the campaign tab for CotCT yet). Please look at them before deciding, as they have been a deal breaker before.

halfling tattooed sorcerer (orc) 2 |AC 13, FF 13, T 11, CMD 9; F 1 R 3 W 6, +2 vs fear; hp 4/10; init +2; perc +10, +12 w/ familiar, +15 sight-based in shadows w/ familar

If I'm not already over-extended, I'm sure another game (or two) would put me there. I have not played in either AP as far as you describe - both attempts failed early - and I would love to experience them as a player before I read all the spoilers, but, no. I don't think I would do it justice.

I didn't see any deal-breakers in your house rules, though. I'm sure the take 10/20 thing bothers some, in particular, but I'm never comfortable with it, anyway.

Hmm, does that apply to class abilities that specifically call out that they can be used with take 10/20? I think bardic knowledge is one of those.

Male Half-elf Oracle 1 (AC: 17 [T: 13 /FF: 14]; HP: 17/17; F+3, R+5, W+6 (+3 more with Taint); Init: -1; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

In general, I would say that those would be exceptions, as they are special benefits of attaining a certain level in a class. And yes, generally the take 10/20 is the rule that can cause some to bristle.

EDIT: As far as doing either of them justice, I'm a much slower poster than I would like to be. Sadly, that means they tend to be slower games, but that means it allows time for busy schedules.

I'm going to regret this, but what type of character are the groups in need of?

I'll PM you, to keep from clogging this up.

The house rules don’t look like deal breakers to me. I can see pros and cons to disallowing take 10s and take 20s, but as a player I usually forget the option exists anyway.

I’ve played CotCT (highly modified and taken in a different direction from about half way through, and I’ve read Mummy’s Mask. It’s sometimes hard to tell what play is going to be like just from reading it, but I really enjoyed the read through of the first couple of adventures (particularly the first one), some of the later ones looked like they could be a real grind. I may look to get in on this one from day 1 if anyone plans to run it in future, but I think I’ll pass at this stage. Thanks for the offer though.

Who ended up paying for the extra donkey and rations for Oliver's use by the way (though I am assuming the donkey may also be carrying the purchaser's extra gear)?

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4

Eljoy had plenty of cash. He'll front the money for Oliver.

Jasper was in pretty good shape if you want to split that, therealthom. But he wouldn't push himself into the conversation if Eljoy offered, either.

As you continue your journey, there will come times when you’ll have to move overland without benefit of a trail or other obvious geographic feature to follow – for example, when travelling through trackless areas of Darkmoon Wood.

At these points, Survival skill checks will need to be made to avoid getting lost. These checks must be made by the character leading the way at a rate of once per hour. The typical DC of the skill checks in forests is 16, but can vary depending on other factors. I will rule that you can’t take 10 or 20 on these checks, as there is a penalty for failure, and although danger might not be evident at every point that such a skill check needs to be made, you always need to be alert for danger in these woods, ruling out taking 10. I see no reason why you can’t ‘Aid Another’ on these skill checks if the aiding characters are trained in Survival.

To avoid having to make numerous tedious dice rolls, and also to preserve the suspense that you may actually get lost at some point, I will in most cases make these Survival checks to avoid getting lost (including any ‘Aid Another’ checks) offline.

For every day of travel (or at any point that you want to change who leads the way), please designate a ‘leader’ for the purpose of trailblazing and finding the way, and let me know which characters (if any) are planning to aid on the skill checks.

Jasper is ranks in Survival and has a +6 modifier. He just has no knowledge of how to handle animals. I think it's more of a savant thing due to his bloodline than a training thing, though.

Unless he is nominated to be the leader, I'm fine with his aiding.

Good? Looking after 20 something other peoples kids.... hmm...

I *did* manage two nights sleeping in my hammock. I didn't have to clean up bodily fluids. I did get to see a bunch of kids climb higher than they ever imagined they could and generally have a really good fun two days.

Yes, it was good. Now, pass me the wine before I fall asleep.....

I shall be on holiday from Friday for two weeks. I doubt I will have any meaningful internet access during that time.

It's Aubrey's vacation season. [rampant jealousy]I can only hope that Brexit results on a clamp down on the UK's ridiculously generous vacation policies soon. [/rampant jealousy]

Liberty's Edge

I'm certainly in awe of Aubrey's holiday time - and the fact that he actually goes on holiday rather than sitting around at home catching up on tv (which is what I would do half the time).

Where to this time?

Dark Archive

Wintergreen's CE PA IT Geek 10/Daddy 9/Physicist 3/Cartographer 1/Runner 3/Cub Scout Leader 2/Musician 1

Standard UK holidays are 20 days, plus the 10 bank holidays..... Most places give you more the longer you are there, which tends to top out at 30 days ish.....

It always amazes me when Americans get so few days. I think I'd go postal....

The Exchange

No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30

I have a basic allowance of 25 days, I've bought another 5 days through salary sacrifice, and I've five days carried forwards. So a reasonable amount of holiday this year. Banking tends to offer quite good benefits like holidays and such. Being an arrogant banker is hard work, after all.

Ha!

It's interesting how the different cultures do vacations. I know a lot of folks that have virtually no vacation, but I know a lot that piecemeal their work, so they really have as much or little time off as they dare take, too.

I have a lot of years with my company, so I get quite a bit of vacation, which I mostly scatter throughout the year in the form of long weekends. We try to have at least one break every month and a couple weeks set aside for trips.

So I'm not so jealous of Aubrey's time as I am for his son's opportunities to know his native land growing up. When your father is tied to the job like mine was, you don't get to travel much. (He was effectively a one-man company - if he wasn't there, nearly everything stopped until he got back. Not unlike a farmer, really, but he could pay a fellow to keep the doors open for basic services while we were gone the few times we left the area.)

Anyway, good for you and the wee one. See you when you return!

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4

Aubrey's got young uns? Splendid!

Have a good time with the family, Aubrey. We'll see you in a few weeks then.

The Exchange

I'm brexiting is Spain. Apparently there are rumours that European police are going to go a bit hardcore on British doing traffic violations, which they might have ignored otherwise, so I'll have to be careful on the roads.

Eljoy is taking the shield.
Reekis is taking the dagger (Aubrey to confirm)
Adalwin is taking the longbow, 16 arrows and studded leather armour
The rations are presumably used in place of today’s rations?

Is anyone else taking any of the hobgoblin’s gear? OR is any of it being stashed on the mules to sell later in town?

Dark Archive

Wintergreen's CE PA IT Geek 10/Daddy 9/Physicist 3/Cartographer 1/Runner 3/Cub Scout Leader 2/Musician 1

Yes to the rations.

The cash is going on the donkey. We can work out distribution later.

  • The studded leather armour Aldwin
  • shield before Adalwin and Eljoy were on him – it hangs on his belt, a light, circular steel shield with a wicked spike in the centre. Eljoy
  • several weapons – a battered longsword, Donkey
    - his yew longbow along with a quiver of 16 black fletched arrows, Aldwin
    - a long dagger and Reekis
    - a skinning knife. Donkey
  • trail rations – mostly dried and smoked meat that would probably have sustained him for about 6 days; Eaten
  • a flea infested woollen blanket; Leave
  • a piece of flint and a sliver of steel, Leave
  • tied together with twine; Leave
  • and a small cast iron skillet. Leave
  • A pouch at his belt holds 4 gold coins of Andoran mint, 11 silver pieces, and an oddly shaped tin whistle. Anor will pocket the whistle. Cash on the donkey.

If everyone is OK with that I'll record it on Anor's donkey for the communal stuff.

Ok, I'm dumping the communal info on my wiki, I find it easier to link and track stuff than putting it in the profile of my character....

Let me know if you’re bored or frustrated going into the detail of things like setting up camp etc. Normally I wouldn’t spend much time on it, but in this case a) it’s the group’s first night in the wilderness, b) I was trying to give everyone something to do before the scouts got back and c) it’d be nice not to get too far before Aubrey is back on board.

I figure that if the group establishes some procedures now, we can assume those generally apply going forward and we can hand wave it next time.

Yeah, it works for me. Better, as you say, than sitting waiting for the other side of the split group....

Cool, glad you're back. How was the holiday?

The Exchange

No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30

Holiday was fine. But we've got back to our newly renovated kitchen to discover that the oven doesn't work - which rather goes to the heart of the matter. We'll get it fixed, but it's a shame the people doing the kitchen didn't, like, notice and now we have to have a few more days/weeks with a kitchen in which you cannot actually cook anything.

Dark Archive

Wintergreen's CE PA IT Geek 10/Daddy 9/Physicist 3/Cartographer 1/Runner 3/Cub Scout Leader 2/Musician 1

Ahhh, chinese takeout.

Seriously, that sucks. If they didn't check that the oven works, I'll bet that they didn't level it either. Good luck, Aubrey.

Liberty's Edge

Male Mothman Expert 5

That does suck. So was the kitchen being done while you were away? And the contractors 'finished' the job without testing the new appliances?

Not nice to come home to.

This is where a slight obsession with both cooking and camping comes in. Oven breaks, we break out the camping gear ;)

Hope you get it sorted sharpish though Aubs, BBQs are nice, but old quick ;)

The Exchange

We have our two camping stoves out at the moment. Pretty tricky doing a roast on those, though.

Ahh, there are ways and means ;)

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4

With some Styrofoam insulating boards and a salamander heater you can get close to 300 degrees in a big box. That should do your roast.
