I am makng my ranger. Should I assume that orcs are (goblins (moria orcs), hobgoblins (mordor orcs) & bugbears (Uruk-Hai)). Or that orcs are a separate race from goblins. Just trying to pick the favored enemy.

If I GM'd this I would use basic Orcs as Uruk-Hai & make them Humanoid(Goblinoid) then have Bugbears be Uruk-Hai Berserkers.

That is why I was thinking of going Guide if I did go Ranger.

The Exchange

Don't forget spiders, worgs, trolls, dragons, and, well, men. Then there's the more eccentric enemies...

Trolls & Ogres seem to be the Same in ME.

EDIT: Whoops... Wrong Alias.

Dang, yeah. Someone ought to take the staff focused Magus as a hedge wizard; and then I should make Elros as a Bard. The Eldar are known to be powerful singers...

I am thinking of rebuilding to a Ranger(Guide, Skirmisher) going into the Weapon & Shield Combat Style.

Wouldn't need to change much other than giving my Armoured Kilt away at level 2.

Really wish I could easily enter my Piecemeal Armour into PCGen. BUT I could always use PCGen for the higher level stuff and then use Mythweaver for everything else.

How much time do we have left? And what do you guys think?

@Elros: Want me to take on a magus? I've been throwing the concept around ever since looking through the class, and I've got quite the interesting idea or two. And a bard could be quite helpful for the party; an elf makes more sense for it than a hobbit does anyway, what with, you know, magic and all.

All I can think of is Pippin singing while in Gondor.

Maybe switch out as many spells as possible for Masterpieces?

The Exchange

Loup - check out my PFS alias slypher (staff Magus) if you like. I'm pretty satisfied with him thus far.

Loup Blanc: Yeah, you take the Magus. I will rebuild to some kind of a Bard.

Alright, cool thing, Elros. I'm still trying to decide between hobbit or... well... anything else.

In my opinion all good LOTR parties have a Hobbit. They are the key to a successful quest.

This is my alias. I posted earlier as Gnomerulez. Here is the ranger I was proposing. I see someone else was thinking ranger. I would be happy to submit something else if needs be.

Additional Possessions; Bedroll, Winter Blanket, Soap, Explorer’s Outfit, Climbers kit, an earthenware mug made by his grandmother and various small wooden figurines in various states of whittling.

Background:

Spoiler:
Bhoors Thistledown is a Woodsman living in the lands between the great river and the Mirkwood. He was raised by his maternal grandmother Hilde. His mother had died in childbirth and his father passed just before his 10th birthday of fever, from a wound attained while logging. Bhoors was mentored by several of the other men in the small community after the death of his father. He was able to learn quite a bit; hunting, trapping, tracking, and worked in his teen years with the timber crews and huntsmen. About 4 years ago his grandmother died. Since that time Bhoors has spent more and more time wandering farther and farther into the wilds. He lives off the land and trades in pelts and furs when his travels bring him to civilization. He has grown increasingly concerned in that there is increased activity among the wildlings, and orcs in the region. Though he only speaks Westerness he has a fondness for maps and learning of places that for him have always been far off.
(While I am not sure where we will beginning Bhoors is a wanderer so that might be the explanation. If he has encountered forces that are working against the orcs or the enemy he would gladly lend an axe. His village is south of Beorn’s Carrock. Nearest human settlement would likely be Rohan. If the action is starting near Gondor tracking orcs between the Misty Mountains, Isengard and Mordor could easily lead him toward Gondor. At the close of the War of the Ring Saurman has agents in Bree and the Shire. If these exist tracking such unsavory suspicious types might have drawn him to Bree.)

Appearance:

Spoiler:
Bhoors is crowned with a head of firey red hair worn long, held out of his face by a wide sage green bandana. It has been a week or so since his last shave. He has bright alert greenish eyes. He has a smirking charm when he speaks when the situation is friendly that cuts his through his hard wild general look. He is clothed in deep maroons, browns and greens easily. His clothes and gear appear well kept though well weathered. He wears a sturdy suit of scale mail, whose scales are dull grey iron fastened on to a deep maroon leather backing. Knot work patterns race along leather straps and accents depicting bears. Around his waist is a broad leather wrap fastened with three thin belts chased with knot work bears. Amongst his gear a short bow and several light axes, worn on each hip and cross his back.

The Exchange

I don't really think a party can have too many rangers, but if you're interested in switching it up you could consider doing the Divine Hunter Paladin archetype. It's obviously a much different character to play, but you'd still be a medium-armored axe-swinging axe-throwing hunter. I, for one, would enjoy seeing that concept in action.

Not sure now. It looks like we have no hobbit.

The Exchange

I'm hoping Elros' bard is a hobbit. It's the most logical race for a bard, and the most logical class for a hobbit. I'd love to see a well-prepared archaeologist hobbit-bard.

He was suggesting Elros the elf bard and mentioned their powerful voices. Given the Hey-nonny-nonnies, instraments and such from Rivendel in The Hobbit I can see a elf bard working.

I reread the thread is it official or assumed we will be starting in and around the shire?

The Exchange

I guess we'll see what he does. I could also see an elf bard working, but that doesn't leave a lot of classes for the hobbit.
Hm... Perhaps I'll roll up a hobbit of some kind, just as a sample. Why not? I already have an elven archer and a human witch.

EDIT: Wait, I remember an application for a Hobbit monk underfoot adept. That counts, right?

Elros Bard rebuild.

I despise building Rangers right now... Especially Dwarven Rangers...

Elros is a Teleri elf. The son of Finriel and Camrist (close kin to Cirdan). Finriel had come from Aman with the Host of the Valar at the end of the First Age, and stayed for love of Camrist. Residing in Lindon at the court of Gil-Galad, his parents died in the war of the Last Alliance. Cirdan raised him afterwards and kept him close in the Grey Havens througout the Third Age.
He is a great singer, and something of the light of his mother, who saw the Two Trees, is in him as well.

Rumors of walking trees in the Shire have come to his attention, and he is there to investigate.

I'm wondering how best my dwarf here would fit in. Do you guys have any advice for him? Is barbarian a logical ME dwarf class? Want the best possible chance of playing this one.

Barbarian actually does seem to fit depending on the view of what Rage might entail. If it is a love of Battle that gives him Power then it makes sense. If it is him flying into a Blind Rage... Not so much.

Urban Barbarian actually fits. & IIRC you can pick up Medium Armour Proficiency and not suffer anything other than burning a Feat. But if it is feasible a Fighter Dip might work out better.

Though Wild Stalker Ranger might fit a bit better...

Nah he doesn't do rage for no reason. Only when fighting enemies.

Rangers have medium armour? did you mean heavy?

Sorry fixed it. It was supposed to be Urban Barbarian.

Can't wait to see what happens with this. I don't believe I've ever played in a low-magic setting before, should be interesting.

I am thinking if I don't get in this I might just open one of my own.

Though maybe not ME...

Hmmmmm . . . No Hobbit.

Perhaps I should consider making Roscoe Tosscobble master of the hobbit slingstaff. Ranged rogues are difficult maybe I should think urban ranger.

Scout Sniper with as many Vital Strike feats as you can get. Best Skirmisher in the Game.

Though I think Loup Blanc is thinking of being a Hobbit.

Well good. We need hobbitses

I'm still trying to figure out what a hobbit would even be. A rogue, bard, or reskinned ninja are the only things that make any sense to me. Maybe a martial type like a lore warden fighter or a ranger of some sort.

They're a hard race to give a class to, RP-wise.

I could see a sling using ranger if you go urban ranger you get trapfinding. Bullroarer Took was big enough to ride a full sized horse and knocked Golfibur's head clean off. So perhaps an out of character warrior type is not completely out of the realm of possibility.

True. I'm still considering a staff magus--makes sense with the hobbit love of walking sticks.

LOL Hobbit club magus.

That makes sense. I believe Bullroarer used a club so that could be fluffed to fit the Hobbitses.

The Exchange

I've come up with Jim Seeker, the sneaky ninja hobbit. I'm working on another hobbit, this time in the form of a tank (unless I decide at the last minute to make him a caster).
These are strictly for the inspiration (or outright pirating) of others.

I could see a Hobbit Ranger(Trapper). Or a Urban Ranger who favors one of the Hobbit realms.

Dark Archive

I would let all of the current characters in...but i don't have a start story yet ):

So looking forward to this, hope I'm selected. I love low magic settings.

*hopping around in excited anticipation Bhoors exclaims* "Lemme at em Lemme at em."

So, I'm finally done with my preliminary hobbit design: Darmo Hillbottom, thief and burglar extraordinaire (and a cook to boot). Nothing solid for backstory yet, but he'll probably have grown up between both the Shire and Bree, practicing skullduggery and subterfuge in the Man settlement.

And, per D-Kal's request, he is Well-Prepared.

EDIT: link wasn't working originally, should be good now.

The Exchange

As much as I'd like to see "well prepared", won't you need weapon finesse?

As soon as we hit second level, he'll be picking up Finesse Rogue. At 1st level, he'll mainly be skill monkey and support, and the occasional hit would be nice, but not totally needed haha. It's still better than the bard I had drawn up.

The Exchange

I suppose you can still do plenty of ranged, and +1 can still hit animals & such. Finesse rogue makes sense, but I know leveling can be slow in PbP.

Indeed. I was hesitant about the choice, but I figured it'd be nice to have that ability. "Oh, darn, I wish we'd thought to buy a map... oh, wait... I have one right here!"

And especially with the requisite Sleight of Hand check, it could be played up as something he nicked without even realizing he stole it.

Woo yea we are in. So what do we have so far?

The Exchange

Of the most recent/active posters, I have:

Tank Fighter, human - Azaelas
Skilled Fighter, human - Deodin
Mounted Charger, human - Beadwof
Angry Crusher, dwarf - Thurgen
Vicious Axeman, human - Bhoors
Clever Bard, elf - Elros
Sneaky Thief, hobbit - Loup
Swift Archer, half-elf - D-Kal

We have no healer (though a wand could fix that). Not even anyone trained in the "heal" skill. We have a good assortment of other skills, and a good low-magic party balance. All of the logical races are represented, with humans taking the bulk of the composition.

For now, our most glaring shortcoming is a lack of healing. I'd say when we get some cash, we'll want to stock up on potions. Eventually we'll need a wand. Otherwise, we'll need a cleric/oracle/witch/2nd bard.

I'll pick up a point of Heal skill, and switch out Chord of Shards to pick up Cure Light Wounds. That should serve.

The Exchange

I've just swapped out "Escape Artist" for "Heal" in Treggor's page. I can't afford a healer's kit though. Actually, with my starting gold, I couldn't afford a healer's kit if that was the only thing I bought.

I'm still interested, I just haven't been active in the advanced hobbit building conversation ;). Elf Druid with some healing and such.

The Exchange

Good point! You'd slipped my mind. Updated notes:

Tank Fighter, human - Azaelas
Skilled Fighter, human - Deodin
Mounted Charger, human - Beadwof
Angry Crusher, dwarf - Thurgen
Vicious Axeman, human - Bhoors
Forest Druid, elf - Tanis
Clever Bard, elf - Elros
Sneaky Thief, hobbit - Loup
Swift Archer, half-elf - D-Kal

We now have 2 healers (looks like I can swap back out of Heal skill). Tanis also brings more ranged balance. If we all make it, that's a party of 9 with a pretty full balance.
