I'd rather not yet be working with the League and get the call to come help out, but either way works.

If the old guard is away somehow, there's more space to be the new top of the heap for protecting the Earth.

Dark Archive

These aren't really a secret, so go ahead and peek if like.

I imagine that Imagine (see what I did there?) has an "it's complicated" relationship with the JL. She -wants- to be helpful, but between daddy's ambivalent attitude of it (and some--or one, specifically--of its members) and her own non-nourishing upbringing, it prevents her from either being embraced by or embracing it fully. She'll come when called, by getting her there can be kind of...Green Arrow-ish.

Roleplay:Captain Robo:

*scene: A restaurant*

The complete absence of anyone sitting across from you is suddenly replaced by a young woman. She simply pops into existence and sits across from you, her dark, expensive business suit ruffling softly against the hand-crafted dining chair. You're not startled in the least.

"Thanks for meeting me for lunch. I feel so bad for you, working in that stuffy WayneCorp place. Doesn't the food get boring? Hmmmm," she says, picking up a menu. "I think I'll have the..."

A waiter comes by and places before her what appears to be a tiny log cabin built with exquisitely scented meat and a small helping of something green. The plate has a perimeter of a ruby-ish sauce. It's the kind of thing a person with too little appetite and too much money would order.

"...roast duck with mango salsa. And for you--"

The waiter reappears and places your favorite dish in front of you. "Compliments of the house, sir," the waiter says before becoming scarce.

"Oh, don't look at me like that. I wasn't digging around, in here," she says, tapping her head. "Daddy owns this place, and they keep a datafile of the regulars. You order this 78.4 percent of the time. Intuition my dear Watson."

She pauses to take a helping of the roast "duck" and dips it lightly in the besieging sauce. She takes a small bite.
"So. You wanna come work for us yet?"

She favors you with a brilliant white smile. She knows your answer, but wants to make the attempt anyway...for some reason.

Roleplay:Shudder:

*scene: Outside*

You're minding your own business, just being yourself. Your eye is caught by an attractive young woman, dressed in an immaculately talilored dark business suit that works just as well for business or pleasure. She's smiling. She's staring back at you with quite a bit of interest. She walks up to you. She leans close and whispers in your ear, "I know something scarier than you."

She flies up, not very fast, possibly wanting you to follow.

Getting recruited to action sounds like a decent way to start.

Imagine:

Neil reclines in his chair. He didnt much care for the bougie atmosphere. Everything about it felt fake, forced. Well, because he knew it was. Perceived Value. He looked over their bookkeeping, all digitized, and it wasn't as fancy and fresh as they wanted others to think.
They make a killing selling people food easily found at the local market. The rich know no better.

With Kara, everything was a power play. Her unnecessary entrance, her unnecessary location, her unnecessary proposal. They both know his answer.

"Wow, way to go Kara. Very intuitive of you! Another pat on the back for the Luthor wonder kin. You should probably check your data a bit better though. I've never stepped foot in this establishment until today, and I've been in the mood for a burger. Get your security checked. I had no problem planting data, I'm sure stealing data wouldn't be too hard."
The waiter sets down the burger, uncomfortably. Nowhere in the history of the restaurant had there been a hamburger, it didn't quite fit in with the menu. Seeing as Ms. Luthor was making an appearance, they made sure to go out of their way for her guest.
Neil sets down the fork and knife that came with his dish, and nonchalantly used his hands.

"Wayne takes care of me plenty. I have full control of my projects. I don't have to be concerned with my work being used to kill children in other countries."

He takes a large uncouth bite and responds with his mouth full.

"Not only no, but HELL no"

I opened up the Gameplay thread if you guys want to head over there.

I am working on a short description of the Status Quo and where some of the more important heroes are.

Should be ready to go soon.

I will assume we don't know either unless otherwise noted

Liberty's Edge

Have to admit this does appear quite interesting of a game so far. Is their room for additional players at the moment or has it become a closed game?

Hi everybody!

We're had a few losses as of late, so we're re-opening recruitment! =D

Let me tell you the GM SuperTumbler is an EXCELLENT GM! AND, because we've had so much trouble with losses, he's willing to take WHOLE bunch of new people! (What? He said he was up for anything. So, maybe, like, 3? 4? There abouts?)

Anyway, I know that Mutants and Masterminds 2nd edition isn't the _most_ loved system on these boards (That honor goes to CareBears: Friendship is Magic the RPG!) so Imma try to keep this thread alive until the loyal following the does do M&M2 eventually sees it and helps us out!

And by that I mean I'm going to tell jokes. But NOT the punchline. I'll only throw out a punchline if someone asks. And also applies with a character concept. ^_^

Joke the first!

A blonde notices that her coworker has a thermos, so she asks him what it's for. He responds, "It keeps hot things hot and cold things cold."

The blonde immediately buys one for herself. The next day, she goes to work and proudly displays it.

Her coworker asks, "What do you have in it?"

That's kind of mean. But google also kind ruins the whole "withhold the punchline" thing.

Spoiler:
"Soup and iced cream."

For those of us new to the idea of the campaign (don't know how I missed an M&M check before), could we maybe get a quick summary of the campaign and the current party roster? So we can see what gaps might need to be filled? I am of course scanning through the threads, but a summary would be very helpful.

Also, what is the PL and the PP available? I presume your extant PCs have gained experience so I don't know if you want a character created at their current level or at whatever your "starting" level was.

I love M&M2 and 3 and my HeroLab is configured for 2e (I'm too cheap to unlock other systems) so I can fairly quickly come up with something (should you want me) but an idea of what you're looking for would be helpful. Thanks.

Campaign: The Next Generation of the Justice League. Loosely based on the DC Animated Universe (Batman: The Animated Series, Superman, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Young Justice), it takes place about 20 years after the present day

Power Level: 12
Power Points: 182

Roster:

Imagine: Genetically engineered telepath and telekinetic, Kara Luthor, a former mental patient turned super hero. She's been experiencing a little tension between her loyalty to the Justice League, and loyalty to her father's interests.

Sinter: Everyman turned into an energy based plasma being. Has flight, blasting, and associated powers.

Shale: Extra-dimensional speedster/tank. Technically successor to the flash, natives of his dimension have much greater mass than those in ours, leading to an odd mix of traditional speed and tank type tropes.

2e is my favorite edition. I'm definitely interested.

My idea is going to the dark and mystic side. Corvus is the survivor of an alternate dimension war between two hell dimensions. Trigon and Azazel were fighting to assimilate each other's power. Their children, Raven and Nightcrawler were swept up in the battle and locked away in the combined dimension. They met, and raised a child.

The backlash of the battle eventually collapsed the dimension and hurled Kitty into this world. She doesn't think that it's the same universe her hell dimension connected to. but she was raised on stories of being a hero and she desperately wants to help people.

This idea was originally created for another game that died. I have that version Here (M&M3, PL13). I'll rebuild her for this game.

Mixing Marvel and DC? Blasphemy! Besides, we all know Raven ended up with Beast Boy.

I was in that game. It didn't really last very long, which was a shame since it seemed pretty promising (character was Quicky).

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

Thanks for the further details!

I was also in the game Kitty and Quicky was in as Fusion (very loosely, a sort of Carol Danvers-type with Firestorm-ish powers). (It was a game that takes place in the Amalgam universe, hence the Marvel/DC combination.)

I think I'll make something else for this, though. Thinking someone inspired by Oracle/Cyborg/Brainiac (tech, hacking, robotics), or maybe a stealth/skillmonkey. Or maybe something else entirely... I'm presuming you want original characters, not existing ones from DC in an older or rejuvenated form.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

You could play either original characters or DC characters who might still be around. With our canon based loosely on the animated shows, there is a lot of potential for DC characters who aren't big players in that universe. If someone wanted to play an all-grown-up star girl, or something like that, I wouldn't balk. Ties to DC characters and angles on the DC notion of legacy are certainly desirable.

I have an idea I would like to run by you. A clayface piece that has found a way to change his body so he can't be reabsorbed by Hagen.

Philo, that looks fun. We've had a bit of multiverse bending already, so that could tie into how she came to be on our Earth.

At the present, Cyborg is a sort of artificial intelligence living in the Justice League computers and calls himself VICTOR. Barbara Gordon is the police commissioner of Gotham, the Oracle moniker is open if that interests you. I don't think any Brainiacs have been seen since the Apokalips invasion featured in JLU, so fragments or "children" of Braniac are pretty open as well. The game had a tech hero, but he has vanished.

So you are like an ascended piece of protoplasm? How would that play out character wise? Is is kind of like an android finding its place in the world? Or something else?

More like Annie from the growing pains episode of the batman animated series. Would probably be similar to the way the martian manhunter works out in the original league except he is just trying to make a life for himself and sees the league as a way of expunging the sins of his father.

When you can be anyone, who you are is solely defined by you.

That sounds good. So how did this come about? Was he collected by some science lab and experimented on? Grown by a supervillain? Or did he just grow up in the Gotham sewers and gradually come out of hiding?

I like to drag in story connections to the setting that you set up.

Fair enough. I'm thinking he was a doppelganger taken from clay face and experimented on by powers technology in a bid to replicate the abilities of clay face. He was utterly changed by the experiments, losing some of clayfaces abilities but also gaining a few new ones. He escaped his confinement because of a scientist who had grown fond of him, and is now trying to do good in the world because of how that scientist taught him compassion.

Okay, I've upgraded Kitty from M&M3 to M&M2.

Raven still pined for BB, but when you are trapped in a Hell dimension for decades, you make do with what you have.

Understood. I'll try to get you something asap. Unfortunately it may not be until tomorrow, just 'cause it takes awhile to check/recheck build and I can only work on it at home since that's where I have Hero Lab. If you decide in the meantime to go with someone else, I understand.

Hi, DeathQuaker, Phylo, Imagine, Quicky! It's like the band wants to get back together!

I played Wingblade in that amalgam DC/Marvel universe.

I'd love to throw a concept in the ring as well. Of course, I could convert Wingblade to the MM 2nd ed rules and the right power level, but I have several other characters as well.

It looks like you've got flight, energy, strength and mental powers covered. Wingblade would be a brawler/fighter in the sense of Wolverine. I also have a Batman analogue in Whippoorwill, who is a world-class fighter with trick throwing weapons and gadgets.

Any thoughts on these characters before I set about converting them to MM 2nd ed rules?

Make what you like, though considering what we have left right now, we could probably use someone who can do the brainy guy stuff.

Hey Wingblade! *blows kiss*

Meh. I've done the thing where I -reallly- liked and wanted to play one character, and then did something else because I didn't wanna step on someone's toes. It didn't go well. If you've got a telepathic that you are in t0tes love with, then just run that, I won't mind. (much =)

But whateves. We don't have a cyber-guy, so he might've meant that, but M&M isn't D&D, so as long as you've got good saves and a decent Toughness, just go with how thy muse moves.

Heh. And, yes, playing "Imagine" with the "Luthor" part feels so much yummier. ;-)

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Hey back!

A telepath, you say?

Well, Gothic is a fav of mine. She's every bit the surly goth character -- through the roof telepathic abilities at the expense of zero telekinesis. She can't turn off her abilities and 'hears' the surface thoughts of everyone around her. She doesn't speak out loud, relying solely on her telepathy.

Dark Archive

Oooo! Me likey teh Gothic! (And I double like that she's a bit of a spitfire. We've already got too many boyscouts around here, knowhatImsayin'? =p)

No need for the boost, I got that covered, but make sure to top out your blast. At PL 12 we run into some pretty tough hombres. Try and have one damage and one other thing at max, either crowd control or debuff that you can fall back on if the enemy is immune. (Ya, I can't count the times that the enemy was simply immune to my double whammy. =p)

Always interested in some good super heroics. :)

H.A.D.E.S Background:

Milton Charles Garavon grew up with a life of pain and injury. His mother died giving birth to him and his father became an alcoholic to cope. His father was a functioning alcoholic though, so for years Milt suffered and wound up rebelling due to it. He wound up running with a crowd that gave him the power and respect he lacked at home. He ran with the wrong crowd for several years, doing whatever it took to survive on the streets and avoid going home for a beating. His life changed the day he turned seventeen and was part of a robbery gone bad.

Luckily for Milton, the judge took pity on the boy who had, according to all accounts of the witnesses just been an observer. As punishment, the boy was given a choice; the Military or Jail. Milt wisely chose joining the military and that put him on a fast track to success. After scoring in the top percentile of the military's aptitude tests during basic training, Milt was given an opportunity to work in the early stages of the DARPA exoskeleton research project, first as a test grunt, but then after pointing out a problem with the design and providing a solution, part of the design team. After four years in the military, Milt found himself on a fast-track to a degree in bio-mechanics and robotics. In college, Milt discovered that he had a unique (apparently) ability to visualize and see new uses for existing systems and even imagine adaptations and improvements at the same time.

After another four years, Milt had founded a new company (which he based in Green City for its advanced tech potential) specializing in bio-mechanical solutions for everything from disabilities to warehouse logistics. While working on the suit, Milt discovered, quite by accident, that he could shift items he was touching into an 'extra-dimensional closet' surrounding him. He discovered this when testing a new variation on an exoskeleton, one that Milton had in mind would assist deep sea salvage crews or rescuers in operations far beneath the waves. With a bit of refinement, Milton could see that the HADES suit (Human Augmentation Diving Enhanced System) had a lot of potential in several areas, the key was figuring out the right way to use it.

Would something like that fit?

This is so true. The game is actually a little more fun when you don't have the absolute perfect tool for every situation. So don't feel like you need to be an absolutely perfect tool.

I definitely want to get the band back together. and I definitely want to play Kitty. I missed out on a lot of the game because I was waiting to enter during a combat. :(

Sinter is a very much 'I have a hammer' kind of guy. He's also not the sharpest tool in the shed, so even his one other trick (blinding) isn't always that handy. He is close to indestructible, which is nice. He's been stymied a few times before.

Went light on the skills, figure he will be practing skills since he didn't have much time to learn anything during his captivity.

Edit: I'll post a backstory tomorrow.

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Wow, this is a hard choice! I read/skimmed your adventures so far, and let me say, the game really has a lot of great DC flavor in the characters and challenges.

So choosing which of my characters to offer as a submission is going to be really tough. Don't worry about me not finding fun in playing these characters -- I've played them all at one point or another, and they're all favorites of mine.

Breaking them down as how I see them fitting into this group:

Gothic: She could be hit or miss, in all honesty. The potential for juxtaposition of the glowering, silent, sullen teen against the mouthy Imagine is just too great. However, there's going to be a lot of toe-stepping, I'm afraid -- and since she is a pure telepath, she may be up against a lot of foes that she can't do anything against -- well, robots, mainly. The power level may be another issue -- Gothic's a mental powerhouse. But that comes at a cost of not having any real physical powers.

Wingblade: Probably the easiest to drop in, since she's already part DC -- being an amalgam of Hawkgirl and X-23/Wolverine. Major regenerative powers, swordlike wings, claws, and heightened senses. Main problem is that I'm currently playing her in DM Default's Masks game (though that game's sputtering right now -- I don't know how long that game's going to last). Bringing her in, she could be an experiment with ties to LexCorp, or she could be the result of a competitor -- Cadmus or the like.

Whippoorwill: If the group decides it needs a Batman type -- mostly human but with tons of skills and a variety of gadgets, Whippoorwill is your woman. Somewhere in the 20 years that have passed from present day, she would have rose to prominence as a highly skilled mercenary. She would undergo a process to give her large, feathered wings on her back, and as the cost of the procedure would go and do some bad things. However, she rebelled, and guilt and remorse has her trying to redeem herself by being a hero. She would've been an active hero in a place like Star City or Coast City in the absence of their usual heroes and an ideal candidate to be invited to join the Justice League.

Tenfold: Here's another option -- Tenfold is a duplicator. He can create nine additional super-strong duplicates. He's deaf, because his power is actually fueled by sonic energy, which his body is constantly absorbing so the sound waves never reach his ear drums. He's skilled at reading lips, however. But he's a potential powerhouse considering there's ten of him, and he can pull a lot of the Multiple Man tricks like doing ten things at once, then merging and retaining the knowledge learned by his duplicates.

Any preferences, or any absolute "no" characters in this batch?

Were I GM Tenfold would throw red flags. When I run M&M I tend to frown on things that give you a whole lot of attacks in a round. It really distorts the power curve. Personally I favor Whippoorwill since it fits a need. A JLA without a Batman just doesn't work so well (just look at what happened to JL Detroit- see no Batman).

I love the build here. As I was reading, I was thinking he needs vulnerability: cold, and dissolves in water... and it was all there. I don't remember him being vulnerable to fire, but I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Is there a reason you bought his Con so high instead of just giving him immunity to fort saves and a -- Con? I'm good either way, but it seems like based on the backstory he could be sort of a construct.

Stalwart, I'm not a big fan of duplicators for the same reason Sinter mentions. It is less of an issue of pulling focus in PbP, but still kind of hard to balance and deal with. It also tends to mean I have to throw a big pile of extras into encounters.

I'm ok with Gothic, but, like Imagine said, she has run into a lot of resistant enemies. Given her lack of alternatives, that could be a problem.

Wingblade and Whipporwill are both good. There is an existing character named Knightingale who is currently injured and is one of the Bat family. I can imagine a previous team up series with those two. Wingblade is fun, and could tie into some Thanagarian plots.

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

GM: Understood about Tenfold.

I'll do some reading up on MM 2nd edition and see which character pops. Whippoorwill and Gothic have never been built in M&M, and Wingblade was built at PL 14 in 3rd edition.

I'm probably thinking of the comics or something... but now that I look back I can't find where I came up with fire as a weakness, I may have been thinking of golem from ragman. Sonic attacks on the other hand seem to be a thing. I'll look at the con change issue, might be workable. But, how does that work with toughness saves?

Edit: Looked up constructs, I prefer the life support and a huge con method. Makes book keeping easier and also lets regen work properly.

Dotting for interest - hope I'm not to late to the party (waves at some familiar faces)

Mulling a submission - animalistic meta: Smilodon. Will try and get the guts of something up later today - both in terms of flavour and crunch.

Not as familiar with the DC Comicverse as I am with Marvel, but I'll do my research and see what pops.

RL is stymieing my efforts so I'll leave "Smiley" for another day and another game.

Very cool concepts, so bar has been set higher than I can reach this time round.

Cheers

OKAY! Here's my concept/build. She's basically an android hacker. She's got a tough body and some combat skills so she's not useless in a fight, but really the focus is on her intellect and tech skills. She is named for and very loosely inspired by the Calculator's daughter in the comics--but to my knowledge the Calculator--that is, Noah Kuttler--exists in the DCAU. (I know there IS a "Wendy Harris" in Young Justice, but I don't think, as far as I know, she's connected to Calculator, but I haven't actually seen Young Justice so I could be wrong). If I'm wrong about that--or otherwise anything else in her background doesn't suit the world (such as the connection I gave her to Barbara Gordon)--I can adjust as needed.

Build is ROUGH and probably needs some tweaks, but if you like the concept and want to bring her in, I will certainly clean her up a bit; suggestions are welcome. Hero Lab says validation rules are met.

Background
Noah “The Calculator” Kuttler was a very bad man, using his brilliant mind to steal tech and trade in information, but he did love his daughter Wendy. When she was horribly wounded and rendered comatose during this or that supervillain’s attack on their home city, he focused his life upon saving hers. While he always hoped to see her restored to life, as a programmer he made backup plans--in this case, literally. Step one was easy: steal a biodroid prototype from STAR Labs.

Step two was more complicated: using also-stolen state of the art mental scanning hardware (itself rumored to be built in part based on alien tech), he scanned her brain to map out impulses and activity, and fed this information into an artificial intelligence program he had long been working on, called Proxy. His original plan was to eventually create a fully formed digital “mind” for his daughter: if her old body and brain failed to support her, he would “rebuild” her in the form of “transplanting” her digitally copied brain into the biodroid’s body.

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out. Wendy’s body began to fail, her brain dying. He frantically tried to get all the information he could into the Proxy system before she died--and then transferred Proxy into the biodroid. The transfer was successful: but Proxy had no sense of identity, no memories of Wendy Kuttler. Quite possibly, her brain had been too damaged to even properly restore. Her artificial intelligence was… well, it was intelligent, but socially, it was as a child, learning and adapting. Wendy was dead, and Proxy, in Kuttler’s mind, was a failure.

Before figuring out what to do with Proxy, the police had at last tracked him down and raided his apartment. The police were at a loss for what to do with Proxy: while her body was STAR Lab’s property, she clearly exhibited signs of self-awareness and a desire to interact. Ultimately, she was taken in by Barbara Gordon, who found Proxy to be a remarkably fast learner and deeply curious mind. Maybe she did not have Wendy’s memories, but there was something in the biodroid that seemed more than human enough. Perhaps she had a soul.

Naturally, as her persona has developed, Proxy has found herself wishing to emulate the heroics of the police officers and vigilantes that encircle Barbara Gordon’s realm, not to mention her own caretaker’s compassionate and heroic nature. Based on her own experiences, Barbara knew that trying to shelter Proxy from the world would be a great mistake, so she has given Proxy her blessing--and through various connections, has recommended her for trial service to the Justice League.

Appearance: Proxy looks ALMOST human, as her biodroid nature mimics human form and movements very accurately, and her skin is warm to the touch. She is unusually pale, however, and her eyes have a faint glow to them (which she often conceals with a hood or goggles). She has black hair (which never grows) and usually wears practical street clothes. She has a bad habit of staring in a way that makes her rather uncanny-valley looking--and is usually a result of her deep curiosity.

Capabilities: Proxy’s biodroid body has some biological features as well as remarkably advanced cybernetics. She runs on a powersource that can draw small amounts of electricity around her to recharge--a constant pull, but on an infinetesimal level, so that her recharging process does not disrupt systems around her. Even the electromagnetic field emitted by living bodies can be enough, over time, to sustain her. She can also absorb electricity to “heal” her system. Her body, a prototype, is not remarkably strong or fast, but certainly resilient. She does not need to eat or really breathe as a normal person (the biological components of her body can sustain themselves on small stores of oxygen if she is deprived of it otherwise), but she does need to sleep, to allow her ever-developing digital mind to rest, process information, and develop. One of her hands detaches, which was a function of how she was assembled, but she has adapted this so that she can send her hand away from her to do two things at once (such as program two computers, or work on a machine from oddly different angles).

As an AI, she is remarkably intelligent and of course has stored in her internal database all languages, human and machine alike, allowing her to program other machines with great capability. She was programmed with a fair amount of technological and mechanical understanding to be able to understand her own systems. She can access a lot of information and learns quickly--but a lot of more “human” skills she is still developing as she learns to navigate the world she lives in. Being resilient and not actually alive, she doesn’t have instinctive survival instincts to fear death, per se--making her effectively fearless--though of course being an advanced intelligence, she would not be irrationally reckless. She is a closed system--she doesn’t directly interface with the Internet--to “hack” her, one would need to access her body directly. But with access to an outside machine, there is little she can’t do with a computer or mechanical device.

PS: Sorry, this took so long. Normally I respond faster but it's been weirdly busy for me lately. (Plus building in M&M always takes more time than I think it does.)

PPS: Sorry to see you're not submitting anything, Black Dow--IIRC in the last M&M game we were in you had a cool character.

Sounds good. This looks like a lot of fun.

DeathQuaker, I love the concept and the ties to the setting. A quick glance makes me think she is a little underpowered offensively, but I'll try to take a better look tomorrow. I'm sure the other players will give their feedback as well.

Actually while the blast is a bit weak, the penetration does help a bit. However I think it will be resisted most of the time (on the basis of rolls). The stun might work out, though I'm not sure which save it works against. Otherwise it is an amusing build.

Thanks! I see her more as combat support than primary (like taking out mooks while the others focus on the big bad), but if she can't really contribute at all that's an issue. What DC am I aiming for to be fairly effective? Are we mostly only fighting other supers and not mooks?

I think I need to decide whether more to focus on her android body and what powers it might have, versus focusing on her tech/gadgeteering (I have a bad habit of trying to spread characters too thin). I might go less innate powers (though keep the tough body/life support) and more devices and jury-rigging.

Should I make the android body stuff innate?
