Thank you for the Language Arts lesson, now back to more gaming news...
I'm going to wait until Chillel, Goruck, Baradim, and the actual Lunarinus chime in about if/where they want to go and let you guys narrate the front end of arriving at Roots and Remedies. Remember that two hours have passed, and Laurel will once again have a long line of customers heading north out of her shop. Obviously, with the information this group has found, they are going to want to interrupt and get her expertise on those ingredients. Of course, if someone in the group, *ahem* Baradim *ahem*, wanted to make a Knowledge Nature check, they might be able to offer some advice about the ingredients all on their own. Of course, they wouldn't know which ingredients Laurel has on hand, so you'll have to go there any way. Wouldn't it be great if Laurel had all the ingredients!!! No, no it wouldn't, because then there wouldn't be an adventure to go on, monsters to slay, treasure to find, and glory to be won! Yay games!
Chillel |
And you got another language arts lesson from Chillel in character.
I don't think we should agonise over which groups to split into.
Illiam Taal |
Yeah. When it sounded like we were going to have two groups on different missions, it was different. But now it sounds more like one main group and a couple of individuals delivering messages or getting a question answered.
Goruck of the Stone |
Actually, Kairon has higher priority due to Goruck's order. Sorry Scipio! Out of curiosity, am I way out of sync with my GMT here in Idaho? Seems I always miss the post dogpiles.
Illiam Taal |
I think most of us (with the exception of Chillel, who is in Australia) are within a timezone or two of idaho. the busy times just happen to be earlier in the day.
Dolok Pickering |
I'm also on central standard time & can post more frequently during the day at work. (Love getting paid to PBP!) My evenings are a bit more busy as I'm in tabletop games Mon, Tue, Wed, every other Thur, Every other Fri, and now also starting another one every other Sat! AND I'm in one other PBP on here. Addicted to gaming much? :)
Chillel |
You all first knew me as Joynt Jezebel. That name is taken from one of my favourite songs by KMFDM. As my character is now trying to organise a cremation, I can let you in on a rather strange co-incidence.
"Juke-Joint Jezebel"
I CAN'T REJECT THIS EMPTY HOLE
I CANNOT COUNT THE BLOODY COST
I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS WRETCHED SOUL
COME PENETRATE ALL THIS LOSS
COME ON AND KILL THIS SENSE OF LIFE
AND BE THE ONE WHO IS DENIED
NOW SHOW ME ONE MORE UPTURNED KNIFE
AND FILL THE EMPTINESS INSIDE
IF I COULD LEAVE MY BURNING SKIN
THAT HAS BEEN USED UP IN YOUR SIN
IS THERE A TINY PART OF ME
UNTOUCHED-UNSOILED BY MISERY
I AM THE CITY THAT WILL LIE
YOU ARE THE ONE THAT BLAME PASSED BY
THIS IS THE PLACE WHERE I WILL WEEP
THE LONELINESS OF SWEET CONCEIPT
BE MINE SISTER SALVATION
JUKE JOINT JEZEBEL IS COMING FOR MY CREMATION
BE MINE SISTER SALVATION
CLOSER NOW- SEE THE REVELATION
Illiam Taal |
Never heard the song, but judging by the fact that the lyrics are all-caps, I imagine it being loud :P
Dolok Pickering |
Well,I don't know all the lyrics to this song but lately in country music there's been a song that one line says something like "Why put out the fire if it's still burning?" (I think that's how it goes.) - I get a smile thinking of Dolok every time! :)
And I do not know your song either Joynt, which is not surprising since I prefer to listen to country & pretty much never listen to Rock.

Uhhh... dude, complete jealousy over here. When I moved to where we're at now I left behind two different active groups that I was GM for, and I desperately miss them both. Though, this game is satisfying some of my own addictive gaming itch. Regardless, Dolok, savor that busy gaming schedule! Savor it!!! That is a command!
Chillel/JJ that song has some very eerie resemblances to what your character is living in/through right now. Straaaaaaaannnnnnngggggggeeeeee.
Chillel |
Yes, that is why I posted the lyrics.
I too am jealous of Dolok's prolific roleplaying. But we have different tastes in music. I actually used to hate country untill I discovered some of the darker less commercial country such as that recorded by Johnny Cash shortly before he died which is often excellent.
Syrus Terrigan |
Metal. Rock. Classical. A capella hymns.
Really -- really -- not a fan of country, but some is listenable. I can listen to bluegrass all day, though. How weird is that?
I made it to the Tool concert in Little Rock, AR two weeks back, even. First concert ever! While I don't like some of the content or message, there's something about their music that just hooks me.

Dunno why I explicated prot/evil when I meant shield/faith yesterday, but, whatever.
Would Kairon be able to incorporate guidance with a use of Blessed Surgery? Or should I just use it as my fallback after BS uses are expended?
When I read "ironbloom mushrooms" yesterday, I realized a short time later that my local gamer buddy ran a small piece of this module for me couple years back. He just cut to part of a dungeon crawl for us to start getting familiar with the differences between PF and 3.5. We're a combat-oriented group, so that's where we picked it up; I was running a four-man Iconics unit -- mechanics, no story other than "mission objectives". I don't think it'll have an adverse effect on my gameplay -- all I really recall was that the mushrooms were listed in the "loot" list.

Dude, I am not kidding, that is almost exactly what I would have written. I feel the exact same way about both Country and the band Tool. Never been to a concert though. Their song Sober will forever be one of my favorites. For multiple reasons that shall remain private. I do love Cash's later stuff, as well. His rendition of NIN's Hurt is also one of my very favorites of all time. I can listen to that song on an endless loop and not get tired of it.
Edit: Not sure I was as clear about how close to that description mine would have been. The list at the top, check, check, check, and check. The bluegrass... Check. Mumford and Sons, Fun. two of my favorites.

If you want to switch protection from evil for shield of faith I have zero problem with that. Also I'm not worried about you metagaming anything, partially because, for whatever reason, I already trust you as a player, and partially because, with the size of this group, I've made several changes to the list/condition of bad guys. :) Of course Kairon might end up with a LOT of intuition if/when we do finally get to that mini-dungeon crawl.
Kairon says, I don't know why, but I feel like we should just avoid that room altogether... ;) :P
MendedWall12 |
Well if you want Kairon to save Falcon's Hollow, you're going to have to load up a bunch of mushrooms and carry 'em back, then make a bunch of holy water, and make tea out of 'em. Then just for good measure, since you've been exposed, you'll have to drink some. Mmmmm newt-tail and ironbloom mushroom tea.
MendedWall12 |
And Lady Cirthana better be making holy water while we're out of town!!! Or at least fronting the silver!!!
What?! You don't think you can get some of the charismatic members of the party to convince Kreed that he should front the silver? Somebody do the math for me. Figure everybody needs a 4 oz glass of the tea for an effective cure. Town has roughly 1507 people in it. How many gallons of water are we talking about? Also, how many pints in a gallon? 25 gp worth of powdered silver per pint...
Whoa! I just did my own math. It appears the town will need 50 gallons of holy water to cure the entire town. That's roughly 10,000 gp worth of powdered silver... Okay...? Ummmm... Sometimes hasty GMing leads to tomfoolery. I thought bless water was a zero level spell, and had no idea it required 25gp worth of powdered silver to work. So... obviously all of those barrels I mentioned as being in the church's basement? Yeah, those are all holy water. Believe it or not there are exactly 40 gallons of holy water just sitting in barrels in the church basement, waiting for just such an occasion. Funny how stuff like that seems to work. It's almost like some benevolent god had those barrels waiting there for just such an occasion. :P
Edit: This means someone in town will still need to be convinced to produce approximately 50gp worth of silver to be powdered for the remaining ten gallons, and yes, Lady Cirthana will have to be spamming bless water while the adventurers are out and about.
Also! Don't forget that in addition to exhuming and burning the bodies, at some point Brookman's well is going to need to be completely destroyed, and all the material burned with arcane fire.
Ah the wonderful work-a-day life of a murderhobo... :D

Maybe having a large scale prayer and offering to Sarenrae resulting in the needed amount of water becoming blessed, like directly by the god, is a bit more plausible. Well it seems that way to me.

More plausible than a church having 4 ten gallon barrels full of holy water just sitting around in their basement storage? I mean, either way it's GM hand-wave. One is a bit more mundane, and the other a bit more direct and immediate deity intervention. Which I've been known to do, but rarely for something so seemingly simple as holy water. Too late for me to go back and change the "holy" to "purified." :P That would have solved a lot of problems because purify food and drink IS an orison that both Lady and Kairon could just sit and spam... Maybe Baradim's reading of "holy" is a bit flawed? Maybe Sylvan "purified" is similar to "perfected" which could be translated "holy" or "purified," depending on the circumstances. Maybe Chillel takes a quick look at the entry, since she's a linguist and says something like, "you know, I don't think this word here means holy, as in sanctified by a deity. I think it means purified or cleansed of impurities. Eh? Sound good. That's a much easier hand-wave than the other two options!
Illiam Taal |
Ha! Guess what, Laurel knows Sylvan. :) I'll just have her do the correction to purified. No worries.
Hope she doesn't also read Elven, otherwise I see a pretty big plot hole. It could maybe be explained by the faded ink, but I would think she would have spent enough time examining to notice it.
MendedWall12 |
Chillel, Baradim, or Dolok, you would all know that Brickasnurd Hildrinsocks has some magical knowledge and talent, as does Sharvaros Vade. Sharvaros is a bit of a recluse himself though, his son Savram is seen far more often than Sharvaros, and he doesn't usually take kindly to visitors. You would also know that the Lumber Consortium has a ranger that does scouting for new cutyards. His name is Milon Rhoddam. He'd be the most accessible person with the most in depth knowledge of the woods.
Illiam Taal |
Anyone else Baradim might know? Wasn't there mention of a teacher? Sounded like a druid or something...
MendedWall12 |

That's from his backstory, and not part of anything Paizo has published. Which is not to say that that character doesn't exist, but Baradim and I would have to figure out the particulars of that together. For right now, let's keep it with those people I mentioned.
Illiam Taal |
Ok. I just thought that if it was a local druid, he would have a really good chance of knowing where to find the tree, and would likely have run into the witch at some point, even more so than the lumber guys. If nothing else, Baradim should come up with a reason why that's not a viable plan.
Illiam Taal |
For that matter, Baradim should probably make a check to see if he's run into either thing, or seen where these dwarven ruins are. I imagine the DCs would be fairly high, since we're supposed to ask around, but he's an obvious first person to ask.
Baradim |
I'll make the rolls if that is okay with you Mended. The druid was his teacher but she disappeared somewhere in the Darkwood Vale years ago. He has since been itching to begin exploring it and try to find some trace of her.
Chillel |
Hey Illiam-
your last post in the game thread prompted me to PM Mended Wall asking if I know anything about the Vade guy beyond what is in the primer, which ain't much.
And I think you are right about being honest. If that does not work we can try deception- maybe. But if he catches as lying he won't help unless he was always going to.
MendedWall12 |

Baradim, that's perfectly fine, as Illiam says the DCs are on the high end, but with a +5 bonus on knowledge: Geography, some are certainly makeable. The DCs vary by location, but if you just roll once, I'll give you the information for any of the locations whose DC your score beats or ties. So, yes, please go ahead and roll a Knowledge: Geography, and let's see what happens.

Good morning all. Looks like the pace of our game has slowed down, but that is to be expected. Games usually take off with gusto and then settle to a much more irregular pace. Just wanted to encourage everyone not to give up on checking in and posting. We have a great crew here and things are about to get very interesting... :)
Dolok Pickering |
Still here! All hot and bothered! :)
Chillel |
Indeed. The events really began with the finding of the cure.
You called me a nite owl mended wall, true enough.
I am also a serious chess player, and the world championship is about to start, in like 40 min. At 3am local time, which is too nite owlish for me. :(
Indeed an early bird would do better, start watching at 7 am or something.
Illiam Taal |
Sorry if I'm making things difficult by going off-script again. This is another situation where, given Illiam's character, it just doesn't make sense for him to go along with what we're probably expected to do.
Dolok Pickering |
Paladin's and rogue-types - the party de-stabilizers ... but I understand. Illiam is playing his character. Perfectly understandable.
Dolok Pickering |
Illiam and his drill!!! My goodness! I'm not sure how to handle this!
Illiam Taal |
I would think that even if Master Figueroa doesn't have one that he intends to sell, he must use one in his work, which Illiam could ask to borrow. He won't be using it right now anyway...
MendedWall12 |
Illiam is proving he's an outsider, and Dolok is proving he's a reckless teenager. If they were saying the things they're saying in front of any Valer that's been around for awhile they'd hear this: You're talking about questioning Vade as if it's as easy as walking up to his gate and ringing a bell! You know he lives in a tower, on the hill, behind a wall, right?
That being said, I LOVE Illiam's intuition and distrust. At this point if people aren't questioning what the hell Vade is doing up there, they haven't been paying a whole lot of attention. :D
Illiam Taal |
Mendedwall, just to clarify a couple of things:
How high are those walls?
Where is the cemetery, exactly? I've been picturing the north side of the hill, near the label that says "The Perch." It's likely the people up on the hill will want to know what's going on when they see the fire burning near its base.
For the drill, I'm picturing something like this: http://s.hswstatic.com/gif/hand-drill-1.jpg
But depending on how advanced this medieval fantasy world is, they could also have this style: http://oldtoolheaven.com/hand_drills/drillimg/d3lg.jpg
I just want to know what to expect if/when Illiam gets his hands on one, and how to describe it to Dolok, since he doesn't seem to know what it looks like.
Illiam Taal |
Btw, I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the way this is going. Some GMs get really annoyed when I don't behave the way they expect and mess up some of their plans or use a well-placed spell to end a high-level encounter before it even starts (this once happened in two encounters in a row, and the next monster we encountered inexplicably went straight for my spellbook).
Goruck of the Stone |
Still alive, I just had ambulance/EMS and other things pop up that's been keeping me away.
I didn't even realize we had a paladin and a puckish rogue!
