Legacy of Fire!

Game Master mathpro18

It has been a week since you set off from the town of Solku and while you have no clue where you are heading(somewhere in the northern scrublands of Katapesh), each of you have set off on the journey for your own reasons. Some of you are here to earn your freedom, others to find a lost loved one, yet others for other reasons. You and your traveling companions are just finishing up another long warm night in the desert and the caravan is stopping to sleep through the heat of the day, since it is far to hot to travel during the day. As everyone in the group gathers up, people are told by the head of the caravan that you will be reaching your destination the next night. A small cheer erupts from the weary travelers in the caravan who are tired of seeing nothing but empty desert and the occasional mirage.

The head of the caravan requests some help unloading some supplies from one of the wagons. It houses some tents, water, and a little bit of food. He also requests that someone help him with taking care of the camels before you all bed down for the day. You're free to do as you wish with this time but I would suggest finding some shade and getting some sleep. It has been getting well over 100 degrees during the day over the last week and you have a feeling its going to get there today but right now its in the upper 70's. And unfortunately for you, its another clear day which means there is no reprieve from the heat in the form of cloud cover.

An expository post for the sake of dotting...

Vedic didn't sleep much. He was one of those sorts of people that seemed to possess a practically endless supply of manic energy. It wasn't that he was twitchy, or talked fast, or was unable to focus. It was more like he simply didn't pay much attention to what his body was telling him. He would often forget to eat or drink, and he would stay awake until he practically fell asleep mid sentence. What ever was going on in his head must have been far more important to him than small things like hunger or fatigue.

He ended his days the same way he began them, with a book in his hands, muttering incomprehensible and seemingly unrelated things to himself.

A number of people in the caravan had already decided he was crazed and a bad omen, but he was uncommonly good with maps and languages and had helped them find their way a week ago when they they could not see the sky to navigate because of a few days of bad haze, so the caravan head tolerated the pale elf's strange behavior.

That day was no different than any other. As soon as he'd laid out his bed roll, the book was open and he was drawing in the sand with a stick, trying to work out some kind of mathematical sequence.

Grune helps to unload the caravan before trying to find a piece of shade to doze away the day. He keeps his weapon unsheathed an near at hand It's been years since he's been away from the bustle of the city and the empty expanse of the desert makes him uneasy.

Male Elf Ranger 1

Ymril gazed out over the sands, his scabbard held loosely in his left hand. Blue eyes played out over through a loose veil worn to keep grit out of his face. He walked most of the way, alongside the caravan rather than apart of it. He helped with the camels for a time before the sun became to oppressive. After he was done he took his blanket, and making a shallow hole large enough to bring his body to the cooler sands under the surface, covered himself. As he engaged in his reverie the sand would slowly cover him so that when he finished and emerged to travel again he would appear as if from the sands themselves.

Female Halfling Oracle of the Heavens (Seeker) 1

Sarianne has spent the majority of the journey hiding amidst the supplies to avoid walking and the relentless sun, and she certainly hasn't been a bit of help with lifting or caring for the camels. In her mind she has made a sterling contribution by not robbing everybody in the caravan blind, thank you very much. Of course she also uses her create water cantrip a great deal to keep the travelers and animals from bleating too much, but thats just common sense.

When it comes time to bed down she settles for a spot under the shade of the caravan, shaking her head as she watches Vedic being mad with his books, Grune sleeping next to a naked greatsword, and Ymril playing in the sand. Well I suppose somebody needs to look after these rubes while we find Haleen, and there's only muggins about, honestly its a wonder they can dress themselves.

Sorry for the lack of posting...will get things moving tomorrow as I don't have time to post today and I think I want to do a little foreshadowing here.

Ymril and Vedic:

As you drift off to sleep you have a dream. You're in a ruined city and there are all sorts of creatures walking the streets. You even see a man that looks human but as you get closer transforms into a large Gnoll. He starles at you and lunges to attack you but a woman steps in front of you. You recognize her as Heleen and for a moment are relieved to have found her but she is quickly torn to shreds by the large gnoll and try as you might you are unable to save her. You wake with a start and you are covered in sweat. Your heart is racing but you are able to convince your self it was just a nightmare but you are unable to get back to sleep. Thankfully you've gotten just enough sleep to avoid being fatigued. When you wake its about 104 degrees out and the temperature is still slowly rising. Do either of you do anything?

Vedic wakes wide eyed, and immediately grabs something to write with and begins frantically writing.

Recording as many details as I can remember

Male Elf Ranger 1

Ymril's eyes snapped open. He lay still in the darkness, the cool earth about him. Twisting, he rolls to his stomach and draws his feet under him and slowly rises. He sees the light of the desert peak into his resting place as he pushes the blanket up and feels its heat make pinpricks of sweat on his face. His eyes sweep the outside to check its clear before standing. Reaching down he gathers his weapons and gear, shaking the blanket off and moves to a dune, his eyes scanning the horizon. His mouth is tight, the lips looking like a razor cut across his face. He stands there, still for a time, before returning to the wagons and resting in the shade. He sits with a blade across his lap while he meditates, a frown on his face.

Eventually the day passes and at about 8 at night the rest of you are roused from your sleep. "Wake up you lazy bunch! the caravan leader shouts. "We finally get to make it to Sultains Claw tonight and you all get to meet the woman who hired you. I suggest you be on your best behavior."

Vedic stood, spend a few moments magically cleansing himself of dust and grime, and went to wait for the caravan to start moving.

Prestidigitation to stay clean. Vedic is fastidious.

Female Halfling Oracle of the Heavens (Seeker) 1

Sarianne rises bothers Vedic for a presitidigitation, and at the first opportunity flits into the wagons to find a nice secluded hiding place to avoid the sun and any work that might come her way.

Grune get up and dusting himself off, get ready to continue the journey.

Male Elf Ranger 1

Ymril stands and shakes some of the sand from his clothes. He looks out across the starlit dunes as the caravan prepares to move, picking at a pack of rations as he does so. After a short time he moves down to take his customary place walking alongside the caravan.

HP 8/8, AC 14, Fort +1, Ref, +2, Will +3, Per +7, Change Energy 9/9

Whale cleaning his newly met Halfling "sister", Vedic looked around to the rest of his adopted family. "Quite the interesting assortment of children Haleen raised..." he mused.

It takes about an hour for the caravan to get organized and leave and you are all eager to be on the way. Its been a long trip from Solku and you are all eager to meet up with Garavel and the princess that have hired you all for a mission that might just lead you to finding your missing mother. As the caravan leader said you should be making it to Sultains Claw sometime tonight and that is where you will be meeting everyone you will be working for.

The wagons travel through the sand covered landscape and you very easily grow bored as nothing shows much life around you. You can just make out the immense outline of Pale Mountain looming over the mid-evening horizon like a tombstone and it seems to slowly get bigger as the caravan moves along. Finally, after what feels like hours, you see a craggy tree appear over the horizon. After you crest the next hill it becomes obvious why this area is called Sultan's Claw. With five immense, mostly leafless branches, the growth looks more like a giant skeletal claw talon than a thing of living wood.

You crest another hill and a caravan of a half-dozen wagons and a large tent clustered aroun the distinctive tree comes into view. Camels in a nearby pen prance in agitation, and a clutch of confused goats and livestock wander the grounds around the wagons. Perhaps a dozen men and women rush around the campsite, chasing down an animal or hastening toward the center of the cluster, near the Sultain's Claw, with pails of water in their hands.

It soon becomes clear why the people are rushing around as you see flames explode out of one of the wagons. Lush orange and red flames engulf an elaborate wooden wagon emblazoned with painted moons and stars. A gout of smoke pours from an open door.

The caravan leader stops the caravan of wagon's and shouts "GO HELP THEM! SAVE THE WAGONS AND SUPPLIES!"

You have a few options here:
1) You could try to put out the flames. You can either carry buckets full of water to the wagon or with a DC 15 Strength check you can pick up the entire barrel full of water and douse the flames that way.
2)You can move some of the other wagons away from the flaming one. This will require a DC 17 strength check.
3) You can try and heal the people that were/are being burned by the flames.
4) You can try and deal with the frightened animals and help get them back in their pens.

Male Elf Ranger 1

Ymril rushes toward the flame, pulling a cloth across his face as he does so. He grabs a bucket and immediately moves to douse the fire.

Grune charges down to the caravan, his adrenalin pumping, (Rage on, STR bonus), and grabbing a wagon he begins to drag it away from the flames.

STR check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Female Halfling Oracle of the Heavens (Seeker) 1

Sarianne mutters darkly to herself as she strides forward and snaps,

"Nugretaw!" Gesturing dismissively, as two gallons of water pours down upon the fire. She stands there doing this repeatedly until the flames abate.

Uses Create Water, choosing the downpour option.

HP 8/8, AC 14, Fort +1, Ref, +2, Will +3, Per +7, Change Energy 9/9

Guess who memorized Drench today!

Vedic's eyebrows raise and he moves toward the flames with Sarianne, holding a hand aloft. A bolt of what looks like a Ray of Frost leaps out and snaps in the air above the wagon. Clouds began rolling out from that point, dumping heavy raindrops in a surprising deluge.

A 5' square area of fire is extinguished.

"Sarianne, put your waters where the flames are thickest. I will handle the rest."

With the help of Sarianne and Vedic the fire is quickly put out and the people around you look rather amazed at your powers.

"Can you do that again?" one little boy asks as he looks up at Sarianne with amazement.

Just as things start to settle down again in camp a large man comes out of the tent in the middle of town. He approaches the group and clears his throat. "...The princess would like to speak with all of you reguarding your quick thinking and her hiring you." The man turns to leave and everyone gives him a wide birth.

Female Halfling Oracle of the Heavens (Seeker) 1

"Sure I can," says Sarianne winking at the child even as she dumps two gallons of water over him, "I am an oracle of Sarenrae afterall."

Turning to the big man she shrugs and makes to follow in his wake.

Male Elf Ranger 1

Ymril follows after Sarianne, moving just behind her like a protective pack animal.

Rage off

Grune follows along, somewhat disappointed by the under-appreciation of his feat of strength

Vedic chuckles and Prestidigitates the child dry again as he begins to follow the big guard.

Female Halfling Oracle of the Heavens (Seeker) 1

Sarianne gives Vedic a level look as she intones with mock piety,

"I must show the world Sarenrae's bounty, must I not?"

HP 8/8, AC 14, Fort +1, Ref, +2, Will +3, Per +7, Change Energy 9/9

Looking up into the bright sunlit sky, Vedic gives his adopted sister an amused look. "In a desert? I suspect these people know much of Sarenrae's bounty. She is most generous with it here."

Female Halfling Oracle of the Heavens (Seeker) 1

"Busy body goddess, gets everywhere, I ask you Vedic, what good is it for a cat burglar to be an oracle of the goddess of sunlight and honesty? I keep telling you I'm not reforming!" Sarianne moans, directing the last plaintively to the heavens.

You all enter a very large tent and you see a very attractive young woman standing over some maps. She looks very lost in thought and doesn't acknowledge you when you enter. The large man that came to get you clears his throught and the woman starts and then looks up.

"Thank you Garavel that will be all." she says and the man leaves. She then takes a few steps towards the group and smiles.

"Firstly I want to introduce myself. My name is Almah Roveshki and I want to thank you for taking on such a dangerous mission. The city of Kalmarine is a very dangerous one and it takes brave souls to explore it. I also suspect that since all of you have connections to Haleen that you will be searching for her as you go. That is fine as long as you don't let it interfear with your work for me. she pauses and reaches to a desk behind her and brings a waterskin to her lips before continuing.

"Secondly I want to thank you for your quick response to our little disaster there. I unfortunately believe that the person who lived in that wagon wasn't able to get out before it was on fire and as such I want you to recover his body and then investigate how it happened. We have little room for murderers in this group and if there is one here I need you to find out. Take all the time you need and report back to me when your done."

Well you guys can either conduct interviews or investigate the ruined wagon. There are a total of 16 people that you can interview. To do so requires a diplomacy check. If you want to investigate the wagon I'll need a dc 20 perception check.

Male Elf Ranger 1

"Any information on who the corpse belonged to before I go check it over?"

Female Halfling Oracle of the Heavens (Seeker) 1

Sarianne nods wearing a sour expression, and after Ymril's question has been answered addresses the group with her usual exasperated tones,

"Well lucky us, hey? Lets take a look at this mess first before conducting any interviews, perhaps we can find something that will help us trip the culprit up."

Heading over to the wagon once their conversation with Almah Roveshki is concluded she examines the wagon in exhaustive detail, looking in particular for the cause of the fire.

After her mundane search she casts detect magic and scans the wagon for any signs of magical activity.

Takes 20 on Perception for a 24, or 25 for traps.
