Mom!:
Mom: Catherine Jane "Red" Grant is the long-time paramour of one Len Luthor. Exactly how she met Len Luthor has been lost to history: She won't tell and Len always gives a different story. Catherine Jane "Red" Grant, a normal old woman--if such a beasts exists--lives in the Tenements of Southpoint, but, unlike most of her neighbors, she does so by choice. Broken and shattered not only in the normal way that Luthor tends to do to people around him, but also from her own inability to protect her little girl from the industrial-scale genetic experimentation done to her. When it seemed that Red could find no solace amongst any kingdom of Man or alien, she found the detritus of Southpoint to be just the sort of balm she needed. At last, she found a populous more wretched than herself. The wastage around her brought up a new strength she did not know she had. She went about her hardships not unlike mythical Sisyphus, returning, but willingly, to the rock that will never know satisfaction. In time the gangland grist came to know the kind-but-unflappable old woman and left her alone. In return she was known to provide food or a bolt hole when one had no other options.

Eventually. [Racial] Secret. Secret:

The Healgun, NegaGUN and Kaputtgun are all small, grey, nondescript gun-looking things, no bigger than a derringer, and collectively they are referred to as The Three. They look so alike that none can tell them apart, even if Imagine is always amazed by this as for her they could not be more different, and she can know them by sight or by touch.

It also has holsters for the Healgun on one side and the NegaGUN! on the other. They are concealed by the holo-projector that fits around the wearer like a purse or satchel. Backstory: background questions:
A) Question the First! Mind Controller/Telekinetic. Based off the White Queen/Emma Frost. (She makes an excellent heroic villain because she has played both sides.) A controlling mastermind that doesn't mind getting her hands dirty. B) Physically smallish. Certainly not a physical threat. Blue skin and white hair for a distinctive appearance that drips allure and danger.
C) Mind Control and Telekinesis as main threats, but maybe some smaller utility powers like Mind Reading and Paralysis. Probably Persusion. D) For a typical crime she stalks target of some means and influence, then dominates them to just give her the resources she needs. This was always her lot in life because she's the daughter of a modestly known mastermind that, despite being a normal human, he was able to pose a threat to even some members of the Alpha Force (albeit the minor ones). She wasn't at the welcoming ceremony because she was convincing a man who had worked for all his life to give her his retirement account. Hey, a girl's gotta eat. E) Occupation under the V'Sori is only slightly different than beforehand. For the criminal the conditions stay the same, only the hand holding the whip changes. There will always be shadowy corners the powers-that-be don't go. Someone snitched. It had to be. It was supposed to be easy. Gather a few like-minded individuals who had a taste for money and a loose grasp of common morals. Go and find the target and tell him that, yes, he -is- going to accept the lucrative deal that he's been putting off for far too long. Slap him around a bit, done. Day at the office.
How will our intrepid protagonist get out of this one? F) Her dad's reputation seems to both precede and follow her. His great exploits, his genius ideas, his ability to have no powers but still lead some of Earth's greatest super-heroes on a merry dance. Him him him HIM! It's always him. But she's not him. And where is he now? She can't stand the side-ways glances, 'Oh, you're -her-. Do you know what -he- did?' And then there are only two ways that can go. it's either 'Aren't you ashamed at what he did?' or else, and worse, the, 'Well? Are you going to do better?' Nope. No she can't. It's a different world. He could make a nuclear bomb out of a paper clip, a can of hair spray, and some rather moldy milk, no doubt getting into some kind of cheese-based arms race. She can't do any of those things. And where is he now? He disappeared about the same time as Champion's death. Probably got broke and dead, both at the same time. Be just like him. Of course it might be easier if she didn't take his last name. The name of...Luthor.
Why Kara's Richness has an income.:
Dad wasn't around a lot. It's not like he was never around. When Kara was young he'd stop in about once a month and it would be fun! All of them, him, Kara, and mom, would all go out and do something exciting. Either this amazing jump park, or an amusement park, or a picnic with gourmet munchies. It's not like he and mom were married, but it's not like they were divorced either. She'd talk to other kids and get the stories about awkward hand-offs and weeks with one and weekends with another, the time scheduled down to the minute. This wasn't like that. After an active day she'd be sent to her room, full and still warm from the day's activities. Then he and mom would retire to their own room and, for some reason, all the walls of the apartment would shake. They must have been doing Science! Of course she did have days just with dad. On those days he would take her to a private retreat where he'd tie her down and inject all sorts of things and beat her with a pair of jumper cables. It turned her skin blue but it also awakened her psychic talents, so it was net gain. Right? Oh and the birthdays! He was there for -every- birthday, and he always brought the party. Clowns, balloons, a pony ride, and always an epic, city-spanning treasure hunt that would culminate in some amazing prize...that she was sure dad didn't know about. It was her sixteenth birthday when she knew it was done. He just, didn't show. No call, no notice, not even a card. She hasn't seen him since, and she wishes she could remember the last time she saw him so she could stamp that as The Last Time. But she can't. It got weird when she was 18 and moved out. These...THINGS.. just started showing up! Every now and again some odd bit of tech would appear at her doorstep. All of them came with detailed, stoically-written instructions. But nothing personal. No note, not so much as a word to say they came from dad. The greatest of these was of course the L-belt, an apparent modification of the well-known Z-belt, but this made that look like a lucky charm at the bottom of a case of Chernobyl Cherries. And money suddenly appeared in her bank account. Once a month, without fail, a number would get bigger. And it didn't matter if she moved banks, the strange deposits followed he like a stalking butler, without a word to say. One time she stalked the head IT guy at her bank, and through a series of sexual favors and gentle mental prodding she got him to trace the deposits. He found out they were automated deposits from some off-shore account. More prodding found that those off-shore accounts were, themselves, funded by other off-shore accounts.
Once she stopped using banks, just to see what would happen. She had this weird dream where she thought she saw a guy in her bedroom. She swears he winked and walked through the wall. At least it seemed like a dream, but the next morning there was an envelope of cash on her bedside table. None of this means he's alive. This could all be some kind of dead-man switch that activated once she turned 18. Trust funds feeding other funds, that pay people to keep the works going. Be just like him, to not get his hands dirty. Still, it'd've been nice to see him one last time. Question G:
G) To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, blah blah blah. But that goes without saying, doesn't it? IF such a thing could be had, she'd like to see her dad one last time. He wasn't "exactly" an absentee father, but he certainly wasn't around as much as she'd like. And if he did show up, if she were being honest (which is always a dicey thing) she'd like his approval. Some moment when he addressed her as "my child, with whom I am well pleased." That aside, she wants to be in control. Have some little corner of this world where her word counts more than any other. With the V'Sori in charge that sort of by default makes them enemy #1. So they need to learn their place. By any means necessary. |
