Cats aren't associated with Death in local cultures, exactly, but many indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin consider Jaguars to be guardians of the forest and some even consider them to be ancestral spirits or at least messengers from the afterlife.
The machete wielder drops his weapon and backs away, making sure to keep his eyes on the predator he is facing until he feels safe enough to run. And then he runs.
The rest of the team watches, realizing that they have moved to swat a mosquito with a hammer.
