The funniest thing I found from the books is that he has to have a cold shower, but he has an open fire. It's like he never bothered to consult a plumber and install a heater using the fire, it wouldn't cost too much.
I'm rereading all the books now and was thinking that very thing!
X-Rays should also work with an early machine, since the old OLD machines are completely passive: radiation source, body, exposure plate.

Treppa |

OK, so in Ghost Story, Harry's bounced around the foster system until 2 weeks after his power shows up in early HS (frosh I believe). Justin takes him then but does not have a TV. Harry slips out to the local mall with a store that sells TVs to watch Knight Rider.
Not that it matters. I'm finding it amusing sweeping up all the little bread crumbs from across the novels.

Treppa |

There are so many little things thrown in across the books that all link together that they have to have been planned from the start.
I cannot fathom planning one book much less the 20 or 30 that some authors create.
Re. Spect.
I'm just re-reading everything before the big battle to get refreshed on all the factions and enmities and alliances and debts and promises. There's a crazy amount going on through the various books.

Ragadolf |

There is a LOT of stuff going on in the background.
I can barely keep track of it when I'm reading the book, much less when i'm in the next one.
I used to be seriously impressed with the author of 'The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant', Stephen R Donaldson.
I have it on good authority, (One of my best friends got to meet and speak with him for a while, and told him this, as well as mentioning it in interviews) that he wrote the first trilogy backwards. Because he wanted each of the characters to have a specific journey, and knew where he wanted them to end up. So he started at the end and then worked his way backwards to the beginning.
But now? Sheesh, like you said, I can't plan out a short story, how some of these folks plot 12-24 books out is beyond me!
(I'm looking at YOU Jim Butcher and Robert Jordan! And others,...)
;P
Still, good for us! More to read! :D
Speaking of, I dont have TIME to re-read the entire series. Again.
(Yes, I've done that a couple of times, but its getting a bit much to do for every book now.) ;P
But I am going to TRY to re-read everything after Changes. And maybe Changes. And yes I'm including the collections that came during that time. Because like you said, I would like a refresher on who, what, and whatever.
(I got SERIOUSLY confused at one point. Remember when Thomas Wraith went all dark-side? Like, afterwards he held a civil conversation with Harry, but it was seriously creepy-spooky. Then, next time you see him, it's like, 'Oh I'm all better now' and was back to 'old' Thomas. So I guess I really missed something. Somewhere.)
:(

Unfortunately, I cannot think of anyone I'd wanted to be.
I also wondered about this. Boilers and water heating are ancient tech -- but then I figured it was because he was a renter and couldn't start making that kind of change to his apartment (but then, the whole of his lab doesn't really align with that).
And I can relate to the Bugs. And the Spock. And probably a half-dozen superheroes. And...and...
...but then again, that's the sort of imagination that got me gaming. ;)

The threesomes/orgies/etc. set him straight, but I think it was the general guilt trip that broke him out of his edgelord phase. Pretending that you don't care to protect the people you care about doesn't work so hot when the people you care about bite the dust. (It really doesn't help that characters are absent for entire books, though.)

Hey, welcome back, Tilnar! How was camping?
I think Danny has scared us all into leaving the Wax Seal of Doom up to Kenneth to handle.
And Mahorf, I think you're right on the nose with that one. Butcher generally beats us over the head with the point quite thoroughly, so when he skips lightly over a character development, we miss our accustomed beating.
We should make a pool on upcoming developments.
I think Murph transforms into a Valkyrie or Einherjar after being killed in battle.

Yep. Thats part of it. When I read his Codex Alera Series, since I went into it with my 'dresden' mindset, the first couple of books just didnt feel right. Then he found his balance between 'writing something different' and what makes dresden so much fun, and they got MUCH better! :)
Hm,,, I'd take that bet. Murph DOES like a good fight.
possibly combine 'turning into a valkerie' with 'becoming the next Knight of the sword?' for the still-unclaimed blade?
Ooo, maybe not, talk about conflict of working for two bosses at once! O_o
I read something online that brought together a lot of various scraps of info about 'Masks & Mantles' in Dresden. (Comments made by various characters in different books) Right now I'm running on the (seemingly correct?) theory that the Mantle of Winter Knight doesn't make you (much) stronger, just allows you to push your limits? But what if thats (another) lie Mab uses to CONTROL her knights?!? I think Dresden has more power than he realizes. And when he does, the kids gloves are off!

Tilnar |

Camping was.... well, there were good moments. And then there was the tropical storm coming up the eastern seabord - enough that we had to flee and return the next day. (On the plus side, our new gear stood up to the rain and our spot was elevated, so it all dried the next day without any issue).
I don't think I realized how much more work goes into planning these things when there's more than just yourself involved. ;) Let alone the packing/setup/teardown/etc.
Still - she loved it (though that might have been because of her cousin being there) - so we'll be doing it again (we have to, we bought all that gear...) ;)

Treppa |

...possibly combine 'turning into a valkerie' with 'becoming the next Knight of the sword?' for the still-unclaimed blade?
I think the idea of Murphy being a Knight of the Sword was quashed all the way through. When Dresden first sees her with his Sight, she's a pure angel. Later, she's bruised and her garments are stained. She's not fallen, but her faith is strained. She's given Fidelacchius for the Chichen Itza fight, but retains the swords when that's not her mission and ends up misusing one and breaking it. It's remade through Butters' and Harry's faith. It seems pretty clear a Sword is not in her future.
I see Mab as putting together an A-Team against the Outsiders. She is, by Titania's word, a being of logic and rationality. That doesn't jibe with the Winter theme of pure appetite. Maeve and Slate were completely into the Winter appetite thing and were useless to Mab. She now has a Knight with the discipline required for wizardry and a Lady who grew up in the household of a Knight of the Sword, with its focus on faith and duty. She worked with Marcone to get the Weapons of Faith loosed into the world from Hades vault. She's gearing up for this. She may have withheld part of the Winter Knight's Mantle because Slate was unworthy. She doesn't show her hand. Harry has to be on his toes and ready for anything. There may be much more to the Mantle than he knows.
There are also the 5 items of faith. Nicodemus holds one, Harry has 4. Who will use the 4, I wonder. Amoracchius is still on hold as well. Butters getting his light saber was foreshadowed. I can't think of anyone who has had forshadowing for... wait... no way. Amoracchius is the blade of love. Who do we know who has been redeemed by love, hmm? A vampire Knight?
I thought Battle Ground would be the big end fight of the series, but it may not be. Not if it's just the Fomor. It might be where the Outsiders' infiltrator is revealed, though. Can't wait! eeeeeeeeeeeeeee

We went camping when I was a kid because we couldn't afford anything else, and it was wonderful to me -- some of the best memories of my childhood.
Not so much of adulthood. The last time I went, there was a huge storm, a tornado hit nearby, the creek we were near rose up into the tent. It wasn't good. We all agreed to pack it in and cut a week off our trip.

Tilnar |

I thought they were leading up to Murphy for the blade, but I think that ship has clearly sailed now. That said, I was rather thinking that it might go to Justine (for the same reasons that people were thinking about Thomas - if only because I thought the blades needed to stay with humans), but the pregnancy has me thinking otherwise.
Murphy getting Valkyrie-d would work, though -- I do think there's a plan there where she gets to kick supernatural tail, rather than end up as one more crisis of guilt for Harry. (That said, if that does come to pass, I'm betting Harry will get the opportunity to feel dumb and guilty for at least a few chapters before finding out what happened to Murphy -- then again, I suppose she could also end up with the Summer Knight mantle - it's almost twisted enough to be the sort of thing Butcher likes to do).
That said, I believe we were told there'd be another few books building up the Black Council before the big end of game fight - so I do think this is just about putting the Formor down (though, really, the redacted for spoilers??! That's not an easy thing to overcome...)
I do wonder what's happening in Chicago will bring the Tuatha out of wherever they might be in Butcher's world. I almost half expected to see Kenneth showing up to the Peace Summit. ;)

I remember loving it as a kid - and then doing it as a teenager to party. As a kid, all the work is done for you, as a teenager, as long as there's a sleeping bag and the beer (or the girl - or better, both) - you didn't really worry about much else. Now, I've got a car jammed to the gills with air mattresses and cookware and a dining tent and..... ;)
Still, as I said, the storm sucked, coming home sucked, it was a lot of set-up for really, one overnight and 2 days -- but the good parts were good, and I'm that kind of idiot who'll do what he needs to so the little girl gets the experience.. and, really, I'll sand down the rough edges in the memory of the weekend over time, too. [I mean, hell, it was better than the early days of quarantine..]

Treppa |

I thought about Summer Knight for Murphy but couldn't recall if there were magical or supernatural conditions for the job. Fix is a changeling and Harry a wizard, but I don't remember about their predecessors.
Re: Thomas, I remember reading something that made me think his demon/Hunger could be defeated without killing him, which might be necessary before he could become a Knight. I don't remember where or what it was. [I was probably falling asleep at the time and thought "Aha! That means thaz zzzzzzzz...."]

Edwyn Mulder |

I think the Summer/Winter Knight has to be a man; at least, both the current and preceding ones that we know of all have been men. Given how archaic the rules of the Mantle (and the Fae in general) are, I can only assume that it is sexist on top of everything else. :P
I don't see an easy way out for Murph, unfortunately. She's never gonna be as strong as she was before without supernatural assistance.
Thomas is a good candidate for Amoracchius, but that might be a bit hard for him to pull off given his current predicament.
But the meanest thing Butcher has done is release "Christmas Eve" two years ago because it takes place after Battle Ground. >:|

Ragadolf |

Wait,... WHAT?!?!
'Christmas Eve' Is AFTER BAttle Ground?!?!?
(Yeah, I missed that lil bit.) O_o
Ohh,.... SO much to think about, so lil patience for typing tonight. :P
- I think Murph could still wield the sword, When Harry looked at her the second time she looked 'injured' true. But remember that her experiences were described as 'abuse', and that damaged her, (faith shaken, self confidence shaken, etc) but she still looked like an angel.
-Thomas could also be a good candidate. With his Hunger demon, he is far too easily tempted ALL the time, but all the books agree that he has always known what true love is, ever since he met Justine. And he keeps fighting. An important qualification for a Sword wielder.
-In hindsight, MAYBE Butters getting the sword was foreshadowed? (Far too much to read through to see if I could spot that tidbit) but now that he has it? All I can think about is the first line of HIS short story in the collection, "I am a jedi. Like my father before me." :)
-OK, I can totally see Kenneth (and Danny?) being in the background at the Peace Talks party! When I re- read that chapter I'm gonna have a hard time NOT seeing that now! ;P
- Murph getting Valkerie'd would be cool, (Her getting Summer Knighted would just SUCK for their budding relationship!) But I think part of her strength and what makes her such a great character is she ISN'T supernatural, and still keeps jumping headfirst into situations with Harry. (Her getting powers would be cool too though, I mean, it worked for Butters?)
-Glad you had 'Fun' Tilnar! :)
I used to enjoy camping when I was LITTLE, I didn't have to do any of the work! The older I got, the less fun it became. Even when we had a camper and 'camping' meant parking it at the trailer park in the park.
(Say THAT five times fast!) ;P
Still, your right, some good memories though.
-'Frozen' and 'Frozen 2' are both worth a watch. If you like that kind of thing, (My wife and daughter LOVE Disney, and musicals, not always in that order) then it's great! If you do not (My son could care less) then its still a good cartoon.
(Hey, I long ago learned that I dont have to like it for it to be 'good' or well made.)
Annnndn thats all for tonight. ;P
PS- (I lied!) I luv how we make one comment in game, and 20 relating to it in the discussion thread. Thanks all! :)

Treppa |

In hindsight, MAYBE Butters getting the sword was foreshadowed? (Far too much to read through to see if I could spot that tidbit)
Yeah, in Ghost Story, Skaldi asks Butters when he's going to get in the ring and train, and Butters says "About five minutes after I get a functional lightsaber." At the time, I thought it was a throwaway nerd culture line, but it jumps out on the reread.

True that! I had forgotten about that line! ;P

And I found Dresden has 2 of the holy artifacts going back to Chicago with him from the island: the athame (which I assume is made from the head of the spear of Longinus?) and the placard.
From Christmas Eve, looks like a lot of people are lost in this next book. River Shoulders says a lot of old wizards are just hanging on, so maybe Ancient Mai, Listens-to-Wind, and Martha Liberty?
I'm finished rereading all the books - on to Battle Ground! Any... minute... now.

A small thing, unrelated to this game...
As you all know, my ability to play or run games in real life stopped just over three years ago when my daughter was born. So, since then, my only outlet has been PbP on these boards -- this game and a few others. Sadly, all of the long-term games I was in (other than this one) have since folded -- and while I've snuck into a few newer games, I find myself less enthused about some (many) of them - possibly because I'm just waiting for them to collapse too. [And yet, despite this, I spent far too much time creating new characters for other recruitment threads].
Anyhow, with all of that mulling in my head, I was thinking that we've been playing together online for years (I won't say how many, it's not polite) -- but in that time, I've seen that we all get along pretty well, enjoy each other and gaming, and generally are pretty good at coming up with solutions to problems and what not.
So... I've been thinking about starting a PbP PF (1ed) campaign -- or, more accurately, running a PbP version of the last campaign that I ran for players IRL (like 5 or 6 years ago). When I ran it for the group, there were a few times it went right sideways, including a TPK that required a 'reboot' -- and so I've always been curious to see how well experienced players would handle it (or, more accurately, a group made up of experienced players, so that we don't have one player doing most of the heavy lifting and getting frustrated by the 'interesting' choices of some of his colleagues..) Plus, I still have most of my notes, so I don't to spend too much time doing prep work (and, thus, greatly reducing the probability of being strangled by my wife).
Also, since I've never run a game by PbP, I figure starting with a most forgiving lot (i.e. - you guys who are generally used to putting up with me) would be the best way to ease my way in.
All that to say, I'm basically seeing if you (or, at least most of you) might be interested in giving it a shot. If you are interested, then I'd build a closed recruitment thread where we can talk logistics, and I can put in character guidelines, the starting scenario, the campaign traits, etc. I'm basically asking here first because I think I'll need a critical mass of dedicated and skilled players who'll stick with it. [I was thinking we could then fill out the party, aiming for 5-6 -- I've got a few players I was thinking of inviting over DM that I've played with before -- but I'm also more than open to recommendations if you've got any.] I was kind of thinking we'd shoot for a 4-5x/week sort of posting rate -- a little less than once a day -- trying to find a balance between over-committing and never building (or losing) momentum.
I will add in one last thing -- a large challenge here will be mapping -- because of the time limitations, I suspect many of my updates will have to be done on my phone, and moving tokens on a map (let alone generating a map) is quite painful with that limitation. While I'm not against running combats in a theatre of the mind sort of way, Pathfinder is very tactical (especially with spell AoEs, flanking and AoOs) and so I'd not want to lose that aspect of things. I guess, basically, I'm saying that I'm very open to (potentially) clever suggestions, while keeping theatre of the mind as a fallback. [There should be a group of "Deputy Map" folk in the PbP forums. They'd get into every campaign!]
For those who might be interested: the campaign is set in Lastwall, near the Belkzen border (players start at Castle Firrine) -- and I wrote the whole thing before the official Giantslayer and Ironfang APs, so it goes in its own direction. It was built as a full campaign, which is to say, if you follow all the sidequests (including the ones that arise from campaign traits), it'd take you from the starting level (3) all the way to 20.

Ragadolf |

Wow. That's cool.
Scary, but cool. :)
(I've been toying with the idea of trying to run my own PbP campaign, But fortunately I have always passed my Will (vs Reality) checks. At least so far,...) ;P
That sounds like a great idea. I'll be happy to join you on your quest.
I'll just ask for forgiveness in advance for any long or obnoxious absences. I find that MY time on these threads has as much to do with how I feel that day, as much as it does work or family or anything else. ;)
Some days I can write a book. (And I have!) And others I dont even feel like typing "OK". ;P
Re: the theatre of the mind mapping, it works VERY well for a system like this, but you are correct in that PF(1) is very tactical, with full force of a fireball HERE< but cross this line and you dont even get singed. :P
But with a cooperative group like this, and not a bunch of rules lawyers, (no offense, I like the rules as much as anyone, but if it gets in the way of my fun I'm not gonna argue with you about it for 3 hours!) -_-
I dont think it would be a major problem.
Maps would help to start battles with for sure. But Ive done as many PbPs with maps as without, and they both work.
I luv a great map, but I'd rather have a thread full of fun In Character commentary "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." than worry about counting hexes. (If you tell me I can reach it, great, if you tell me I have to spend a round getting closer, also good.) :)

Treppa |

Woo, that sounds awesome! All my pbps are positively glacial. I have plenty of room to start a new one. And yeah, this is a good group. :) Count me in, Til!
In other news, I wanted to watch the old Dresden Files shows, which I can see for free on imdb.com. I went to watch them yesterday and the search result for Dresden Files had at the top "The Dresden Files (in development)" and "The Dresden Files: Peace Talks (2020) (TV Series)" which I hadn't noticed before. !! ?? Is this news to anyonme else?

Ragadolf |

Great! We'll keep the gang together! :)
What?!?!?!?!
(First off, I wasnt aware that imdb had anything other than poorly filled out information on shows. They also have some to watch?)
O_o
I AM aware of the (Well-intentioned, but poorly executed) TV series,...
(I still watched all of the episodes online) ;P
I was NOT aware of the other items! 8O
I want to be excited about the possibilities. VERY. Excited.
But, knowing IMDB's website, it is incorrect information, filled out by some 'helpful' but clueless person.
(Like everything on Wikipedia)
>_<
I will be leery about getting my hopes up on new TV shows, until I see it mentioned on Butcher's official website.
THEN I'll do my best imitation of a fangirl squeal!
(I'm a bass, so, I don't 'squeal' normally. But for THAT, I'd do my best!)
:)

Tilnar |

I bought the original tv show on DVD. I admit it.
But the thought of new stuff is pretty snazzy - but I imagine some of that might be the entry for the video of the book trailer we all watched

re: mapping
Can we use Roll20? It works well on the desktop and it looks like you can use it straight from browser on a phone.
It has a ton of freebie tokens available.
I have a ridiculous collection of maps and custom tokens from games I've run, so would be happy to provide generic map images and possibly some specifics. This goes for DSX, too, if you want to use my stuff.
I used to use ttop to generate maps, take screen shots, then post the new screen shot for each round. Talk about labor intensive! Yeesh.
I was playing with GM stuff on ROLL@) and I think you can easily turn on and off player movement for tokens. You could concievably limit movement to the person whose turn it is, so nobody else gets moved out of place between turns.
I dunno, just throwing things against the wall to see what sticks.

Tilnar |

I know I've had issues trying to use Roll20 over a mobile browser - but they may have improved things. And, that said, if it's a decent solution for people, we can certainly explore making it work. (Treppa volunteering to do the hard work does make it more appealing. ;) )
I've never looked at the GM side of things over there, so I've really 0 idea - but I do like the idea of a solution to mapping (and, really, having some generic base maps would be very helpful).
That all being said, we can probably have this conversation in the new campaign's discussion thread instead of this one. ;)

Sorry, yes I'm interested. I was having some monitor issues, but will get some posts up.
Thanks for the map offer Treppa, my current GM is having issues with Roll20 after the updates. But we've been enjoying it.

Storms are nasty enough without a one-two punch. At least, per CNN, they've both lost a bit of their earlier oomph.
I'm quite pleased to be up here, where we just see the tail end of them after they've skittered up the coastline... even if they ruin my camping weekends from time to time. (That said, there were two (small) tornadoes last time we had the storm remnants crashing into the local fronts, so I probably shouldn't be so glib)

Ragadolf |

heh, its all a matter of experience and opinion.
I was raised in Tulsa (IE= Tornado Alley) so Tornadoes dont bother me nearly as much as they should. ;P But the thought of havingto swim to safety in a hurricane frightens me. A lot.
Peeps from New Orleans on the other hand, be TERRIFIED of the thought of a tornado, but are currently throwing 'Double-Hurricane' parties.
O_o
I,... do not understand some people,...

Ragadolf |

Oh you jinxed it sister.
Hey all,
So sorry, will be delayed.
I did decide to join my wife in 'panic mode' and skip town ahead of the hurricane, racing it all the way up the center of the country.
Which was fine, as as far as I know, while there was some flooding and damage in my town, i think my house is fine. (Wont know until I get back and check myself)
Unfortunately, while in Oklahoma, my son ended himself up in the hospital.
(Turns out doing 100 squats after no exercise for a prolonged period can be really bad. REALLY. BAD. Who knew?)
So, I'll be camping with him here in hospital-land (NOT in my current state of residence) for at least a night or two.
I'll re-join when time and sanity permit.
Sorry :(

Ragadolf |

FYI- He did the squats because he was hanging out with his friends in an virtual online game room (VR Chat) with his new VR headset, and ended up challenging himself to do 100 squats.
Which he did, which hurt him so much that he now has WAY too much damaged-muscle-proteins in his blood, which is bad.

Ragadolf |

FYI- Update (I keep forgetting which threads I have posted this in, so I'm informing all my peeps)
Son is out of hospital, (Still has some protein-enzymes or something that he needs to get rid of, but the dr said he can do that at home.)
AND we are back home! :)
My messy, long-neglected home,... >_<
With the piles of unanswered emails from work,... :(
<Sigh> yeah, I'm back, but only physically.
MENTALLY is another story, between the stress of dodging the hurricane, the son having to go in the hospital, and (edit for cursing) everything else, I'm gonna be a couple of days getting the home cleaned up and caught back up on both work and play.
But I will! :)
