Randal Evenwood |
Randal breathes a sigh of relief as he escapes into an alcove but when he hears Dervels scream he calls on his god to smite the worm.
I'm going to cast Guiding Bolt from a second level slot.
Ranged spell Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Damage: 5d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5, 5, 2) = 15
If I hit the next attack roll made on the worm gets advantage.
Vasayo |

For a moment that seems like an eternity, Vasayo thinks about just hiding here and escape when the time is right. But only for a moment. Those people pulled him up from the pit, rescued him from the gelatinous cube and healed him up like a hundred times. Screw this! I already died once today, time to kick some snake...
"Cut this dawned worm open! " he shouts while putting both his weapons deep into the creatures flesh (or at least plans to do so).
Attack with Sneak Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Piercing damage: 1d6 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (5) + 4 + (2, 3) = 14
Attack with off-hand: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Piercing damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Since we were hidden, do we have advantage?

Rasp the Rogue |
Yes, you would have advantage for being hidden. Post to move us forward coming soon. Just let me get my bearings again.
Oh, Alton was right he did do worse than Derval. But Derval probably looked meatier so the action stands. Sorry, bud. Once again you guys have been great.

Rasp the Rogue |
The sudden onslaught of damage from Randal causes the purple worm to open its mouth and drop Derval. Make a DC 10 Acrobatics and you won't take damage. Otherwise take 1d6.
Grith and Alton still have actions. Randal, roll for the guided bolt again. You hit regardless, but who knows you might score a crit. Vasayo you had advantage, too so make your second d20 rolls.

Alton seems frozen for a fraction of a second as the worm swallows Dervel. Then he turns and starts yelling and repeatedly stabbing the worm.

Grith |
Grith sees his team spring into action to save the elf, everyone fighting for a common goal. He realizes that this time, if he simply remains hidden, things won't be the same. Instead of being one of many to survive by avoiding the fight, he'd be the only coward in the bunch. And stuck in a dark tunnel alone with a giant worm at that. No, this time, live or die, his only shot would be to take on the worm with his companions and hope for the best. Perhaps this is what courage was born of, or perhaps this was nothing like courage. Either way, the wizard steps forward and unleashes hell on the beast.
"Chew on this, wretched wormling!"
Magic Missile Damage: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (1, 4, 2) + 3 = 10
wicked_raygun |
Alton your first attack hit as well. I'll roll your damage here.
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
You ambush the purple worm with swords and sorcery, landing several heavy blows. The worm opens its maw and out dribbles Derval.
Bite vs. Vasayo: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Damage: 3d12 + 8 ⇒ (2, 10, 11) + 8 = 31
The worm opens its gaping maw once again, and bites down on Vasayo, swallowing him in a single loud slurp.
Derval, I found out that you weren't supposed to take damage until the beginning of the worm's turn. But you were spit out before that. So the 10 damage you took is void.
Vasayo, DC 15 acrobatics or athletics to get out.
OK, everyone is up.
Randal Evenwood |
Oh dear, I was hoping there wasn't enough room for it to turn around...
Randal screams " Oh gods! We're all dead! "
Through his panic he smites the worm again.
Lvl2 Guiding bolt : 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Dmg: 5d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 5, 5, 6) = 26

Vasayo |
Attack with Sneak Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Attack with off-hand: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
that's for the advantage, damage rolls are in the old post.
Vasayo is consumed by the worm, loosing consciousness just as the gaping mouth of the creature closes.
I only have 21 HP, so I'm at 0 now and thus possibly dead by next turn.

Acrobatics vs DC 10: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Completely lacking in grace and honour the elf is hiccuped onto the floor roughly.
"Wish I had died, rather."
He pulls himself to his feet. He closes his eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath. In a flurry he draws his longsword and starts hacking at the worm.
Attack with longsword: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Action Surge, Attack with longsword: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Vasayo, make a DC 10 death saving throw.
Vasayo is slowly consumed. You get 1 death failure for being digested.
Alton your first attack hit. I'll roll damage for you.

The worm bites down hard on the brave halfling hero, Alton. And he too is easily gulped down.
Bite vs. Alton: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Damage : 3d12 + 8 ⇒ (11, 4, 8) + 8 = 31
That puts Alton at zero as well. You'll need to roll me a death save, too.
Everyone is up. And don't feel discouraged, guys. This fight is meant to be unfair. If anything I'm amazed you've done this well.

Death: 1d20 ⇒ 11
I'll live for another round. Next time I receive damage I'm only one bad roll away from being gone.
Oh and if I survive this, are there Achivements? I mean, I almost died like a hundred times. Don't tell me there are no Achivements ;-)

Vasayo |
Yes, everyone has the same chances to stabilise, slightly tipped in their favour since a 10 is also positive. That way even high level chars still run a chance of dieing.

Not enough to kill you outright. But it does give you a death save failure.
The purple worm rumbles its displeasure at all the damage it has taken. it reaches down and tries to bite Randal, but the cleric manages to dodge the maw of horror.
Bite vs. Randall: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12, Miss.

Yes, you make a death save per round. Until you have either 3 successes in which case you stabilize, or 3 failures in which case you're dead, Jim.
Was waiting on Derval, but I'll go ahead and DMPC him.
Derval swings his longsword desperately into the worm. His sword hacks a chunk off the worm off like a piece of overripe melon.
Longsword vs. Purple Worm : 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Damage : 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Still need death saves from Vasayo and Alton, but I guess I can continue the assault.
The purple worm rears back and bites down hard on Derval. He slurps him into his mouth like a wet noodle. Swallowed and at zero hit points.
Bite: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

Greataxe (advantage): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Vasayo |
Since we are taking damage every turn, there's no real chance to stabilise. So yeah, I'm dead. Only thing that I regret is that we only delayed the inevitable. We could have just fought this thing outside the mine and be already 1.5 days dead now :-D

The Purple Worm continues to digest his meal of adventurers.
Acid and Grinding: 1d10 + 1d10 ⇒ (9) + (6) = 15
If I am counting correctly that's death save failure for Alton, and two success. If he can survive this round, perhaps he can be cut out. But Vasayo does have 3 failures, so that's it for our awesome rogue. It was a great run, man.
Derval stabilized at 1HP, but he couldn't escape, thus he took enough damage to die again. He starts again at zero successes and zero failures.
The worm decides to attack the dwarf hacking at his skin. He bites down on the armored wizard flips him up fifteen feet off the ground and catches him mid-air, swallowing him whole.
Bite: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28, Hit.
Damage: 3d12 + 8 ⇒ (1, 8, 12) + 8 = 29
183/202
And then there was one.

You guys seemed interested in me rolling the death saves, so I'll do so now. This is in alphabetical order.
Alton Death Save DC 10: 1d20 ⇒ 9
Derval Death Save DC 10: 1d20 ⇒ 2
Grith Death Save DC 10: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Well, damn. Alton just got his final death save failure. Derval has 1 failure and 0 successes. So he still has a fighting chance.
But Grith...
The stubborn dwarf refuses to die. His eyes fly open. He's briefly disoriented but he quickly comes to the horrific conclusion that he's been swallowed. He struggles to get out. DC 10 Dexterity (acrobatics) check to escape the purple worm, Grith.
wicked_raygun |
hmm... What to do, what to do... Are there anymore fancy hidey holes around where I might be able to avoid death?
Out running the worm is not likely. You can try hiding in the alcove again. But you'll be at a disadvantage to the Dexterity (Stealth) roll. But, hey, never say never.
Rasp the Rogue |
Take an inspiration point, Grith. And I'll let you take a second action this turn.

Grith whips around, somehow alive in spite of circumstances, and swings his axe with terrible fury. "Taste the wrath of the wizards from the Metal Mountain!"
Greataxe (inspired): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10, Damage: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Greataxe (inspired 2): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 That was helpful.
Rasp the Rogue |
Derval takes another death failure, putting him at two.
The dwarf's axe lands deep into the worm's hide. The worm screeches in pain and retaliates by biting the dwarf in half. He swallows the torso, leaving only a pair of quivering dwarven legs that somehow remain upright.
Bite vs. Grith: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Damage : 3d12 + 8 ⇒ (1, 11, 5) + 8 = 25
Grith was dealt enough massive damage for an instant kill. Alas, good buddy. It was a fun ride.
