I though Jubolist was difficult to deal with...
...for the love of all the gods, enough already. Both of you just stop and think about what it is you are doing. You both are wrong in your actions no matter how you justify them. Corax did you order your men to cut down these trees.
without waiting for answer...
Yes. Yes, you did.
The large knight turns to the Nixie, expecting to see a smile on her face for the words he just used towards Corax and hoping his next words wipe that smile from her face.
Melianse did you use magic against men that were following orders and plan to hold them as hostages till you receive your ransom. That answer is yes.

He lets his words sink into each group as he looks back and forth between them. Hoping that his words show them hope ridiculous the situation is. The way I see it, you have two options here.

I am Sir Andreas Eisfalke Von Ulm, you may or may not have heard of me or those that fight beside me. We defeated the Stag Lord and have created something better in his place. The dragon throne has granted us the right to administer justice to the region against all forms of banditry. This does include theft, and it also includes ransom. Do I have the right to enforce my justice on you...maybe, maybe not. I do however have the right to protect my people. If they cannot travel the lands without being forced to replace every tree that they piss on...or being threatened with death over lumber rights. I will protect my people.

Option one is the two of you fight it out and do harm to each other. Most likely the trees do not get replanted, nor do they get used to make anything. They will rot here and benefit neither of you. Someone will die. Someone will loose and it will be both of you. Someone will come in and pick up the pieces from your conflict because you are too weak from battle to do anything at all about it.

Andreas turns and starts to walk to his horse. Mounting he adjust his horse so that he can look at them both.

Option two is this. The trees will be removed from here and sent to my town where they will be used to benefit those in need. To make ridge poles for homes. The masts of fishing vessels to feed the people. Corax and ALL of his men will move their operation ten miles north to another grove of coachwood. They will clear the woods and replant a single tree for everyone they fell. Those trees will be taken to the town on the north shore of the Tuskwater. You will be given a fair price for the timber. You are to never return to this region. Melianse, I personally will ride to meet this Dryad and barter with her to replace the trees. You have my word on it. I also will provide seed from the old Sycamore tree that stands to the east of here. I desire to see such a specimen grow in another region of the greenbelt.

If either of you take up arms against the other, I will step in, and it will be resolved quickly. This is a large land with plenty of room for all. I want you to coexist with one another and to thrive in these harsh lands.

My offer expires the moment we leave this grove and are out of sight. It is your call. Fight, die and no one wins...or...live and both of you get what you want. Your call.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

Andreas urges his horse to head out of the grove.

The nixie Melianse looks hurt and offended at Rillka’s words. ”You would call me a thief when these men trespass and steal away the trees of my home? They would not listen to my pleas, they would not be dissuaded by harmless sounds and images. I charmed the men, but not to harm them. Only to stave off the murder in that one’s eyes. He would kill me and pillage my home and you would begrudge me a simple enchantment to make some of them look on me kindly? You, who also know what it is to be small in a world of the tall?” She shakes her head sadly.

Corax’s glare is indeed murderous and it seems likely that his hesitancy to harm his own men has indeed delayed his malice long enough for your party to arrive and mediate the dispute.

As Andreas begins to lay out his solution and turns his horse away, Corax looks angry at first but then seems to recognize that he is getting the better part of this deal. He will get his men back, plus be pointed to an even richer woodland with a ready buyer to boot. He nods his agreement to the terms and turns to watch the Nixie expectantly with a smug grin.

Melianse gives a resigned sigh. ”Demanding reparations is not the same as what you say, a ransom. But you will promise to return the balance to my home, though you were not the one who committed the wrong? I will trust you to return and fulfill your word.” She says the words in a defeated tone and makes a dismissive gesture and the lumberjacks she had charmed sway on their feet and touch their temples and rub their eyes as they regain their autonomy again. With the slightest splash and swish of fins, she descends back into the deeper water and safety of her pool.

Corax moves to walk alongside Andreas as he rides toward his next destination. "Thanks for the help back there. They're good men, would hate to have cut them down just to get at that fishy little fey. You know, you aren't obligated to keep promises to that filth. Just come back with a good net next time. That'll stop her carping, eh?" He grins up at his new customer and chuckles at his own joke.

So where to next? Straight to the Dryad? Take the felled trees back home? If you had a preplanned path, you'll need to let me know.

Andreas stops his mount and listen to Rillka rip into Corax. He does not turn to watch, he just waits.
As she finishes and rides up next to him, he nods at her with an approving smile. He lets her pass him and he turns his horse around to look down at Corax. His vision blurring out everything else but the logger. His voice is filled with anger.
You do not like Fey...she did nothing to you other than defend her home. You have the gull to stand there and talk s$+& about her after I saved your ass from certain death. I took up your debt to saves the lives of your men. I gave you the location of a lucrative grove of coachwood. I gave my word to repair the damage that you caused, and you want me to go back on it. You want me to dishonor myself for what...because you cannot get past your oversized sense of worth and your dislike of Fey. Even when it would have cost you the lives of your men you still pushed forward with your unfounded assumptions of her. I should string you up from the trees right now. F%~& it I am. I am hanging your sorry ass right here and now!
His vision clears up and he again sees the whole picture before him.
Andreas snaps out of his inner thoughts and looks down at the logger. His voice remains calm and neutral
Andreas never says the above words, these are just the thoughts that he wants to say out loud but does not...lol

You do not like Fey and I understand that. This is their home as well, and they are here to stay. We are the uninvited guests here. We will show respect and be nice neighbors. You will show them respect even when they do not return it. If you have problems with any Fey you will come to us, and we will deal with it. I want all of us to live together and coexist. You will find that we have made friends with a wide range of people in the Stolen lands. It does no one any good to be fighting everyone you do not like. Just leave them alone and move on. Now I wish you the safest of travels to that new grove. Be careful and I look forward to seeing you at the city.

He turns and continues to ride. When he catches up to Rillka....
umm taxes on our timber?hmmm...is this a flat fee per a tree or we talking about per a pound?

Corax blinks and frowns over what seems to him a radical shift in demeanor followed by a curt dismissal. "Just sayin' you have options, m'lord. You want to treat those Fey like people, that's your prerogative. But they'll show their true colors sooner or later. Bloody pests!" And with this final pronouncement of his biased opinion, Corax gathers his men and follows your orders.

Your party begins the time consuming task of exploring the area around Melianse's home and you soon see the appeal of the region. The river feeds many smaller streams and supports a rich array of foliage including many edible plants and medicinal herbs.
This hex (G16) represents a resource that will contribute to your settlement's economy once it can be claimed.

In fact, your exploration disturbs a large grizzly bear foraging nearby! The beast stands up on it's hind legs in alarm, though he does not attack, snuffling at the air to assess the threat you pose.
Duzz is still in the group but if you would like him to attempt wild empathy, etc, I would prefer someone else call for/roll that action.

As the party departs the nixie's grove, Albert reflects on what happened.

It does not seem right that men laboring on behalf of the kingdom should be subject to the whim of creatures such as her. But we must, for now, avoid fights that we cannot win.

It is even worse however that these lowly lumberjacks do not know their place and challenge the direct proclamation of their rightful sovereign. They are fortunate that he did not cut them down himself. Had they disrespected him before an audience, it may have been necessary for me to take the initiative.

Toward the end of Albert and Rillka's watch, they see a curious sort of flying creature rise high into the air just past full dark. It is quite distant, somewhere between your camp and the Tuskwater. Too far to make out much detail, but it seems to be glowing a fiery red and oddly enough, performs a few loops before it descends. No one sees it again for the rest of the night.

The dawn breaks on a cool Rova (September) morning, it is Sunday, the 10th day of the month. You see to your various morning rituals, break your fast on rations that have frankly seen better days and are nearly finished breaking camp when a hail from the south calls your attention. As you look up, you see two figures approaching on horseback. One is the familiarly strapping figure of Kesten Garess, the other is distinctly less strapping and completely unfamiliar. A feminine voice rings out from this second as they draw closer, slowing their mounts from a trot. ”I told you I spotted their campfire last night. Oh ye of little faith!” She chides Kesten teasingly, he dutifully rolls his eyes in reply before he dismounts.

He makes formal introductions, ”My Lordship Sir Andreas Eisfalke Von Ulm and Honored Grand Council of the Sword Marches Barony, I hereby present the Lady Seraphina Medvyed, most recently of Stoneclimb. No doubt this would a better introduction in the town proper but someone was a bit impatient.” He waves a hand toward the well outfitted Seraphina, who dismounts her horse on the away side, fiddles with something a moment and when she steps into view, she wears a beautiful noble gown in green trimmed with gold. She affects a practiced curtsy and then beams up at you all with a wide smile.

Though she looks the part of a Brevic Noblewoman, there is something exotic in her features. The slight tilt of almond shaped eyes, the rich, sun-kissed tone of her skin. It's clear she has some other ancestry as well.

”I do hope I have caused no trouble, rushing out to meet you like this. I commissioned my new robes from The Old Beldame and when I went to procure them, she told me that you had been by to see her. I did hope then that I might catch you up. You see, I need to thank you. Thank you for finishing what I could not. The Stag Lord had countless victims, of this there can be no doubt. But I believe I can speak for their survivors when I express how grateful I am that you destroyed that monster. It does not bring our loved ones back, but they must rest easier in their graves now that their murderer has finally met his end.”

Her amber eyes fill with unshed tears as she pours forth the gratitude in her heart. Kesten looks down at his clasped hands awkwardly, waiting for the tension of the moment to diffuse.

”Oh, and I also wanted to submit myself to offer what aid I can. We have been weeks on the road and I am simply desperate to be useful again.” She says in earnest with a hopeful expression.

The large knight scratches at the stubble that has grown on his face since the last left the city.
Lady Medvyed, tis an honor and a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I just wished it was under better circumstances. The Stag Lord was a blight on the land, and it was our duty to remove him from his corrupt rule over the less fortunate. We are blessed to have succeeded in that goal. May the gods watch over his victims.

He looks her up and down as if sizing her up for the travel to come.
It would be wrong of me to send you back to the city without an escort. Granted I know Lord Garress and I respect his abilities. That being said I would not send him alone back to the city. Even with another able body person. The region is just starting to be safe, but not safe enough. We came across a Hydra not too long ago around these parts. Not a creature I would want to mess with.
He pauses as he watches her reaction.
Only a fool would travel out in these lands without knowing how to take care of themselves.

He adjusts his shoulders with the weight of his armor weighing down on him.
You two will be accompanying us till we get back home. We are traveling to the northwest of here looking for a Dryad. She has some...
we will discuss it as we ride. There are many miles to ride before we even get to the general area of this Dryad. Besides, this will be giving you plenty of stories to share with your cousin Gird. Tall Folk is correct, Rillka tilts her head towards Andreas, this is an untamed region, and Lord Garess would not have agreed to accompany you in search of us for something as simple as a thank you for doing what needed done. There must be some greater reason for your travels. Something urgent enough that you should not delay the telling for courtly pleasantries in the middle of a field?

Seraphina's eyes widen at Sir Andreas’ news. "A hydra? My, that does sound thri… er, threatening.” She casts her eyes downward, looking somewhat chastened by the Baron’s tone of disapproval. ”I have been accused of being somewhat reckless and foolish in the past but I assure you that I do learn from my mistakes.” She cuts her eyes sideways to Kesten at this as if expecting him to argue, but he merely looks somewhat dubious and amused.

”We knew from the old Beldame that we traveled in your wake and I did make certain of your whereabouts before we traveled too far from her home. Lord Garess did insist I should be prepared to flee if we encountered anything too daunting. I grew up on the verge of the Gronzi and I have explored some of the Greenbelt myself, so I am not unfamiliar with the potential challenges.” She adds with a lift of her chin. She smiles brightly to hear that you wish for them to travel along with the party.

Kesten barks a laugh at the word ’agreed’ and Seraphina blinks rapidly, turning her glimmering gaze to the halfling and then looks down at the fine gown she wears. She seems to think better of it now that introductions are made and tugs at a band of gold trim on her sleeve and the gown fades back into a modest explorer’s outfit in more drab tones of green and brown.

”I assure you, my gratitude is no idle fancy. The Stag Lord killed my father and three of my brothers. My surviving family was forced to leave our holdings and retreat to the safety of Stoneclimb. I vowed to avenge my fallen kin and though I came close, I nearly perished in the attempt.” She hangs her head in shame at this admission. ”Were it not for the vigilance of the Sootscales, I would not be here today. I owe a great debt, both to them and to you. I have come to see it repaid.”

”My primary skill is with the arcane arts and while you do not suffer any lack on that front, I do have a rare gift for healing with my magic. It may seem a bit strange but I can kindle life with fire.”

Kesten nods approvingly. "I can vouch for the Lady Seraphina and her talents. Being healed with fire is rather an odd sensation. But it works. And now that she has been appropriately disabused of the notion that a Mage belongs on the front lines..." He casts a stern eye toward the fiery noblewoman and she ducks her head in acquiescence. "She will be useful support." He concludes.

And with that you are soon on your way again. Seraphina chats animatedly about her cousin Gird. Seems they were close as children being nearly the same age, but saw less of each other in adolescence after her surviving family moved to Stoneclimb.

The sun is well past it's zenith when your efforts disturb another den of creatures. Only Seraphina's keen eyes notice the threat ahead, but she is only able to call an ineffectual warning before a trio of lizards about the size of small dogs rush out from the brush. Each has two horns, one on either side of its head, and green scales that crackle with sparks of lightning.

Knowledge (Arcana) DC 12:
These are Shocker Lizards, magical beasts with the ability to generate non-lethal electrical attacks.

Knowledge (Arcana) DC 17:
While generally not a serious threat alone, if two or more shocker lizards are within 20 feet of each other, they can work together to create a lethal shock of greater magnitude over a 20 foot radius.

The lizards scramble out towards your mounted party, causing the steeds not trained for combat to whinny in fear. There is a snap and crackle in the air that causes your hair to stand on end like static as small bolts of electricity arc between their horns and then increase in size as they begin to arc toward each other.

"Quickly!" Seraphina dismounts as she cries her warning, "Shocker lizards, kill or scatter them, before they can discharge!" But it is too late as a dome of electricity blasts out from the central lizard, zapping Andreas, Rillka, Albert, and Saorise as well as their mounts!

Listening as Sir Andreas and Rillka voice their concerns (or suspicions), she remains quiet, studying Seraphina's reaction breathing a bit easier as things seem to sort themselves out.

Enjoying the banter as they travel, she is completely caught off-guard when the lizards charge, reacting quickly to avoid the worst of the shock, her body’s natural resilience against some kinds of energy further protecting her.

Greetings, Sir Kesten, he bows from your cousin Albert Garess. I see you are no stranger to these lands.

Kesten gives a bow in return. ”I appreciate the sentiment, my Lord. But it is unnecessary. My father has cut ties with me and I with him. His title will pass to my younger brother, Kol and his lady wife, when he weds.” His eyes flicker to Seraphina at this, who seems uncommonly interested in the state of her saddle for the moment. ”Nor has Restov renewed my contract. I am well and truly a free man until my services are once again engaged.” He quirks an eyebrow almost expectantly, but says no more.

Saorise finds Seraphina’s story odd, after all, young noblewomen do not typically go about swearing blood oaths and vowing vengeance. But she seems sincere, all the same. All the bard really notices that strikes as off about her demeanor is that she appears self-conscious of her hands, which are concealed by sturdy leather gloves.

Something about her tickles a vague recollection, though, and when Kesten speaks of his brother, Kol, it finally snaps into place. This woman was a hot commodity on the marriage market about two years back and word was that she was all but engaged to Kol Garess when she disappeared from Brevic high society completely.

Rillka’s snowball strikes home and Ser Andreas is quick to finish the wounded shocker lizard off. He issues his challenge and directs his mount to stomp down on the next one nearby. Daisey misses the nimble creature with her first hoof, but it’s dodge places it directly in the path of her other hoof as it comes down.

Kesten dismounts and moves into position as he draws his longsword and shield. He takes up a protective stance adjacent to the two ruling council members he can reach. Kesten has been rebuilt into a bodyguard, so he will put himself adjacent to as many council members as possible and prepare to negate or intercept attacks as needed.

Lord Evan Garess, father to Kesten and Kol, is head of a wealthy and respected branch of the Garess noble house. He is first-cousin to House Garess' Head, Howlan, and known to be a social climber. He has spoken openly against Howlan's official adoption of his Dwarven ward, Toval Golka, and disputes the validity of his being named Howlan's heir.

As such, Lord Evan has an over-developed sense of propriety and high expectations concerning his sons, especially his heir. He was embarrassed when word of Kesen's involvement with a low-born weaver's daughter became public knowledge. He thus, "disowned" him as a punishment and Kesten removed himself from society to serve Restov as a mercenary. It seems likely that he could have won his way back into his father's good graces with distinguished service. But when Tania wrote to Kesten to inform him she was pregnant, he abandoned his hopes of reconciliation and returned to wed the mother of his child.

As a show of good faith toward his younger brother, Kesten signed away all claim to his father's title and wished Kol well.

The sensation is utterly strange, light and warmth, like being blasted by a hot desert wind. The crackling roar in your ears as the caress of flames bathes away your wounds.

You finish your exploration just in time to watch the setting sun as you stop to set up camp once again. Oddly enough, Seraphina's mount disappears with a wave of her hand once she has removed her pack. Saorise's guess that it is a summon seems accurate, but she can't tell any more than that.

Seraphina smiles, keeping her voice low so as not to disturb the others. "It is uncommon, I grant you. Though it never seemed so to me when I was little. My mother had the talent as well, you see. The foliage seems to grow more dense and lush as you ride in a northwesterly direction. Eventually, you cross some sort of boundary where the trees part to reveal a peaceful forest glade dappled with sunlight. A small pond lies placidly at the roots of an enormous oak tree with a scattering of leaves floating upon its surface. Birdsong twitters from the branches high above.

Two figures draw your attention, a masculine creature with the furry legs of a goat and a set of curling ram horns extending from his temples, paces with agitation. He seems on guard over the feminine silhouette that kneels by the water’s edge, weeping softly, her tears falling into the pool to create tiny ripples in the still water. Her flesh resembles pale wood and her vibrantly golden hair that of leaves and blossoms. She is adorned in vines and floral foliage in lieu of clothing.

She looks up with a gasp of alarm as your party enters the glade. The horned creature makes as if to draw his bow, but she raises a forestalling hand to him and so he merely moves to place himself between your group and her. She speaks softly, the tone of her voice sweet and melodious like music carried on the gentle breeze.

”Bold knight and brave companions, I have heard of your noble campaign here among the Narlmarches. That you destroyed the murderous human who blasphemed against the Elk Father. I have known our meeting approached for some time. Please, be welcome to my glade, and do not be afraid within its boundary. Sense Motive DC 16:
You sense some underlying disagreement from Tiressia with Andreas' assertion that the region is healing. But she seems unwilling to do so openly, perhaps out of courtesy.

Tiressia nods and gives a relieved smile to Saorise. "The honor is mine. Your planetouched friend is correct. I am the Dryad of this wood. I am acquainted with the Nixie, Melianse, as well." She looks up into the boughs of the surrounding trees with a sorrowful expression. "We are saddened by her loss."

Saorise:
You recall that dryads are closely linked to the woods they inhabit, able to communicate freely with all plant life. This suggests she is apt to be very knowledgeable of what goes on in the forest. They are also irrevocably bonded to one tree in particular and cannot stray from it for long. The great oak that stands in this glade is almost certainly her bonded tree. It's destruction would end her life as well.

"My lord, unless I'm mistaken, I believe the lovely Lady Tiressia is actually she whom we seek. Thank you for welcoming us to your grove, 'tis an honor." she says with a small elegant bow.

Ah yes, the joys of not having KN Nature and it being a trained skill only. LOL

Andreas almost looks ashamed of this mistake but pushes onward.
My apologies Lady Tiressia, I did not know.

"We are saddened by her loss." I am assuming they mean the loss of the trees and not the loss of her the nixie????

When last we saw Melianse, she was in good health. The loss of her trees was hurtful to her. The situation was tense, and it could have led to the death of many, and we did not want that to happen. I personally gave my word that I would seek you out to help replace those trees she lost. How that can be accomplished is yet to be determined. Her desires are beyond my comprehension. While I understand wanting to replace those trees, but acquiring fully grown trees to do so is impossible without magic...and magic is something I know very little about.

Andreas follows Falchos' gaze to the south and back to the creature. His gaze is quick to take in the wound on his shoulder as he addresses the Dryad.

Andreas is assuming that she disagrees with all that we have done since the stag lord has been dealt with. He feels that there is something else he did out this way that we did not know of.

Lady Tiressia, we are neighbors, and I pray for a very long time to come. However, if there is more that the Stag Lord has done around the region that has not been dealt with...
He steps forward with determination.
...we must know of it. Only then can we remove it and deal with the outcome. What evil has he done in the south that has brought injuries to your companion?

With the understanding of the dryad's tie to her tree, and the surrounding forest as a whole, the severity of Melianse's reaction to her trees being cut down becomes much clearer. "We are truly sorry for what has befallen her wood, and genuinely seek to help, and have already taken measures to prevent her from experiencing such harm in the future."

It is truly impressive what you have accomplished here, Albert responds to Rillka. I had heard rumors back in Brevoy - that's what brought me here - but they hardly do justice to your deeds.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12

Albert follows Andreas's lead in responding to Tiressia, though with less enthusiasm as he does not care what happens to some trees.

The men tormenting your friend have been ordered by their king to remain clear of the grove, so you may at least be relieved to know that no further harm shall come to her.

Lol, yes, she means the trees. "Her loss" as in the loss belonging to her. Funnily enough, it occurred to me that the phrasing could be misconstrued but then decided I was overthinking it. XD

Tiressia nods in understanding. ”You are uncommonly kind, good ser. I will give you the means to uphold your word.” She reaches into her golden leaf-like locks and withdraws several brightly colored feathers with an iridescent sheen. ”These are magical tokens. Where you place them, a fully grown oak will spring into being. Take them to restore Melianse’s home, with my blessing.” She says, extending her hand to offer them.

Falchos steps to block her from giving them away, ”No Tiressia, they are too costly, too dear to simply give away.” He interrupts, his voice gruff and harsh. Her beautiful countenance hardens at his interference. ”And what value will they have when the wreckage of my stump is left to wither and rot and you have fled for your very life?” She counters, resolute but not angry.

He recoils, stung by her words. ”No, I will not flee. I will defend you to my last breath!” Falchos declares adamantly, but there is pain in his eyes. She lifts a hand to his face, ”And now who speaks of simply giving away that which is dear?” She asks him, her entreaty written clearly on her face. You get the impression that this is an old argument between them. He subsides, and Tiressia turns back to you.

”Good neighbors, do forgive us. It is impolite to quarrel before our guests. I regret that you find us thus, in fear of peril that stalks ever closer to our home. Please, take the tokens and be at your ease. I will endeavor to explain. We are still safe here, for the time being.” She gives the feathers to Andreas and motions for your party to make themselves comfortable. She offers refreshment in the form of cool water in wooden cups and ripe late summer fruits.

Finally, with some of the tension of the moment relieved, Tiressia explains the situation. ”It is not my wish to disparage your efforts. By all accounts you have done great things here and I have faith that you will do yet more. But the Blasphemer was not the source of all that ails these lands. Indeed, it is likely that he was merely another symptom of a greater malady. I have resided here for centuries and I have seen much in that time. There is an imbalance here... you understand my meaning, do you not, Brother?” She turns to Duzz at this and speaks a strange language to him that causes the tiefling to sit up straighter with wide eyes as he replies to her in kind. None of the rest of you understand the words, but it becomes clear that they share a kinship of some kind.

”Many words have been used to describe this phenomenon. Blight, corruption, curse… It all describes a wrongness so inherent that it seems all but impossible to identify its source. And worse, my observations lead me to conclude that it has grown substantially in strength and magnitude over the years. It seems to resonate with and call to the wilder and more wicked things of our world or even cause the susceptible to twist in on themselves. You must surely have noticed as it falls upon you to face so many of these threats.” She shakes her head sadly and takes a deep intake of breath before she continues.

”Even the plants and trees have been affected. Evil plants are quite rare, I can assure you. And yet we are seeing them more and more. It is one such that presses us so sorely now. We call it the Scythe Tree, though I have never seen its like before. It has great blade-like branches that it uses to cut down unsuspecting creatures. It is intelligent and capable of speech, though it only seems inclined to speak of threats and cruelty. It…” She begins, but cuts off in a sob. Falchos puts a steadying hand on her shoulder and finishes the tale on her behalf.

”It claims to have feasted on Dryad flesh before and that it failed to savor the delicacy. That it will stop at nothing to… consume her… slowly.” He swallows reflexively and raises his hand to point south, the direction he has been watching so carefully. ”It was only seven miles away when I last checked this morning. We have tried to fight it ourselves, or even to lure it away but all for naught. It is beyond our abilities.” His horned head droops, a note of shame in his voice.

Bit of a novella there, but that tends to happen with me. ^_~
TLDR; there is a Big Bad Evil Tree hunting the pretty dryad who actually has valuable information and reeeally wants to be your friend and ally.

Hey Tall Folk, Rillka calls to Andreas, looking down at her hands as if holding an invisible list Weeding out dryad eating plants is not on our list of things to fight, but as Council, I would like to propose it gets a priority spot at the top of the list. Seven miles is less than a day... sooo... we should probably get on that.
Rillka realizes Tiressia is unable to defend herself and willing to sacrifice herself; a nobility that Rillka experienced in Andreas, and why she was loyal to the Tall Folk. So while Rillka didn't like fey based on her previous encounters, there was something in this one worth exploring. And defeating a dryad eating demon tree seems super cool.

Enjoyed the novella. Keep 'em coming

Already predisposed to helping te dryad, especially in light of how forthright she is in providing them the magic to restore Melianse’s home, Saoirse listens intently to Tiressia's tale, noting the deep emotional connection between her and Falchos, as well as the fear of what was coming.

Unable to leave her tree, there would be no escape for her, and an agonizing choice of abandoning his love or facing a gruesome death for the satyr.

"I agree, putting down this Scythe Tree would go far to keep this region and those in it safe." the aasimar adds.

Looking to the others he understands their wishes, however charging into a fight blindly is not a good idea. He nods his head up and down a few times in agreement with them.

Andreas smiles at the offered gift.

I thank you for this. We will make sure these get to her as soon as possible. Perhaps our mages could replicate these in some fashion to create more to replace those that you have given us? There is a tree, an old sycamore, a particularly large specimen near us that we have been trying to heal. A group of mites had made a home underneath it. I would like to see its type growing in other parts of the region. Maybe we could create these tokens as the oak variant you have and maybe we can create a sycamore version as well. Time will tell. Our Magister Rhavi would know more about this.

Lady Tiressia, Lord Falchos. You have our swords to deal with this situation. We will do our best to remove this...blight. I personally do not know anything about this creature, so I will need all details if we are to succeed. Weaknesses, strengths, tactics and numbers are but a few of the details I desire. A location and description would be helpful as well, but...Lord Falchos I know that your heart is to defend your loved ones with your life and that is in of itself very honorable. I ask you to do something even harder. I want you to live for her. Help us remove this threat. Even just guiding us to the area would be helpful, even more so if you can point the damn thing out as I have not a clue what to look for. None of us do.

Andreas turns his body so that he is facing directly towards the satyr and the Dryad. He lets his hand rest on the hilt of his weapon. His words come out slow but with purpose.
She is with us.
He clenches his mailed hand around the hilt.
The words while still slow, hold the tremendous power of faith within them.
My faith will guide me onward even when my body screams no. Her light shines from within me. That light will never waver nor dim. We will succeed in this endeavor and bring about the healing the land desires and needs. This blight will be removed just assuredly as her light disrupts the darkness of all that is evil.

Tiressia is greatly soothed by your desire to ameliorate her desperate plight. Falchos' resolve is strengthened and they both wear the gleam of rekindled hope in their eyes. Falchos steps forward and extends his hand to Andreas in a warrior’s gesture of friendship, ”I can feel the conviction in your words. I would not have believed mortals would risk their own lives to aid us. I… am very happy to be wrong. We will tell you all that we can to arm you against the creature. And when you are ready, I will guide you.” He pledges and they settle down to the business of telling you of their prior encounters with the Scythe Tree.

They both report that the arrows from their bows were useless against it. The same for Falchos’ daggers. Tiressia’s sickle slash fared better, but moving in close enough to strike it directly was very dangerous as the Tree is Huge and strikes mercilessly at anything that closes on it. It must wrench its roots out of the ground to move and it is not particularly swift in its travel but its branches can strike very fast and do serious damage due to its strength and size. It did not respond to any of their fey enchantments, nor was its ability to attack targets reduced by Tiressia’s obscuring mist.

Saorise draws on the lore and mythos of the Scythe Tree. She recalls that there is a theme of unnatural death surrounding them. The trees themselves look dead and apparently draw no nourishment from the soil or sun as a tree should. Instead, they behave as ambush predators and lie in wait for unsuspecting creatures to wander close, but they do not kill quickly. They prefer their meal ‘well-seasoned’ by pain and fear and play with their prey for some time. She can confirm that Scythe Trees consider Dryad flesh an indulgent delicacy, though they also crave Elf, Gnome, and other sentient creatures strongly aligned with the natural world.

She also recalls that Scythewood, harvested from such trees, is sought after by Necromancers for its strong affinity with death magic. And that the first step taken to preserve such wood is to treat it with flame-retardant because it burns like fatwood.

Let me know if you want to seek out any other supplies besides what you currently carry or make any other sort of pre-conflict preparations. If not, my next post will begin the attack on the Scythe Tree.
